Lincoln County WomanTests Positive for West Nile
The first confirmed human case of West Nile Virus (WNV)insouthcentralIdahohasbeenreported. “Thefemale,inherthirties,washospitalizedandisnowrecoveringathome,”saidChristiSkuza,SouthCentralPublicHealthDistrict(SCPHD)Epidemiologist.“ThisisagreatremindertothepublicthatWestNileisstillaconcern,soeveryoneshouldtakeextraprecautions.” SymptomsofWestNileinfectionincludefever,head-aches,bodyaches,fatigue,nausea,vomiting,andsome-timesswollenlymphglandsoraskinrash.Moresevereinfectionsaremarkedbyarapidonsetofahighfever,includingheadache,bodyaches,disorientation,neckstiff-ness,andtremors.Symptomstypicallyoccur2to14daysafterthebiteofaninfectedmosquito. Themoreyou’reoutdoors,thehighertheriskofbeingbittenbyaninfectedmosquito.Precautionsinclude: UsinginsectrepellentcontaininganEPA-registeredac-tiveingredient,suchasDEET(parentsareadvisednottoapplyrepellantthatcontainsmorethan10percentDEETon their children). Wear long sleeves, pants, and loose-fit-tingclothingatdawnandduskwhenmosquitoesaremostactiveandfeeding.Ifpossible,considerstayingindoorsduringthesehours.Makesureyouhavegoodscreensonyourwindowsanddoorstokeepmosquitoesout.Getridofmosquitobreedingsitesbydrainingstandingwaterfromflower pots, buckets, and barrels. Bertha Mae (Boesiger)Whitehead,96,aresidentofWendell,formerlyofShosho-ne,passedawayWednesday,September2,2015atMeridianCareandRehabinMeridian. BerthawasthesecondchildofAntonandMaryBoesiger,emigrants from SwitzerlandwhohomesteadedinnorthernShoshone.Berthaattendedaone-roomcountryschoolhouseandgraduatedfromShoshoneHighSchoolin1936. OnJune5,1936,shemarriedWilburWhitehead,ahandsomeguitarplayerwhocamefromtheKansasDustBowl.Theyweremarried63yearsatthetimeofWilbur’spassing. Theystruggledthroughthedepressionerawithdadworkingatvariousjobstosupportthegrowingfamily.AtthestartofWWII,theypackeduptheirbelongingsandthreechildrenandheadedtoOakland,CaliforniatoworkintheKaiserShipyardsuntiltheendofthewar.TheyhadsavedmoneyandcamebacktoShoshoneandpurchasedafarmnorthwestofShoshone. Momwasahardworkerasahousewife,mother,irrigator,cowmilker,raisingchickenstobutcher,sellingeggsandraisingalargegarden,alltohelpfeedthefamily. In1960,dadhadadebilitatingfarmaccident.MomwenttoworkattheShoshoneNursingHomeuntiltheypurchasedtheWendellMotelandCoffeeShop.Atthetime,shebecameacook,waitressandhotelmaid,butcouldalwayssqueezeinagameofBridgeandGinRummy. Berthaissurvivedbyherchildren,LeotaHill,ofEagle,Ida-ho,MariannaMorris,ofMeridian,Idaho,andGaryWhite-head, of Kennewick, Washington; 7 grandchildren; and 6great-grandchildren. Shewasprecededindeathbyherparents,2brothers,MaxandGene;3sisters,Ida,Louise,andMarie;1granddaughter,Debra,and2son’s-in-law,JerryHillandJackMorris. In1963theymovedtoLasVegas.Shortlythereafter,Leestart-edworkingattheLasVegasConventionCenterasasecretary.BythetimesheretiredinAugust1994shehadachievedthetitleofconventioncoordinator.Shecoordinatedthemove-in,move-out,andalotinbetweenforsomeofthebiggestconventionsintheindustry:COMDEX,NABandCES.Shewasamazing.Shefoundherniche.RichardHarrisdiedinApril1994after30yearsofbattlingMultipleSclerosis.
