MAD HATTERS MORNING TEA A GREAT SUCCESSThe Mad Hatters Biggest Morning Tea Party at Jimbour House saw nearly 300 people raise their cups in the fight against cancer.

Thanks to community support, the morning tea was enjoyable (despite the early wintry blast) and financially successful, raising over $9 000. Dalby has once again demonstrated its wonderful support for the work done by the Queensland Cancer Council.

The local branch extends sincere thanks to the many people, businesses and stallholders for their individual and valued contributions. Worthy of note were our “sound” man, Darren Grey, and the entertainers who donated their time for the cause.

A special mention goes to artist, Robyn Buckley, whose painting raised more than $1 000 when raffled. Congratulations to the lucky winner, Mr Neville Skerman.

The Mad Hatters Challenge revealed a small band of creative folk in wacky and wondrous

hats who added to the festivities of the day. Congratulations

to Bernadette M o r r o w ,

B a r b

Handley and Marilyn Rollings whose creations blitzed the adult section – only narrowly of course - and Lisa Harber and Tegan Winner who won the children’s section.

What will you wear in the 2015 Mad Hatters Challenge?

In her Champions Speech, Jo Capp of the Queensland Cancer Council stressed the importance of prevention. “Roughly 2600 cancer deaths in Queensland each year could be prevented through healthy eating and lifestyle.” Jo suggested that we all join the QUEST to reduce our risk of cancer.

Q – Quit SmokingU – Understand your body and get checkedE - Eat healthily and drink less alcoholS – Stay Sun Smart every dayT – Take time to be active.

Thank you again for Raising Your Cups and PLEASE join the QUEST to beat cancer.

Blaxland Station Stations sprang up all over the Darling Downs as settlement spread westward. Many names of the stations still exist around Dalby but of course as a much smaller holding than was originally selected. The Closer Land Settlement Act was responsible for reducing many of the larger stations.

One such Station that retained its name was Blaxland, but of course it was never as large as St Ruth, Jimbour, Greenbank, or Loudoun. Most people relate to Blaxland as where the Boiling Down Works operated, owned by a Mr. E. J Blaxland. It was established in 1868 at what was then known as ‘Three Mile Scrub’ near Dalby. (Boiling down was a process used to produce tallow from aged, slaughtered and skinned sheep.)

Mr. Edward J Blaxland supervised the selection of timber from the surrounding scrub on the property which was required to build the shed for the Boiling Down process. He had a black cow pulling a light buggy from where he supervised the selection of timber to be felled for the building of the shed. The interior of the roof was tied and cross tied with perfect round forest timber and this was covered with British Gospel Oak iron that had been imported from England. A spur from the main line was built to the shed to enable the produce to be railed from the door of the shed. The railway reached Dalby in the same year as the Works started at Blaxland, so no doubt that negotiation was made with the contractor building the line.

This shed was to change its purpose after a few years and in 1873 when the works was closed down, because of the death of E J Blaxland; Mr. Owen McCarthy started a contract blade shearing business and he continued this until 1887. Mr. Jesse Hunt was the next owner and

he operated a twenty stand shed for contract shearing, advertising that rail was to the door of the wool room. Mr. Hunt was still advertising his business in 1893. Mr Jesse Hunt died in 1896 and the next owner, we understand, was Mr. John Nicholson. In the Dalby Herald report in 1914, “Mr. Nicholson had replaced the huge and clumsy steam engine, with its inseparable heat, smoke, dirt and noise with a 9 h.p. Hornsby oil engine. The Hornsby changed the atmosphere of the shed to a busy purr and hum of machinery driven evenly, swiftly, continuously and almost silently’”. There were twelve stands of Wolsley shearing machines installed as well. The contract shearing enterprise was continued under Mr. Nicholson. The yard had a commodious roof space and was sufficient to accommodate enough sheep for a day and a half to two days shearing. The shearing team was also well looked after and in 1914, new comfortable dormitories, kitchen, pantry, dining hall and a washhouse was built.

