Carson St., Lakewood, CA 90712 NORTH BRUNSWICK— Defeating Professional Bowl- ers Association Player of the Year contenders Norm Duke and Chris Barnes in the step- ladder finals, Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, won his second career major in win- ning the 66th Lumber Liqui- dators U.S. Open Sunday at Brunswick Zone Carolier. It was Scroggin’s sixth ca- reer PBA Tour title; he won the 2005 United States Bowl- ing Congress Masters for his first major victory also defeating Duke. By beating Duke and Barnes, Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, earns 2008-09 PBA Player of the Year honors. Scroggins defeated PBA Hall of Famer Duke 191-173 in the championship match to win the $100,000 first prize and three-year Lumber Liqui- dators PBA Tour exemption. “It’s so satisfying to win it because it’s such a grind,” Scroggins said. “I just wanted to go out and bowl a decent game. Normally you’re going to have to throw a 220 or 230 so it was just karma, I guess, that I was able to beat Norm and Chris. Scroggins Wins 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open for Second Career Major Mike Scroggins U.S.Open Champion “I’m a believer in you have to beat the best to be best and I consider Norm to be one of the best,” Scroggins added. In the semi-final match, Scroggins defeated Chris Barnes 200-199, who had a chance to repeat as Player of the Year with a victory. Barnes could have won the match with a strike on the first ball of the 10th frame but left a solid 8 pin. Needing a strike on his fill ball to tie the match, Barnes left a 10 pin. “I threw my best shot,” said Barnes who had eight televi- sion appearances this season and two wins to get back into the Player of the Year race. “I’ve put it in perspective-- things work out the way they work out, but I’m just thank- ful to be in this position. Four weeks ago I didn’t think I would have a shot at Player of the Year.” Duke, who ranks tied for fifth in all-time career PBA Tour titles with 32, was trying to become the first bowler to win back-to-back U.S. Opens since Dave Husted accom- plished the feat in 1995-96. Duke was Player of the Year in 1994 and 2000. He left a 4-6- 7-10 split in the third frame CERRITOS—Noel Sicat won his first Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at AMF Cerritos Lanes on Sat- urday, March 28, 2009 during our 3-game Beat-the-Board tournament. Noel bowled in our 5PM squad and shot games of 238, 297 and 279 with handicap for a series total of 814 and the $600 1st place prize plus $1200 from the Pro- gressive Pot. Glenn Mabilan- gan came in second shooting a real fine 810 with handicap and received a check for $325. John Occhipinti came in third shooting an 804 and received $165. Low to cash was +131. John Occhipinti was the winner of the Senior Sweeper with an 804. Mike Moore was the winner of the 2-Game Sweeper with a 560. Our newest champion, Noel Sicat, 40, is a chef for Cal State Fullerton. He is married to Josie, and has one daughter, Daniella Joy who is 6. Noel has been bowling for about two years and sports a high game of 269 and high se- ries of 723. Californian Haggerty Earns USBC David Dahms Coach of the Year Award ARLINGTON—Debbie Haggerty, who has been in- volved in the sport of bowling as a coach for the last 18 years and as a youth director for the last 15 years, has been select- ed to receive the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Da- vid Dahms Coach of the Year Award by the USBC Youth Committee. This prestigious award rec- ognizes a USBC Youth coach who has been actively involved in a USBC Youth program and has demonstrated an outstand- ing commitment to coaching, sportsmanship and knowledge of USBC Youth rules for the last seven or more years. “When told I was selected for this award, it was such a surprise; I was literally speech- less,” Haggerty said. “I’ve al- ways thought this award was the epitome of recognition knowing what kind of a person David Dahms was and the vi- sion he had for our sport.” Haggerty, of Weimar, Ca- lif., currently has 225 bowlers in her Fireside Lanes Youth Program, several of whom are Junior Gold members. She has the only Junior Gold league in the Sacramento area and also manages several local and area tournaments. She grew up around the sport, as her mother was a cer- tified coach and her father was a high-average bowler. Hag- gerty became involved with coaching after her son, P.J., began showing interest in the sport at age 2. P.J. would even- tually become a three-year member of Junior Team USA. “I’ve been fortunate to have had some outstanding mentors guiding me along the way; Jack Thomas, Mary Lynly, Barbara Metzinger, Tink Wasina and Glenn Carl- son to name a few,” Haggerty said. “Having a son pursue his dreams and a husband who supported us every step of the way has helped me to become the coach I am today.” Haggerty, who is on the Greater Sacramento Area USBC Youth Committee, has had approximately 50 coaches certified through her coach- ing program and national pro- grams, and said that “being able to help develop coaches who are willing to give of themselves to help others is truly satisfying.” Haggerty will be recog- nized at the USBC Convention in Reno this spring. continued on page 11 Former Bowling News Editor Bob Johnson & Johnny Petraglia Earn BWAA’s Highest Honors CHICAGO—Bob Johnson of Chicago has been selected as winner of the 2009 Bowl- ing Writers Association of America Hall of Fame Award in recognition of his career of distinguished contributions to bowling journalism. 2010 Women’s Championship To Take Place in One of America’s Safest Cities

