Grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ! With so many holiday events upon us, we are thankful to come together on this first Sunday of Advent at the Cathedral in order to pray, worship, and reflect on Christ, the true reason behind the holi-day season.

Welcome

“Am I not here, I, who am your Mother?” These are the words spoken by the virgin Mother to Juan Diego during her appear-ance to him in 1531 in Mexico. The words remind us of how God has called Mary to reveal to Juan Diego and the world His great desire to comfort and console His children. Our God and Father is here with us.

Words of comfort are presented through-out the season of Advent. God is reveal-ing His great care as a Father and a Mother (even through the image of Our Lady). It is a natural thing to turn to our parents when we need to be comforted.

When things are difficult, when life is heavy, when we have fears, we know it is our parents who provide care and protection. Advent, as well as the great Marian Feasts of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th and Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th, calls all of God’s children to remember how close, tender, and loving our God truly is. Sadly, not everyone has experienced comforting par-ents. Many people, young and old, long to know the caressing and gentle touch of a mother or father. Parents can even be the cause of great pain and fear in some people’s lives. God as Father tender-ly tries to heal our wounds as the one True Parent. He carefully watches, silently lifts up, and gently encourages His children to real-ize that they are created in His image. He can see His own features reflected in every one of His children. He does not scold, but rather longs to tell all His children, “I love you.”

The beauty of God is that God is also a child. God is a son. Not only parents are called to comfort, so are children. It is a natural thing to call upon your children when things are difficult and when life is heavy. Advent reminds us of how comforting God is as a Son (and daughter). Sadly, not everyone has experienced comforting children. Many people, young and old, long to know the caressing and gentle touch of a son or daughter. Children can even be the cause of great pain and fear in some people’s lives. God as Son tenderly tries to heal our wounds as the one true Child. He carefully watches, silently lifts up, and gently encourages all His parents to realize He is created in their image. He can see His own image re-flected in every one of His parents. He does not judge, but rather longs to tell each parent, “I love you”

God the Father and God the Son are with us in the Spirit. We are surrounded in the love of the Father and the love of the Son. I en-courage each one of us to take time this Advent to be embraced by the Spirit and know the peace that come from Comfort.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Last Sunday, December 10, the festivities for our Lady of Guadalupe began. The chapel dedicated in her honor was decorated with roses of many colors and bright lights. During the 1pm and 7pm Masses, a representation of her apparitions in México in 1531 was present-ed. Mariachis accompanied the Holy Mass and afterwards they en-tertained the faithful gathered downstairs in Mercy Hall. Pozole, Menudo and many other delicious Mexican appetizers were sold.

On Tuesday, December 12, the day of the miracle of the Tilma, many devout parishioners at 5 am sang the mañanitas, equivalent in

Spanish to the happy birthday song, and our pastor Father Michael O'Reilly sang Schubert's Ave Maria to Her. The Holy Mass was concele-brated by our pastor Emeritus Msgn. James Murphy and Father Kieran McMahon. The attendees were favored with hot chocolate and Mexican sweet bread. Thank you to all the people who do-nated their time, talent, and treasure to celebrate our Mother.

O” Antiphons The Roman Church has been singing the "O" Antiphons since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testa-ment to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah.

means “Rejoice.” The Introit for Gaudete Sunday, in both the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo, is taken from Philippians 4:4,5: "Gaudete in Domino semper" ("Rejoice in the Lord always"). Like Lent, Advent is a penitential season, so the priest normally wears purple vestments. But on Gaudete Sunday, having passed the midpoint of Advent, the Church lightens the mood a little, and the priest wears rose vestments. The change in color provides us with encouragement to continue our spiritual preparation—especially prayer and fasting—for Christmas. For this same reason of lighten-ing the mood, the third candle of the Advent wreath, first lit on Gaudete Sun-day, is traditionally rose-colored.

THE “POSADAS NAVIDEÑAS”

A beautiful tradition are the “Posadas” for Advent season. The community gath-ers to pray the rosary, drink a hot fruit drink called Ponche, and of course, break the piñata. All this gives joy to the season. But the real intention of the posadas is to accompany Mary and Jo-seph in their journey to Bethlehem.

