Upon being elected Pres-ident of the CUSBC one of my comments was there was going to be better communi-cation with the membership and local associations.

Here is an update regard-ing the CUSBC board of directors; at the board meet-ing on October 10 the fol-lowing appointments were approved. Rosie Parker was appointed to 1st Vice Presi-dent, with Lynn Graves as Sergeant at Arms and the following were appointed as directors. Sandi Thomp-son from Pleasanton, Den-nis Ganduglia from Rohnert Park, Mike Hillman from Fremont and Larry Worrall from Long Beach.

For the change in the tournament directors; to be-gin, when the three organi-zations agreed to merge, a part of the agreement was to retain the directors for two years. It has been more like 5 years and because of the financial impact it was time to bite the bullet and make some changes. With that, all three tournament direc-tors were released and Larry Peppers CUSBC Associa-tion Manager employed Me-lissa Ade as Adult Tourna-ment director for the Open and Women’s Championship and Lynn Matsubara will be Youth Tournament director for Pepsi and Youth Cham-pionships.

Open Letter To California Bowlers From Your President

Speaking of the cham-pionship 2011 tournaments; the CUSBC Women’s events are being hosted by Ven-tura USBC WBA and Open events are scheduled for Central California; USBC in Fresno and the Youth will be in Oroville/Yuba City. En-tries will be available soon. Check with your bowling centers, local associations, or the state website at calusbc.com. The California BVL Singles has a new title. It is now the California USBC Helen Duval Veterans Tour-nament. We encourage all local associations to hold a BVL tournament and send your winners to the roll-off being held in Citrus Heights at Fireside Lanes which is within the Greater Sacramen-to USBC. Tournament date is March 26, 2011 with two squads Noon and 3:30. This is a certified event so make sure the bowlers your associ-ation sends have a 2010-2011 USBC membership.

We do plan to attend and visit as many local associa-tion meetings and events as possible. We have paid a visit to the Southern L.A. County USBC and attended both Nor Cal and Southern CA Propri-etors annual meetings. More visits have been scheduled.

Until next time, let’s keep the ball rolling because the

BOWLING FOR HEALTH Pioneer Medical Group and Cal Bowl has paired up to of-fer a super bowling program of 16 weeks, starting Friday 1 p.m. December 3 for Mixed Fours, ages 50 and up. The cost is only $50 for the entire program (that equals $3.13 per bowler) and it’s filling fast. There’s still openings for teams and individuals but it’s limited to 80 bowlers so sign up now. It’s really super that Pioneer Medical Group acknowledges bowling for the great sport it is for senior health and great that Cal Bowl has provided the fa-cilities at a bargain cost to sup-port the project.

MONTCLAIR—In our return to popular Bowlium Lanes 244 entrants participated in a semi tough shot this week, and the cut scores were a +44 for the men and +1 for the women. This week, our three Super Seniors added to the board were Leo Tartamella (+40), Pedro Benitez(+35) for the men and Bobbie McCollum(-11) for the women. That would give us 56 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week.

From all qualifying squads our top qualifier for the men was James Samson with a +151, and for the women it was Leslie Gabriel with a +38. Each will get paid entries into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed overall draws the Match Series, and this week it was worth $1478. The top seed drew a 397 this week, and that score was bowled by one of the nice people and are weekly photographer Ely Cruz. He was quite happy and surprised when he heard his name announced for that score, bowling bad sometimes pays off for you-)) Next week at Cal Bowl, we will estimate the Match Series at $1200 for the big Thanksgiving event. For the 3-6-9 qualifying this week, there were a lot that qualified for the roll-off. The final person standing after all the rounds was Fred Go who would go for the $2,100 pot. He missed on his second shot and re-ceived a $50 consolation. We will add another $100 at Cal Bowl for total of $2200.

