FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE Founded by the United Methodist Church in 1883, Florida Southern is the oldest private college in the state of Florida. FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK QUICK FACTS

MOCCASIN CROSS COUNTRY The Moccasin cross country teams have been a dominant power in the Sunshine State Conference. The men’s team has a current string of 12 straight SSC titles and has finished first or second at the SSC championship 14 straight years. The women’s squad has won six SSC crowns and finished first or second 13 straight years. Individually, Florida Southern has had the men’s individual SSC champion 10 of the last 12 years, including two-time champions Gary Crossan (1998-99) and Tyrone Bell (2004-05). Florida Southern’s women have claimed six SSC individual titles, including back-to-back wins by Alli Tatangelo (1999-2000). In 2006, SSC women’s champion, Jael Koech, placed sixth at the NCAA Division II Championship, making her the Moccasins’ first two-time All-American in cross country. She was 12th in 2005. The women’s team has made three trips to the NCAA Divi-sion II Championship, finishing 11th in 1999, 21st in 2001 and 15th in 2006. The men’s team made a fourth straight Division II Championship appearance in 2007, finishing 21st overall. The men were 20th in 2006, 13th in 2005 and 20th in 2004. The women have had nine top-five regional finishes, while the men have finished in the top five eight times at NCAA regional appearances including 2007’s first-ever regional title.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amaz-ing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

DR. ANNE B. KERRCollege President S i n c e h e r u n a n i m o u s appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Under her guidance, the institution has renewed its commitment to educating the whole person -- academically, socially, spiritually,

and physically -- so that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr led a comprehensive Strategic Plan designed to enrich all facets of the College’s student-centered culture. She is dedicated to enhancing a student life culture that provides opportunities for active learning and leadership; promoting a scholarly environment where professors have outstanding records of achievement that support innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction; and to strengthening further the College’s outstanding scholar-athlete program that models the highest standards of NCAA Division II athletics.

As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include the newly completed Barnett Residential Life Center and the soon-to-be completed state-of-the-art Christoverson Humanities Building, both designed by world-renowned architect Robert A. M. Stern; TuTu’s Cyber Café in the Roux Library and the adjacent McKay Archives Center; the expansion of wireless Internet access, campus-wide technology upgrades, and the Rinker Technology Center, currently under construction; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright designed campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida and All Saints’ Academy. An avid supporter of the arts, she is the current president of the Board of Trustees of the Polk Museum of Art. She is in the first year of her term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. She and her husband Dr. Roy Kerr have a fifteen-year-old son Ed. Roy Kerr has authored two books about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game” (2007) and “Sliding Billy Hamilton: The Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Hitter” (2009).

PETE MEYERDirector of Athletics In 2008-09, Pete Meyer served his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern - following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike

Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (2001-08). Meyer was the Moccasins’ head baseball coach from 2002 through 2008. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, as the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center as well as the the water ski program and campus intramurals also fall under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s representative

on the Sunshine State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirty-four Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 21-year old Ross, 19-year old Mitchell and 18-year old Megan.

JAMIE MORENOHEAD COACH

In his first season (2008-09) as Florida Southern’s cross country/track coach, Jamie Moreno led his men’s cross country team to its 12th con-secutive Sunshine State Confer-ence championship. As a result, he was named SSC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. The women’s team placed second in

