Danville Community College’s TRiO

Upward Bound Program…

Your future is Our Focus.!!

Where did the time go? It seems the Senior Class of 2010 was an incoming

Freshman class not so long ago. Now, these students are at their pro-

spective colleges preparing for the next phase of their education. The

program staff is extremely proud of their accomplishments; their time-

less efforts of planning, preparing, and remaining focused paid off. In the

words of a philosopher, ―Free the child‘s potential, you will transform him

into the World‖ (Maria Montessori, 1870-1952).

DCC‘s TRiO Upward Bound Program is proud to complete another suc-

cessful year with a 100% high school graduation rate and over 90% of its

graduating class successfully enrolling in postsecondary education. To the

rising senior class of 2011, I charge you with the challenge of facing adver-

sity and controversy with an open ear, open mind, and open heart. Chal-

lenges come and go; how you deal with them prepares you for the next

one.

Where We Are...DCC TRiO Upward Bound Program

served 55 students in the Danville/Pittsylvania

Co. High Schools for the 2009-2010 school year. Of the 55 participants, 19 were seniors who suc-

cessfully completed high school; 15 of the seniors

successfully enrolled in college for Fall 2010 (see

next page for details). Our present goal is to en-

sure academic support and guidance is imple-mented for another successful year. This program

offers high school students opportunities in edu-cation for college placement and enrollment. We

will continue to examine opportunities in educa-

tion that will meet the goals of program partici-pants.

New Beginnings...We are expected to serve

over 50 program participants this academic

year with 24 rising seniors planning their Fall 2011 college enrollment. This program‘s goal is to

ensure ALL ITS SENIORS SUCCESSFULLY COM-

PLETE HIGH SCHOOL AND ENROLL IN POST-

SECONDARY EDUCATION AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

GRADUATION. Our efforts will be timeless and

met with diligence, dedication, and support. We will continue to monitor participants‘ academic

performance in high school as well as provide

exposure and services in preparation of entering in postsecondary education. DCC TRiO Upward

Bound Program will continue meeting its goal of 100% high school graduates and strive to obtain

100% of postsecondary enrollment by Fall 2011 with the support of parents, target high schools,

Past (Looking Back), Present (Where We Are), & Future (New Beginnings)...

PAGE 2 DANVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S TRIO UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM

DCC TRiO Upward Bound Program sponsored program participant,

Brittany Hood, to traveled to Washington, DC, June 5th—10th, to

attend the 21st Annual National Student Leadership Con-

gress at American University. Brittany experienced various

leadership activities including developing a Mock Congress; Diver-

sity Training; Conflict Resolution Workshops; and various cultural and community projects.

Brittany experienced congressional visits to Members of the U.S. Congress at the State Capitol Building

and other activities such as tours of the Cultural and Historic Sites of Washington DC.

Brittany Hood is a rising senior at George Washington High School and has been

enrolled in DCC‘s TRiO Upward Bound

Program since Summer 2008. Brittany

serves as a Student Ambassador and plans to attend a 4-yr university in Virginia.

2010 Summer

Highlights!

―The trip was a wonderful experience for me. I rode a train for the first time in my life. I got to make friends from all over the United States. We spend a lot of time working in our Mock Congress groups, where we debated with students that were in a different group. The Mock Congress also helped me

to developing leadership skills, and participating in diversity training. My Mock Congress topic was Creation vs. Evolution. Our group came in 5th place out of 15 groups. I spoke to Auguste Humphries, the Legislative Correspondent of Virginia. I explain to him what Upward Bound was and what our purpose

in the program was. He also asks me questions. He told me he will love to come join us for a Saturday Session with us‖ (Brittany Hood, Sum ‗10).
