Lyonsdown News - 15th June 2018 From the Headmasters Desk If electricity can be seen as organised lightning, then perspecve must be important. On Monday, some governors and I toured the school on the final Learning Walk of the academic year. This was a great opportunity to see the range of wonderful teaching and learning that goes on at Lyonsdown. However, Thursday was equally enlightening, as I became a member of Year 5 for the day. I took part in a murder trial, studied worded Maths problems, managed not to wreck Tim Minchins music and drew a self-portrait in the style of Julian Opie. Year 5 even asked if I wanted to play at lunch – I can sll jump over a hula hoop, but was enrely lost when it came to an adventure game (it clearly all made sense to the girls!) The Summer Term is a hive of acvity: along with lessons and trips, we all want to make the most of the final few weeks of the school year. Year 6 and the rest of the School are deep into their preparaons for the producon, much work is being done behind the scenes to prepare for a new and improved school disco and end of year celebraon. On that note, I am delighted to be able to announce our celebraon guest speaker as Beth Tweddle MBE. Ms. Tweddle is a triple Olympian and World Champion gymnast who represented Great Britain for twelve years, winning a huge array of medals. Not only will Ms Tweddle be speaking at the celebraon and giving out awards, she will also be staying to chat to parents and children in the garden aſterwards. But before that, the Summer Fete is only a week away – thank you for your donaons and support. Wonderful events such as the Fete, Quiz and Movie Night could not run without you and the FLS Team. As you know, the Lyonsdown Learning Habit for this half-term is reflecon, and the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire is something that I am sure we have all been thinking of. As I watched coverage of the commemorave events, I was touched by the focus that Grenfell United have placed on celebrang a spirit of unity and collaboraonwhilst remembering the tragedy. My hearelt thanks for your generous donaons on Friday, as the School community wore green for Grenfell. Towards the end of the week, we welcomed the next generaon of Lyonsdown pupils. Lyonsdown News - 15th June 2018

From the Headmaster’s Desk

If electricity can be seen as organised lightning, then perspective must be important.

On Monday, some governors and I toured the school on the final Learning Walk of the academic year. This was a great opportunity to see the range of wonderful teaching and learning that goes on at Lyonsdown. However, Thursday was equally enlightening, as I became a member of Year 5 for the day. I took part in a murder trial, studied worded Maths problems, managed not to wreck Tim Minchin’s music and drew a self-portrait in the style of Julian Opie. Year 5 even asked if I wanted to play at lunch – I can still jump over a hula hoop, but was entirely lost when it came to an adventure game (it clearly all made sense to the girls!)

The Summer Term is a hive of activity: along with lessons and trips, we all want to make the most of the final few weeks of the school year. Year 6 and the rest of the School are deep into their preparations for the production, much work is being done behind the scenes to prepare for a new and improved school disco and end of year celebration. On that note, I am delighted to be able to announce our celebration guest speaker as Beth Tweddle MBE. Ms. Tweddle is a triple Olympian and World Champion gymnast who represented Great Britain for twelve years, winning a huge array of medals. Not only will Ms Tweddle be speaking at the celebration and giving out awards, she will also be staying to chat to parents and children in the garden afterwards.

But before that, the Summer Fete is only a week away – thank you for your donations and support. Wonderful events such as the Fete, Quiz and Movie Night could not run without you and the FLS Team.

As you know, the Lyonsdown Learning Habit for this half-term is reflection, and the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire is something that I am sure we have all been thinking of. As I watched coverage of the commemorative events, I was touched by the focus that Grenfell United have placed on celebrating “a spirit of unity and collaboration” whilst remembering the tragedy. My heartfelt thanks for your generous donations on Friday, as the School community wore green for Grenfell.

Towards the end of the week, we welcomed the next generation of Lyonsdown pupils. As I walked from speaking to Year 6, to being sold flowers by a three-year-old, my perspective was shifted entirely. In less than a decade, the flower seller that stood before me will leave Lyonsdown and, in that time, we need to fill every minute of the school day with sixty busy seconds.

