Happy New Year 2015! As the sun has set on 2014, and we welcome 2015, are we ready to write our own destiny for the year? Are we ready to create history? Are we ready to try out something that we've never tried before? Are we ready to charter more clubs, get old members to renew and new members to join our Toastmasters family?

Destiny is a choice. What are you choosing?

Reet Arora, DTMDistrict Governor for 2014-15Toastmasters International District 41

Boom! It's another “NEW YEAR” mostly for making resolutions. Take a detour from the obvious, Pause, Discuss and Revise your plans. Spend time with stakeholders to understand what works in the current dynamic environment. Look beyond obvious barriers to provide value to the member.

Don't let 2015 be just another year. Make it a year of change, betterment and excellence.

I wish you Excellence in all your endeavors.

Cheers!Brillian SK, DTMLieutenant Governor Education & Training 2014-2015Toastmasters International District 41

May you all have a great year ahead & may all of you accomplish the purpose of your joining Toastmasters!Yes, I am talking about the educational titles! One speech a month is really easy, if you focus on that!Just decide that you will speak once a month & achieve the next title!

All the best!

Where Leaders are Made

Fellow Toastmasters, your District needs your help.

Each year Toastmasters International sets a few targets for us, and one main target is Membership Payment. We need to have 12000, whereas in the last 6 months we have only grown to 5000. Can we double this number in the next one month? The good news is, it's possible. If each one of us gets one more guest converted to member… we easily double our membership strength, even better if we can get more!

It's the season of giving, can we give a lifetime of memories, experiences and learning to someone? Can we now publicize Toastmasters, which has so far been our best kept secret? Can we reach one friend/family member and help them become Toastmasters?

Are you going to be one of the individuals who is going to contribute in making District 41 Distinguished/ President's Distinguished/ Number one in the world? Together we can make it happen. Are you with us?

Dec Issue Vol 6

Thank You TOASTMASTERS was a campaign initiated by the Lgms - Chandra Shekar, Sunil Nair, Lgets - Brillian SK, Neeraj Gupta and the District Governor of D41 Toastmasters International, Reet Arora where they urged Toastmasters across District 41 to create a loop of Thank you’s to express their gratitude towards the largest wagon of communication and Leadership in the world.

Toastmasters International has transformed countless individuals from competent communicators to laudable leaders over 90 decades. Moreover there are myriad reasons why people join Toastmasters. Probably this was one of the nicest way of building a close relationship with present members and urge them create more members.

The program started on 5th of Dec 2014 and concluded on 5th of Jan 2015. District 41 saw

Where Leaders are Made

members come forward and do their bit towards the Gratitude EXPRESS.

The program was built on three criteria’s:

1) Get an existing member achieve any educational goal2) Get a member (who was already a Toastmaster) reinstated3) Get one new member join Toastmasters

Leaders cajoled their club members to support this program either by projecting a Thank you TOASTMASTER smilie in their meetings on their walls in their boardrooms or by holding it across on printed posters in their hands. Techno freak Toastmasters held it across on their mobile phones and tablets. Members were also encouraged to take Selfies and toss it with a Toast. Various groups and club pages on Facebook dressed their covers with the thank You Smilie all across the month of December.

Selfie’s have taken the World by storm and so did our #SelfieWithToasties! Selfie’s were splurged all across the social media to create a boomerang effect. Later they were mailed to [email protected] with name, club and division details as submission for recognitions.

The District will now recognize members meeting all three criteria’s. Recognized members will make their way through the 1) D41 TI Newsletter e-publication recognizing the area and the division with maximum number of selfie’s and 2) the names and the selfies will also be listed on the D41 Website.

Here is a collation of Selfie’s submitted at the D41 TI Newsletter.

Thank you once again for being a sport.

Cheers!Poonam RathodD41 TI NewsletterEditorial Team

Where Leaders are Made

December 14, 2014 was a special day...Let me explain why if I may.

Between Mulund Toastmasters Club and Thane

Toastmasters Club was the joint...It was one of its kind, that was the point.

It was a meeting in a park...All we wanted was to make a mark.

Toastmasters and guests joined us that Sunday morning to talk about Tea & Coffee...Like a normal Toastmasters meeting we promised it wouldn't be.

It was sunny and it was hot..We warned everyone to bring their own hat just not to get caught.

It all started with a note with a flute...TM Bala who had us all with a hook.

morning to talk about Tea & Coffee...Like a normal Toastmasters meeting we promised it wouldn't be.

It was sunny and it was hot..We warned everyone to bring their own hat just not to get caught.

It all started with a note with a flute...TM Bala who had us all with a hook.

Then came TM Eknath as the TMOD...Who went on speaking about Tea & Coffee.

But the brilliant surprise was the presence of TM Arvind & Brillian...Accompanied by TM Nikhil, the District Evaluation Champion.