Mr. Nicholson not only ran the contract shearing shed but wanted to improve his flock as well as

others in the district by buying sheep from outer stations. On one such occasion, in July, 1899, Mr. Nicholson and Mr. E M McLennan, the bosses, left Dalby by train with a droving team of twenty-two men to bring 20,000whethers purchased by Mr. Nicholson from Marathon station on the Flinders to Dalby. He had purchased 7,000 for himself and the remaining 13,000 for the syndicate (a group of smaller graziers). Originally, it was intended to drive the sheep in two separate flocks. A sheep ‘smash’ (loss of sheep from eating ‘desert poison’) of 1500 happened one night and this weed troubled them on the stock route until the Stations enroute allowed them access to their pasture. Arriving in Dalby, a couple of days before Christmas, the team were 3,500 sheep short but apart from the ‘smash’ it was a record trip and by all accounts a profitable one. Mr. John Nicholson at 72 was fatally injured in 1935 and so Blaxland Station was awaiting a new owner.

A NOTE FROM THE EDITORThe office is feeling chilly in the mornings now, and many coffees are being consumed to warm up the girls left in the office – Kate, Karel and Amy. Jess has now left us for her maternity leave, and should have had her third child by the time you recieve your magazine. We are waiting patiently to meet the newest member of our Western Downs Magazines family and can’t wait until Jess is back (even though she’s only been gone for a week).

In the meantime, an exciting development for the Dalby Harvest is that from July it will be based in Dalby! The Harvest will be moving into a new office in the Chamber of Commerce Building, and will be open Monday to Wednesdays from 9–4, and Thursday/Friday by appointment.

In this magazine, don’t forget to check out the competitions that are running this month: Merivale Cakes & Training have a $400 wedding cake voucher on offer (page 16); Empire Theatre are offering 2 tickets to the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase (page 17); and next month, we have a Western Downs Beautiful Babies Competition (page 18). Antarctic Fly-Cruise Trip In August of 2012 on The Luminous Landscape website, a notice was posted for expressions of interest in a photographic expedition to Antarctica in January 2014.

I fortunately responded immediately as the expedition sold out within three weeks.

The expedition started in Santiago Chile where I met up with Michael Reichmann and the other three Luminous Landscape photographic instructors as well as the other 53 participants who represented many countries and many different professions.

We then flew as a group to Punta Arenas at the southern end of Chile and from there flew to the Frei Research Station on King George Island in the South Shetland Group, and then walked about one kilometre to the beach to be transferred to the Ocean Nova by zodiac.

Then began five glorious days living on a very comfortable ship with excellent food and drink (Chilean beer and wine are excellent) and up to four zodiac excursions a day.

The zodiac excursions included landing at penguin colonies, research stations, historical sites, abandoned whaling stations and cruising amongst stranded icebergs.

Our days started at 4.00am and finished around 10.30pm.

We were very fortunate to get five fine days in a row, the average is about two out of five. This did cut out a lot of the instructional and seminar time, which was planned for the days when the weather turned bad, but nobody minded.

Arriving home, I had the enviable task of working through over 4000 images (which is still a work

in process]). One of the German photographers took over 20,000 images!

I hope you enjoy the images I have included as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Photography, particularly printmaking has always been a major part of my life.

Until I moved to Toowoomba from Dalby in 2001 (I still have my chiropractic practices in Dalby and Oakey) I had my own darkroom and worked mainly in monochrome prints and colour slides.

Since moving to Toowoomba I have completely moved from film to digital image making, and despite some trepidation at first I now have no regrets. In fact I can now get better control over the final output of the print with the current digital process and the wonderful inks and beautiful papers now available.

Anzac Day in DalbyIn the early hours of Friday 25 April 2014, hundreds gathered for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service which was held at ANZAC Park on Patrick Street at 4.28am. At 9.30am hundreds more watched the Anzac Day parade down Cunningham Street followed by a Commemoration Service.

In the Dawn Service address the bravery of the ANZAC forces was highlighted with special mention made of the most highly decorated Royal Australian Navy (RAN) unit during World War 1, the little known Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train (RANBT).

The men of the Bridging Train were engineers and largely responsible for building and maintaining wharves and piers to enable supplies to be brought ashore. They were often under enemy fire but bravely went about their vital job. A small number of the Bridging Train were also the last Australians to leave the Gallipoli Peninsula, staying to the last to ensure that the evacuation infrastructure remained functional.

