HISTORY OF COLLEGE AND BASEBALL PROGRAM ‹‹‹

2015 LAWSON STATE BASEBALL 5

Lawson State Community College, located inthe southwestern section of Birmingham, iscomposed of two main divisions--an academicdivision and a career/technical division.

The career/technical division was first estab-lished as a result of the Wallace-PattersonTrade School Act of 1947. This Act establishedWenonah Vocational and Trade School on August 24, 1949. The school opened witheleven instructors and seventy-five students enrolled in ten courses and one related subject. The first president of the school was Dr.Theodore A. Lawson. The initial funding received by the technical division was $75,000.

The academic division began as WenonahState Junior College, which was founded underAct No. 93 of the May 3, 1963 Legislature. TheCollege was created in 1965 and was namedafter its first president in 1969. In 1967,Wenonah State Junior College held its first com-mencement exercise with 33 graduates. In1968, another milestone was accomplishedwhen the college received its accreditation bythe Commission on Colleges of the SouthernAssociation of Colleges and Schools. In 1969,there were 300 students enrolled at LawsonState Junior College. On October 1, 1973,Wenonah State Technical Institute andWenonah State Junior College merged and be-came one institution known as Lawson StateCommunity College.

With it’s long-standing history, there has been ashort list of presidents, Dr. Theodore A. Lawson,1949-1971; Dr. Leon Kennedy, 1971-1978; Dr.Jesse J. Lewis, 1978-1987; and Dr. Perry W.Ward, 1987 through the present time.

Bessemer State Technical College was createdunder legislative Act No. 93 of the 1963 Alabamalegislature. The City of Bessemer purchased 34acres for the college site. Bessemer State accepted its first students on April 4, 1966, withsix programs of study, 47 daytime students and30 night students. The college was initiallyknown as the State Vocational-Technical Schoolbut the first official name was the John R.

Pelham Technical Trade School. The name waschanged later to Bessemer State Trade School. On August 16, 1966, the name was againchanged by legislative act to Bessemer StateTechnical Institute; the college status and namewere achieved in 1973. Five presidents servedBessemer State Technical College: Otto B.Smith, 1964-1967; S. C. Porch, 1967-1971;Euel Snider, 1971-1972; Charles L. Payne,1972-1984; and Mike Bailey, 1984-2004.

As of July 1, 2005, Bessemer State TechnicalCollege merged with Lawson State CommunityCollege. Under the merged college, LawsonState has seen its most celebrated years. In2011, Lawson State was featured as a Top 50Community College, making history in the state. And, in 2013, it moved from 33 out of 50 on thelist (of top colleges) to #5. Lawson State hasalso been recognized by the White House (andcelebrated by the Obama Administration) as aChampion of Change.

History of Baseball ProgramBaseball became an official sport at LawsonState in 1974. Players came mainly from thesurrounding Jefferson County area, and as faraway as Florida and Jamaica. Practices wereusually held on the college campus and at theFair Park Arena. Local games were played atlocations in Fairfield, North Birmingham andat the historic Rickwood Baseball Field.

There were three divisions and Lawson Statewas a part of the Northern Division. that alsoincluded Bevill State, Gadsden State, South-ern Union, Snead State, Shelton State andWalker. Though competing at a high level andtwice making the playoffs, the baseball pro-gram was eliminated in 1980 due to budgetconstraints.

In the following years, the interest continuedin the sport of baseball at Lawson State. Afteryears of planning and preparation, baseballreturned to the sports line-up in the 2005-2006academic year featuring a brand new baseballcomplex. Lawson State baseball has beenthriving and making headlines ever since.

››› 2015 SPRING SEASON OUTLOOK

According to Doug Kovash, second year headcoach, the LSCC Baseball team will be a muchimproved baseball squad team this spring. “Weare light years ahead of where were one yearago,” remarked Coach K. Better players, compet-ing at a higher intensity and focus at practice andworkouts and improved game day execution arejust a few of things this team possesses.Luke Hastings, 2014 All Conference 3B North

Division emerged as one of the top hitting andfielding third baseman in the ACCC North and hada tremendous fall. Juan Givan played all 50games after transferring from UAB in January tolead the Cougar offense with a .310 batting aver-age. Givan signed with Division I Nicholls State(LA) in November and has developed into theteam’s quiet, steady leader. Givan will start @ SS.His move from 2B to SS opens the way for soph-omore, Luke Ates and newcomers, Jared Benson& Caleb Ledbetter to fight for playing time at 2B.Ates is versatile and could see time @ 3B whenHastings pitches. Benson was one of the top hitters on the team in the fall while Ledbetterplayed better defensively. Cody Cox, slick fielding SS, should see plenty

of time as well – either as Givan's back up or as apotential starter at 2B. In addition, the Cougarspicked up another UAB mid-year transfer this yearin Josh Vines. Vines was the starting SS for thepowerful Hoover HS team in 2014. “We have somuch more depth in the infield this year. “Not onlydo we have talent; we have options offensivelyand defensively as well,” said Coach K.

Rookie Russell Phillips will play 1B and hit inthe middle of the order. “Russell gives us some-thing we never had in 2014 – a legitimate gap-to-gap power hitter who will drive in runs in themiddle of the order,” Kovash said excitedly. Lookfor the Cougars offense to improve their run

LAWSON STATE BASEBALLproduction in 2015 with an exciting mix of power, tough outs that produce quality at bats and greatteam speed.

“We are looking forward to the February 3rdseason opener,” said Coach Kovash. The pitch-ing staff will be anchored by three sophomores,Trey Johns, Scott Falkinburg & Luke Hastings.Three freshmen had outstanding fall campaignsand should start throughout the year. Look forSeth McWaters, Nick DeSantis & AndrewFaulkner pick up tons of innings this spring. Dualposition player, Dallas Oliver, will see plenty of op-portunities in relief when not running down ballsin the outfield. Kelby Hallmark, Kyle Underwood,Ben Swicord and Snead State transfer lefty AaronAnderson round out the pitching staff. Gentry Ford is the lead candidate for the posi-

tion of catcher for the Cougars. Angel Castillo andSpencer Black will also share time with Ford. Theoutfield consists of seven talented athletes whorun well, play good defense, and throw the ballwell. LaDeavon Matthews, Gordon JC (GA)transfer, and Dallas Oliver will transition to the outfield after playing 1B & 3B in the fall. Both bringa nice blend of offense, power, and speed to thelineup. Mason Schoettlin has a slight edge oversecond year outfielders Scott Falkinburg, DarioneAdkison, and Eric Yarbrough for the third outfieldspot.

Overall, the 2015 team has great team speedand great depth at all positions. We can also putthe ball in the hands of six to eight pitchers andexpect to win. The team’s goal is to work hardand strive to compete for Lawson State’s first-everberth in the ACCC post season tournament inOzark, AL in May. “If everything comes togetheras we think it can, we believe we can make historyat Lawson State this season,” said Coach K.
