Celebrating Advent! Sunday, December 1—the First Sunday of Advent This is the start of the liturgical year, and a good time to make a special resolution that will bring you closer to Christ. Prayer for the blessing of an advent wreath: With hands joined, the leader says: Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: He is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, He is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, He is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord. All: Amen. Prayer for the lighting of the first candle: We light a candle today, a small dim light against a world that often seems forbidding and dark. But we light it because we are a people of hope, a people whose faith is marked by an expectation that we should always be ready for the coming of the Master. Advent wreaths are available in our parish gift shop.

December 2 through 7—the first week of Advent • Consider attending our Monday evening bible

study this week, or choose one day this week to attend a daily Mass.

• As we put together Christmas baskets here at St. Tim’s, we always need gifts for teens or the elderly—is there a gift or two you could donate that would brighten someone’s Christmas this year?

• As you decorate your home for the holidays, put a nativity scene or other reminder of Jesus’s birth (the reason for the season!) in a place of honor.

• Ready to turn on the Christmas music? Choose a playlist that includes O Holy Night, The First Noel, Away in a Manger, and other classics.

• Read Matthew 3:1-12 to prepare for next Sunday’s Mass.

Question of the Week Putting on the Light of Christ

Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. (Romans 13:12b) Adults: What will you do during Advent so that others can see that you have put on the light of Jesus Christ? Kids: What will you do during Advent so that others can see the light of Jesus in you? Weekday Mass and Adoration Chapel Weekday Mass (or a Service of the Word and Communion) is celebrated in our parish center chapel at 9:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, with rosary at 8:30 a.m. The chapel is available for quiet prayer during parish office hours. Our Faith In Action

Where do our food shelf contributions go? Each month we support our local food shelf with monetary and food contributions. As a parish we donate $1,500 each month to the Salvation Army food shelf located on 89th Avenue. We also average about 250 pounds of food per month from parishioner donations on the first weekend of each month. Additionally, during the summer months we donate fresh produce from our food shelf garden, which is on the southeast corner of the church property. This year we harvested and donated about 600 pounds of tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, beans, and rhubarb. The people visiting the food shelf really like the fresh produce! The food shelf garden is supported by about a dozen wonderful volunteers that plant, weed, water and harvest the produce. Mission Trips The middle school trip to Duluth, MN is from June 14 to 19, 2020. The high school trip to Benton Harbor, MI is from July 25 through August 1, 2020. Adult chaperones are needed for each trip at no cost. Student cost will be around $250 based upon fundraising efforts. Visit our website for the registration form, which is due December 9. So, why go on a youth mission trip? Mission trips invite students’ faith to their fingertips, allowing meaningful conversations about why service is essential to following Jesus. Mission trips invite students to be fulltime participants in God’s plan. Communities, too, are participants in that plan. Every community – the ones we visit and the ones we come from – have both strengths and struggles. By entering a different town or city, we get an inside view of another context where Jesus is at work. It changes perspectives, shapes passions and alters pursuits. It opens students’ eyes to the incredible possibilities God has put in front of them. Consider being a part of this process by going on St. Tim’s summer mission trip this summer!
