(Nov. 24, 2010) – There will be a famil- iar voice on ABC Sports when professional bowling returns to the network in January. Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Nelson ‘Bo’ Burton Jr., who served as color commentator for Pro Bowlers Tour tele- casts on ABC for 23 seasons from 1975-1997, will return as a special guest commenta- tor during the network’s live broadcast of the record $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions Saturday, Jan. 22, on ABC at 2:30 p.m. Eastern from Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas. The Tournament of Cham- pions finals, which will also pay a record $250,000 to the winner, marks the return of the PBA Tour to ABC for the first time in 14 years. “Bringing the Tournament of Champions back to ABC is outstanding,” said Burton, a 17-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titlist who formed a memorable announce team Nelson Burton Jr. Returns to ABC Sports Hall of Famer recalls great moments in Tournament of Champions history with legendary broadcaster Chris Schenkel throughout Burton’s time on the network. The PBA said that Bur- ton will set the scene during the upcoming Tournament of Champions telecast’s opening and introduce feature items throughout the presentation of the stepladder finals. ESPN’s Rob Stone will handle play- by-play duties and newly in- ducted PBA Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen will provide color commentary. “Longtime PBA fans will be thrilled to hear ‘Bo’ will be involved with this historic event,” said PBA Deputy Commissioner and COO Tom Clark. “He’ll be right back where he belongs, talking bowling on a Saturday after- noon on ABC as part of the greatest tournament ever.” Burton joined Schenkel on PBA Tour telecasts in 1975 at a time when ratings on ABC for PBA Tour telecasts were at their highest, generally rang- ing between 8.0 and 9.0 or ap- proximately 9 million homes. “Working with such a great professional like Chris, I was really just along for the ride,” Burton said. “The bigger the stage the better he was. For a broadcaster the prestige of that tournament was just phenom- enal.” Schenkel, also a member of the PBA Hall of Fame, died in 2005. Tournament of Champi- ons telecasts have been the scene of some of the most memorable moments in bowl- ing history such as the 1970 PBA Firestone Tournament of Champions where Don John- son came within one pin of per- fection, rolling a 299 en route to capturing the title on ABC. Most recently the Tournament of Champions produced anoth- er historic moment last season when Kelly Kulick became the first woman to win a PBA Tour event during an ESPN telecast that attracted a five-year high 1.7 million viewers. Those moments were also among Burton’s fondest Tour- nament of Champions memo- ries but others that stood out to him as a competitor, color ana- lyst and bowling fan include: 1965 – “Billy Hardwick defeating Dick Weber inspired me and a lot of the new young guys to believe that we could compete with the established superstars of the era.” 1967 – “Jack Biondolillo rolling the Tour’s first tele- vised 300 game. In general 300s were very rare back in the day and to do it under pressure on bowling’s biggest stage was unreal.” 1975 – “My first Tourna- ment of Champions as an an- nouncer had two of my former roommates and good friends —Barry Asher and Dave Da- vis — battling neck and neck in the championship match and Barry leaving a solid 8-pin in the eighth frame would ulti- mately cost him the match. It was also a telecast where Chris taught me my first broadcast- ing lesson — try not to pull for one player over another as the audience will resent it.” WICHITA STATE BOWLER IS 2011 CHUCK HALL STAR OF TOMORROW ARLINGTON, Texas Brent Bowers of Mulvane, Kan., is the recipient of the 2011 Chuck Hall Star of To- morrow Award. The award is presented annually by the United States Bowling Con- gress to a male high school senior or college student who competes in the sport of bowl- ing. A junior business major at Wichita State University, Bowers said it is an award he always dreamed of winning. “The last time a native Kan- san won the Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow award was 1995,” Bowers said. “The local news article that was written about the award winner was taped to my bedroom wall from the age of 7 until the day we moved out of that house when I was 17. It was my brother’s dream before it was mine, and from my family’s perspective, it is the greatest achievement there is for a young bowler.” In addition to having won national titles with the Shock- ers in 2008 and 2010, Bowers is a two-time member of Junior Team USA (2008, 2009). At the 2009 USBC Youth Open, he won the team title and took second in doubles. Bowers is a USBC Bronze coach and has served as an as- sociate coach at Wichita State since 2008. He has volun- tarily coached youth bowlers in Wichita-area centers since 2005 and is an active mem- ber of the Great Plains USBC Board of Directors. Heather D’Errico, the 2010 Alberta E. Crowe Star of To- morrow Award winner, said in her recommendation letter that it is important to have people such as Bowers active in the bowling community and to have them represent the younger generation of bowl- ers. “Brent is willing to do anything to help others and improve the bowling com- munity,” D’Errico said. “The way Brent carries himself in the bowling community, with such integrity and respect for everyone around him, is admi- rable.” Bowling has long been a family sport for Bowers, who likes to say he literally grew up in a bowling center. “I believe I started bowling regularly when I was about 2 years old,” Bowers said. “My mom bowled league with me in her belly for as long as the doc- tor would allow it. My brother bowled all the time, my mom was the youth director and my dad was the local bowling as- sociation secretary.” His older brother, Brian, was a big reason he started Brent Bowers contined on page 2 continued on page 8 Special Christmas Greeting Business Card Size Ad (this size) Only $40.00 Call Lillian on Tuesday at 562-807-3600

