Montreal, 28 November – 2 December 2005
Item 5.2 of the provisional agenda*
IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS OF THE MILLENNIUM ECOSYSTEM ASSESSMENT
FOR THE FUTURE WORK OF THE CONVENTION
THE BIODIVERSITY SYNTHESIS REPORT
Note by the Executive Secretary
1. The Executive Secretary is circulating herewith, for the information of the participants to the
eleventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA),
the Synthesis Report for the Convention on Biological Diversity prepared by the Millennium Ecosystem
Assessment.
2. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) was carried out between 2002 and 2005 to assess
the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being and to analyse options available to enhance
the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems and their contributions to human well-being. The
Assessment responds to requests for information received through the Convention on Biological Diversity
and other international conventions and is also designed to meet needs of other stakeholders including
business, civil society, and indigenous peoples.
3. At its seventh meeting, the Conference of the Parties, in its decision VII/6, requested SBSTTA to
review the findings of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, including the synthesis report on
biodiversity, and to prepare recommendations to the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties.
4. Accordingly, the synthesis report on biodiversity is being made available to SBSTTA in this
information document. It is being provided in the language and form in which it was received by the
Secretariat of the Convention. The Summary for Decision Makers, which summarizes the main findings
of the full synthesis report, is available separately, in all official languages, as a working document for the
eleventh meeting of SBSTTA (UNEP/CBD/SBSTTA/11/7/Add.1).
