NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

9 INDUCTED IN GREAT LAKES DEAF BOWLING HALL OF FAME LAS VEGAS—The highlights of the 75th anniversary celebration Great Lakes Deaf Bowling

Association tournament held Saturday afternoon at Red Rock Resort were the Hall of Fame Ceremony and Awards luncheon, followed in the evening Cirque du Sign Floor-

show in the Resort’s Ballroom. both events were well attended by over 400 bowlers and fans.At the end of the luncheon, former GLDBA president, Lawson McNally ably handled the Mas-

ter of Ceremonies chores beginning with the women’s events awards. Then following respectively with the men’s events awards and the GLDWBA Hall of Fame inductees.(The writer from where he sat, was not able the get the names of each recipients.)

The men’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony proceeded with video of each inductee’s picture and name on the screen off the stage. Nine inductees were featured with two honored as Leaders and 7 as Bowlers.

First inductee was Michael Jasko, Cleveland, honored as Leader.Second was James Dudasik, Cleveland honored as Bowler and followed by 6 more as bowler.

They were in order Ricky Kaufman, Flint; William Tongan, Chicago; Jerry Trayner, Canada; Paul Trayner, Detroit; Gerald Vernon, Flint and Ronnie Zuchegno, Sr., Flint who passed away 6 months ago, was honored posthumously.

Lastly the ninth, Walter Niesluchowski, Chicago as Leader. Each gave their induction speech and Ronnie Zuchegno, Jr. spoke for his late father.

Intently, four of the inductees are present officers of GLDBA. Niesluchowski is the President, Jerry Trayner, Vice President, Jasko, Secretary-Treasurer and Dudasik the Hall of Fame Chairman. Anyway they and 5 other inductees join 76 others in GLDBA Hall of Fame to bring the total up to 85 men since this Hall of Fame Shrine began in 1955.

ABAKUMOFF LED DEAF TRAVEL WITH 776 AT ACTION LANESEL MONTE—So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League had one of its rare low scoring sessions Sunday

at Action Lanes in its 51 years. The bowlers averaged 148.5 per game on the lanes, which seemed like heavily oiled 40 feet long. Only Ed Abakumoff and Pablo Yoma were able to make the day’s honor roll with 776 and 759 respectively.

Abakumoff hit 189-207-183-197 and Yoma 168-205-201-185 while Gorman Low and Bob Jones failed hit 700 by 5 pins and 8 pins respectively. This is critical because Abakumoff leads league average at 192, one pin over Yoma and 2 over Jones with one final position round session left.

Despite losing 9-11, Jones’ S. F. Valley is safe as League leader and will face Low’s L.A. City in the final position round. In spite of his scores, Yoma did not get any help from his teammates and his 3rd place Lake Elsinore lost 6-14 to Chino. Chino moved up to third and will face Lake Elsinore again in the position round. Abakumoff’s Riverside will face Mid City in the May 1 final position round at Linbrook Bowl.

MESSAGE TO SENIOR CITIZEN OF PCDBA During the tournament on May 26-29, 2011 at the Sunset Station Hotel and Casino in Hender-

son, NV, there will be a regular meeting. The meeting will be held on May 27th at 6:30 p.m. We need 10 or more senior citizens to come

Francisco Wins 2nd ABTA Title at Cal Bowl (L—R) Eric Snow CAL Manager, Arnold Trias ABTA member, Steve Benavente (finalist), Annaliza Agoncillo (Champ’s Cousin) and ABTA member, Alvin Francisco (Champion) $2,900, Mayla Soon, Joenito Soon (runner up), Vic Paolucci 6th, Maribeth Colian, Jean Colian 3rd and Leo Silva 7th.

Francisco Wins Special RaffleWe conducted a raffle for a needy cause as one of our mem-

bers’ family passed away due to cancer and they needed help for funeral expenses. We raised over $250 for the cause and it is only fitting that one of the “Good Guys” Alvin Francisco won the new CELL Ball and good things happened to good people as Alvin went on to win his second ABTA Title later in the eve. From left, Mary Huynh, “Iron Mike “ Villarreal (family member) Alvin Francisco, family member Richard Aquino, and Alyssa.

LAKEWOOD — We re-turned to Cal Bowl this past weekend and had a nice turn-out of 183 entries on the day before Easter. We had a me-dium tough shot this past week making the cut scores of +50 for the men and +26 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 female) were last week’s Champion Lonzell Burnett (+42) and Dominic Antonio (+32), and for the women it was Vallary McDaniels (+13). Remember, Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 48 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week.

Our top qualifiers for the men were Steve Benavente and Vic Garcia with a +123. For the women it was Beth Borci with a +69. All of them will get a paid entry into a fu-ture regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed overall draws the Match Series. This week it was worth $822. The top seed drew a 633. We had no bowlers that bowled this score during qualifying, and will carry over to Linbrook, where we will estimate the Match Series at $1,150. For the 3-6-9 qualifying this week. Louis Evans outlasted the field and go for the pot of $1,000, but he missed on the first shot and received consolation of $50 for beer money. We will have a carry-over of $1,100 at Linbrook.