Which League Is The Smallest In The Citrus Belt?

by Frank WeilerREDLANDS — Which

league is the smallest in the Citrus Belt Association?

WILL MOSSONTTE, owner of EMPIRE BOWL, thinks he has two leagues which qualify for that title.

Mossontte is referring to two leagues with only four teams. Are these two four team leagues the smallest? Let me know, at [email protected], if you are aware of a league with just two or three teams.

I wonder if there ever was a ONE TEAM LEAGUE? Im-possible you say? I disagree. In a rural bowling center with very few bowlers, I could en-vision a single team league. A league where that single team bowls against a blind team ev-ery week.

Anyway, Empire Bowl’s Striking Beauties League is a four team all ladies league that bowls on Monday mornings. It has been around for about twenty years, and league sec-retary ANNETTE FACE has guided the league for many of those years.

The league high average is a 149 by JACKIE HENSON. Annette Face has the league high game of 201, while the high series of 513 was bowled by PAM HEDLESTON.

Empire Bowl’s second four team league is the San Bernar-dino County Medical Spouses Association (SBCMSA). This ladies league is in its second season and is led by KIM HUDSON with a 190 average. Kim also has the leagues high game and series of 244 and 617.

Empire manager SHERRY WILLIAMS loves her small ladies leagues because the bowlers are so enthusiastic. Enthusiastic bowlers are hap-py bowlers, and happy bowl-ers are loyal bowlers. Sherry and her ladies want to thank the BOWLING NEWS for taking interest in their efforts on the lanes.

“I had no idea what the difference was between ‘bowling’ and ‘practicing’, and then I met Mark Lewis,” Bowers said. “From that point on, Coach L took me under his wing and guided my talent in the right direction.”

The Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow Award is named for the former Young American Bowling Alliance executive director who spent much of his adult life helping young people through his association with junior bowling.

For being selected as the award winner, Bowers will receive a $6,000 scholarship that will be presented at the annual USBC Convention scheduled for June 29-July 1 at the Gaylord Texan hotel in Grapevine, Texas.

BOWLINGNEWS SUDOKU

Hello ICSD Bowlers & FansBUENOS ARIES—I always welcome with a warm heart the

Bowlers of the world. I have been reminiscing about the 1997 World Games for the Deaf and the 2001 to 2009 Summer Deaf-lympics. I have experienced and recorded the results from them as well as the 2003 World Deaf Bowling Championships. Thank you to Connie Marchionne. I have learned a lot about Bowling and the world from Connie.