ARLINGTON, Texas—With its dramatic mountains, 305 days of sunshine a year and connections to the historic Old West, the city of El Paso, Texas, is not just one of the most enchanting destinations in the country, it’s also one of the safest.

El Paso, which will host the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships, is routinely ranked as one of the safest cities in America by CQ Press, a research company known as a national source of impartial state and city ranking information.

Among cities with a population of 500,000 or more, El Paso was recently ranked the third safest city in the country. In fact, since 2004, El Paso has been ranked either second or third in the annual report.

Despite news reports of violence in neighboring Juarez, Mex-ico, the city of El Paso has reported no crimes against tourists.

“El Paso has been chosen one of America’s safest cities for the fifth consecutive year,” said Bill Blaziek, General Manager of the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Our commu-nity life has not been altered due to the problems in neighboring Juarez and there has been no crimes reported against tourists in our community or in Juarez. We are virtually divorced from the violent activity in Juarez; meaning there has been no spill-over into El Paso.”

Bowlers visiting El Paso next year should expect to enjoy the city’s attractions, shopping, fine dining and getting to know the culture of the sixth largest city in Texas. Competitors will also be introduced to several new enhancements to the Women’s Cham-pionships.

The event, which has a history that dates to 1916, will consist of three new average-based divisions named Diamond, Ruby and Sapphire, and competition will be contested using 100 percent handicap.

The Diamond Division will be made up of bowlers with aver-ages of 180 and higher, with handicap based on 220. The Ruby Division pits bowlers with averages from 150-179 against each other, with handicap based on 180, while the Sapphire Division is for bowlers with an average of 149 and below, with handicap based on 150.

Also starting in El Paso, the Women’s Championships will be contested in a stadium setting. Lanes will be specially construct-ed inside the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center, along with state-of-the-art scoreboard displays and vendors.

Velarde is Perfect at Cerritos—Greg Velarde fired a perfect game in the ABTA Cerritos Event and is congratulated by ABTA Directors Deborah Sanders (left) and his Lovely wife Gina who also had a perfect game in the ABTA in February at Cal Bowl. He will receive special Awards in our Annual Las Vegas Awards Party at the South Point in July.

Danny Eguilos Stars at Cerritos Lanes and Wins First Title (L-R) Tim Austin (runnerup) $500 Danny Eguilis (Champion ) $1,400, Imelda Dumpit (Pete’s Lovely wife), Pete Dumpit (3rd place) and Bob Smith ABTA Tournament Director.

Vic Santos is the Man at Cerritos $3,500 Match Game—Gina Velarde (left ) and Deborah Sanders (right) congratulate Vic San-tos on his sweet $3,500 win as his fine game of 277 was drawn by Champion Danny Eguilos to the total of $3,500. This was the 2nd highest score ever to win the Match Game in our History and Vic is one of the Good Guys and Most Deserving!

CERRITOS—Danny Egui-los, one of our most avid ABTA supporters finally got his first win at Super Scoring Cerritos Lanes as he made a big come-back in the title game to win with a stong finish to edge Tim Austin for the title.

Danny was not the only bowler performing well at Cerritos. We saw Greg Ve-larde bowl a perfect game in the 2:30 PM Squad. Vic San-tos had a 277 game which was drawn for the Match Game for a sweet $3,500.

