Chapel Talk: “Looking to the Earth for Wisdom: Updating a Theological Motif in a Time of Ecological Crisis.” Wednesday, March 6, 2 pm Meredith Chapel Dr. Frances Flannery, JMU Professor of Religion Several biblical passages identify God as the earth or rock or instruct us to observe something in the natural world as a source of wisdom. The obedience and natural functioning of parts of the ecological world serve as a contrast to humanity’s sinful ways and act as a model for humanity to realign its actions with the order that God has instilled. Thus, the world of non-human nature – including non-human animals, the sky, and the earth itself - all serve as a source of wisdom. This presentation will explore this motif and argue that this kind of close observation today reveals a profound ecological crisis that should also prompt humankind to recognize our collective “sin” and change our ways, in order to restore the balance that is part of the intended order of creation, the sum of its “tov” parts that God proclaimed to be “tov meod.”

Sunnyside Features

Eiland Center Library

Thank you, Sunny Treasures, for your support! Your allocation enables us to provide new large print books monthly and

will be especially useful as we look for new ways to expand our services to the greater Sunnyside

Community.

The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa is a life-affirming anthem to kindness and self-sacrifice that shows how the smallest things can provide the greatest joy. It’s a touching novel of a brave cat and his gentle, wise human that will resonate not only with animal lovers, but for those who enjoy quiet stories of friendship and travelogues.

Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff is a fascinating story of friendship and courage that focuses on three women and a ring of female secret agents during World War II. The novel shines a light on the incredible heroics of these brave women and tells the story of their courage, sisterhood and ability to survive in the harshest of circumstances.

Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts tells the story behind The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the book that inspired the iconic film, through the eyes of author L. Frank Baum’s intrepid wife, Maud. Written as fiction but based closely on the truth, it is a story of an unlikely friendship between Baum’s unsinkable widow and the young Judy Garland. Treat yourself to this wonderful story that pulls back the curtain on a fascinating relationship behind the making of a movie classic.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is a psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive. Beautifully written and well plotted, the suspense builds and captures you until the last shocking twist.

The Current by Tim Johnston is not your traditional thriller but a story that pulls you into the secrets of a small town and looks at the impact of a crime on the lives of innocent people. In the dead of winter, outside a small Minnesota town, state troopers pull a car from the icy river. It is no accident as a body is found downriver and another at the scene—half frozen but alive. News of the crime reminds the community and law enforcement of another young woman who lost her life in the same river ten years earlier.