The address resonated with attendees at the Dawn Service, many of whom were young adults and children. Nick Bell attended the service with his wife Hannah and their eight month old son Jasper. The young couple reflected on their continuing attendance at the Dawn Service.

“There is a big sense of entitlement today. Getting out of bed in the early hours is a small way to show respect and recognise the sacrifices made so we can enjoy our privileged life. War is brutal and lessons should be learnt from the past. We hope Jasper never has to see conflict in war and will raise him to respect ANZAC Day and all it stands for.”

Another ANZAC Day attendee, Geoff Wrigley spoke of his family serving across the navy, army and airforce, himself serving for sixteen years. ANZAC Day gives his family time to come together and remember people like his uncle who died in the Sandakan Death March in Borneo during World War

Two. It is also a time for him to remember mates who died in the Vietnam War.

Lest we forget.

Anthony’s Celebrates 30 Years With Lorna

In June 1984, the Anthony family sold their 50 year old business at 100 Cunningham Street, Dalby to Lorna Laverty. Lorna retained the name of Anthony’s because even to this day in 2014, people remember the fabric they purchased for a special event in the 1950s and 60s. Around 1987, we introduced the new trend of patchwork and quilting. We started patchwork classes and began annual Quilt Shows in October displaying our talented students work. We run a variety of classes for the beginner to the experienced some involving visiting tutors.

We sell Janome and Pfaff sewing machines and overlockers which we have seen great changes in their technology in this time.

It is exciting to see the younger generation interested in learning to sew. We can cater for all sewers needs with our large range of dress and evening fabrics, habadashery, laces, ribbons, patterns, a great range of patchwork fabrics along with our friendly service.

To help celebrate this last 30 years, we are going to hold a MONTH LONG SALE for JUNE. Each week we will offer 30% off each purchase over $30 in the products allocated for that week. To find out what is on each week you can follow us on Facebook (Anthonys Fabrics), call, see our shop signage, or even better, pop in. There are four weeks, so four different shop areas go on the weekly sale then Monday 30th will be our surprise big day. We will release the upcoming weekly sale items on Fridays 30th May, 6th,13th, 21st and 27th June. We are also offering a $30 gift voucher with every sewing machine and overlocker sold during the month of June.

Anthony’s are famous for their wide range of beautiful fabrics and friendly patchwork and sewing classes and have contributed much to the community throughout their years in business. We have met many wonderful people and shared many lives during our journey at Anthony’s. We thank you for your loyalty.

Dalby Devils Diehard

The Devils under 7s played a curtain raiser to the Diehards vs Valleys A grade game on Saturday night in Dalby. The boys spent time in the sheds as the A graders got strapped and rubbed.

The Under 7s loved the opportunity to interact with the top grade and were welcomed with open arms. I've coached senior football for seven years with 4 as reserve grade coach and inning

one premiership in 2011.

I have been A grade coach for the last three years coaching the likes of Kirk Reynoldson, Mark Cantoni who played in last years world cup and Shaun and Barry Berrigan. This year my wife and have taken on the under 7s as it was a great opportunity for me to give a bit back to the Juniors whilst doing A grade with Kerry

Carmicheal. I’m really enjoying my time with the kids and seeing their smiling faces boosts me up everytime I’m with them.

A grade is travelling pretty well sitting in the top 5 and doing juniors keeps me pretty grounded. Love coaching both ends of footy and will do so as long as I can.

Dalby Meals on Wheels News

The Garage Sale & Bake Stall held on the 19th May was quite successful. Thank you to all those who donated goods and those who supported us on the day.

A recent survey indicated that 78% of clients prefer their meals to be delivered 3 days per week, as it frees them up on Tuesdays and Thursdays to do other things without the need to be home for a meal delivery.

At the last bi-monthly committee meeting the decision was made to change the time of our meetings. Meetings will now be held at 6pm, Second Thursday Feb, April, June, Oct & Dec, with the AGM is in August, date and time to be fixed. Meetings are held in the Red Cross Rooms at “Worthington House” 9 North St. Any interested persons are welcome.

