There are five scholarship areas: academic, art & design, drama, music and sport. Scholarships are worth up to 25% fee reducon. Pupils sit verbal and non verbal reasoning tests and (apart from academic) a praccal assessment too. The deadline to apply is Wednesday 18th October and the assessments will take place on Friday 17th November. Please speak to Julie Bradley if you would like to apply or if you require any further informaon. As we arrive at the end of the final week, let me wish everyone a well- deserved break. It has been an exceponally busy term and I hope that all the pupils will look back on some wonderful experiences. As I said in my address at Speech Day, it has been a huge privilege to lead the school this year and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with pupils, parents and colleagues as we seek to provide the very best of educaon to all the children at Saint Nicholas. I must thank the many parents for their posive feedback about Speech Day, it is a special day for the school and I was incredibly impressed with the way pupils, parcularly our youngest, coped with what was a fairly long ceremony. Having launched our new school video at Speech Day we will be embedding it onto our website next week. I hope that you will agree, it really does sum up what a super school we have at Saint Nicholas and I am grateful to all the pupils who were, as always, the true stars of the show. May I take this final opportunity to wish you the very best for the summer break. I look forward to seeing you all back safe and sound in September!

INDUCTION DAY

Report by Amelia, Year 6

On Wednesday 28th of June, Year 6 pupils had an induction day. A company called Wise Up Team Building came to the school to run the day and we participated in a game called the hub challenge. One person from each group had to go to the hub board and pick a game. My group (the competitors) did four games. My favourite game was the stepping stones - this was a real teamwork tester. We had to pass down the steps keeping one foot on a block each time or we lost that block. This session lasted until lunch, after which we had lessons. All the new pupils, joining in September came to the induction day and it was nice to get to know our new class members. I thought this year’s moving up day was a really fun day and I went home having tons of things to tell my mum as it was so jam-packed. I was so tired I fell straight to sleep.

ALEXANDER GLEN SWIRE MEMORIAL DAY The Swire family has long been closely involved with Saint Nicholas School. Second Lieutenant Alexander Glen Swire of the Essex Yeomanry was the younger brother of Sir John Swire. At the age of 17 he enlisted at the start of World War I. Less than a year later, on 13th May 1915, he was killed in action, aged just 18, at the Battle of Frezenberg Ridge near Potijze, Flanders.

May 2015 marked the centenary of the loss of Alexander Glen Swire. Saint Nicholas School, supported by the Swire family, recorded and remembered the loss through the introduction of the ‘Alexander Glen Swire Memorial Day’. The school has now established this memorial as an annual event. It is aimed at

providing pupils an opportunity to take part in a range of different activities, encouraging them to work together to explore new skills, knowledge and understanding.

This year pupils who will enter Year 6 and 7 in September participated in team building activities with Wise Up and really enjoyed meeting and bonding with pupils who will be new to the school in September.

WEDDING BELLS

BABY CHADWICK There is a home-grown romance at the school. We wish Adam and Shana, who both work in the school catering team, all the best for their forthcoming wedding. They are tying the knot on 15th July and we look forward to seeing the photographs!

We are pleased to announce the safe and healthy arrival of Esther Jayne Chadwick born on 15th June at 4.28pm, weighing 7lb and 15oz. Congratulations Mrs Chadwick!

ALUMNI COMMUNITY The Alumni committee continues to work hard to establish contact with former pupils and ex-staff members from Saint Nicholas. If you know of anyone who does not currently receive news from the school then we should like to hear from you. With your help we will contact these individuals to confirm if they would value receiving updates from the school.

We would also like to share much more news of former pupils from Saint Nicholas within the wider school community. With your help we can reconnect old friends with each other and we can show our current pupils the diversity of paths that may be taken after leaving the school.

Please email [email protected] if you have any questions about the Alumni community or if you have any contacts or news you are willing to share. Please be assured we always seek the permission of the ex pupil/member of staff before adding them to the Alumni database.

SAFER CYCLING Essex Safer Cycling are offering a free-of-charge two day ‘Bikeability’ course (formerly known as cycling proficiency). If you are interested in signing up your child, please email Nathalia Lugg asap on: [email protected]

RECEPTION SNAIL FUN For their final week of mini beasts, Reception children have been learning about snails. They went on a snail hunt around the grounds and found two in the muddy kitchen shed! The children enjoyed looking closely at the snails and observing how they moved. They discovered their mouths are underneath their foot and they have hundreds of teeth! Who knew?...

YEAR 1 MOON BUGGIES Form 1N pupils have been making moon buggies following their design. They had fun folding, measuring, cutting, painting and gluing things to create them.

UNIFORM REQUEST If you have any spare Reception aged uniform and PE kit that your child has outgrown we would be extremely grateful to have it.