In the doubles this week, we had 195 groups get into the dou-bles, with 23 spots paid out. The top prize this week went to Robert Lim and Teddy Villaroman with a 1384 for $180. In 2nd place, it was Dom La Guardia and Victor Paolucci with a 1359 for $160, they tied with Vuong Do and Vic-tor Paolucci who had a 1369 and would get $160. The low to cash

53 bowlers took to the floor in the semis this week we saw Jason Jones lead the field with a +111 to sit out and bowl for the title. Adrian Pelayo came in second at +105 and he would sit out the first round. It took a +42 for the men and a + 8 for the women. To make the top 16 Single elims.

This week, our top seed Jones had the honor of drawing the match game worth $3350 and he would draw a 155 this week. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had 3 bowlers that each bowled that score, they were; Steven Au, Victor Fabian, and Mi-chael Benavides. They would each get $1116 for that score. We will estimate the pot at $3000 at Cal Bowl this week. This week we had five new bowlers join us, and no returning member. Let’s welcome these new bowlers to the club, Samantha James, Timothy Lam-beth, Kim Luu, Michael Curl, and Victoria Toro. We’re glad to see 1 of the new bowlers Ms.Luu make the semi-finals in their first time bowling.

This would bring us to our Match Play finals now. In the first round, the seven losers were Kim Luu, Jason Buenviaje, Da-vid Quon, Eugene Haynes, Jam-escart Alarcio, Leo “Horseman” Tartamella, and Mark Andrews. They would each receive checks of $107.50 each. In the second round, the losers were Beth Borci, Sonia Coronado, Anthony Marti-nez, and Ken Morris. Each would get checks of $115. This would get us to down to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $45 (Gino Mansilungan) to a high of $101 (Carlos Castillo) depending on who would win. In the third round we saw Ger-ald Sanchez (16th seed) bowling

Carlos Castillo (11th seed). In this match, Carlos would get the better of Gerald with a 194 to 185 finish. In the other match we saw Gino Mansilungan (7th seed) bowling Adrian Pelayo (2nd seed). In this match, Adrian would get the bet-ter of Gino in this match with a 234 to 228 final score. Gino and Gerald finished in fourth and fifth places getting checks for $125 each. Our semi-final match this week was on lanes three and four. We had our 2nd and 11th seeds into the top 16 bowling each other. In our horses this week we would see Adrian paying $67 and Car-los paying $101 if they win their match. In this match, we would see both bowlers struggle big time, as the pair they were bowl-ing on was very tough. It seemed neither bowler could find it dur-ing the match as they kept close for scratch score through the first 8 frames. Adrian would open in the last 2 frames to give an open-ing to Carlos as all he would need in the 10th frame was a double. Carlos would get the first strike in the 10th but leave the 6-10 on the second shot. The final score was 121/176 for Adrian to a 138/167 for Carlos. For those lucky “inves-tors” that had Adrian as a horse, he paid $67. Carlos finished in third place and received $215.

The title game is set and was on lanes seven and eight this week. Jason being the top seed elected to start the match first. Jason would start with a double while Adrian open the first two frames giv-ing Jason a 20 pin lead after the second frame. Jason would have only have to open thru the first six frames while Adrian struggled to find the shot on this pair until the 6th frame. After 6 frames Ja-son was in the lead by 28 pins. Jason would not look back from that point as Adrain could not find the line to get strikes and he would

finish with a 142/187 but Jason would finish with a 168/216 for his first ABTA win. This would be Jason’s first win in the ABTA; he would take home $1000 for first place and another $425 in cash and carry giving him a total of $1,425. Adrian would finish in second place for $500.

Champion Jason Jones is from Covina and used a Vibe drilled by Mike Wahl. He is engaged to ABTA Member Megan Ka-vanaugh. The Moreno Valley DOLLS Vault Into

First Place by Frank Weiler

MORENO VALLEY—The “BATTLE OF THE SEXES” continues at Moreno Valley Bowl. GUYS versus DOLLS.

With ten weeks in the books, the Moreno Valley Dolls have moved into first place in the Wednesday Scratch Challenge League. They are 4.5 points ahead. If the dolls stay put for two more weeks they will be block one winners. WOW, an all woman team beating the guys, in a scratch league.