Earlier this month, as a part of our monthly Business After Hours function members of the Dalby Chamber of Commerce had the pleasure of attending member business, Agrifoods Australia, owned by Rob and Megan Anderson.

Following a tour of the grading and packaging plant, we were treated to several curries utilising chick peas and mung beans processed by this business. What a wonderfully novel idea to showcase our locally grown produce.

Members were also introduced to Kristy Larsen, who was the recipient of this month’s Exceptional Service Award from Chamber Sponsor Ignite Business Consulting. Kristy is employed by Katrina Reed, owner of Katty Cakes another local business producing fine food in our town.

Business Capability Workshops Series III starts 2nd June 2014.

To date we have about 50 Business Capability Statements for Dalby’s first Business Capability Directory. Our goal is to have at least 200 businesses by September so please send yours in or look at ways in which we can help you complete one for your business.

Please contact Chamber for details.

These services provided by Dalby Chamber of Commerce & Industry are funded by the Australian Government

Why SHould the Bunya Mountains in Winter be on Your Bucket List? Its rainforest-clad peaks shelter the largest stand of ancient bunya pines in the world. The Bunya Mountains offer cool mountains, rainforests and waterfalls, unique range-top grasslands, panoramic views, colourful birdlife and enthralling stories of times long ago. The Bunya Mountains are a spectacular wilderness range forming an isolated section of the Great Dividing Range situated about 150km from the coast and lying almost centrally between Kingaroy and Dalby.

Sue Unwin, Managing Director of the Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre has lived and worked in the Bunya Mountains for more than 30 years she explains that winter at Bunya Mountains is just magic!

So what is it you love about winter in the Bunya Mountains?

Where do I start… the scenery, the wildlife, being immersed in nature, the bunya pines, the cold morning frost, seeing your breath condense in puffs when you talk, log fires and the delicious hot chocolate from Poppies On the Hill Cafe... there are so many things. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and our history is so interesting.

Aboriginal people historically used Bunya Mountains as a meeting place for the various

tribes scattered throughout Queensland and New South Wales. They feasted seasonally on the bunya nuts collected from the bunya pine trees (Araucaria bidwillii).

Early Europeans used bullock and horse teams to harvest the red cedar and other precious rainforest timbers. The chutes used to roll the logs down to the bottom of the mountain can still be seen today.

Why do you think people should put it on their winter holiday bucket list?

If people love nature and wildlife, if they love the mountains, bushwalking or just doing nothing at all with some friends, then Bunya Mountains is a must. Visiting the Bunya Mountains in winter is cold. Our temperatures range from zero to twenty degrees. We actually get snow approximately every 10 years. The chalets are cozy though, log fires and electric blankets. The winter scenery really is breathtaking, so much so it is hard to put into words.

What do you think is Bunya Mountains best kept secret for SE Qld locals?

Some of our regular visitors have been renting our holiday homes for 20 years or more. We always welcome first time Bunya visitors with open arms.

I see it every winter, new visitors are amazed at the beauty and blissful serenity of the mountain. It is good for us locals to revisit our mountain through the eyes of a first comer. Feedback like amazing, uplifting energy, stunning beauty, peace and tranquillity are very common comments.

Most people know of the Bunya Mountains bushwalks, but the cycling trails are amazing! If you are looking for a real fitness challenge try pitting your legs against the climbs of the Bunyas! There’s a good reason the Tour of Toowoomba’s mountain stage finishes at the top of the Bunya Mountains; it’s one of the most challenging climbs in the region.

Poppies on the Hill Café offers a hearty lunch which is soul satisfying on a chilly winter day. We have the largest range of accommodation options on the mountains and encourage everyone to look at our new website www.bunyamountains.com.au. Bunya Mountain is amazing and unique – especially in winter!! Come and visit us as soon as you can so you can experience Bunya magic first hand. I promise, your Bunya experience will stay with you forever.