The scoring was very good (high) and it took a huge +115 (men) and + 82 for the ladies. Super Seniors added to the board were Ellen Scoggins, Ping Tubera, and Tom Dahl. A turnout of 167 bowlers saw 52 Semifinalists take the floor, of which all would cash. The top 16 advanced to the single elim finals with 3 women min guar-anteed to the top 16.

The bowlers took the floor and the scoring was quite con-tentious with Danny Eguilos leading the field with a huge +205. Iin second place was David Nguyen +160.

Danny will sit out and bowl for the title and David to en-ter into the second round of the top 16 finals. It took men +103 and Women +58 (3 Guar-anteed) to make the top 16.

The first round went off. Curt Snyder, Glen Matsumoto, Sonia Coronado, Alex Reyes, David Norris, Jerry Fagan, and Marife Catalasan lose out.

They received checks of $100 each in 10-16th places.

In round two Pete Dumpit bested Deb Bradley. Tim Aus-tin got to Guy Clear. David Nguyen downed Eric Perez, and Jirades H, bested Jenni-fer Grant. Losers round two got checks of $110 in 6-9th places.

Round three had Dumpit step up and down Jirades H. in a big game 279-254. Austin got to Nguyen 233-222. The losers were 4th and 5th and $125 with Dumpit and Austin to meet for the right to bowl Eguilos for the title. In this game it was contentious to say the least. Dumpit needing a strike for a tie left the bucket and Austin wins it 262-258. Pete was 3rd with fine bowl-ing and Austin off to the title game vs Eguilos. Pete bowled very well.

The title game was on. Danny elected to lead off and did so with a strike. But Tim answered with a double and after Danny opened in frames 4-5 and after Tim had another double in frames 4-5 it looked like the end for Danny! Instead of the paramedics, he was headed for the hearse.

But folks, strange things do happen. Tim opened in the 6th and Danny started his run striking in frames 6-7-8-9. Now Tim would have to strike to make him mark, or if he doubled Danny would need to double. Well Tim whifffed the 3-6-10 and Danny went off

the sheet for all three in the 10th for a 7 bagger. Tim’s fate was doomed as Danny came from way back to win his first ABTA title in a great finish. Finale is Danny 233/256- Tim 193/233.

Danny is one of the good guys and a man well liked by all. He is a happy person with a great sense of humor and a fine family man. He took home a nice $1,400 to his pretty wife Mercy. Congrats Danny!

Tim Austin almost got there and if not for Danny’s super finish he would have won this one. Nice bowling Tim.

Great Bowling by Pete Dumpit, also who could have been our winner and the same for Jirades and David Nguyen.

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Ricky Huang +215 (his high series). Margie Coronado +135 led the ladies +97. They will get paid entries for the fine bowling.

The Doubles were headed by Ricky Huang and Angel Chau 1519 $140. Rhuel San-chez and Gerald Sanchez in 2nd 1513 $120. We paid 20 places and $1,260 in the dou-bles

The Match Game was matched at Cerritos as Egui-los drew a high 277 and guess what? Yes, it was hit by one of the nicer Guys around, Vic Santos. He gladly claimed the $3,500 Pot! Vic was buying the beer. The pot is still esti-mated at $1,900 this Saturday at West Covina Lanes with our

$500 carryover. The Match Series was NOT

Matched at Cerritos as Huang drew a 471 and this $2.00 pot has a carryover of $1,146. We will estimate it to go for $1,550 at West Covina and for $2.00, you can’t top that!

The 3-6-9 Pot was not hit this week after two weeks of cash doled out for a total of $3,000. The 3-6-9 is still $600 this Saturday per our backup cash.

The weekly raffle winners were Danny Guevarra, Deluxe Bag, Greg Kokanour, Hammer Sauce Ball and Andrew Lung won the room for two nights in Las Vegas. Tickets are 6 for $5. We have a weekly drawing for theBag,Ball and Las Vegas Rooms.

Danny Eguilos hails from Norwalk, and an ABTA Blue-blood. He is an ABTA League bowler! He is married to a pretty lady Mercy and they have three boys Chris, Dave and Danny Jr. He used a ball drilled by Mike Wahl at Cer-ritos Lanes.

