FROM THE HEADMASTER’S DESK

Every now and again there is a home grown story to be told that is inspirational and uplifting. This time the story involves our First Team Cricketers. A story of failure, lessons well learned and applied successfully in a difficult situation. I pass on the story as told by their coach, Eswee Prinsloo: On Thursday morning last week the 1st cricket XI embarked on their annual Independent Schools’ cricket tour to Pietermaritzburg. Upon arrival on Thursday we played a tight match against WHPS and just managed to beat them on the very last ball thanks to a great team effort and some excellent bowling Adam Hawke. Friday saw us playing against Whitestone Preparatory, our opposition from Zimbabwe. The boys managed well in difficult batting and bowling conditions to outplay their weaker opposition. On Saturday we were up against our rivals from the previous year and tournament hosts, St Charles. An incredible fielding display and a record breaking bowling spell of 43 overs from the two leg spinners, Hlahla and Rogan, helped us to limit their very strong batting line up to only 163 runs in 60 overs. During the lunch break I could sense that our boys thought they had the game in the bag. To reach 163 in 52 overs with our batting line up should have been an easy task and I could see an atmosphere of complacency setting in. On 110 runs for the loss of 3 wickets and with Halstead-Cleak on 58, we were cruising to victory. And then it happened: We lost 7 wickets with a measly contribution of only 21 runs. This cataclysmic batting collapse meant that we came up short and lost the match by 31 runs. Never as a coach have I had to speak such stern words to a team after losing in such a manner. I challenged them on their lack of grit, determination and character. As a team, we should never be satisfied with being spectators on the field of play. This was a test to face up to the challenges that life sets us. I gave the boys 20 minutes alone to reflect and then to go to each of their team mates in turn and tell him what they appreciated most about him as a person. Speaking life into each other’s lives. In the meantime, the tournament favourites extended their winning streak with a 10 wicket victory over our previous opposition, WHPS. One of their batsman who previously made 160, three 90’s and two 80’s, scored 80 of their teams 92 runs. They were clearly the team to beat and they did not rate us as worthy opponents. We were scheduled to play them the next day. Continued on page 4 ….

From the very first ball on Sunday I could see that our boys had taken the lessons of the previous day to heart. They were encouraging each other in a way I had never seen before. Speaking words like:” You are a great bowler! I know you can bowl it in the channel. Keep it up…” Continuously building each another up with words of affirmation. All of this resulted in one of the best bowling spells I have seen from Gillespie. Lengacher capitalized on the sustained pressure claiming the scalp of their star batsman. Suddenly I could see an inner belief rising to new levels in our Pridwin boys. Our opponents on the other hand seemed to be in unfamiliar territory, and reacted rather poorly. We managed to restrict them to only 140 runs in the allowed 40 overs. During the lunch break their coaches and players avoided having lunch with us and seemed determined to end the match quickly, but the Pridwin boys were on a roll, determined to exploit the lessons learned on the day before. Our openers, Irwin and Rogan gave us a solid start. We needed to score at a rate of 6 runs to the over for victory. Good contributions from Halstead and Essop gave Badenhorst and Gillespie the opportunity to finish the game. Badenhorst finished with a magnificent 4 and a 6 off the last two balls to hand Pridwin a 6 wicket victory! It was a wonderful team effort. Every single player contributed in a special way to achieve this result. Certainly a career highlight for us as coaches. Eswee Prinsloo First Team Coach

INTERNATIONAL BOOK DAY

On 6 March 2014 is International Book Day! Last year we had an extremely successful ‘STOP – DROP – READ’ where everyone in the school stopped what they were doing and read for 15 minutes. Boys were seen, ‘nose-in-book’ up the stairs and under the trees enjoying reading! Pridwin would like to continue with this tradition and so will be surprising the boys and staff with a compulsory 15 minute “reading” period on the 6 March. The boys are also asked to donate a book for a charity. Thanks to the awesome generosity of the Pridwin boys last year, Akani School in Diepsloot was blessed with hundreds of beautiful books for their very sparse library. We also donated a large number of books to Queens High School for their library. Back to the top