Dalby Welcoming Community Committee hosts Meet and GreetOn Thursday, 8 May the Dalby Welcoming Community Committee hosted a sausage sizzle at Anderson Park to give people an opportunity to meet members and learn about the group’s purpose. Around thirty people attended providing a great opportunity for committee facilitator Beth Wood to outline achievements to date and plans in train.

The Committee was formed in 2008 as a response to the Dalby community changing with a diverse range of people moving into the area. A number of community consultations were held to identify what the community did well and what it needed to do better. Interestingly, it was not just about being welcoming, but there were a number of issues identified around the physical image and attractiveness of the community.

The Committee has as its goal the image and attractiveness of Dalby in the broadest sense of the term. It aims to be welcoming of all, including those people who have lived here a long time as well as those who move to the area. One of its goals is that when people move on to other contracts or areas that they will acknowledge that Dalby has been the best of the places they have lived, worked and played.

The Committee has a fluid structure and is made up of representatives of community groups (social, cultural and sporting), council representatives, Chamber of Commerce & Industry and individuals. Members contribute to the areas they feel passionate about and there are no office bearers as such.

In the six years that it has been running the Committee has had some major ‘wins’ for public amenity and remains visible and viable by hosting a number of events.

Public Amenity

• Obtained funding for and developed the

Myall Creek Master Plan.

• Obtained Council funding for plans for unique and welcoming entrances to Dalby

• Used the Myall Creek Master Plan to enter the Healthy Community Award at state level in 2010. From 200+ entrants the plan reached the finals and received $50,000. This money was used to install fitness stations along Myall Creek.

• Won the State Healthy Community Award of $750,000 to develop the city section of Myall Creek in the Myall Creek Master Plan in 2011. This work was completed in 2013.

Events

• Annual Say G’day day on 25th January where people are challenged to “Say G’day” to someone they don’t know.

• Annual Delicious & DeLIGHTful Festival which was selected by Council for an Australia Day Award for the best community event in 2010. Features a parade of over 400 lanterns, multicultural food stalls and attracts around 6000 spectators.

Ways you can be involved

• Volunteer at this year’s Delicious and DeLIGHTful Festival which will be held on Saturday, 23rd and Sunday, 24th August.

• Talk to the committee about how the Myall Creek Master Plan can be fully realized.

• Contribute new project ideas. For example, the committee is currently looking for a grant for the ANZAC Centenary (next year) and would love to hear of project ideas from people within the community.

Cake Decorating Classes – practice makes perfect! In 2009 when Mary Reid and Cheryl Stace opened Merivale Cakes and Crafts at Highfields, the super hype surrounding the current cake decorating revolution was just starting. In the 5 years since, they have been teaching their Sugarcraft range at their Highfields cake studio and have introduced over 50 different classes, presented up to 70 certificates each year and have taught over 200 students (with some travelling from as far as Emerald, Roma and Townsville).

Merivale’s training portfolio ranges from beginner, to intermediate, to advanced, with some custom-designed classes (to suit the individual skills needed) and user choice (where students can choose the mix of skills that they wish to advance). Delivery options include day, evening, week day and weekend classes and small class size which allows for maximum attention to students.

In August and November 2014, Merivale will run beginner classes in Chinchilla. With many western Queensland students travelling to Highfields for classes, Merivale has decided to run two trial workshops in Chinchilla to see if there is a market for further classes in rural communities.

However, Merivale do a lot more than create amazing cakes for clients and run a school. They are also very active in using their craft to support the community. On an annual basis, they run demonstrations for schools and community groups, creates cakes for charities, provide sponsorships for the Brisbane Ekka, Toowoomba and Goombungee Shows, and conduct community workshops at the annual Cobb & Co Museum Have-A-Go festival and the Highfields Cultural Centre. Recently, Mary negotiated an agreement with three rural shows to provide sponsors and judging until 2016.

Merivale conduct a range of business development classes and mentors a group of advanced students who are almost ready to open new business ventures of their own. To accelerate the skilling for these students Merivale organises workshops (in Highfields and Melbourne) with some Australian and world class Sugarcraft specialists and authors to teach at their Highfields studio.