AMANDA MILBURN continues to pace the dolls with a 227 average. An aver-age that would set a new high for Citrus Belt ladies. The cur-rent record is 226.

Amanda’s teammates are doing pretty well to, with KATHY ALLEN averaging

221 and DENISE BLACK-MON 214. Blackmon bowled 299 recently, posting the high-est game in the league for a lady.

My friend RON BON-NEAU led his team into third place last week and he looks forward to challenging the dolls for first. Like any guy, Ron would love to spank the dolls in a position round show down. Ron told me that competing against an all lady team has added excitement to the league. He also wants to thank the BOWLING NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt bowlers.

Team Predicts Victory!

Try To Beat Us! by Frank Weiler

MURRIETA — “THEY” predict Victory. They say they will win Block Two and the 640 Scratch League cham-pionship, at Cal Oaks Bowl. They say, “try to stop us.”

Who are these guys? Why are they so confident?

“THEY” are Team Eight: “TRACKING THE BOWL-ING NEWS.NET”. They are confident because they are tal-ented, are great bowlers, and can back up what they say.

So the gauntlet is down. Who will challenge them? How will the rest of the league react to what “THEY” say?

I am sure the rest of the league could care less what “THEY” say.

Bowlers of the caliber of JIM MURTISHAW, JERRY DeYAGER, and RYNE CUN-NINGHAM feel that their teams will prevail and have no fear of team number eight. Why should these high rollers fear team eight, when they av-erage 240 per game?

Stay tuned over the next few months to find out how “THEY” do. Thanks BOWL-ING NEWS for telling the world what is going on in the Citrus Belt.

OHIO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT IS THE ALBERTA E. CROWE STAR OF TOMORROW

ARLINGTON, Texas – Nicole Mosesso of Centerville, Ohio, has been selected the 2011 Alberta E. Crowe Star of Tomorrow. The award is presented annually by the United States Bowling Con-gress to a female high school senior or college student who competes in the sport of bowling.

“It’s definitely a great honor,” Mosesso said. “When I first applied, I saw previous winners such as Liz Johnson and Diandra Asbaty. To be in that company is something I could never have imagined.”

Mosesso is a senior at Centerville High School, where she carries a 4.15 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and has made the dean’s list for six semesters.

This past summer, she volunteered as a physical therapist assistant at an outpatient rehabilitation therapy clinic. She said the experience confirmed her desire to pursue a career in physical therapy.

“Speaking with each patient was the best part,” Mosesso said. “I could tell that having someone by their side to talk to and laugh with was making a difference. It motivated them to put forth their best effort.”

Mosesso started bowling when she was eight. She used to watch her father when he was bowling in a league, and she also had the chance to watch her brother, who is five years older, compete in high school. She knew from watching her brother that she had to bowl for her high school team.

She is in her fourth season on the Centerville High School bowling team and has been the team’s most valuable player the last two seasons. The Elks reached the state tournament each of the last three seasons, winning the state title in 2007-08, placing third in 2008-09 and ninth last season.

Mosesso was named the Greater Western Ohio Conference Bowler of the Year in 2008-09 and was first-team all-conference the last two seasons.

Jeffrey Flack, the women’s bowling coach at Wright State University, has coached Mosesso for the last nine years, and in his recommendation letter, said she has “demonstrated sportsmanship, teamwork and a strong work ethic at every level of her bowling career.”

“When it comes to wanting to win, no one has more desire than Nicole, yet she always funnels her passion in a positive manner,” Flack said. “She constantly demonstrates fairness, courtesy and grace, in both winning and losing. When it comes to teamwork, Nicole is the consummate team player. Her focus always is on the results of her team rather than personal goals.”

Mosesso will graduate from Centerville High School in the spring. She is looking at colleges that have a physical therapy program and a bowling program.

“I want to bowl in college,” she said. “Ever since I became involved in bowling, I’ve wanted to go to the next level and bowl collegiately.”

