Museum Het Valkhof is located next to the

historic Valkhofpark, in the old heart of

Nijmegen. The museum offers you three

exceptional permanent collections:

Archaeology, Ancient Art and Modern Art.

Each year the museum organises several

stimulating temporary exhibitions plus

(children’s) activities for you to participate

in.

There are unique pieces to see, from

prehistory through the Roman era and Late

Middle Ages to the twentieth century right

up to the present. The Archaeology perma

nent collection lets you experience the life of

legionnaires and civilians in Roman times. In

the halls of Ancient Art, paintings, prints,

sculptures and crafts give a view into life in

the Kingdom of Nijmegen. In addition, the

museum’s permanent exhibition represents

Modern Art, mostly Dutch, up to Pop Art, so

evocative of the sixties, and Contemporary

Art.

Its contemporary, characteristic museum

building is an architecturally prominent

design by Ben van Berkel. The architect has

set an imposing facade onto the Kelfkens

bos.

Museum Het ValkhofInside, the rooms are charming and graceful,

creating a feeling of sophisticated light and

space. A monumental staircase leads you to

the light and spacious exhibition halls.

In the cosy Museum Café you can process

all your impressions and enjoy a nice lunch

or a cup of fresh coffee and homemade

cakes.

Modern ArtFrom Pop Art to contemporary expression

The highlight of the Modern Art collection

is the evocative art movement Pop Art, with

emphasis on its Dutch representatives, such as

Woody van Amen and Gustave Asselbergs.

Pop Art came out of the sixties of the last

century and its tradition visibly continues in

contemporary visual culture. There is also

a great deal of attention to the expressive

painting of the eighties and nineties of the 20th

century. The renewed attention to figu rative

representation is also regularly discussed.

Highlights of the Modern Art collection

What you should absolutely not miss in the

Modern Art collection are several prominent

works by Dutch and foreign artists, such as the

embroidered photo works by Berend Strik, the

‘Machines’ by Shinkichi Tajiri, ‘Mock Up’ by

Panamarenko and ‘Le nid dans la tête’ by

Gérard Garouste.

ArchaeologyDiscover the stories of the past!

The diverse Archaeology collection tells us

about the Prehistoric, Roman and Middle Ages

in Nijmegen and Gelderland.

In Roman times, Nijmegen (Noviomagus)

was the first and most important city in our

country. The numerous finds from this period

therefore form the core of the presentation

and put you in touch with the soldiers and

civilians who lived here then.

Marvel at the equestrian helmets with their

inscrutable facemasks, the monumental

limestone pillar gods from the time of Emperor

Tiberius (14-37 AD), the bronze portrait of

Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD), the silver cup

(kantharos) of Stevensweert, a masterpiece

of ancient goldsmithing, and through many

precious holdings of bronze and glass.

Treat yourself to a journey through the Roman

Empire on the more than three-metre long

‘map of Peutinger,’ of which the museum

possesses a copy of the first printed edition

from 1598. >

> Many exceptional archaeological finds come

from graves. This is the case for the remains of

two Celtic chariots from Wijchen and Nijme-

gen, once the proud possessions of a local

ruler in the Iron Age. The grave of a Frankish

horseman from Lent dates back to the Early

Middle Ages (7th century). He is buried in full

regalia, with his two swords and his horse in

full harness.

G.M. KAM Ceramics Room

On the ground floor is the G.M. Kam Ceramics

Room, which is named after collector and

museum founder Gerard Kam (1836-1922).

Here you will find a wide selection from the

museum’s rich pottery collection, which was

largely collected by him. The collection covers

more than 4,500 years, from circa 2600 BC up

to the beginning of the 20th century.

Paintings, silver, medieval images:

the extensive collection of Ancient Art tells

stories about the history of Nijmegen and

the region.

Nijmegen has a special history and is known

as the oldest city in the Netherlands. The histo-

ric Valkhof, a stone’s throw from the museum,

was occupied by Frankish kings and the dukes

of Guelders after the Romans and Batavians.

In their environment a thriving city grew,

full evidence of which can be found in the

museum.

The Valkhof has also inspired many artists,

such as he famed monumental canvas of

seventeenth-century master Jan van Goyen.

The picturesque surroundings of the city still

captivate artists.

Ancient ArtArt and culture from the oldest city in the Netherlands

In the nineteenth and twentieth century,

painters like Jan Toorop and B.C. Koekkoek

came to the City on the Waal.

Take a look in the prints gallery

The prints gallery is a special room dedicated

to small presentations from the more fragile

collection of works on paper. In the gallery you

can relax and enjoy these prints and drawings.

Peace of Nijmegen Room

The Peace of Nijmegen Room introduces

you to a special story from Nijmegen and

European history: the Peace of Nijmegen.

Nijmegen was the political centre of Europe

from 1676 to 1679. Negotiations on ending

several European wars were held in the city.

The ambassadors of the European powers in

Nijmegen expected that the locations where

the negotiations were to be held would match

their high profile. To provide the negotiation

rooms with appropriate decoration, two sets of

tapestries were hastily bought from the

famous studio of the brothers Michiel and

Philippe Wauters in the city of Antwerp, then

the centre of tapestry-weaving. As of 2010,

one of the two sets can be seen at Museum

Het Valkhof on a rotating basis.