He thanks Kmel, Ace Cor-dero, the Lim and Alcayde families and the ABTA Staff and his pal Alan Basto who is in the Fils, the ABTA staff, Pete Dumpit also and Cerritos for hosting us.

Tim Austin hails from La Crescenta, He is single and used a Track drilled by Rusty at Mission Bowl.

He is a regular ABTA mem-ber and looks forward to Las Vegas in July.

Pete Dumpit, old time member, hails from West Covina, and married to a pretty lady Imelda. He used a ball drilled by Dave Edis at West Covina Bowl. He thanks Imelda for her support esp in his bowling. He thanks Cer-ritos for the hospitality.

It was so nice to return to Cerritos where the bowlers and fans are so great. There were many new interests as 10 new members signed up with us there.

Special Thanks to Ronnie, Jackie, and Staff. They are just great there and we hope to re-turn on the new schedule.

It is History folks as Danny Eguilos enters the archives as our latest champion at Cerritos Lanes. West Covina Lanes is our host this Saturday with a fair but tougher shot (lower scores).

Check in Early. Squad times are 12:00-1:00-2:30-4:00 & 6:00 PM. Semis at 7:45 PM.

We are at Del Rio Lanes in Downey next week in a two day event. April 18-19 and then back to Linbrook Bowl April 25. Get those Las Vegas rooms early. This year we have great rates and the South Point is a Great place! Until then!!

National Deaf Bowling NewsTwo Deaf Teams Bowl in USBC Tourney

at Las Vegas April 11 & 12by Connie Marchione

LAS VEGAS—The former ABC (1986) Star of Tomorrow Mark Fisser has two all deaf teams scheduled to bowl in the USBC Open Championship on April 11 & 12 at Cashman Center in Las Vegas. Fisser’s two teams are part of the 17,200 teams entered in this annual tournament which is the 2nd largest entries in its 106 years history.

Both teams are comprised of the nation’s best deaf and hear-ing-impaired bowlers from west and east coasts wanting to par-ticipate in this big one. Both teams average well over 1050 and are named West Coast and East Coast. The line-ups are:

WEST COAST EAST COASTMark Fisser John FisherDaniel Vasquez, Jr. Kevin Moran,Mike Scharnow James MorrisRobert Ellison Thomas CramerCarl Malucci Josh PhelpsAll bowlers on West Coast are Californians while East Coast

consists of Ohio’s Fisher and Phelps, Maryland’s Moran and Morris and New York’s Cramer. Young Phelps, still in his twen-ties is a two handed bowler averaging well over 210. As of this time Malucci is tops with 246 average for 72 games. They are scheduled to bowl team event at 2:30 PM on Saturday and Dou-bles and Singles events at 9:30 AM Sunday.

There may be other deaf and hearing-paired teams entered in this tournament and we would like to know if they already bowled or are scheduled to bowl after this date.

Those already bowled, hopefully let me know the scores and how they did. One who already bowled, I know of was hearing-impaired Darrell Stogryn, CA who said it was his 23rd tourna-ment and he did badly with his hearing team last month. I do not know if other deaf bowlers bowled in more USBC tournaments than Stogryn. The late Don I. Miller, Kansas held the deaf record of 28 years of ABC participation.

Fisser said he will reserve for two teams to bowl on Satur-day and Sunday in next year’s USBC Open Championship at Reno. If any other deaf teams wanting to bowl on the same squad with Fisser’s teams, should contact Fisser right way along with the team entry fees which is required for this early reservation. USBC usually honors the teams which bowled in this year’s tour-nament on Saturday and Sunday first until filled.

In the meanwhile, good luck to both teams and try to hit 3000 or better.

NOTE: In last week’s Downey Deaf Classic which Ed Aba-kumoff won, the scores were missed. He rolled games of 201-178-257-216 for 852 and he won with zero handicap. He also collected the pot for his 257 high game.

FORMER INTERCITY DEAF LEAGUE OFFICIAL EARL CHISHOLM PASSED GLENDALE—The old deaf bowlers Intercity Deaf League

which folded up after 40 years of running nine years ago and friends mourn the passing of the league’s long time officer and president Earl Chisholm last Friday from illness. He left his wife Janice, two daughter and one son and several grandchildren who greatly missed him..