The Alberta E. Crowe Star of Tomorrow Award is named in honor of the seven-term president of the Women’s International Bowling Congress. The award is presented annually to a female USBC member who exhibits star qualities such as distinguished bowling performances on the state and national levels, academic achievement, and extracurricular and community involvement.

For being named the Alberta E. Crowe Star of Tomorrow, Mosesso receives a $6,000 scholar-ship that will be presented at the annual USBC Convention. This year’s convention is scheduled for June 29-July 1 at the Gaylord Texan hotel in Grapevine, Texas.

Sysco in Commanding Lead Vernon Adams Perfect

by Aimee GomezDOWNEY—Sysco got off to an early lead, and while they dropped the second game by a mark,

walked away from the evening with four wins over Bowlers Depot. They owed much, but not all, of their success to evening leader Vernon Adams 279-215-300/794. Also pitching in were Harry Wong 224-246-246/716, Charlie Kinstler 227-215-201/643 and Paul Barraco 228-211/621. Raul Rosales 246-205-234/685 and Jeff Carr 259-224/655 did well for Bowlers Depot, but the team only got close that second game. Sysco is in first with fourteen wins.

David Yamauchi led the next pair 255-213-224/692, followed by Junior Amateur Tour teammate Larry Campbell 223-233/655. Unfortunately, this was only good enough for a third game win by ten over Brylaw Accounting, who moved into second place with four wins on the evening and eleven total. Larry Stephens 209-268/650, Charles Zelaya 209-279/649 and Billy Myers Jr. 266/623 led Brylaw.

Katie Jake’s Bar and Grill used Jon Brandon 267-268/687, Kevin Yamauchi 242-249/683 and Kevin Valmonte 225-202/601 to take four from Linder Insurance’s Keith Klagge 204-267/652 and Gary Duran 229-247/650. After they dropped the first game by twenty three, they came back with a vengeance.

Tom Jackson led Tifco 206-237/633 and got some help from Devron Lindsey 211-217/608, as they took 3.5 from Herzog Insurance, tying the third game. Sub Steve Key led Herzog and posted the only sixer for the team, 214-222-210/645.

Pro Approach took three from Threadworks by winning the second game by enough sticks to hold on to totals. Alex Garcia 214-225-235/674 led Pro Approach while Eric Snow 207-224-233/664 led Threadworks.

Storm Products took four games from Clyde’s Video Game. They dropped the first game by a couple of marks, and then never looked back. Paul Varela 215-276-237/728 and Ramon Torres 219-269/677 led Storm, while Dave Bartlett put up the only six for Clyde’s, 268/647.

ABTA took three from Key Container in spite of the only six coming from Key Container’s Dar-rion Tipton, 205-234/600.

Zavala’s Taquerias’ sub Nick Tchir 279-202/658, Greg Neuer 208-246/636 and Jeff Garri-son 221/608 led the way to three wins over Herbert Jones 211-200-278/689 and Mark Fisser 237-214/643.

CongratulationsVernon Adams

A Real Junior Bowler of Orange Countyby Joy McGregor

ANAHEIM—If you are like the majority, you are totally over “reality” shows. This article depicts a “normal” albeit, very tal-ented, young man. This is Ryan Barnes’ story and his passion for bowling!

Ryan is a typical teenager living in South Orange County al-though as you read, you realize he is anything but typical in that he actively pursues his ‘other’ loves...soccer, jet skiing and video production/editing. He is in the 10th grade at Dana Hills High and maintains a 3.0 grade point average. He also played strings (violin & base) in the orchestra program for five years.

His ‘second’ love is in video production and editing and has produced several video’s which air daily on You Tube and other internet sites. He recently won a Multimedia Award from KOCE at the 43rd California Student Media Festival for “Best Math-ematics -Cracking Fractions.” He was also the recipient of an award from the CUSD for the same video.

Ryan also volunteers in his “free time” not only teaching youth socccer via LNYSA (Laguna Niguel Youth Soccer Assn.) but, working many park events (Bunny Blast) for the Laguna Niguel Parks & Recreation. I’m exhausted!

