Host & Wine May 1st— May 31 In Memory of: the Deceased Members of the Sandarciero Family

I remind you, my daughter, that as often as you hear the clock strike the third hour, immerse yourself completely in My mercy, adoring and glorifying it; invoke its omnipotence for the whole world, and particularly for poor sinners; for at that moment mercy was opened wide for every

soul. In this hour you can obtain everything for yourself and for others for the asking; it was the hour of grace for the whole world—mercy triumphed over justice. (145)

This weekend we celebrate the beautiful feast of Corpus Christi-The Body of Christ. It is the affirmation of our Catholic belief that Jesus remains present in His Church in His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity under the appearances of bread and wine. It looks like bread; it tastes like bread; it looks like wine; it tastes like wine— but it is not bread; it is not wine. It is the Body and Blood of Christ truly present through the action of the priest. The Eucharist is such an incredible gift; Jesus remaining with us. There are so many things that could and should be said. However, this morning, I want to focus in simply one thought: Do our actions speak of our belief? We say we believe that Jesus is present, but do our actions really express that belief? Perhaps it is good to remind ourselves of some “little ways” which speak about our belief. Silence. Sometimes it seems we come in to God’s house-Jesus’ presence—and we give little or no attention to Him. Immediately we start talking and laughing and greeting others– and, sometimes, it goes on even right through the Holy Mass! Church is a time to be silent with others and to spend time talking with Jesus. Our silence in God’s house is poor. Genuflection. I realize that some of us have “old bones” and so it is harder for us to genuflect and kneel –but the reality is, many of us come in and out of Jesus’s presence with no sign of reverence or respect, almost as if Jesus wasn’t with us in the Eucharist! Imagine someone coming into your home not greeting you, not speaking with you, not giving you any attention! We would never think of being so rude and yet, often we are that rude with Jesus. Confession. It is a wonderful thing that so many of us come to receive Communion every Sunday. However, are we prepared or do we just come because “it’s the thing to do”? How many of us come to receive the Eucharist spiritually unprepared? We haven’t been to Mass regularly; we have committed serious sin and have not confessed; we receive without any thought as to what we are doing and whom we are receiving and why we are receiving. Reverence. It is so common to see people coming to receive Communion while talking to the person in front or behind them on line and going back to their seats continuing to talk! Often people come to receive Communion chewing gum! (There is a Eucharistic fast: one may have only water for one hour before receiving Communion!) Many come to Communion to receive in the hands, trying to grab the sacred Host forgetting first to make a sign of reverence, a “bow” before receiving and then placing their left hand on top of their right, saying “Amen”, and consuming the Eucharist immediately. Sometimes it seems like we are coming with no thought that we are receiving Jesus Himself! Respect. Some people may find it unnecessary to address the question of what to wear to Church (particularly in the summer months!) The opinion is that God doesn’t care what we wear. Maybe, but the manner of our dress can affect, either positively or negatively, the way we worship. Christ Himself invites us to take part in His sacred banquet. Let’s be honest: we would never think of going to a wedding reception or a White House dinner dressed the way many of us come to Church. There needs to be a balance. Tank tops, short-shorts, T-shirts with vulgar or double-meaning sayings are all inappropriate. We need to once again think twice about how we are dressing for Holy Mass, especially in the summer. Jesus is inviting us to a sacred meal with Him! The feast of Corpus Christi calls us to reflect on the great gift we have in the Blessed Sacrament. When we receive Communion, we say “Amen”-”I believe”—Do your actions towards the Eucharist reflect your belief? God bless you!

"Eu acredito".