The posadas are based on Sacred Scrip-ture that reads, “And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Naza-

reth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a man-ger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:4-7)

A procession around the neighborhood is essential, going from house to house, knocking door to door, looking for a place for baby Jesus to be born. When the last door opens, with great joy, the owners of the house welcome the holy pilgrims with the traditional hymn: “Entren Santos Peregrinos, Peregrinos, reciban éste rincón ...”, which means “Come in Holy Pilgrims, receive this hum-ble place…”

During the Advent season, the posadas are a tangible way to pre-pare the way of the Lord (Is 40:3), to prepare our hearts to the things about God, to forget our daily worries and raise our thought to what is divine, towards the hope of redemption. Let us open the door of our hearts and give shelter to the King of the universe, who in an incomprehensible act of love, becomes one of us to dwell among us.

The Cathedral ministries have organized eight “Posadas” here at the Mercy Hall (downstairs of the cathedral), and throughout the Sacramento area in the houses of generous parishioners who have opened their homes to us, each evening from December 16th to the 23rd, from 6pm to 9pm. Fill the Cathedral with Love and Remembrance Part of celebrating our sacraments is helping with the care of our beau-tiful Cathedral. This includes not only making sure it is well maintained

and respected, but also beautiful in its ability to reflect God’s glory and sacredness. Cappella Romana first appeared in Sacramento in 2009 with a pro-gram of Medieval Byzantine Chant, and recently returned from a tour to Romania where it was a featured ensemble in the Iasi Byzantine Music Festival. Padre Michael Festejo de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ~Leticia Hilbert~ El pasado domingo, 10 de diciembre empezaron las festividades para nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. La capilla dedicada a Ella fue decorada con rosas de muchos colores y brillantes luces. Durante las Misas de 1pm y 7pm se realizó una representación actuada de las apariciones de nuestra Madre Morena en México en 1531. Los mariachis no faltaron para acompañar la Santa Misa de 1pm y pos-

teriormente alegrar el convivio en el salón Mercy. Se preparó pozole, menudo y muchos otros antojitos mexicanos para la venta. El martes 12, día del milagro de la tilma, muchos devo-tos le cantaron las mañanitas y nuestro pastor el Padre Michael

O'Reilly le cantó el Ave María de Schubert. La Santa Misa fue con-celebrada por nuestro Pastor Emérito Msgn. James Murphy y Padre Kieran McMahon. Se le convidó a los asistentes con chocolate ca-liente y pan dulce. Gracias a todas las personas que donaron su tiempo, talento y tesoro para celebrar a Nuestra Madre. Las Posadas Navideñas Una hermosa tradición son las posadas navideñas. La comunidad se reúne para rezar el rosario, disfrutar de un ponche de frutas ca-lientito y por supuesto, quebrar la piñata. Toda esto alegra la tem-porada. Pero la razón real de las posadas es el acompañar a los peregrinos, María y José en su camino a y por Belén. Las posadas están basadas en las Sagradas Escrituras en que lee-mos: "4.José también, que estaba en Galilea, en la ciudad de Naza-ret, subió a Judea, a la ciudad de David, llamada Belén, porque era descendiente de David; 5.allí se inscribió con María, su esposa, que estaba embarazada. 6.Mientras estaban en Belén, llegó para María el momento del parto, 7.y dio a luz a su hijo primogénito. Lo en-volvió en pañales y lo acostó en un pesebre, pues no había lugar para ellos en la sala principal de la casa." Lc 2,4-7 Biblia Latino-americana. Durante la posada no falta la peregrinación alrededor del vecindario tocando de casa en casa, de puerta en puerta, pidiendo posada para que nazca el Niño Dios. Cuando la última puerta se abre, con algarabía los dueños de la casa reciben a la Sagrada Familia y se entona la tradicional canción: “Entren Santos peregrinos, pere-grinos, reciban éste rincon...” Durante este tiempo de Adviento, las posadas son una manera tan-gible de preparar el camino del Señor (Is 40:3), de preparar nues-tro corazón para las cosas de Dios; de olvidar nuestras pre-ocupaciónes mundanas y elevar nuestros pensamientos hacia lo divino; hacia la esperanza de la redención. Habrámosle las puertas de nuestro corazón y demos le posada al Rey del universo, que en un acto de amor incomprensible se hace uno de nosotros para habitar entre nosotros. En Catedral se han organizado ocho posadas alrededor de Sacra-mento, en las casas de personas generosas de nuestra comunidad que nos abren las puertas de su hogar y aquí en el salón Mercy (planta baja catedral). Todas son de 6pm a 9pm. Sharing the Gospel—People noticed John the Baptist. He loved God, and he used words honestly. He really wanted to help people change and grow closer to God. He stood out as some-one really different and special. People came from all around to hear him and learn about him. When people asked him questions, he pointed them to Jesus.

Prayer—Jesus, help me to be different because I love you.
