Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last Saturday a great group of volunteers labored all morning to spruce up our two campuses. They, along with all the volunteers who keep constant watch over our grounds, deserve a big thank you! We are grateful to them and to everyone who gives of themselves to keep the parish looking its best. I personally thank you for your generosity! Speaking of thanks, we owe Father Peter a debt of gratitude for his work overseeing our youth and young adult ministries this past year. He and his helpers worked hard during the past 10 months keeping our apostolates to young people going. Today we are pleased to announce that we have hired a fulltime youth and young adult minister, Ms. Rachael Henley. She is no stranger to St. Michael Parish, since she has been serving as a volunteer in our youth program for several years. Rachael has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology and Psychology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville. She currently works in corporate management but will begin leading our programs in June. Welcome Rachael! Next Saturday and Sunday I will be away from the parish due to the annual Knights of Columbus state convention. Prior to being assigned to St. Michael as pastor, I accepted the position of State Chaplain for the Knights, which comes with occasional weekend obligations. This year’s convention is virtual, but oCcers must be present in person, so I will be away. I’m grateful to Fr. Peter, Monsignor, and Fr. Marty Nassr for helping cover the gap. Now from the list of questions posed to me by our eighth graders: “Why do we go to confession instead of being forgiven through prayer?” The starting point for answering this question is found in both sin and the damage done by sin. Every sin causes a spiritual wound in the person who has sinned and a rupture in the relationship with God and neighbor. Having been given the authority to forgive sins (see John 20:22-23), the Church also has the authority to determine the best way to accomplish not only forgiveness but also healing. Guided by the Holy Spirit and having the experience of centuries of working with sinful humanity, the Church has determined that the best practice for exercising her authority to forgive sins is to do so in a one-on-one encounter, confidentially, and in a way that both prompts the sinner to admit to the sin and allows the Church to speak aloud the healing words of absolution. “I absolve you from your sins”—these are powerful, healing words! “Go in peace”. In the very same passage where Jesus gives the Church the authority to forgive sins our Lord also gives the gift of peace. An abiding peace flows from the certain knowledge that our sins are forgiven. The encounter we have in confession gives us the assurance we need for healing. In the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Hertzfeld

Greetings From Fr. Shaji!
Hope everything is going well at your side. These days I got several messages and E-mails from Findlay to ask about me and the present situation of our Country. That's why I am sending this note to you to tell our people that By the Grace of God here I am doing fine. I got the first dose of vaccination and on coming Saturday will get the second one. Thank you so much for your love, care, support and prayers. But the situation in our country is really bad, especially the northern part of India such as Delhi, Maharashrta and some other states. Maybe you heard everything through the media in these days. Hundreds of people are dying with Covid virus. Here in Kerala (my home state) we also have lots of Covid 19 positive cases. Some of my distant family members are also struggling with Covid virus. Fortunately they are not in a dangerous situation but two of our bishops (Bishop John, my Cousin and Bishop Barnabas) are in the hospital with Covid 19. Bishop John is doing fine and getting better but Bishop Barnabas is in a serious condition on a ventilator in ICU. Both of his lungs are a>ected with pneumonia and we are requesting your prayers for his speedy recovery. So I humbly request your valuable prayers to our people those who are struggling with this Covid virus.

MAY 16, 2021
God remains where love remains. When a believer realizes, without doubt, that God is love, it is a powerful moment. Being able to place our resurrection trust in this fundamental truth allows us to experience God’s presence in all of our experiences: the good and the bad, positive and negative, life enriching and destructive events we encounter. It is no wonder that St. Paul so accurately tells us that it is love that endures all things and lasts. How can God not endure or ever fade away? Because He is God. Jesus also guarded and protected His disciples as the endearing shepherd who always had their best interest at heart.
If we become too immersed in the world, we lose touch with these deeper realities. We can become so preoccupied with preserving what we have created or think that we need, forgetting that it is not building our city that really matters, but God’s. Jesus clearly did not belong to the world and, by virtue of His resurrection, He tries to get us to understand that we do not either.
The truth brings us to other worldly, more divine places and takes our eyes o> of the concerns that often captivate our fears and storm our senses.
Life can easily erode our faith. Think of your life over the last couple of weeks. What challenged your faith and distracted your divine glance? Even being overly stimulated with technology and social media can erode our sense of confidence and cause us to forget who we really are. We need to distance ourselves from the world in order to experience the joy that Christ o>ers. The world will never like the word of God. It is too challenging and too perplexing. The world mistakenly believes that it can survive on its own. It is a mistaken judgment that may cost people a lot in the end. It is all so very simple: God remains when we love one another. If in all the business of our lives and all that each day brings, the good and the bad, we follow the call and path of love, we will walk with God. There is nothing to fear and anxiety finds no home.