I went to Buenos Aires, Argentina, 14-18 August 2010. I inspected the bowling alleys for the 2011 World Deaf Bowling Championships. The Organizing Committee showed me two different bowling venues. Dragon is in the middle of South of Buenos Aires and Bowling Co. is North of Buenos Aires. Both bowling venue are good places and both includes access to the mall area.

Dragon Bowling, with 20 lanes, was chosen to host the 2011 World Deaf Bowling Championships. The building includes a shopping mall with food outlets and cinemas. It is only 30 min to the centrum (4 hotels). More information can be found at: http://www.deafbowling2011.com/.

World Deaf Bowling is now on Facebook! The link to the page is - www.facebook.com/World.Deaf.Bowling

The official date for the 2011 World Deaf Bowling Champi-onships is 23 August to 03 September and will follow the Regu-lations of Deaf World Championships.

LAKEWOOD — Cal Bowl was host Monday for the final week in November and It hardly seems possible that the December 20th Christmas party at Linbrook Bowl is only three weeks away.

Super sub Cil Moons led the scoring honor roll with 208-552 and since there was only four 500 series posted, we will include several 490 and over clusters. Margo McClain had 524, followed by Virginia Gray 502, Dee Phipps 501, Gloryetta Brown 498, Karen Mauricio, Theresa Jackson and Carol Davis tied on 496 series, Mary Dixon 492 and Doris Lewis 490.

Pat Willmore, former member of the league for more than 20 years, dropped by to say hi and sign up for the annual March Las Vegas trip. Pat looks and feels great at age 92 and though she can’t bowl now, she stays in touch with the league via frequent visits.

Roberta McNaught will be returning to bowl next week following a 2-week cruise and vacation to Hawaii with hub-by, David. Hopefully, she will pick up where she left off with a current 182 average because the second Position Round is due next week.

Until Betty Phillips gets the league sheets done, we don’t know at this writing what the scheduled line up will be. Tied teams will bowl position according to total pins but we do know the top four teams are Fountain Bowl #1, Keystone #2, Cal Bowl #1 and Bowling News. The complete lane assignment schedule will be posted at the Cerritos con-trol desk prior to bowling on Monday.

NEXT WEEK: Monday 10 a.m. December 6 at Cerritos Lanes.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSFINALLY!!! BOB JONES HITS HIS FIRST 300 & A 749 AT CANOGA PARK

by Connie MarchioneWINNETKA—It was a long time coming after three decades starting with a two step delivery

and countless hours of watching old tapes of Earl Anthony’s bowling form, then hitting several no-tap 300s in No-tap tournaments, a 299 in a not sanctioned Blue Chip Tournament. Then came a heart breaking 298 in which the last ball was a perfect pocket hit 7-10 split) in 2008 So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League, Robert G. Jones finally got his first sanctioned 300.

Not wanting to bother this writer on Thanksgiving Day, Bob Jones showed up at this writer’s door on Friday morning with the good news. Bob said last Wednesday at Canoga Park Bowl, he picked up the Bowling News to read in this column the latest item about his own bowling. He shook his head and thought, “Must get a 300 soon!”

Incidentally, Bob was there to sub for an absent guy with a 206 average in the afternoon Funtim-ers Trios League and felt good at the start with strikes after strikes. He completed with all 12 good strikes for his first 300 game. Bowlers stopped to congratulate and hugged him for his long sought achievement.

So much satisfied with his success, Bob finished with games of 213 and 236 for a 749. You might call him a “super sub” in this league because that is his third 700 in seven weeks as a sub. His previous 721 and the week prior 719 along with the present 749 all led the league in high series of the week but sub’s scores do not count for season high series. Anyway, Bob’s 749 pushed his average up to 221 for 21 games. The Funtimers League has 21 teams including one with three deaf bowlers on a team ably named ASL Users. They are Richard Cato, Anne Wallis and Arnold Fried-man and Arnold is doing well leading the team with 182 average.