The success of Merivale’s Sugarcraft classes can be measured by their students’ results from the regional and Royal shows and the international expo competitions and tours that they organise. During the 2014 Toowoomba and Goombungee shows, students achieved over 30 awards and at the UK 2012 and 2013 international cake decorating competitions students won a combined 9 awards. These are amazing results considering the competition pieces were transported safely half way across the globe and in light of the high standard of entries, against very experienced decorators.

These achievements are truly inspiring and they are from a local Highfields business who is passionate about passing on the art of cake decorating to all aspiring students.

Under 8s Week at DSSDalby State School kick started Under 8s Week celebrations with fun, games and activities for both their school and the wider community on Friday morning.

Children from Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 were joined by children from LIFT Playgroup and several local kindies and daycares.

The big decision for the children and their teachers, parents and carers was which activity to begin with. Their choices included a visit to check out the police car and fire engine, create a headband, design a mask, stipple paint a boomerang, listen to a story read by staff from the Western Downs Library, join in with the singing and dancing, play games with Sarah from the PCYC, have their face painted or make a kite – to name just a few of the activities.

The glowing feedback received from those who joined in the fun has consolidated the idea for Under 8s Week celebrations to be an annual feature of the Dalby State School calendar.

DCC Paper-Plane CompetitionDalby Christian College aim to instil in their students a sense of community, house spirit and responsibility. The College Inter-House Competition has been designed to support that vision and therefore, goes beyond the traditional sport focused events. One such event, the Inter-House Paper Plane Competition, was held on Thursday, 1st of May.

Students had the opportunity to earn points for their house teams in three ways: Participation, Distance Throw, and Creative Plane Creation. Students spent some time folding paper planes using whichever design they felt would fly the furthest in a distance throw. They also put enormous effort into designing, building and otherwise creating planes out of any material they wished for the creative plane category which was judged on creativity, effort, quality and expression of team spirit.

It was exciting to see this year’s results with the Creative Planes being the best on display since the competition’s inception 4 years ago. The winning creations in each year group all included impressive, original catch phrases in support of their house. Although not winning first place, judges made special mention of two entries: a cake baked in the shape of a plane and another plane made from a pear.

It was a close finish with Taylor clinching the lead from Carey at the last moment. Congratulations to all students involved.

Be smart with your financeWhen times are tough in small business, it makes it even more important to ensure you are managing debt the best way possible.

Time and time again we see businesses pick up a piece of equipment or a vehicle using their overdraft when they should have considered finance by lease or chattel mortgage (CM) instead.

Overdrafts are designed to help you manage fluctuations in cash flow, not to buy ‘stuff’. Even if you have available cash, it’s worth considering a CM as it can be more profitable to free up cash rather than have it tied up in equipment or vehicles.

You might think that you don’t want to go through the hassle of applying for a specific loan for the item, but you’d be surprised how smooth the process can be – especially if you use an experienced broker. In the long run, it is often worth the extra time to get the finance. A CM is similar to a house mortgage. The ownership of the equipment or vehicle is yours on purchase and a mortgage stays over the goods as security until

the loan is repaid in full.

A CM is usually a fixed interest loan paid off over a one to five year term. Using a CM can really assist with business profitability, especially while interest rates remain low. You can choose to make a lump sum payment (balloon), at the end of the loan term, which means your regular repayments will be reduced. CMs can also be useful for those who are cash accounting, as you can claim the GST component of any vehicles or equipment you purchase upfront.

Also - don’t just think of CMs for vehicles or factory equipment. Recently we arranged finance for a new air-conditioning system for an office building.

Most importantly, consult with your accountant before making any purchases so that you can fully assess the taxation and cash flow consequences and make sure you are making the choice that is right for your business.

ForkForce AustraliaForkForce Australia launched its new Enforcer rough terrain forklift range in mid 2013.

To date the rough terrain forklift has been a massive success in Australia as it has been developed specifically for the Australian market and to Australian standards.

According to Adrian Martin, Operations Director at ForkForce, “We had to double our original order and the factory has been working overtime to keep up delivery because there has been such a high demand ever since we introduced them to the market mid-2013.”

The launch of this range has been an Australia wide

success with particular interest from ForkForce’s Toowoomba branch.