There were more and there were lot...But we will let the pictures convey the memory shots.

Time was on a jet ride for those who attended...We just coudn't get enough of what all happened. The meeting was graced by 45 folks...We had ordered Thane special snacks just to have everyone coaxed.

Those who missed it are now sad...We will continue to talk about what you've missed, just to make you mad.

Don't you worry though...We've got more things planned, we'll soon let you know!

by one and all. There were intriguing games too that were played on the boat including volleyball with balloons which as expected did end up jettisoning off the boat, along with Housie, in which songs were played and we had to strike off the names of the films written on the ticket given to us. It was really exciting to see the participation level and the friendly competitive spirit in one and all.

As the trip ended I earnestly wished it could have continued a bit more. It was a great experience and captured quite a few interesting shots. All in all a great experience which was worth it's while.

n a slightly windy day and with the chill in the air announcing the arrival of winters, did I go on the boat cruise organized by JCI*.

The scheduled departure time was 11 AM but inevitably got delayed and finally embarked the journey a little close to noon. It was a motley crowd comprising of the children the adults and the old. As promised it was a fun filled journey which embarked with a trip to Belur Math. To watch the likes of Howrah Station, the Howrah Bridge and Vidyasagar Bridge from an entirely new angle was a real high point of the entire trip. The lunch comprised of noodles and rice along with very spicy and titillating gravy. Along with the lunch the snacks added to a complete picnic feel. Towards the fag end of the day, when it really started getting cold, the tea which was served was a real blessing and lapped up

The picnicthat made us forget

Where Leaders are Made

By Ruddra Roy Chowdhury, TMKTC

inters are picnic seasons in Kolkata. Some people go to far away villages; some go to river banks, while the affluent go to resorts. But there is one thing common to all of them- the people, even though for a brief moment, forget themselves. They forget to wear their coats and shiny shoes. They also forget to wear their compound, mascara, and expensive cologne.

W

Wait, I take that back, they never forget. :PBut most importantly, they forget their mundane adult lives and become children.

We planned our TCS Maitree Kolkata Toastmasters Club's annual picnic at Abakash Resort- A beautiful green garden with a pond adjacent to it, whose tiny fishes jumped out of the water to gobble up the dough balls we threw. The paddle boat took many trips around the pond; we had it all to ourselves for the entire day. But the excitement began when Parantap and Ronak took out their equipment (Cricket Yay!!). That is when the epic war began.

Dec Issue Vol 6

18

Page 19: D41 newsletter december edition

We had people fighting for the ball. People threatening the umpire. People doing Kung Fu And People Criticizing the Pitch.

That was a very 'competitive' morning of cricket that my legs still remember. Who knew that we had so many great stroke players that would put Rahul Dravid to shame?

After which we were lucky to find that Parantap had a treat planned for us. Oh!! the joy of drinking beer on a cool winter afternoon, sitting on a chair that slightly reclines back, while the wind blows smoke from a freshly lit cigarettetowards the pond.

Sameer and I were the one who organized the picnic games. What made the games funnier was that I was too high to explain the rules (Omg!!). The teams were to blow balloons; instead, they ended up bursting more than they bowled. All we had to do was find the team that had the most balloons intact. Not an easy task as the count was changing even as we counted!

What picnic is good enough without some food and Dance? TM Sayantan made sure that none of us left the picnic without a full stomach, be it veg or non-veg. And then, TM Varun pumped up his car stereo and voila! We had an impromptu DJ to whose music everyone danced their heart out.

Thanks to all those who made the picnic a success- Manisha, Ronak, Arnab, Sameer, Suvayan, Sayantan, Sameer, and of course, I helped a bit.

uestion: What is the best PR?

Answer: A high quality and FUN meeting with many guests.

Result: Four new members and a number of HOT prospects.

This was a meeting presided over by our TM emoticon literally looking at the proceedings from the back wall. Toastmasters were encouraged to dress in green and red.It is the meeting where TM Akbar Khan had the meeting rolling in the aisle as he delivered project 5 of the humorous speech manual. A speech that earns him a well deserved ACS.

There were speeches on the environment and the must have resolution to segregate, a masterful use of speaking techniques to describe 6 months in toastmasters, and a tongue in cheek discourse on holistic healing.

The VP membership as the table topics master decided to only call on experienced and funny toastmasters. A major departure from the usual rule of calling on attendees who do not have an active role. This was a well executed plan to really IMPRESS the many guests and other TMs in attendance.

This offering of fabulous speeches and highly entertaining and superb impromptu speaking resulted in a high conversion of guests to members.

But this was not all.

The meeting saw the latest DTM, Adolf Castellino being roasted and toasted.. the D in DTM variously described as Degenerate TM, Diabolical TM, Deranged TM, Delightful TM, Dummy TM, D TM everyone wants to emulate!!!! Our latest DTM was toasted with rum soaked mulled apple cider!!