All the best for a relaxing weekend.

Reception

RD enjoyed making a class caterpillar out of paper mache this week. They all decorated part of their hungry caterpillar to display in our classroom. Well done, RD, for working in collaboration. Miss Deamer and Mrs Hooshangi

Year 1

Year 1 trip to Ashridge Estate

The children had a wonderful time visiting the

National Trust venue, Ashridge Estate. They

became wild wood adventurers learning skills

through hands on outdoor activities such as

building dens, hunting mini beasts, exploring

woodlands and creating art work inspired by Andy

Goldsworthy, using natural materials found in the

woods.

“What I like most about the trip was making dens

and hunting for mini beasts.” Ire

“It was really fun building a den with my group.”

Savannah

“I enjoyed running in the meadow to the oak tree,

as fast I could.” Anusha

“I felt excited because I found some creatures and

my favourite one was a fat wriggly worm.” Daniel

“Building a den was magnificent.” Xanthe

“I felt tired after the school trip because I had an

exciting day.” Zoya

Year 2

This week has whizzed by. The children have been

watching The BFG film so that we can compare and

contrast it with Roald Dahl’s original book. The

children have also measured themselves using

their choice of equipment. After trial and error, it

was agreed that a tape measure rather than a ruler

was a more appropriate choice! The children

collected the data and made a graph of their

height in ascending order.

Have an enjoyable weekend.

The Year 2 Team

Year 2

Year 2 have embraced the World Cup. Each child has

chosen a team at random and we are busy

learning where the countries are and what their

flags are. We're all looking forward to the next

match.

Year 3

Yesterday, Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic day out in Epping Forest. They got to know (and hug) different species of tree and can now recognise them by their leaves and bark. They also learnt about survival in the forest and collaborated in teams to make some amazing shelters. A big thank you to the parent helpers who joined us on our trip.

Year 4

This week in History, Year 4 have learned about a number English monarchs between Alfred the Great and Edward the Confessor. They have been calculating the length of each reign, learning their order and thinking of ways that we might measure the success of each monarch. In Geography the girls have been finding out the rules of River Safety and have made some delightful posters. Well done.

Lyonsdown School

Chess player of the week

Awarded to: Despina 1T

Reason: Good concentration and clever

ideas suggested during a

demonstration lesson.

Well done, Despina

Mr Pattni

Artist of the Week

Congratulations Sophia r (Year 6)

Year 6 pupils have been studying the work of

American artist, Georgia O’Keefe. Sophia painted this

wonderful flower in her style, magnifying the shape of

the flower carefully then she used poster paints and

watercolour pencils skilfully to add colour, tone and

detail. Well done.

Lyonsdown Learning competition – Reflection. Last chance to have your work included in our permanent display!

I am pleased to announce the opening of our sixth Lyonsdown Learning habit poster competition, for reflection. To enter the competition to create the symbol for this learning habit, your son or daughter should design (by hand or on the computer) a poster on a piece of plain A4 paper that they think best represents this learning habit. The word reflection must be visible on the poster and the symbol design should be as clear as possible.

Entries produced by Upper School girls should be handed in to the School Office no later than Monday 2nd July at 10:40am. Children in Pre-Reception to Year 2 should hand their entries to their class teacher, who will deliver them. Please ensure that all entries are named on the back of the piece of paper. Results will be announced before the end of the Summer Term.

Mr Hammond’s Challenge 2

“Time travel is an extremely interesting subject, but is it possible and will it ever take place?”

How you present your answer is entirely up to you: posters, PowerPoints and speeches are three suggestions. I would suggest you study both theoretical (if it is possible to time travel) and practical (if the technology or conditions will ever exist to make it possible) points.

Please present your answers to Mr. Hammond at any stage in the Summer Term, but no later than Thursday 28th June at 3:30pm.

Lunch Menu: week commencing 18th June 2018

Yogurts & fresh fruit available daily.