In the optional doubles; finishing in first were Nghiem Tran and Minh Dang with a 1388 for $150. Finishing sec-ond was father and son duo of Roland and Shaun Suase with 1387 for $130. We had a total of $1,230 paid out in doubles with low to cash of 1314.

In the semis, Alvin Francis-co, lead the field with a +114 to sit out and bowl for the title

this week. Coming in second was David M. Jones with a +97 to sit out the first round. It took a +36 for the men and women combined, with Ryan Nam and Shaun Suase tying at +36 and had 9th and 10th frame roll-off to determine who would advance into our Match Play finals this week. It was Shaun who would win that roll-off.

Top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $1,970. Francisco drew a 131. Af-ter a review of all the scores bowled, we had two bowlers who shot that score, Tham Tran and Fred Ringor. Each would take home $985 for their third game scratch score. Not a great score but well reward-ed:__) We will estimate the new pot at $1,200 next week at Linbrook. This week we had eight new bowlers join. Let us welcome these new bowlers to the club, Fred McDaniels, Vallary McDaniels, Travis Morris, Korng Ngow, Marina Suos, Jason Steven, Dominic Trias, and Elvie Yee.

This would bring us to our Match Play finals. In the first round the seven losers were Aishaasade Abdur-Raheem, Sal Galluzzo, Steve Be-navente, Leonard Garcia, Ada Wong-Hum, Roland Suase, and Nghiem Tran. They re-ceived checks of $100 each. In the second round Shaun Suase, Allan Calabio, Vic Paolucci, and Leo Silva received checks of $105 each. This would get us down to the final five bowl-ers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $41 (David M. Jones) to a high of $94 (Jean Colian) depending on who would win. In this round we saw Jean Colian (10th seed) bowling Andy Mak (4th seed). In this match, Jean, the crowd favorite, with her big cheering

section would get the better of Andy with a 245 to 227 finish. In the other match we saw Jo-enito Soon (5th seed) bowling David M. Jones (2nd seed). In this match, David would struggle as he lost his shot and Joenito went on to win this match with a 225 to 165 fin-ish. David and Andy finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $110 each. Our semi-final match was all set now. It would be bowled on Lanes 11 and 12 this week and pit our 5th seed against our 10th seed. In our horses this week we would see Jean paying $94 and Joenito paying $51 if they would win their match. In this match, Jean would struggle as she was getting tired from all the games bowled, and Jo-enito would string strikes as he would go on to win this match with a 201/239 to 137/178 to advance. That would give Jo-enito, one of our most loyal supporters the victory and for those lucky “investors” that had Joenito as a horse, he paid $51. Jean finished 3rd and re-ceived $200. She bowled very, very well!

The title game was set and Alvin being the top seed elected to have Joenito start the match. This match stayed close early on as both bowlers had spare and 3 strikes in the first 4 frames. But it was Jo-enito that would blink first as he spared in the 5th frame and that would prove to be the only opening that Alvin would need as he continued to be hot on this pair after struggling dur-ing his warm up preceding the title match. Alvin would finish with a 256/280 to 180/218 to take home his 2nd ABTA title.

Alvin would take home $1,000 for 1st place, $1,700 for cash and carry, $100 for wearing an ABTA Shirt, and $100 for using an 900 Global ball (by the way this is the

same Raw Profit that he used for his first ABTA champi-onship up in Vegas this past January) giving him a total of $2,900 for the win. Joenito re-ceived $500 for 2nd place, and bowled superbly winning four straight matches. He is a great guy, nice to all!!, and will be a champion in the future!

Champion Alvin Francisco is from Long Beach, and used a Raw Profit drilled at South Point Pro Shop. He is single, and would like to say thank you to his cousins for their support, Eric Snow, manager at Cal Bowl for his support and all the ABTA Staff and friends.

Joenito Soon (2nd Place) is from Buena Park and used a Storm Reign of Fire drilled by Ramon at Carter Bowl. He is married to Mayla and their son JJ another fine bowler is an ABTA Champion. He would like to thank God, his wife and son, and family for their sup-port along with all his friends at ABTA.

Jean Colian (3rd Place) is from Long Beach and used a Morich. She is single and would like to thank God, her parents Pilbert and Maribeth, all the “Aunties” and “Un-cles”, friends at ABTA and Cal Bowl. Jean was TOUGH at CAL-)))

The weekly ball winner of a 900/Sponsor Global Ball was Lord Ferguson, he received the Double Clutch ball. Each time you bowl, you get a free ticket for this prize given away by our Sponsor, 900 Global. ABTA shirt winners were Ken Seiple Sr and Jack Trongale, regular ABTA Entrys was Be-dell Vasquez and Glenn Mat-sumoto, a Memorial Entry was Ariel Ocampo, and 2 nights in Las Vegas was Roy Li. Win-ner of a special Ball raffle to support Richard Aquino’s cousin’s Memorial Services fund, (a great cause) was Al-vin Francisco, the family was able to collect $545, and they thank the ABTA and bowlers very much for the help.

The rest of the results are in the payoff column in this paper.