Proudly this writer congratulate his friend Bob for his accomplishment and Bob after thanking, said he will try for his first 800. Go get it!

So Bob Jones will be getting his hard earned 300 ring from USBC.

DEAF SENIORS BOWLERS OF AMERICA HAS SUPER SENIORS PRIZE LISTLAS VEGAS — Deaf Senior Bowlers of America concluded its 14th annual tournament at the

Orleans Bowling Center last October and DSBA secretary-Treasurer Carol Moers mailed out the results and prize money two weeks ago. It was best to note that among the prize lists were two spe-cial prize lists, one for each 3 events, male and female high individual scratch and handicap game and series. The other is something-special super seniors 70 years and older individuals out of main prize money in each of two events (single s and doubles).

While the first list is too long to mention here, the super seniors 70-ers winners of $10.00 each were (women list) Handicap singles series Janice Bowers Denver 675, Carol Moers, Denver 670, Mary Sickinger, Riverside 665 and Handicap doubles series Bowers gain 651, Dell Norma Cornel-lier, CA 664 and Sickinger again 664 and (men list) Handicap singles series Leo Kanning, MT 653, Gardy Rodgers, CA 834, Hugo Horn, Las Vegas 626 and Handicap doubles series Horn again 686, Basil Brackett, CN 680, Clarence Jenkins, NY 673.

This writer applauds this new special super seniors addition and urges all other tournaments to establish the same to encourage their older seniors to keep on bowling and entering their tourna-ments. Many seniors quit entering because its hard for them to cash in prize money.

LAKEWOOD — Jimmy Wong, one of the nicest guys you will ever meet won our Annual Thanksgiving Event at CAL Bowl topping a great turnout of 555 entrants finally downing upstart Sandy Rosenbloom in the title game to take home $8075. The fun time 3 day 11 squad event which was the biggest Thanks-giving Event in our History. The shot was semi tough and fair ev-ery day presented a challenge for some, but many found it to their liking. On Thursday night, after everyone ate their Thanksgiving dinners they came out for the first night of qualifying. The cut scores for the first night were +71 for the men and +74 for the women. On Friday night they came out again, of course some went shopping first in honor of Black Friday. The cut scores Friday were +57 for the men and +58 for the women. Sat-urday would see the big day, we had a late start to our first squad and due to the busy squads never caught up, but that did not stop the bowlers. Saturday saw cut scores of +65 for the men and +24 for the women. In our re-entry squad, the cut scores were +53 for the men and +25 for the women. We added 5 super seniors to the board and they were Bobbie McCol-lum, Susan Ebilane, Rico Cayton, Adam Drodz, and John Greico Sr. . We took 115 bowlers to the semi-finals this week, and thanks for all who participated and wish we could have taken eveyone to the Semis :-)

For all qualifying squads our top qualifier for the men was Wil-liam Garrett with a +162, and for the women it was Sonia Coro-nado with a +126. Each will get paid entries into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed overall draws the Match Se-ries, and this week it was worth $906. The top seed drew a 647 this week, and after review, no one bowled that score, so it will carry over to next week at Mission Hills. We will estimate the pot to be $1250. For the 3-6-9 qualify-ing this week, there were a lot that qualified for the roll-off. The final person standing after all the

In 2nd place, it was Todd Edwards and Rodney Payne with a 1428 for $170. They tied with Matthew Garcia and Michael Villarreal. They also had a 1428 and would get $170. The low to cash was 1350; we paid out $2430, in doubles.

In the semis this week we saw Jimmy Wong lead the field with a +164 to sit out and bowl for the title. Jerilyn Morales came in sec-ond at +127 and she would sit out the first round. It took a +42 for the men and a + 39 for the women. We did have a three way tie for the +42 and they would have to bowl 9th and 10th frame roll-off to de-termine which one would make it into match play. Joselito Ramos would advance out of that roll-off, with Leo Silva and Cezar Marcella finishing in 33rd and 34th place.