Ryan bowls league exclusively at Saddleback Lanes and his bowling accolades are many. He has earned many, many league awards but most impressive are the following:

1st Place OCUSBC BVL Youth Singles, Div. G, (1-24-10) at Linbrook Bowl which qualified him to compete in the CAUSBC BVL State Championships, Div. E, (4-10-10) at Yorba Linda Bowl. He represented Orange County well taking First Place honors!

He and his doubles partner, Sam Longo, won the OCUSBC Youth Tournament in the 199 & under Division, (2-27-10) at Val-ley View Lanes. Ryan managed to also win 1st Place Singles in the 99 & under Division, (2-28-10) at Irvine Lanes and his team (Saddleback Pin Heads) in the 399 & under Division, captured 1st Place. And, his handicapped score of 2273 took All Events. Great bowling weekend!

On March 21, 2010, Ryan’s participation in the USBC Pepsi Youth District Tournament in Vista, Ca. advanced Ryan to com-pete at the USBC Pepsi Youth State Finals May 1st and 2nd, 2010 contested at Fountain Bowl where he placed 80th in a field of 220. Impressive!! The 2010 State Youth Championships (North County) held in Oceanside and Vista on July 18-25, saw Ryan and his doubles partner, Sam Longo, secure a 3rd place finish in Div. E and Ryan a 5th place standing in the State Duke Event.

Cash awards are prohibited for the youth so all the winning events are awarded in the form of USBC scholarships. Ryan has won over $250 in scholarships in the past year and a half. Ryan is a prime example of the expert training received as a result of his involvement in our fine Youth Programs being conducted in all Orange County centers. Check your favorite center and get involved!!!

Ryan is supported by his mom and dad as well as older sib-lings, brother, Adrian and sister, Breanna. One of his future plans - to join the OCUSBC as a youth representative has already been achieved as of Nov. 4th. Congratulations! And, his remaining goals - to bowl a 300 game, attend college or trade school and compete on the PBA Tour (not necessarily in that order), he says. With those aspirations and his level head, I’m sure he will ac-complish ALL his dreams.

I’m told that when Ryan is not in the great outdoors or in a bowling center, you can usually find him in front of the TV with an Xbox 360 controller in his hand. Still competing, I see! Good luck in all your endeavors Ryan...

Thank you to Arlene Gagan who heads the Junior Progam at Saddleback Lanes and who is also a Youth Director on the OCUSBC Board of Directors for her research on Ryan and her time and devotion to the youth bowlers of Orange County. I think the Junior Progams are in good hands and kudos to ALL Youth Directors - keep up the excellent work!

Youth Bowler of the YearWALNUT—On Novem-

ber 7, 2010, Tyler Salverda, a Walnut resident and Senior at Walnut High School, was awarded the 2009-2010 San Gabriel Valley USBC Youth Boy Bowler of the Year. SORRY BRANDON GLENDALE — The rule for getting 300’s, 700’s, 800’s on the front page, says that scores must be e-mailed within a week. So, Brandon McGinnes, we can’t mention your 804 series that you shot at Jewel City Bowl on November 12, 2010!

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS by Connie Marchione

HERE’S BOB JONES WITH HIS “WEEKLY” 700 A 719 AT CANOGA PARK

WINNETKA—Not much news here but the usual Bob Jones with another of his “weekly” 700 series. In his last Monday se-nior league at Canoga Park Bowl, Jones rolled games of 224-279-216 for 719. When asked, which frame in his 279 he failed to strike, Jones could not remember but said he also hit another 279 in his Thursday league. But he added that he did not get a 700 series that Thursday.

This writer recalled Jones had hit a coupe of 266s the week before and now with these above 279s, that’s an improvement. One of the days Jones will put strikes together for his first 300.

If you deaf or hearing impaired bowlers out there are tired of reading Jones’ name grabbing the headlines, let this writer knew about your recently hit honor scores or best scores along with proof sheet. Then I will let you have your share here.