the SSC Meet, marking the 13th straight year they have fin-ished no worse than second. Moreno came to FSC after serving as the cross country/track coach at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. “I’m excited about the opportunity to come to FSC and build on the success and tradition of the cross country pro-grams,” Moreno said at the time of his hiring. “Every sport at Florida Southern has that same winning tradition, which shows me that the administration fully supports athletics and that means a lot to me.” The men’s cross country team has made four trips to the Division II championship, placing 21st in 2007. They had an individual qualifier in Scott Mackley last fall. The wom-en’s team has made three NCAA appearances as a team and has had three individual qualifiers. Carolyne Kwambai was an individual qualifier last fall for the second straight year. While the Moccasin cross country program is well-es-tablished, Moreno is working to upgrade the status of the track program. FSC competed in eight meets in the spring, primarily with cross country runners competing in various distance various events. The college wants to upgrade the program to a full-fledged track program, including field events. He begins serving a four-year term this year (2009-2010) on the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee. Moreno had been at William Woods, an NAIA school, since 2004, when he was hired to begin the cross country/track programs there. In four seasons there, he produced three women’s conference championships and one men’s conference championship in cross country and a total of seven national qualifiers in track. He earned four confer-ence cross country coach of the year awards (three with the women, one with the men) and one women’s region coach of the year award, as well as conference women’s outdoor track coach of the year in 2008. Before going to William Woods, he was head cross country coach and assistant track coach at Warrensburg (Mo.) High School for eight years. His girls’ cross coun-

try teams made five appearances in the state cross country meet, finishing in the top 10 each year and winning the state title in 2003. He was the Class 3A girls’ coach of the year in 2002 and 2003. His boys’ cross country teams reached the state meet eight times, finishing in the top 16 each of the eight years. He was the Class 3A boys’ coach of the year in 2001, when his team finished second. Moreno was a four-year cross country/track letterman at the University of Central Missouri. He was a member of the 1993 UCM cross country team that placed fifth at the NCAA Division II Championship. He also served as a volunteer assistant track coach at UCM from 2000-04. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from UCM in 1994, then earned his master’s degree in edu-cational technology from UCM in 2001. He and his wife, Carolyn, were married last fall.

Twins Ben and Drew Martucci return for the men’s team while Chris and Josh Meadows, also twins, join the men’s team this season. Bill Duncan(1929 - 1998)

Bill Duncan graduated from Florida Southern in 1959 and was an educator and administrator in the Polk County school system. He was continually involved with running and track, holding records both as a participant and as a coach. Duncan always gave his best effort and instilled that philosophy in his students and athletes. The Bill Duncan Scholarship is awarded annually to the outstanding Polk County student in distance running. Duncan was inducted into the Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame, as well as the Polk County School Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in athletics, his high quality of character and his notable leadership. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Charlie Fanning of the men’s team and Karys White-head of the women’s squad, were each named recipents of the NCAA Division II Academic Achievement Award in 2008-09. The duo are among 46 student-athletes so hon-ored from Florida Southern College. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete had to have an overall grade point average of at least 3.50, had to have completed at least two years of college work and had to have been an active member of an athletic team. The Division II Academic Achievement Awards were first presented last year. They are sponsored by the Divi-sion II Athletics Directors Association and presented by WeatherPORT.

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single sport organization to the Division II “Conference of Champions.” Since its inception, the con-ference has grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schools have won NCAA national titles (71 total) in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball, and are nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s rowing and women’s basketball. The SSC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, softball and women’s rowing. The first women’s SSC championships began in 1981-82. FSC MEN FIRST, WOMEN SECOND IN 2008-09 SSC MAYOR’S CUP

Florida Southern finished tied for first in the men’s division and second in the women’s division for the Sunshine State Conference Mayor’s Cup for all-sports competition for the 2008-09 academic year. The award is sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC schools are located. The Mayor’s Cup recognizes competition in six sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis and eight sports for women: basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Points in each sport are awarded by the number of schools sponsoring teams in the respective sports. The 2008-09 academic year marked the 23rd year of the Mayor’s Cup competition. FSC has won the men’s division 11 times and also won the women’s division 10 times.

DIRECTIONS TO FSC

From Orlando Take I-4 West to exit 33. Turn left off exit and turn right at sec-ond stoplight. Continue to major intersection at Memorial Blvd and turn left. Go 1/2 mile to Ingraham Avenue and turn right. Go to McDonald and turn right. Parking lot is on the left, just past Barnett Field.

From Orlando Airport Take 417 South (toll road) to I-4 West and follow directions above.