Earl and Janice helped the late George Forfar in founding the Intercity league and Earl bowled in all its 40 years and carried it on as its President for the last 20 years until it disbanded for lack of bowlers.

Memorial services was held on Tuesday April 7 at Horizon Community Church n Palmdale. In lieu of any flowers and in honor of his dedication and love of the deaf community, the fam-ily ask that any donations be sent to C.H.A.D. (California Home for Aged Deaf), to fund research to find a cure for prostate cancer and to your local heart association.

Our condolences go to his wife Janice and family.

The Annual Open Meet-ing of the San Gabriel Valley USBC will be held on May 17, 2009 at AMF Beverly Bowl. Please keep in mind as a certified member you are encouraged to attend the meet-ing where you have both voice and vote.

The following positions are open for election; 1st and 3rd Vice President as well as 6 di-rector positions.

The incumbents will be seeking reelection to their po-sitions. If anyone is interested in becoming a board member, please contact the office by May 8, 2009. Delegates to the State and National meeting will be elected at this meeting.

The association will be pre-senting a proposed amendment to increase the Adult dues by $1.00 from $19.00 to $20.00. Reason for the increase? To support the San Gabriel Valley USBC and help defray the cost of the increase of the office rent and the decrease of league bowlers.

STUDIO CITY — Magical and mystical are words oft ut-tered when finishing this marvelous, darling, quite marvel-ous article. We indeed would appreciate getting our hands kissed when our fingers aren’t striking the keys to report on your bowling scores. Yet, the true royalty in this house is our league bowlers, not us lowly serfs.

PINZ ADULTS Cheerio, chaps and chapettes (not a lip balm but a word I just invented). We are in awe of your grandeur and phe-nomenal ability to know down some wood. Your crowns and tiaras await as you chalk up your palms and grace our lanes with your balls. For evidence we present this: 44 Blue: Chris Rowe 210/501, MIke Maxfield 205. Twilighters: Bill Kollmorgen 255/697, Peter Berger 610, Kevin King 236, George Cruz 226, Larry Schneider 223, Michael Holt 221. Kings and Queens: Will Pisnieski 237/618, Tony Ferrari 224/618, Richard Fischer 215/606, Lori Ellett 239, Arlan Kahn 218. Music and Lyrics: Reo Mitchell 220/525, Scott Lifschitz 502. PINZ JUNIORS Aw, indeed, the princes and princesses of the Pinz king-dom have really astonished the center this weekend. They weren’t besieged with the cat calls and antics they would cause any of us to shake. Instead they toppled the pins and had a smile to show for it. With our highest regard, here are your scores: Adult Junior: Damond Taylor 218/611, Max Korn 198/534, Jamie Spector 202/508, Tyler Bensinger 176/496, Martin Korn 177/484, Ethan Bensinger 176. Senior Scratch: Natalie Honda 265/951, Brittlan Halpern 257/933, Max Korn 235/876, Nathan Honda 817, Natalie Kato 801, Treven Goldsmith 226, Scott Englehart 225. Senior Galaxies: Wendy Rowlett 164/443, Jessica Taylor 153/352. Junior Stars: Nicole Martinez 193/471, Nicholas Mar-tinez 95/273. Pee Wee Bumpers: Andrew Parker 89/162, Oran Peretz 83/152, Jasper Harder 73/141, Steven Santiago 65/125.

PINZ SENIORS/LADIES We are now to discuss the grand madams and misters that parade through the alley with regal elegance. They sashay with the glory of many past victories and well thrown games. Yet, they always have an opportunity to acknowledge the desk workers. We thank and applaud you kind seniors and ladies. Here are the scores: Happy Timers: Joel Margolis 497, Ken Burkenheim 186/490, Gas Sumampong 187, Ruth Swick 160/444, Cyn-thia Burkenheim 139/367. Breakfast Club: Lois Altman 443, Pam Vaughan 438, Donna Klein 160, Gerry Jarvis 159, Bernie Filosa 159. Bowler of the Week: We take a journey to Saturday morning, April 4th at 10:03 a.m. The alley is quiet and a junior walks to throw her final shot. The sweep falls and knocks back 0 pins as this bowler has toppled them all. Isn’t it fitting that Nicole Martinez bowled a 193, when her average is 124. Great bowling, Nicole. Sweetness Quote of the Week: I sometimes wonder it two thirds of the globe is covered in red carpet. - Prince Charles

LAKEWOOD — This week our Cal Bowl Bowling Report will be longer since we have some leagues that have two weeks of scores. This is what we call, “Catch Up”. Before we report all those wonderful scores, we want to wish all of you a Happpy Easter.