JONES TOPS DEAF TRAVEL WITH 750 AT BRUNSWICK COVINA BOWL

COVINA—After So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League’s good bowling session at Del Rio Lanes, the deaf bowlers were back struggling again on the lanes at Brunswick Covina Bowl. In the league’s rare one hour earlier starting time with an offer of lower games cost to finish before 3 PM time for BRC Covina Bowl to have its special event, Bob Jones led the struggling bowlers with a 750 series. Wait, before you say, WOW! Good for Bob be-cause of the above story, that is for 4 games. This 51 years old all deaf and hearing-impaired scratch traveling league bowl 4 games each in most of its last 50 years.

In his sub-par 750, Jones struggled with 176-193-169 before closing with a 212 to top the low honor roll of 5 bowlers. Robert Audette also closed with the day’s high 223 after games of 137-166-192 for 718 to beat 710 of Gorman Low who finished with 198 after 172-169-176. Pablo Yoma rolled a 211 and last ses-sion’s sensational

Glenn Cissna surprised us again when he started with a 206, but struggled with 139 and 143 before closing with a 169.

In this 6 teams league’s first position round session the leader LA City with help of Cissna’s 2nd straight 5 points and team win-ning 4 points beat Jones’ 2nd place S. F. Valley in close contest 11-9. While there were other upsets with Audette’s 4th place Chi-no 12-8 win over Rodger’s 3rd place Mid City and bottom dwell-ing Yoma’s Lake Elsinore in close 11-9 win over Abakumoff’s 5th place Riverside, all 6 teams remained in their positions.

The league thanks Brunswick Covina Bowl’s management and staff for the generous offer and will move on to its next scheduled visit to Action Bowl on Dec. 12.

Note: At this time we are not certain the league will bowl there but if a change is made, it will be notified next week.

Steven Manier Takes Chameleon ChallengeMONTCLAIR—The JAT made their first visit of the year to

the New Bowlium in Montclair last Sunday for the second of three PBA Challenge events. The house chose the Chameleon pattern as it tends to play tough at this house. Kevin Jones came out attacking the tough pattern with a tight track line and led qualifying at +91. Close behind him was Brandon Kraye swing-ing a Mission at +27 and Gary Smith pointing the corner at -3. Low to qualify was last tournament’s champion Stevn Roderick at -62. In the quarterfinals, Kevin Jones, Wesley Low and Steven Manier swept into the semifinals while Nicole Shepard needed all three games to advance. Steven Manier blasted games of 246-255 to advance to the finals while Kevin Jones took game 1 of his match, but an open in the 10th frame of game 2 opened the door for Wesley Low to advance to the championship match. In the finals, Wesley came out striking, wearing out the gutter with his T-Zone and taking game one 214-179. Steven Manier got lined up with his Hy-Road playing a fall-back type shot and took games two and three 210-168 and 215-179 for his first JAT Open Division title. Log onto YouTube and search for Junior Ama-teur Tour to see highlights of this event and all other JAT events. Congratulations Steven!JAT Christmas Team Championship Is Up Next

Our next tournament isn’t for a month- but it’s our first-ever JAT Team Championship. Teams must consist of one Farm Club, one Open Division and two Adult bowlers to make a four-man team. The format will be all-baker with each bowler taking turns anchoring their team. Start getting together your teams for this event- it should be a fun way to kick off the holidays at Cal Bowl. If you have any questions, e-mail me at [email protected]. See you all on December 19th.

TEAM USA EXPERIENCE LEAGUE CONCEPT CATCHING ON

ARLINGTON, Texas – When the United States Bowling Con-

gress instituted its Team USA Experience league concept this year as a new opportunity for bowlers to test their skills on more chal-lenging lane conditions, few bowling centers embraced the chal-lenge more fervently than Mel’s Lone Star Lanes in Georgetown, Texas.

Mel’s hosts three Team USA Experience leagues that attract more than 60 bowlers each week, and if you think they are all scratch bowlers polishing their skills for the next Professional Bowlers As-sociation Regional or scratch sweeper, you’re in for a surprise.