This week, our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of draw-ing the match game worth $3230 and drew a 109 this week, and no bowlers bowled that score. The pot will max out at $3500 with a back-up amount when we visit Mission Hills this week. This week we had five new bowlers join us, and no returning member.

This would bring us to our top 32 Match Play finals now. In the first round, the fifteen losers were Rogelio Esquivel, Edrich Miller, Carlos Castillo, Sonia Coronado, Minh Dang, David Dittlinger, Pablo Castro, Danny Guevarra, Jhun Tan, Ted Villaroman, George Covarrubias, John Gonzales, Jo-sette Atangan, Joselito Ramos, and Sarah Magno. They would each receive checks of $200 each. In the second round, the losers

were Jerilyn Morales, Faye Josa-fat, Thomas Chavez, Salvatorre Galluzzo, Miriam Galluzzo, Adam Ferry, Louis D. Evans, and Joshua Navarro. They would get checks of $225 each. In the third round, the losers were Eldie Abutan, Eu-gene Haynes, Andrew Lung, Ed Abarca and each would get checks of $250. This would get us down to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $127 (Mi-chael Villarreal) to a high of $296 (Sandy Rosenblum) depending on who would win. In the fourth round we saw Chris Romero (14th seed) bowling Sandy Rosenblum (32nd seed). In this match, Sandy would get the better of Chris with a 223 to 209 finish. In the other match we saw Michael Villarreal (24th seed) bowling Bart Sanchez (17th seed). In this match, Bart would get the better of Michael in this match with a 234 to 231 final score. Chris and Michael finished in fourth and fifth places getting checks for $465 each. Our semi-final match this week was on lanes thirty-one and thirty-three; we had our 32nd and 17th seeds into the top 32 bowling each other. In our horses this week we would see Bart paying $197 and Sandy pay-ing $296 if they win their match. The match was close as both bowl-ers would be getting their marks. Sandy was nervous through out the match, but she calmed down in the 7th frame by getting the first dou-ble of the match to put her in front but only by a slim margin. Bart would match her strike in the 7th frame but would leave the 1-3-9 in the 8th and only pick up two of the pins, giving him 144 through the 8th. Sandy would not look back, as she would finish with a 201/243 to Bart’s 178/210. For those lucky “investors” that had Sandy as a horse, she paid $296. Bart finished in third place and received $925. Nice going Bart!!

The title game is set and was on lanes 7-8. Jimmy being the top seed elected to have Sandy start the match. She spared in the first frame. Jimmy also spared in the first frame and got a seven count on his next ball but picked it up.

Sandy would come up in the sec-ond and leave the 7-9 split picking up only the 1 of them. In the third frame she would leave the 4-10 split missing both this time, she had 35 after 3 frames. Jimmy came up in the 3rd and 4th frames get-ting strikes both times, so he had a 37 with 2 strikes. Sandy would get a spare in the 4th but leave the 10 pin in the 5th and missed it, giv-ing her a 63 after 5 frames. Jimmy came up in the 5th and 6th getting 2 more strikes. This would prove to be big enough lead for Jimmy as Sandy could not recover from her open frames. Jimmy finished with a 233/261 to Sandy’s 139/181. This would be Jimmy’s first win in the ABTA; he would take home $3700 for first place and another $3850 in cash and carry, $350 for bowling more than 29 squads in the calendar year, $175 for pre-pay, giving him a total of $8075. Sandy would finish in second place for $1850. These bowlers really did well and due to the large turnout and late start they per-formed so well. We are proud of Jimmy winning second title and of Sandy who won 5 straight matches which is so hard to do.

Champion Jimmy Wong is from San Gabriel and used a Lane 1 H2O drilled by himself. He is married to Ada and they have 3 boys Alex, Anson, and Alden. He would like to thank his wife, the Lungs, all the Mao-Liu group, ABTA and Staff.

