• Information Technology has been driving force in the development of universities for some time now.

• A robust technical infrastructure and sound network architecture is needed.• Network Architecture is the guide for the technical design of the network

using high-level design principles.• Good network architecture meet and adapt to the specific need of the

university and also provide flexibility, scalability and manageability.• CWN should support Next Generation Network (NGN) with integrated

services as well as Internet-of-Things (IoT) layout.

• IT is a service to the university much like Academic, Student Administration, Finance and Accounts etc. – not to be treated in isolation.

• An operating model is needed based on existing business process in order to position IT.

• One may view IT both as cost center as well as revenue generator.• Investments need to be made based on expected organizational

transformation and strategic growth.• Develop a cost metric to assess cost of each IT Service.• Need a strategy for identifying areas of technology adoption and innovation.• Draw policies for leveraging local resources for enabling collaboration.

• Cloud Computing, BYOD, e-Governance, Analytics are new demands.• Demands arise from ERP or LMS system of the institution and the level of

support needed.• Traditional computer labs, classrooms must be supported while exploring and

integrating newer technologies.• As institutions move to outsource more solutions, staff need to assume new

roles and form new units for service management and strategy.• Will the institute be able to adapt to dynamic environment?• Fund crunch often require smaller units to be consolidated towards

centralization with more specialist and fewer generalist roles.

• Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is here for supporting design and delivery of quality leaning experiences.

• Institutions need to understand about goal, audience and quality of experience in their MOOC endeavor.

• Institutions need to balance between broad availability of online courses vis-à-vis restrictive approach.

• Right scope and positioning of the online courses is very important.• Faculty need to adjust to the new way of instruction; a deviation from purely

lecture based model of course delivery.• A well developed assessment strategy is needed against online courses as

traditional pedagogical theory do not hold any longer.

• Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) trend is rising and is supported.• Challenge of network coverage has been surpassed by the bandwidth requirements

due to density of devices.• Upgrading of devices more frequently is the newer challenge.• Providing contents ranging from class schedule to campus news to faculty, staff and

students anywhere, anytime and on any device is the biggest challenge.• Wireless technology is adopted for ease of deployment.• But, what will be the security implication, is sufficient Internet bandwidth available,

is instructional model is being affected, should mobility be supported?• Should the institute support mobility and if so, does it need custom application?

• One of the fastest changing aspect of the industry.• Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model is now being adopted.• Proper cloud computing framework can make institute more agile in

delivering newer service faster yet keeping upfront cost low.• Initiatives such as Internet2 provides an opportunity for institutions to

collaborate for developing fair legal and business contracts, share experience.• Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) model is easier to deploy while Infrastructure-as-

a-Service (IaaS) model may require more planning and integration.• Stable policy is needed to ensure data security, data location, who has access

and to what, recovery point objectives and recovery time objective in the event of disaster.

• These diverse issues are not independent.• Emphasizes interaction among institutional policies, transformation towards

IT and external forces.• Clearly external forces influence institutional priorities but are reshaping

higher education IT.• A more direct connection between external forces and university IT is the

matter of openness versus security, adoption of cloud technology.• A key requirement is therefore is the ability to aggregate, de-aggregate and

re-aggregate resources, services and applications of every component of research and education.

• A well developed network architecture is expected to meet this requirement.