The range currently includes 2.5 and 3.5 tonne lift capacity with lift heights from 3.3m to 6m.

ForkForce attributed the success of these units to being the most competitively priced rough terrain forklift in the market with great features like its compact design, high ground clearance, integral side shift, traction tyres and high quality Yanmar engines.

Martin went on to say, “The popularity has been so high that our own hire department is struggling to secure these units for our hire fleet because most

of these forklifts are selling even before they have arrived.”

Even more promising than the huge success these forklifts have seen in the Australian retail market has been the number of forklift dealers around Australia who have been quick to acquire these new rough terrain forklifts for their own rental fleets!

For more information or a quote on a new 2.5T and 3.5T Enforcer rough terrain forklift, please contact ForkForce on 1300 42 3675.

Cosmetic Elegance Clinic Turns 7!Seven years ago Dr Eddie Roos realised a long held dream. “I saw the synergy that could occur by combining a medical skin practice with a beauty salon: medical treatments with the best cosmetic outcome in mind. It was a new concept at the time but I truly believed patients would benefit from a more holistic approach to skin care. With a dream and a business plan, Cosmetic Elegance Clinic was born.”

Now, seven years later, the clinic has grown beyond

Dr Roos’ expectations. It is a comprehensive skin clinic, encompassing cosmetic and beauty treatments, a world class laser clinic and, with his special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, a well-respected skin cancer clinic too.

“But we couldn’t have got to where we are today without our dedicated staff,” said Dr Roos. “Together we aim to provide our clients with skin care that is uncompromising in its professionalism and quality, in a comfortable and personal environment.”

Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is serious about skin care, with a passion for their treatments and love for what they do. Practice manager Gil Campbell said, “We believe in an age of increasing technology that personalised service is imperative. Our clients’ needs come first, and we endeavour to answer any skin concerns and questions no matter how big or small.”

Stress – It can affect us allThe founder of World Organic, Megan Douglas, has been kind enough to provide me with the following information to help some of my readers cope and deal with stress. Stress affects many of our friends and family members and the effects it has on our overall well-being and physical health can be detrimental.

How To Manage Stress: It is important to remember that stress need not affect us in a negative way. It is created by our reaction to situations and not by the situation itself. If we can temper our reactions, if we can manage life’s roller-coaster with a degree of equanimity and perspective, then we can minimize the adverse consequences of stress.

Stress management tips that may help you:

• First and foremost, know what your stressor is! Too often, people accept that they are stressed without taking the time to properly think through exactly what it is that is making them stressed. Anything can cause you stress – your work, your relationships, your body image, even the poor performance of your favourite sports team. Learn to identify what is making you stressed. It’s a necessary first step in dealing with the problem.

• Try meditation. The benefits of meditation are vast. If you’ve got the time, have a look at our blog on meditation in the ‘Soul’ section of our website. The simple action of breathing in a meditative state will add oxygen to your system and will bring you a measure of focus and control.

• Moderate your consumption of alcohol and/or cigarettes. They’re crutches. They might dull the feeling of stress in the short term, but they do nothing to help the problem and have their own health-related costs.

• Live well. Get a good night’s rest (seven hours minimum), eat healthily, exercise, pamper yourself occasionally, make time for family and friends, get a pet (if you like animals!). All of these things have been shown to help mitigate against stress.

• Know your limits and be prepared to either say no or get help. It’s when we take on too much that we’re most likely to experience stress.

• Try hypnotism. Like meditation, hypnotism can be particularly useful in helping you manage the causes and symptoms of stress. Have a look at our ‘Mind’ blog to discover

the many benefits it can offer.

• Look after your skin. When you become stressed, the amount of blood and oxygen which is supplied to your skin lessens dramatically. As a result, your skin will often take on a grey pallor and become dry, flaky and prone to irritation. When this happens, it is as important to care for your skin as it is for your general physical and emotional self. Take the time to cleanse and moisturize, and even visit a masseur if you can. Hopefully, we don’t need to tell you that your skin

will repair itself much more quickly if you use natural, organic products rather than synthetic ones!