What Do The Sisters Do In Summer? What Do The Sisters Do In Summer? What Do The Sisters Do In Summer? What Do The Sisters Do In Summer? Sr. Mary Bethany, O.P.Sr. Mary Bethany, O.P.Sr. Mary Bethany, O.P.Sr. Mary Bethany, O.P.
“But, Sister, what do the teachers do when the kids go home?” ...I watched a look of amazement cross my young student’s face as I tried to explain that the teachers did not live at school 24 hours a day and actually had homes and lives of their own outside the classroom! As summer approaches, perhaps a similar question might be crossing the minds of parishioners: What do the Sisters do when the school year ends? The short answer to that question is: lots of things! Here is a brief look at some of the pursuits that occupy the summer months for the Dominican Sisters of Mary.
Study:Study:Study:Study: As Dominicans, we know that - whether teaching math, science, English, or theology - all truth reveals and leads ultimately to Christ, who is Truth Himself. In the summers, many of our Sisters are assigned to pursue higher education programs in theology studies and a variety of secular subjects. We relish these opportunities to be enriched intellectually and spiritually, while enjoying the change of pace from the mental work of teaching to the joy of being students again! Summer Missions:Summer Missions:Summer Missions:Summer Missions: Each summer, many of the Sisters travel in pairs to parishes around the country to assist with various catechetical programs and “VBS” camps. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the witness of religious life with youth who might not have interacted with Sisters before. Family Time: Family Time: Family Time: Family Time: When Christ promised His followers the “hundredfold” here below with “brothers, sisters, and children”, He was not exaggerating! In addition to our earthly families, we gain a second family of the 150+ Sisters and their respective families. Every summer, we take a home visit to spend time with our own families. We also cherish the time spent together within our community family as Sisters return from the mission convents and we reunite.
““““The Week of GloryThe Week of GloryThe Week of GloryThe Week of Glory”””” We end our summers with the celebration of three joyous events: Final Profession (July 21 this year), Reception to the Habit (the ceremony in which our postulants receive their habits and religious names, thus becoming novices; July 22), and First Profession of Vows (July 23). In typical years, we are blessed to open our Profession Masses to the public and to host a reception at the motherhouse; this year, we invite you to see our website for information about possible live-streaming of these beautiful liturgies.
Know of our prayers that this summer may be a time of leisure, rest, and a deepening in the Know of our prayers that this summer may be a time of leisure, rest, and a deepening in the Know of our prayers that this summer may be a time of leisure, rest, and a deepening in the Know of our prayers that this summer may be a time of leisure, rest, and a deepening in the bonds of the Faith andbonds of the Faith andbonds of the Faith andbonds of the Faith and unity for all of us.unity for all of us.unity for all of us.unity for all of us. SAINT OF THE WEEK COUPLES CORNER What is prayer? What is prayer? What is prayer? What is prayer? How does one define prayer? Is there just one meaning of the word prayer? According to the Catholic Catechism, prayer is defined as a, “vital and personal relationship with the living and true God." So in order to have prayer all you need is a relationship with the one true God. It sounds simple, but it can often feel complex. Throughout our lives we can be introduced to many di>erent ways of prayer, but how do you know the right way for you? We are reminded that prayer is important in the readings today. We can learn from these stories that there is not a right or wrong way to do it. Much like Jesus and St Peter, we must trust in God and allow Him to guide you through our prayer journey. Make a commitment to pray with your spouse and see the many ways to pray.
POPE ST. JOHN IPOPE ST. JOHN IPOPE ST. JOHN IPOPE ST. JOHN I
He was born in Tuscany and elected pope in 523. It was a time of high political and religious tension. Theodoric the Ostrogoth, the ruler of Italy, was an Arian, while many of his subjects were Catholics. Initially tolerant, he became increasingly suspicious of the Catholics’ influence and political allegiance — above all, because they naturally had strong links with the Catholicism of the surviving eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople. Moreover, Arians in the eastern Roman Empire were being persecuted by the Catholic emperor, Justin, and they appealed to Theodoric for help.
Pope John I was sent on an embassy to the emperor, to ask for better treatment for the Arians. In this he succeeded; but the enthusiasm with which he was greeted in Constantinople excited Theodoric’s suspicions, and when he returned to Italy Theodoric had him imprisoned and he died from ill-treatment there a few days later.
Pope John I’s career reminds us what tolerance is and is not. Arianism was a dangerous heresy (by making the Son subordinate to the Father it made the Atonement virtually pointless) and there could be no compromise with it—but this did not mean that Arians themselves were to be persecuted for their beliefs. Then, as so often now, it was the state and not the Church that tried to use force to impose
Let us therefore, come boldly before the
throne of grace. That we may obtain
mercy & find grace to help in time of need.
— Hebrews 4:16