From Tampa/St. Petersburg/Fort Myers Follow I-4 East to Exit 27 (570E, Polk Parkway exit). Go approximately 6.1 miles to Exit 7 (South Florida Avenue - toll: 50 cents). Turn left onto 37N (South Florida Avenue) and go to Mc-Donald Street. Turn right on McDonald and turn go seven blocks to the campus. Park in the second parking lot on the right (Barnett Field).

From Palm Beach/Fort Lauderdale Take Florida Turnpike north to Yeehaw Junction (Hwy 60). Take Hwy 60 to 98 North to Lakeland. Watch for Grove Park Shopping Plaza and turn left at Crystal Lake and go to Lake Hollingsworth Drive. Turn right and go to Ingraham and turn right. Go to stop sign (McDonald) and turn left. Parking lot will be on the left, just past Barnett Field.

Moccasin Athletic Training Services

Al Green, MA, ATC, LAT, EMTAl Green was named assistant athletic director and head athletic trainer in July 2007. Prior to joining Florida Southern College, Green was the general manager and athletic trainer for the Lakeland Thunderbolts, an indoor professional football team. He served as the director of marketing and business development and coordinator of athletic training services for Healthcare Management Systems (HMS), a Lakeland-based company. The former head athletic trainer and athletic administrator at the University of Kentucky, he has served in various capacities for the athletic training profession at the state, district and national levels. Green serves as the chairperson for the National Athletic Trainers Association Public Relations Committee. He was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of

Fame in 2004. He also serves the community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for the Polk County Fire Department. Green is mar-ried to Sue Stanley-Green, FSC athletic training educational program director and also an NATA Hall of Fame member. They have one daughter, Logan. Green has three older children, Douglas, Jennifer and Tracy.

Kelly Cox, MA, ATC, LATKelly Cox came to Florida Southern College in 2008 from the University of South Florida where she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Big East Champion women’s softball team and the football team. She also completed an internship with the University of South Florida’s football team in the fall of 2005 after graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology with a specialization in Athletic Training and a minor in Health Science Education. While at the University of Florida she worked with the football, women’s soccer, and swimming and diving teams, as well as with local high school teams and at Shands Or-thopedic Institute. During her time at USF she received her Master’s degree in Exercise Science through the Physical

Education Department. Cox is a certified clinical instructor and teaches in the FSC physical education department.

Lindsey Williams, MS, ATC, LAT, EMTLindsey Williams graduated from Florida Southern College in 2002 with a degree in athletic training. She served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at The Ohio State University for two years, covering a variety of sports. She also worked in a physical therapy clinic and in orthopedic sales. Williams is an EMT and worked in the Columbus, Ohio, area prior to moving back to Florida in 2006. She now serves as a volunteer EMT with Polk County EMS. Williams is a certified clinical instructor and teaches in the FSC athletic training education and physical education programs. She has an English bulldog named Peanut.

Brian Simerville, MA, ATC, LATBrian Simerville came to Florida Southern College in 2007 from the University of South Florida, where he served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the men’s soccer team. While at USF, he earned his master of arts degree in physical education: exercise science. He earned his bachelor of science degree in sports medicine: athletic training from Eastern Michigan University. Simerville is a certified clinical instructor and teaches in the FSC athletic training education and physical education programs.

Every student-athlete at Florida Southern College is entitled to quality medical care while participating as a member of an athletic team. The athletic training/medical staff coordinates and delivers professional and comprehensive preventive care, treatment, rehabilitation and counseling services to all FSC student-athletes. The goal of athletic training services is to keep each student-athlete healthy and injury free. In the case of injury or illness, the staff will provide quality medical care enabling the student-athlete to return to participation both as a student and an athlete. The athletic training staff is comprised of four full-time nationally-certified and state-licensed athletic trainers. Florida Southern College also has an athletic training education program. Athletic training students from the program assist the staff athletic trainers in daily operations of the athletic training facility. The athletic training facility is located in Jenkins Field House. The facility is well equipped to provide treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The FSC sports medicine team is comprised of two orthopedic team physicians and consulting physicians in several specialties. All of these professionals work together to meet the student-athlete’s health care needs.