He is married to Grace and they have one son Gerald who is also an ABTA bowler, he finished in 76th place this weekend. He would like to thank his whole fam-ily, “Barkada”. He would also like to thank his brother Resty, Minh, Ted, Julian, Teddy and Ronnie.

Chris Romero (4th Place) is from Carson and used a Storm En-ergy drilled by Tony Figuera. He is married to Delia and they have 5 children. He would like to thank God for all his blessings, his wife for her support and his kids for not pursuing bowling so he can enjoy his time bowling. A special thank you to his brothers and family.

Michael Villarreal (5th Place) is from Long Beach and he is single. He used a Storm Furious drilled by himself. He would like to thank Emerson Wafer for all his time and energy to help him im-prove his game. A special thank you to his number 1 fans, Matt and Bobbie.

BOWLING NEWSPage 6 December 2, 2010

Changing Of The Guardby John Jowdy

LAS VEGAS—The recently held World Series of Bowling held at South Point Lanes in Las Vegas featured a 12-day marathon on the PBA’s Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion, and Shark lane conditions that led to five national championships.

In addition, the 60 game composite scores determined the final qualifying standings for the PBA World Championship, including the top eight players who will return to South Point January 14-15-16 for a first- ever three day live stepladder event.

The same 60 games decided the field of six United States and six international players who will bowl first-ever USA versus The World team championship

If results of the World Series of Bowling are any indication of things to come, bowling fans will be seeing new faces, featuring more international players and the absence of some of the PBA’s most established stars. For example, Walter Ray Williams, #I on the PBA point list, Mike Scrog-gins, the #3 point leader, and such stars as Tommy Jones, Jason Couch, Ryan Shafer, Patrick Allen, Parker Bohn III, and Pete Weber, all failed to make any of the TV shows. More unbelievable, Walter Ray Williams cashed in only ONE event, a probable indication that Williams may be nearing the end of his illustrious career. Additionally, Norm Duke made only one show and faired rather poorly in the other events (by Norm’s standards)

No ladies, which included Kelly Kulick and Liz Johnson, came close to qualifying for the TV show.

Five players were top qualifiers for the TV show for the first time.… Don McCune, Columbis’s Andres Gomez, Scott Norton, Jun-Yung Kim of South Korea, and Canada’s Dan MacLelland. McCune set a nine-game scoring record iun match play, posting a 9-0 record and averaging 274.22 with games of 300, 253, 275, 279, 279, 236,

and 267. Mc Cune is the only one with a PBA title.

The Cheetah pattern is the only event that features five PBA players who reside in the United States. Every other final has at least one international player.

The Scorpion pattern featured four foreign players, with Bill O’Neill the lone American bowler. Furthermore, the Shark pattern included three foreign bowlers, Dan MacClelland of Canada, Asku Palerrmaa, of Finland, and Jason Belmonte of Australia, along with Tom Smallwood and Mike Fagan as the only Americans.

The USA bowlers who qualified for the World Team Championship were Bill O’Neill, . Sean Rash, Chris Barnes, Michael Haugen Jr., Wes Malott, and Ronnie Russell. Noticeably missing? Walter Ray Williams and Norm Duke.

The World Team qualifiers were as follows: Osku Palermaa, Finland, Mika Koivuneimi, Finland (now a USA resident) Jason Belmonte, Australia, Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, Kimmo Lehtonen, Finland, and Dan MacLelland, Canada. Judging from this roster, Finland appears to feature the strongest contingent of foreign players.

Japanese bowlers, once a formidable force in the bowling world, have fared rather poorly dur-ing the past five years. Also, such bowling strongholds as Malaysia, Sweden, and Norway, haven’t had a serious impact in international play, while England and Korea have shown great strides in competition outside their home grounds.

The 2010-11 PBA tour is but one-third of the way for the season but, by virtue of the results of the World Series of Bowling, there is every indication that bowling supremacy by superstars Norm Duke and Walter Ray Williams may be coming to an end. However, with all due respect to Williams and Duke, the World Series of Bowling has become an stumbling block for a number of PBA play-ers who later established their talents away from the 12-day grind. Only time will tell!

