Installing CX Supplements 3 Impromptu

IMPROMPTU

Overview

Introduction

This section contains the following information:• Overview• Terms• Considerations

Impromptu is a client-server reporting tool for administrators and end-users. Impromptu is used toextract data from the database and format it into usable reports for all departments. Impromptureports end with an .imr file extension.

Impromptu Terms You Need To Know

You need to know the following Impromptu terms:

AliasAn alternative label or name for a table. Create an alias to relate values in a single table bycreating a self-join between the table and its alias.

CatalogA file (with the extension .cat) that contains all the information necessary for Impromptu toaccess and retrieve information from a relational database. A catalog does not store data, but it does provide Impromptu with a business view of the data. A catalog also containsinformation about which database to access, where the database is stored, and how thetables in the catalog are joined.

Crosstab reportsA type of report showing summary information from a list report in a compact table of rowsand columns. A crosstab report shows the value for the combination of each row andcolumn, enabling you to gain a different perspective on the data and see more without theneed to scroll.

Drill throughAn action that enables Impromptu to open another detailed Impromptu report on a simplemouse click. You can set up a drill through for any cell in Impromptu.

FilterA set of criteria used to retrieve a specific subset of records for your report. You can use afilter in reports to filter out unnecessary data and highlight the most important information inyour report.

HotFileA separate local data table that can be added to your catalog or used in a report as if it werea regular database table. Once you create a HotFile, any report or catalog can use it. Youcan use a HotFile to link to any database. For example, you can use HotFiles to comparethis month’s data with last month’s data.

JoinA term defining the relational links between tables in the physical database. Joins relate thedata in one table to the data in another table in the same database, enabling you to retrievedata from more than one table at a time.

Impromptu 4 Installing CX Supplements

KeysImpromptu keys consist of one or more columns in the tables and are often used to jointables. Impromptu keys do not have to correspond to database keys.

Outer joinA type of join that retrieves rows from one table even if the rows in another table do notmatch. You can use the following kinds of outer joins:

• A left outer join includes all rows from Table A, matched or not, plus the matchingvalues from Table B.

• A right outer join includes all rows from Table B, matched or not, plus the matchingvalues from Table A.

• A full outer join includes all rows from both tables, merged where matches were found.

PromptA dialog box that requests the user to enter information when a report is opened. A reportcan contain several prompts, which it uses to filter so you get only the data you want.Prompts can require the user to type in information, or select items from a picklist. A picklistcan include data items from the catalog, data items from another report, or data from a file indelimited ASCII format.

SnapshotA permanent local copy of the report and the data retrieved by a report. The data on yourpersonal computer can be shown and manipulated at a later date without having to connectit to the original database.

Sub-reportA sub-report is a sub-query that usually is associated with a main query. You can includeseveral sub-reports in one report. With sub-reports, you can deliver information in one reportthat would otherwise be available only with two or more reports.

Considerations

The following considerations apply to Impromptu:• Impromptu is the first step to retrieving information from the database. An Impromptu report

can be exported into Transformer, which allows for generation of models and cubes.• Impromptu can store information in a snapshot, which does not require an active

connection to the database.• Impromptu catalogs and reports should be stored on a backed up network file server.• For more information about Impromptu and its capabilities, use the Discovering impromptu

link on the Cognos client-server CD.

ExplorerA program in the PowerPlay package. The Explorer program uses cubes created withPowerPlay Transformer to explore the data in multiple dimensions. The program organizesthe data in rows, columns, and layers. As you drill-down in the Explorer, you are presentedwith each new layer of data available.

ModelThe file created in PowerPlay Transformer defining how a cube will be created to bestdisplay and analyze the data in Explorer. The computer center or Information Systems (IS)department likely will maintain this file. The dimensions that the users see in PowerPlayExplorer or Reporter are specified within the model. This file defines the drill-down levelsand the fields to be used as measurements from the data file. The information for a model isstored in a file with an extension .PYH (binary) or .MDL (ASCII).

PowerPlayThe entire Cognos PowerPlay product including Transformer, Explorer, and Reporter.

ReporterA program in the PowerPlay package that enables you to build powerful reports in a varietyof formats using the cubes created in Transformer. In Reporter, you can show categoriesfrom more than one dimension and more than one level of categories in rows, columns, orlayers. In Reporter, as you drill-down, you are presented with the next layer of data availableand the previous layer.

TransformerOne of the programs of the PowerPlay package. This program defines the model in terms ofdimensions and measures. This program creates the model (.PYH and .MDL files) andgenerates the cube (.MDC file).

PowerPlay 6 Installing CX Supplements

Considerations

The following considerations apply to PowerPlay:• PowerPlay is an excellent tool for forecasting trends at an institution if the cubes are kept

refreshed• To allow for less administration of cubes, Cognos Scheduler is an excellent utility that

updates cubes

Transformer Terms You Need to Know

You need to know the following Transformer terms:

Model Definition Language (MDL) FileA file that represents a model and is stored in plain text format using Transformer’s ModelDefinition Language. MDL files can be opened in Transformer or in any text editor.

Multidimensional Cube File (.MDC)The Cognos file that the PowerCube designer creates in PowerPlay Transformer, and thatcontains multidimensional data. It also can be a pointer file that connects to a database cubeor a third-party On Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) source.

Transformer ModelA multidimensional model of a business or enterprise created in PowerPlay Transformer thatdescribes the structures and specifications for one or more cubes. The information for amodel is stored in a model file, with the extension .PY? (binary) or .MDL (ASII). The questionmark (?) in the extension is replaced by the character used in your release of Transformer.