The bowlers taking the Team USA Experience challenge at Mel’s are youth bowlers who drive from more than 30 miles away. They are 150-average bowlers just looking to take their games to the next level. And they are USBC Silver coaches looking to practice the skills they preach.

“Not all of these bowlers are your typical scratch bowlers,” says Doug Patton, general manager of Mel’s Lone Star Lanes. “They range in average from probably 150 or so up to a couple of regional pros. I believe that these leagues will grow because the bowlers who are stepping up to the challenge are enjoying the experience.”

Team USA Experience leagues offer 12 World Tenpin Bowling Association lane patterns, each one named after an Olympic city and ranging in length from 33 feet (Sydney) to 47 feet (Paris). They are the same lane patterns that stars such as reigning world champions Bill O’Neill and Stefanie Nation face in international competitions such as the World Championships.

“Taking on these types of conditions can really help bowlers learn more about their games,” Team USA head coach Rod Ross said in July when the league concept was announced. “Our teams have put in a lot of work to learn the nuances of the patterns and that has helped us achieve the success we have had at the international level.”

If the bowlers at Mel’s are any indication, the itch Team USA members have to put their skills to the ultimate test is catching on.

“The youth bowlers in our area actually begged to have a Team USA Experience league for them,” says James Smalls, a USBC Sil-ver coach who bowls one of the Team USA Experience leagues at Mel’s. “The improvement in the youth that bowl the Team USA league is quite evident. I dare say that most of these kids have im-proved their house shot averages by 10 pins.”

Of the three Team USA Experience leagues that Mel’s offers each week, two are adult leagues while the other is open to both youth and adult bowlers. Bowlers bowl four games instead of the traditional three and face a different pattern every week.

“We give the bowlers the schedule of patterns and information on each of them on the first night of league,” Patton explains. “That way they can get mentally prepared before starting practice each week. The response has been favorable because there are a lot of patterns to choose from.”

Smalls said the wide variety of patterns challenges bowlers to adopt an equally wide range of ways to play the lanes and is one of the most beneficial aspects of the Team USA Experience league concept.

“On a house shot you can get away with playing the same line for most of the series,” Smalls says. “But on a Team USA pattern you must be prepared to change lines or use different wrist posi-tions.”

Nation, who mastered the 34-foot Stockholm pattern at the 2009 World Women’s Championships in Las Vegas last year to win the singles gold medal, advises that bowlers keep it simple and be open-minded.

“It’s best to try and keep things simple and see what the condi-tion is giving you instead of trying to make things happen,” she says. “The transition on these patterns is a little tricky since they are playable from different angles. Because the transition isn’t as clear, they tend to be more challenging.”

USBC ANNOUNCES 2009-10 NATIONAL HIGH AVERAGE WINNERSARLINGTON, Texas – Rebekah Diers and Jim Thomas are the 2009-10 United

States Bowling Congress Sport Bowling High Average Award winners in the adult divisions, while Brittni Hamilton and Aaron Lorincz took honors in the youth divi-sions.

Hamilton, 20, of Amherst, N.Y., is a Junior Team USA member who won the 2010 USBC Junior Gold Championships in July. In her Monday Youth PBA Sport Scholarship league at Clover Lanes, she averaged 203 over 48 games to take na-tional honors in the Youth Female division.

“Bowling on Sport shots in tournaments all over the world definitely helped give me an advantage when bowling this summer,” Hamilton said. “It’s such a pres-tigious award that I am honored to receive. It shows me that all of my hard work paid off, and it’s a great feeling.”

Hamilton, who attends Vanderbilt University, started bowling on Sport condi-tions when she was 13. She credits her coach, Kelvin Parker, and her ball driller, Dave Werner, saying they “spent countless hours with me this summer” to help her be successful.

In the Youth Male division, Lorincz, 21, of Belleville, Mich., averaged 209 over 48 games in the SU Ottman Jr. PBA league at Sunnybrook Lanes. He started bowling at age 12 and joined his first Sport league in 2008. He said he worked on various techniques, such as hand position and ball speed, so he could adapt to the various Sport conditions.