The room was filled with the aroma of the spices and apple cider that was cooking in the corner. Fellowship was at its peak with snacks and drinks. A fabulous red cake was cut and consumed

The piece de resistance was TM Poonam Rathod as Santa clause. We had a secret Santa. Members and TM guests were encouraged to bring anonymous gifts. The Excom pitched in with additional gifts to cover any shortfall, and to give something to the guests in attendance.

A thoroughly enjoyable and high quality meeting.

here are meetings and then there are MEGA MEETINGS. A meeting conceptualized almost a month ago to be the “Year end” meeting of ICG TM Club turned out to be perfect in all aspects. Leading from the front was our most experienced Toastmaster DTM Farida D'silva Dias who donned the role of the Toastmaster of the day. She walked, no ran the extra mile to ensure that the atmosphere reflected the chosen theme “A Christmas to Remember”.

The room was decorated with Christmas tree and other goodies. What better theme to choose when you are in Goa during the most loved Christmas season. A season to share,

care and make merry…..

We had in attendance a young band playing Christmas Carols with the full set up of Drums, guitar and Piano. Our senior member, DTM Adoph Castellino was honored by the club for being conferred the title of DTM.

The agenda was jam packed with scintillating speeches ranging from an Ice breaker from our youngest Toastmaster Shalaka Mainkar to a master class on story telling by Noella Fernandes. Table Topics was entertaining with everyone in the room getting to participate in the introductory round robin and the session

went on for more than half an hour with diverse topics that gave the participants and the spectators equal fun.Lowell, the Table topics master had preselected most of his “victims” and they gladly took the challenge.

It would be cruel not to mention the snack break aka “the most interesting part of the meeting” where five snack masters together ensured that everyone had their fill and garner enough strength to withstand the hefty evaluation session that followed. The General Evaluator, our Area Governor Umesh Padmanabha was much impressed with the proceedings of the

day and congratulated the club on the great show being put forth by the role players and the speakers. Even Santa Claus who made a stopover was so ecstatic that he made sure nobodyleft without a gift.

Renita Alvares, the club president and the protagonist of this meeting thanked all the Toastmasters and guests who made this truly “A Christmas to Remember”.

Dazzling, Dynamic and Diverse-that is how I define Resonance 2014-the 3D conference at Delhi. Celebrations began at the classic and aesthetic "Crowne Plaza" from 21st November,2014 when Toastmasters from District 41 gathered to witness one of the most awaited events of the year i.e. Semiannual Conference of District 41.Toastmasters were greeted warmly by District Governor DTM Reet Arora. The well-organizedInaugural event had keynote sessions by eminent speakers like DTM Deepak Menon and World Champion of Public Speaking DTM Lance Miller. Delhi also had in store high octane entertainment in the form Bhangra and other cultural programs.

The evening of 21st November, 2014 set tone

for entire conference and left TMs curious of what was there in store for us. Second and Third Day of Resonance was a day full of learning when prolific speakers spilled beans about nuances of public speaking in their educational sessions by WCPS DTM Lance Miller, International Director DTM Deepak Menon,DTM RajdeepManvani and DTM Aditya Maheswaran. These sessions were enriching and knowledgeable indeed.

Day 2 and Day 3 of Resonance also had fantastic finals of Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests. We felt so lucky to hear some of the best speakers and evaluators for two days. They gave us belly laugh with insightful evaluations on the speech. The biggest fun part of the conference was Party Night where all the TMs danced to the tunes of Punjabi songs and were drenched in the colors of Delhi. A renowned singer Vikie Singh entertained us through his foot tapping Punjabi numbers. Icing on the cake was mouth-watering delicacies of Delhi. Yes, the food served at the conference had the taste of typical Delhiite cuisines. Be it Paneerki Sabji,Chicken, Dal Makhni or desserts like

Jalebi, Gulab Jamun, Rabdi etc. everything had an essence of Delhi in it. Everyone enjoyed it to their heart's delight.

Last but not the least what made everyone happy were awards that were given to various clubs for excellent performance in the TMI year 2013-2014.I felt extremely happy that my club received 6 awards at Resonance 2014.Conferences like Resonance bring together people from different walks of life at one location. We meet, greet and learn something from each other. In nutshell, we take a little bit of each other wherever we go. Conference ended but memories of this conference are etched in the mind of attendees for time to come.

Toastmasters at their best, and the Toastmaster's infrastructure to the rescue AND saving lives

In the last 30 days we have had 2 medical emergencies in Goa.The patients needed rare blood A- and O-This was posted on the Goa Toastmasters whatsapp group.

Within minutes TM Pritam (ICG Toastmasters) and TM Vinay (Mapusa Toastmasters) responded.Lives were saved.