So, there you have it. It’s highly unlikely, unless you live in a cocoon, that you can avoid stress. However, if you opt for a thoughtful, balanced approach to life you can manage it and you can master it. In the end, that’s a much more desirable option than having it master you.

My Midwives Rural Outreach Darling DownsMy Midwives is a Midwifery Group Practice based in Toowoomba. We opened in December of 2010 as the first practice of its kind in Australia. We provide antenatal care and postnatal care in the community and labour and birth care at Toowoomba Hospital where we have admitting rights. All our midwives are able to order pathology and diagnostics and many are able to prescribe. We provide two main services – continuity of midwifery care where a woman sees the same midwife throughout the continuum from early pregnancy to six weeks after birth with the midwife on call for labour and birth care and a bulk billed services where a team of midwives provides the care.

The My Midwives Rural Outreach – Darling Downs project has been funded by Medicare Local. The program will provide antenatal and postnatal care in three areas – Millmerran, Inglewood and

Chinchilla in conjunction with medical care of the woman’s choice if required or desired. This care may be in a shared model with the woman’s GP, in a shared model with the woman’s birthing hospital or with a private obstetrician. The midwife can book women into their birthing hospital, provide comprehensive care and education, order and interpret pathology and radiology as required and conduct assessments of fetal wellbeing using a CTG as required. All documentation will be shared with the woman’s consent, with her GP and birthing hospital. If the woman desires, she may additionally access continuity of care from one of the midwives for birth care in Toowoomba Hospital.

My Midwives Rural Outreach – Darling Downs has the ability to enable access for all women through the option to bulk bill Health Care Card holders and to offer services for other women

with minimal out of pocket costs. Similarly to GP services, consultations are time based with the majority of consultations being from 40 minutes to one hour. Again, depending on the consultation, the woman may come to central clinics (one each in Millmerran, Inglewood and Chinchilla) which will be established during the project or may receive a home visit from the midwife (depending on their location). Women who require out of hours services may contact the My Midwives on call phone for additional care if appropriate. Women requesting continuity of midwifery care for birth will additionally have access to their own midwife out of hours.

For more information or an appointment please contact [email protected] or phone 07 4642 2977.

PROBIOTICSBenefits of taking a Probiotic with an AntibioticThere is a constant battle going on in our digestive system between “good” and “bad” bacteria. The use of certain medications may disrupt the balance and may cause uncomfortable digestive upsets. Probiotics are live microorganisms thought to be beneficial to the host organism. A probiotic can be used daily to contribute to the “good” bacteria in your digestive tract.

Why may a customer need to take a ProbioticIndividual’s taking antibiotic medication or possibly individuals with lifestyle factors such as poor diet, high alcohol intake and excessive stress which may cause uncomfortable digestive upsets.

Benefits of taking a Probiotic may help to• Defend against and reduce the frequency of diarrhoea caused by anti-

biotics or lifestyle• Support digestive health during the use of medications which may

disrupt gut bacteria membranes• Promote healthy gastrointestinal function• Top up beneficial bacteria in the digestive system• Benefit in times of occasional digestive upset• Support digestive system health and wellbeing

Up to 10% of an individual’s daily energy needs can be derived from the by products of the good bacteria in your gut.

Furthermore, probiotics can provide multiple benefits for your immune system and are generally regarded as safe and well tolerated but should be avoided in patients who are severely ill or immunocompromised.

Come in an speak to one of our friendly staff of Pharmacist at Dalby & District Friendly Society about taking a probiotic.

Health & Beauty

I keep seeing these ads on TV. What is my macular and why do I need to get it checked?

The macular is the central area of the retinal at the back of your eye responsible for high resolution or detailed sight. It is a highly organized structure and unfortunately easily prone to damage from accumulations of cellular debris and leaky new blood vessels. This is called Macular degeneration or MD. Further information can be found at: www.mdfoundation.com.au

While MD is a devastating problem for sufferers, it is also quite a problem for our society as well. A recent study called by commissioned by Novartis Pharma and conducted by Deloitte Access

economics (Eyes on the Future) estimated that the total societal cost of vision impairment and blindness from all forms of AMD in Australia was slightly more than $5 billion per year.

So do it for yourself or for Australia and get your macular checked.