Considerations

The following considerations apply to Transformer:• Planning is essential and the key to successful PowerPlay cubes. Several minutes of

planning the model structure can save hours when model creation begins.• Jenzabar, Inc. recommends you save all of your model files as the MDL type for the

following reasons:− It is recognized as an industry standard− Cognos always will support the MDL standard between releases

• Remember to implement security into the actual model or else by default any cube that isposted to the Web will allow users to have full access to the cube. You will need a networkconnection to your directory server so you can import the user classes.

• Transformer models should be stored on a backed up network file server.

Overview

Introduction to PowerPlay Enterprise Server

This section contains the following information:• Overview• Terms• Considerations

PowerPlay Enterprise Server is an Internet or Intranet server that enables Web users to viewPowerPlay multidimensional cubes.

Access Manager Terms You Need to Know

You need to know the following Access Manager terms:

Access Manager ServerAn LDAP-compliant server containing information about users, user classes, and theirassociated access privileges.

Access ManagerA tool used by administrators to set up users and user classes, and to grant access toprotected data sources.

Base Distinguished Name (DN)The higher levels and directory names of the path (including the root) that you specify toaccess the hierarchical information in a namespace. For example, the root level C (Country)in the directory CA (Canada) together with the organizational level (O = Cognos) forms theDN for the following distinguished name: CN = Cognos Documentation, O = Cognos, C =CA.

Basic SignonA sign on (user ID and password) that you create and maintain in Access Manager and thatCognos applications use to identify individual users. Compare to operating system (OS) signon.

Cognos Security Administration File (.CSA)Access Manager uses a .CSA file to store connection information. It maintains authenticationfile, directory server, and .LAE file connection information, the directory server currentlyconfigured to be active, and the expansion state of the nodes on the directory tree. TheAccess Manager Configuration wizard can use a .CSA file to set automatically runtimeconfiguration information.

Directory ServerA specialized database that stores user attributes, object classes, and other schema-typeinformation in a hierarchical format. Access Manager uses this to store and manage userand user class data.

LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)A product-independent protocol used to locate organizations, individuals, files, and otherresources on the Internet or a corporate Intranet. This protocol is designed to extractinformation from a hierarchical directory. This gives users a single tool to find a particularpiece of information, such as a username, e-mail address, security certificate, or othercontact information.

PowerPlay Enterprise Server 14 Installing CX Supplements

NamespaceA source of authentication data used by Access Manager that exists as a directory on adirectory server, or as an entry in a local authentication export (.LAE) file, depending on thedefault security server configured in the system registry.

The security data stored in each namespace, such as sign on information for users, userclasses, application servers, and data sources distinguishes each entry from all othernamespaces in the repository.

Netscape Directory ServerAn LDAP-compliant data store used by Access Manager to store authentication data.

NewsIndexThe list of entries in Upfront that a user can see and interact with. It includes NewsBoxes,NewsItems, NewsBox shortcuts, and NewsItem shortcuts.

NewsItemAn entry in the NewsIndex that represents a report, query, or Uniform Resource Locator(URL) in Upfront.

PowerPlay Enterprise ServerAn Internet or Intranet server that enables Web users to view PowerPlay multidimensionalcubes.

Public User ClassThe user class to which all users in a namespace automatically belong. This user class iscarried forward into other Cognos products. You do not have to name the public user class“public”. You can associate users with other user classes, but they always remain membersof the public user class. You can assign properties and access to the public user class, asyou would for any other user class. By default, a namespace does not have a public userclass associated with it.

Root User ClassThe user class with access to all data sources authenticated using a specific namespace. The root administrator is a member of the root user class. The root user class is created bydefault and can be renamed but not removed from the namespace.

Upfront ServerA server application that operates on an NT server to produce and deliver reports andqueries from other Cognos products to users of Web browsers.

Upfront Server AdministrationAn Upfront component that enables the administrator to view and configure all Upfrontservers in the system.

Installing CX Supplements 15 PowerPlay Enterprise Server

User ClassA category of users who are assigned the same data access privileges, usually becausethey perform similar functions in an organization. User classes can contain other userclasses, and users can belong to several user classes. User classes are related to eachother in a tree structure where each class inherits the capabilities (and restrictions) of itsparent and can further restrict, but not relax, any restrictions.

Your security administrator defines user classes in Access Manager Administration.

In Transformer, objects in a hierarchy representing a group of users who typically performsimilar functions in an organization. You can restrict access to cubes or portions of cubes formembers of particular user classes by creating custom user class views.

Considerations

No considerations apply to PowerPlay Enterprise Server:

file. Check the Trusted OS option and uncheck the Basic Sign on option. The user IDformat to be entered in the Trusted OS section should be <Domain Name>\<userid>.Map the user to a class that will be accessing the reports.

Note: Between the domain name and username is a “\” and not a “/” as shown onpage 64 of the IWR Report Administrator’s Guide.

If the user who signed on to the network meets the criteria of items 2 and 3, once thepreceding three items are implemented, the IWR logon page will be bypassed.

Why are all users able to access remote cubes with a browser, even though security onthe server has been set in Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) by turning offanonymous access and setting basic authentication?

Basic security in IIS is done through a Network logon (Username, Password). Any user whois allowed access to this server or directory will be able to log on. Using Microsoft Explorer, users will be able to change names and move or rename files, including PowerPlay Cubes(MDC files). Access is allowed via the Access Control List (ACL) in Microsoft Security.

For Cubes to be made secure individually and accessible only by authorized users with apassword, you have to set up authentication on the cube itself, in Transformer, when thecube is built.