“It was an award that I certainly strived for all summer,” Lorincz said. “I knew it was within my skill level to achieve, but to perform at this level, throughout the entire season, was very gratifying.”

Diers, 22, of Troy, Ill., was the top performer in the Adult Female division with a 210 average over 57 games in the PBA Experience Trio league at Stars & Strikes Lanes. She started bowling at age 6 and competed on Sport conditions in Junior Gold competition and during her collegiate career at McKendree University. But the PBA Experience Trio league was the first time she competed in a Sport league.

“Throughout my college career I grew as a bowler and learned a lot about the sport,” said Diers, who added she can’t stress enough the importance of quality practice time and coaching. “I think the knowledge I gained during this point in my career really helped me excel on the Sport shots.”

Diers was the 2008 USBC Youth Open All-Events champion and participated in the 2009 Bowling’s Clash of Champions, where she reached the championship match before falling to PBA champion and USBC spokesperson Chris Barnes. She also was a two-time first-team collegiate All-American and Most Valuable Player at the 2007 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships.

The Adult Male winner, Thomas, 36, of Endwell, N.Y., averaged 226 in 75 games in the PBA Experience league at Midway Lanes. He started bowling at age 11 and has bowled in Sport leagues for nearly a decade. He said a key element to his success was his equipment as he was able to match his bowling balls to the condi-tions “quite well for the majority of the year. It gave me the ability to play parts of the lane that were comfortable to me.”

Thomas has won more than 30 tournaments in addition to many local honors and awards. He has participated in three U.S. Opens, with a high finish of 61st in 2009, and the USBC Masters.

“I would say that this just might be the biggest award I have ever received,” Thomas said. “With the many thousands of participants that compete in such leagues, it doesn’t seem like something that can actually happen. It’s quite a shock.”

To be eligible for the Sport Bowling National High Average Award, competi-tors must have bowled a minimum of 48 games in a certified Sport Bowling league during the 2009-10 season.

National Standard High Average and High Series AwardsThe USBC 2009-10 National Standard High Average and High Series Awards

also have been determined. In the high series category, three bowlers threw a 900 series to tie in the Adult

Male division. Chris Aker of Winnemucca, Nev., accomplished the feat during the Friday Night Mixers league on Oct. 30, 2009, at Spare Time Bowling Center, and three days later Andrew Teall of Medford, N.J., rolled a 900 series during the Mon-day Night Invitational at Medford Lanes. Andrew Mank of Belleville, Mich., had his perfect series on March 18, 2010, during the Thursday Men 6:30 p.m. Handicap league at Bel-Air Bowl.

Bryanna Caldwell of Tucson, Ariz., had the top series for Adult Female with 861 (265, 300, 296) that was rolled at the Don Loegering Memorial on Oct. 15, 2009 at Summit Lanes.

In the youth divisions, Adrian Anderson of Roseburg, Ore., had an 878 (300, 289, 289) on Feb. 22, 1010, in the Monday Teens at Ten Down Bowling & Enter-tainment to take the Youth Male award. Junior Team USA member Jenn Boisselle of Brandon, Fla., took the Youth Female honor with an 848 (279, 300, 269) in the UCF Club at Boardwalk Entertainment Center on Nov. 4, 2009.

In the adult category for Standard high average, Michael Handelin of Deer Park, Wash., averaged 252 in the Commercial League at Skyway Lanes to win the Adult Male award. Jodi Musto of Schenectady, N.Y., had a 243 average in the Thursday Nite Classic league at Town N’Country Lanes to lead all women.

Justin Tan of Flower Mound, Texas, averaged 239 in the Saturday Youth Major at AMF Lewisville Lanes to be the Youth Male winner, and Lizabeth Kuhlkin of Schenectady, N.Y., was the Youth Female winner with a 228 average while bowling in the Sportsman’s AM Jr/Major league at Sportsman’s Bowl.