On the other hand, Bill O’Neill’s recent performances seem to stamp him as heir to the PBA throne, with Chris Barnes and Sean Rash continuing to hold their own.

Not too surprising, Chris Barnes is generally acknowledged as the BEST bowler on the tour (according to the consensus among PBA players)

Unfortunately for Chris Barnes, his TV record leaves a lot to be desired. Had Barnes recorded a respectable TV record, he would be close to, or over 20 titles…. a mark reserved for the greatest bowlers in PBA history, shared by only 12 players, and a sure entry to the PBA Hall of Fame.

NEW YEARS NIGHT

Rosie Schwerbrock and Larry Worrell present Juan “Revs” Camarena (center) his 300 ring.

1976 – “Marshall Holman arrives!”1978 – “Making the telecast myself and blowing the semifinal match against Teata Semiz by

missing the 3-10 split. I felt like the tournament was mine if I get past that game.”1981 – “Steve Cook bowling the best and most aggressive game I ever witnessed. Bowling 287,

he put everything he had into every shot with that super strike ball that he possessed.”“Two other memories I have were Mike Durbin winning the Tournament of Champions with

three different bowling styles (big hook, full-roller and straight shot), and it still amazes me that three of bowling greats—Mark Roth, Dick Weber and Walter Ray Williams Jr. don’t have the Tour-nament of Champions on their resumes.”

Originally conceived as a showcase for recent Tour champions, the Tournament of Champions is now open to all PBA titlists (national tour, senior tour and regional) and will be a week-long competition that runs Jan. 16-22, at the Red Rock Resort and Bowling Center. The addition of all PBA titlists will make the tournament even more challenging, according to Burton.

“With its record prize fund and the addition of all the PBA titlists, it adds an enormous amount of prestige to the tournament,” Burton said. “With so much talent in one event I think it will be one of the hardest tournaments of all time to win.”

Burton recalled the prestige of the Tournament of Champions during his run on the network, and how the PBA’s signature tournament was recognized by many of ABC’s top executives.

“Bob Iger (now Walt Disney Co. CEO) and Dennis Swanson (former president of ABC Sports) were often in attendance for the TV finals, and of course, Harvey Firestone, who was CEO of Fire-stone at the time was there as well,” Burton said. “Naturally it was a huge event that sometimes had live entertainment. I remember jazz great Pete Fountain and his orchestra performed live one year on the lanes adjacent to the TV pair.”

ABC’s renewed coverage of the Tournament of Champions is part of the PBA’s three-year ex-tension with ESPN which will run through 2013. The PBA has a long-standing relationship with ESPN, which began when the network launched in 1979. For the past seven years, the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour finals have aired Sunday afternoons on ESPN.

In addition to his return to the Tournament of Champions, Burton will also host the PBA Hall of Fame ceremonies the evening of Jan. 22 at Red Rock where Pedersen, a 13-time Tour winner, 11-time Senior Tour titlist Dale Eagle, and lane maintenance pioneer Len Nicholson will be inducted into the Hall.

Charles SwonderLoved Bowling

by Barbara Smith

LA HABRA — My uncle Charles loved bowling and at 74 was still very active. On September 23 this year, he ac-tually collapsed at AMF Carter Lanes while competing in one of his five weekly leagues.

Charles was born in St. Louis, Misssouri, raised in Evansville, Indiana, and lived in Fullerton the past 20 years. He is survived by 2 sisters, 2 children, 4 grandchildren, 2 nieces and 1 nephew. All bowl-ers or bowling fans!

Uncle Charles bowled at AMF Carter Lanes, Linbrook, La Habra Bowl, Mar Vista and Yorba Linda. We loved to bowl in Vegas leagues on Sunday nights. A family story tells that his father died in a bowling center!

Charles passed November 11 and we will miss his com-petitive good nature.
