Principal’s Message

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

We recently held our Term 1 Recognition Assembly on December 9th. We recognized students in three areas of academic achievement and introduced a new award: Student of Character. The three areas of academic achievement include Effort Roll, Honour Roll and the Principal’s List.

Effort Roll: We have stressed to students throughout the year that a key to success is trying our best, getting used to trying our best, then simply keep trying our best when we become adults. So, we recognized our students who earned all G’s for effort – and emphasized this might be, in fact, the most important award students can strive for because teachers can recognize top effort whether the student is capable of A’s or C’s. Earning all G’s regardless of the letter grade should be the starting point for all our students and we challenged all of our students to earn Effort Roll in Term 2. There were 207 students who received certificates in their classroom and were asked to stand up during our assembly.

Honour Roll: Honour Roll is awarded to students who earned A’s (4.0) or B’s (3.0) and a 3.1 grade point average minimum in the five core subjects of English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and French. We challenged all our students to earn Honour Roll in Term 2 as well. Students received certificates in their classroom and were asked to stand up during our assembly. There were 192 students who earned this recognition.

Principal’s List: Students who achieved all A’s and all G’s for effort were placed on the Principal’s List and received a certificate and an ATMS USB car charger for their devices at the front when called up. We pointed out that high standards of effort often leads to high achievement and we celebrated those students who excelled in both Effort and Academics. There were 32 students who earned this recognition. In January, these students will be treated to a movie in the MPR and served drinks and popcorn / snacks from Mr. Gabriel and Mr. Cochrane. More information on that date will come out in January!

Student of Character: One of our school goals this year is to increase the character of our students. Teachers were asked to select one student in each class who exemplified one of the character traits that have been discussed this year in our classes, whether they are from our six main character traits: respect, responsibility, integrity, empathy, courage, service, or other character traits identified as important by a particular class. Teachers called these students up to the front and read out an explanation of why each student exemplified a particular character trait. Each Student of Character was gifted a set of ATMS headphones for use with their chromebooks. Great work Sabres!

The names of all our award recipients at our Term 1 Recognition Assembly can be found in this newsletter and on our website.

Parents, thank you for all your positive role modeling at home, pushing your children to meet their potential, and helping them have the opportunity to earn these awards and received the recognition and emerging confidence that comes from setting goals and achieving them. Thank You!!

Term 1 Recognition Awards

Congratulations to the students below who received Principals’ List, Honour Roll and Effort Roll and were recognized at ATMS’

Term 1 Recognition Assembly for all their dedication and hard work.

A Business of Our Own

The upstairs grade 7 pod has been learning about the business world with the Junior Achievement program. A local business man in the

Abbotsford community volunteered his time to teach our students about how to run a small retail business. As a culminating project, the

students worked in teams of five to design a business plan, manufacture products, advertise their business, and set up a sales booth, in an

attempt to turn a profit selling goods to ATMS students and staff. This project required the students to fully engage in the four Cs of learning:

Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity. The sales day will be held on Wednesday, December 14, and any profits

earned will be donated to BC Children’s Hospital. Mr. Abbott is very proud of the planning, creative thinking and hard work these grade 7s

have put into this project.

Grade 8 Boys’ Basketball

The grade 8 basketball season is well underway and the boys are off to a

good start. They recently took part in the Abbotsford Police City Basketball

Tournament in which they beat MEI, lost to a very strong Abby Middle team,

and lost to Reimer by 1 point in their very exciting final game. Ammetoje

Khangura, Gurminder Chattu, and Gurveer Sidhu earned player of the game

honours, but all the boys displayed hard work and determination throughout

the tournament. The season will continue into the new year, and we’re

looking forward to a strong showing in the grade 8 league.

Effort Roll List Effort Roll List Effort Roll List

Dr. David Murray, the Abbotsford Food Bank Director, recently visited the grade 7’s at ATMS. He taught students about giving their best in all aspects of life. Especially at this time of year it was a great refresher for students on being mindful of others and outward focused.

We are need of more items for our food bank. Our goal for the food bank is 2000 items and we are currently around 300.

Please drop off these items and others at the school in the bin provided. The Food Bank will pick up from the school on December 16th. Thank you for supporting the Abbotsford Food Bank.