Men’s high scratch series this week was bowled by Mike Hollowell 678, Gary Armstrong (AKA weak) 634 (Gary once shot a 300 game and an 800 series n the Business Network League.) And thank goodness Glenn Belanger (AKA Coyote Kid) didn’t get in the “Hall of Shame” again this week, he shot the third high men’s series 556. Frank Street gets a 680, Dave Lindsay 674, Abe Diao 672 and our own Dillon Vargas, 651. Now are you ready to let me brag about our lady bowlers? Melisa Gould shot a 257 game and 604 series. Jackie Burns bowled like a house on fire to make a showing for the gals with 223 / 200 /595.FRIDAY JACKPOT Starting over is always a challenge.”Do we sand bag or not?” That is the question. Well, Neil Northrop didn’t even consider such a thing. He started the first night with a 258 / 210 and 203 for a 671. Another bowler with integrity was Per Mortensen who plunged right in and shot 253 / 627 to eliminate any chance of getting any handicap. What brave and wonderful men. I always knew there were some among us.FRIDAY VEGAS When a Vegas League is only a few weeks away from taking that long awaited trip, something in the blood starts to stir. They have visions of grandeur, dreams of riches, and thoughts of shooting over 700. All kinds of stuff like that. Right? Well, some people just don’t wait until they get to Vegas to start manifesting their dreams. And the Friday Vegas bowlers are a prime example. Rick Lange shoots a 735 series as easily as eating ice cream, with games of 279 / 233 and 22. Then Noli DeMesa proves how to do it by shooting 258-248 and 203 for 709. Freddie Gutierrez came close with 267- 218 and 213 for 698. Jim Barnes, 674, Sal Petrella 671, Bob Wheeler 651 and Hugh Gray 650. Ladies aren’t quite as greedy but go after what they want in a more subtle way. Right? Jenny Dingle shoots 236-225-194 / 622, Jackie Burns 226 / 553, Alona De Mesa 519, Anita Kleiman 511, Betsy Rubio 508 and Sherry Glass 504. Mary Ann Thomas bowled a nice 203 game.

Although his parents were not bowlers, Tony was introduced to bowling at age 11 by close members of the family who convinced him to join a summer youth league at Regency Lanes, in Bakers-field. Tony was hooked! He bowled all the local and state youth tournaments and not long after, Tony’s brother Ty, joined him in those youth activities. Since then Tony has been BVL District Champion three times (2007-2009) and State Champion twice (2007, 2008); and qualified to become a member of the Southern California Junior Amateur Tour and Junior Bowlers Tour and participated in the Junior World Team Challenge (2007-2010). He qualified and participated in the Teen Masters National Finals (2008) and is a member of the USBC Junior Gold Program since 2007 and will participate in this year’s Junior Gold Champion-ship in Las Vegas, July 9-15. Among his many first place finishes, Tony regards very special his winning First Place in the Youth Travel Tournament and being named Bowler of the Year with High Season Point Totals. In the collegiate area, Tony continues to improve his game un-der the able assistance of Coaches Joey Shugart and Tad Kanae, during an almost year-round schedule. Practice runs from June through August and tournament competition September through April. Tony was a member of the 2010-2011 First Place Collegiate Team Events and was chosen as an alternate for the A-Team at the Intercollegiate Team Sectionals the past two years. In addition to carrying a course overload for three semesters in addition to his position as a Teaching Assistant for the top Hotel College Professor, Tony works 20-40 hours per week as a Cus-tomer Solutions Specialist for Go Wireless; and attends monthly meetings and activities for the NSCS and the UNLV Chapter of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals. With time permitting, Tony, enjoys the mountains, various Water Sports, Basketball, and working out at the Gym. However, in spite of such a full agenda, this young man remembers where he came from. He noted, “Bowling has been a vital element in my life both on and off the lanes; however, “I have never lost sight of all my immediate family members who believed in my ability and supported me all the way...as well as the Regency Lanes “bowling family”...The Moody Family, the late Margie Langdon, Vernon Spangler, DC Williams and Bette Addington, just to name a few.” Anthony J. Rose will be honored and presented his awards dur-ing our 2011 Annual Meeting at the CUSBC Convention at the Ontario Radisson, June 12th.

First Time Bowlers Become First Time Winners!

SAN DIMAS—When Mixed Junior’s Jackie Oeser and Cody Myer signed up to bowl in Sandi’s Superstars at Chaparral Lanes, in San Dimas, California, 14 weeks ago, they never imagined they’d end their first season with a first place trophy!

One brisk Saturday morning in January, at 9:30 a.m., strang-ers Jackie Oeser, age 7, and Cody Myer, age 6, were randomly placed together in what came to be known as Team Bowlz-A-Lot. Chaparral Lanes Junior Program, Sandi’s Superstars, led by Sandi Makroglous, gathered 6 teams of two players each.

It was fun and exciting for the junior bowlers to hone their skills as the league progressed. Over the weeks to come, the play-ers learned a great deal about bowling, but they also learned a great deal about team spirit.

Bowlers needed to complete a minimum of 18 games to be eligible for any league award. And when the final ball was thrown, Team Bowlz-A-Lot emerged the first place winner! Team Bowlz-A-Lot captured Season High Sco
