• Turnover signal

• A ‘Total package’- Ellipse, Truthfulness, Relevance,

(in 1 scene) Conversational Implicature

2

Ross: Umm, I'm sorry Judy, I couldn't find that bowl that you and Jack were looking for. (Pretending to be all grown up and mature.)

Ross: (in a high pitched voice) Monica! (Stop it/ Shut up/ You messed it up)

Conversational Implicature

3

Chandler: Right on! Oh! Uh, but, don’t take too long okay? 'Cause uh, we're gonna test out our fake ID's tonight, right Clifford Alverez? (Have some fun. Name on fake ID)

Ross: Listen, Roland Chang, if things go well, I’m gonna be out with her all night.(Name on fake ID)

Ross: Hey! (Don’t insult my sister!)

4

Mrs. Geller: (holding two pies) Monica, why don't you finish off these pies? I don't have any more room left in the fridge. (Monica can easily eat two pies/ usually clears the leftovers when there’s no room for storage.)

Mr. Geller: Well Judy, you did it! She's finally full! (You finally made her know she should stop eating.)

5

Mr. Geller: Wow, love your new nose! (Rachel had plastic surgery.)

Mrs. Geller: Jack. (You shouldn’t be mentioning that.)

Mr. Geller: What? Dr. Wilson's an artist! (What did I do wrong?)

Rachel: No, God! Please, let me! (I want to get out of this awkward situation!)

6

Chandler: Oh my god! (Wow, you are so thin/ hot.)

Ross: Dude! (She’s my sister./ Stop staring at Monica!)

Mrs. Geller: Yes, yes Monica is thin. It's wonderful. But what we really want to hear about is Ross's new girlfriend. (OK, finish talking about Monica. Let’s hear about Ross. Ross is her favorite child.)

Ross: ~ her name is Carol. ~she's on the lacrosse team and the golf team. ~She plays for both teams! (Carol, Ross’s ex-wife is a lesbian, so it’s an allusion of Ross’s future.) 7

Truthfulness

Mrs. Geller: Oh, well, I'm so glad you brought him here then.

(Then why did you come in the first place?)

8

Ross : ..Does it, does it feel weird around here now? You know since I’ve been away at college.

Rachel : Oh! No, not really

9

Ross: Well, that's cool. So did… (Actually, Ross did miss Rachel, and he wished she had too.)

Chandler: Oh yeah, it was great. You should be a chef. (Didn’t really mean anything.)

Fat Monica: Okay! (Takes it really seriously- Okay. I’ll become a chef.)

10

Rachel: Actually, you know that's not the Thanksgiving I was talking about.

Monica: Yes, it was! (Now, drop it!) -She doesn’t want to talk about this subject anymore. 11

Turnover signalMonica: What?

Chandler: Nothing! I said, I said "You're so great" and then

I just,

I just stopped talking!

Monica: You said you loved me!

I can't believe this!

Chandler: No I didn't!

Monica: Yes, you did!

Chandler: No I didn't!

Monica: You love me!

Chandler: No I don't! Stop it!

Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!

Truthfulness

12

Total package- Phoebe’s Thanksgivings

•Ellipse: More bandages! / Gauze! (Can I have some more bandages?)•Relevance: It has nothing to do with Thanksgiving.•Truthfulness: The reaction shown when former life Phoebe’s arm falls out.•Conversational implicature: The cut-in says 1862 and 1915 (one is the year after the Civil war started, the other one is WW1), which imply what wars they were.

13

Cultural aspects

• Appearance Plastic surgery, Severe diet

• Holidays-Who do we spend the holidays with?

Women’s responsibility in the kitchen

• Pretending to be all grown up - (Using fake ID)

14

Appearance

• Similarities- In both cultures, attractive appearance is much preferred.

1.Plastic surgery

(several unauthorized procedures)

Rachel, before she had her nose done.

Before After 1. Current features

After 2.(a procedure to reform) 15

2. Weight loss

Monica goes through a severe diet to impress Chandler. Hannah ‘transformed’ to ‘Jenny’ after

being rejected and hurt. 16

Holidays

• Differences:1. dishwashing2. spending the holiday with friends

17

Pretending to be all grown up

• Similarity: High school students or (still) under-aged college students forge fake IDs to go to bars and have fun.