Now talk about a dedicated Toastmaster. TM Vinay convinced the attending doctor to attend a meeting and join Toastmasters while his blood was being sucked out.

“Opening the door to World of opportunities”2010-11 : When I was in Chennai, my roommate was a Toastmaster (TM). He had invited me to the meetings couple of times during his speech at Siruseri. I was just a guest then and my knowledge about toastmasters was bare minimum.

"My first step"2011-12 : When I moved to Hyderabad, after witnessing club, area & division conferences, I made my choice of becoming a member. Thus I started my TM Career with TCS Maitree Synergy Park Toastmasters and equally been a friendly part of TCS Maitree Deccan Park TM Club too.

“Dare to choose, there is nothing to lose"2012-13 : Just when my TM Journey had gotten a rhythm in Hyderabad, I relocated to Bangalore and this gave me a discontinuity. But, soon I watched out for the club at Bangalore and joined. I took a step ahead this time and chose to be a part of Ex-com (Executive committe) and my involvement with TM started expanding.

"Too close, yet so far"2013-14 : Yet again, when things were set & fine tuned at Bangalore, I relocated to Pune and yet again I had to face another discontinuity

Where Leaders are Made

A Twist & Toastof my ToastmastersJourney“

By Deepak YN

and break. Unfortunate to me, when I moved to TCS Pune, there was no TM club at my office but equally fortunate was I to get connected with a couple of interested associates who were in the verge of forming a club. It still took months of time but finally there was a new club chartered at TCS Pune Sahyadri Park. Although I had very closely volunteered with TCS Pune club for most of the activities, I had to relocate again out of Pune just a couple of months before it got officially chartered. However, I still rejoice the time spent with the club, the members & the few meetings, still feel being an integral part of it.

"Think before you give up - all it needs is 1 degree more"2014-ongoing : Now I don't know what you call it as - a play of destiny or choice, I again left Pune and moved to Chennai this year (the place where I started). I was amused by the amassed TCS TM Clubs here (there are 7). I happened to be out of Toastmasters for really long time (almost an year) due

31

Page 32: D41 newsletter december edition

Dec Issue Vol 6

to work commitments, until I realized I didn't want to give up. All that was needed to make a come back was one degree more investment of time in addition to my project responsibilities & there you go - I joined TM again last month & became a proud member.

"New Year New Journey"2015 : We had club elections yesterday and it has been exactly 30 days since my membership with this club and the club's support to me is a bliss. This trust has bestowed me a position in the Ex-com for the next term [ Jan 2015 - June 2015].

By now, I have realized that, no matter what your work profile can be, no matter where you are, what is important is to follow your dreams. If you chase your dreams, then no one can stop you in your journey.

"TCS India TM Group - A Cross Connect"Having been acquainted with various TCS TM Clubs [Chn, Hyd, Blr, Pune, Mumbai], I thought of having a connect with all these clubs at the same time. Hence we even started a group with all these clubs together. This group is now running since a year & also now have members from Gurgoan, Gandhinagar & Kolkata. Daily chats and discussions happen and updates are shared in this group. An event being happening in TCS Chennai club is even known by Delhi club & vice versa.

"Take your time & Run at your pace"Although I have made a bare minimum progress in terms of my speech projects, I feel I have grown/benefited immensely here experiencing various roles of toastmasters including Emceeing for few events, taking part in PR Campaigns, as a creative designer for posters-certificates & prizes, as a blogger & newsletter editor, as a photographer covering many key events, as an admin for few sites, FB & Whatsapp groups, as a PR, attending training programmes [OTP & JTP], volunteering in club, area, division & district conferences [Orations at Hyd 2013 & Goa 2014 for D41, Reverberation at IISc. Blr 2013 & Reverberations at Chennai

2014 for D82], getting to experience the vivid spectrum of toastmasters. Rather criticizing the hiccups that break my CC journey, due to relocations, I embrace it as it has given gifted me with a new learning altogether different dimensions.

"TM as a journey not a destination"Something that keeps me hooked to toastmasters is the door of opportunities it provides for one to excel in any chosen field. There is no limit to creativity that you can exhibit, be it any talent that you have - you can excel through Toastmasters and expand the horizon by helping others achieve their dreams. Looking upto leaders who are in this path, cannot make anyone resist from joining this magical world. Hence I still believe there is so-much-so-much left and so-much-so-much to learn and likely so, TM is not a destination but a journey. Once you dive deep into this, you shall realize that this journey never stops but the learning never ends. “If you get out of Toastmasters all there is to get out of Toastmasters, you'll never get out of Toastmasters” – DTM Helen Blanchard

"Summing up TM in a word /sentence"To say it in a word, Toastmasters is where "Time Matters".

To say it in a sentence, this platform is a role model for "Servant Leadership" & making a choice to join this is a wise investment of time. Thank you Toastmasters & Gratitude to all mentors _/\_Deepak YN