BOWLING NEWSApril 9, 2009 Page 11

SLAC Youth Travel

by Otha Stubblefield

(All Over) – March Mad-ness is finally over! Oh yeah, that basketball thing is over, too. I was talking about the six week break we just came off because of participation in North LA County and South-ern LA County Association tournaments, three Pepsi dis-trict finals and TNBA. I’m going to have to do some catch up, so please forgive me if I miss something. It is totally unintentional.

Before the break, we bowled at AMF El Dorado Lanes where, as usual, Jeremy Glover led scoring. He shot 934 for four games of 211, 234, 244 and 245. Brent Shern was second with 264-209-216/852, and Keyon Lemus was third with 233-211-200/819. Our other noble 200 shooters were Claudell Redwine 232, John “got the week off” McCullin 220, Brandon Pekins 217 and Devin Seale 204.

The girls made some good progress with Shirniece Beeks 510 and Demenia Redwine 449. Our next session went up the road to AMF Midtown Lanes. The shot is a little tougher, and it showed with Jeremy barely breaking 900 to lead with 234-237-251/902. Brent followed right behind with 247-236/828, and Keyon almost cracked eight with 221-201-208/792.

There were only a few oth-er two hundred games – Ste-ven Alford 226 and Brandon 204. During the break, we had some notable achievements from some our bowlers. Jer-emy (764) and Steven (639) both won the scratch divisions of Pepsi Districts 5 (Buena) and 7 (Cal), respectively.

Jeremy became the third youth bowler to shoot a 300 game at AMF El Dorado on March 21, and Brandon shot a 300 the following day at the Linbrook Jr-Adult JAT. Cory Koyanagi, James Bael, Kyle Goya and Jerome Jordan, Jr. won the TNBA Jr Western Regional Tournament at Cal Bowl, and will represent the West in the Regional roll-off during the TNBA National tournament in Fort Lauder-dale, Fl.

Finally, I want to thank Dayton for stopping by on Saturday, and send my best wishes to Ken, who left a mes-sage last week to invite me to a screening of his newest film. Sorry, Ken, I’ll be out of town, but it was good to hear from you. For those of you keep-ing track of the schedule, we are bowling continuously until May 16. This week, we will be at AMF Cerritos Lanes, starting at 1:30.

and a 4-6-7 split in the ninth frame. “I’ve said it before, it’s more than rolling a good shot,” said

Duke. “On those shots where I had the splits I thought those were two of the best shots of my career. I still feel I bowled well, the breaks just didn’t go my way.

“I’m proud of Mike, he did a great job.” In the opening match former exempt player Richard Wolfe of

rector, executive director and president of Southern Califor-nia Bowling Writers, he was founding editor of Bowling In-dustry International magazine, holding that position for five years. A long-time contributor to Bowlers Journal Interna-tional, he returned to Chicago in 2000 as international editor and was promoted to editor in 2007.

Johnson ranks third all-time in the US Bowler na-tional writing competition with 48 awards and he won another eight awards in the former Professional Bowlers Association writing competi-tion. Johnson also edits BJI’s weekly eBowler electronic newsletter.

Petraglia, who will be in-ducted into the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in early May for his on-the-lanes performances, will be honored by BWAA for what he has done off the lanes.

For more than 30 years, Petraglia has mentored young PBA players as a long-time member of Brunswick Pro Staff and he fought for their rights as a two-term PBA president, when he helped heal wounds during its most turbulent era of lawsuits that threatened to fracture the or-ganization.

In 1993, he served as coach and advisor to Michael J. Fox for his lead role in the bowl-ing-themed movie, Greedy. He spoke on behalf of the sport as a member of the ABC Ambas-sadors staff. He created the Reichert Cup – a bowling ver-sion of golf’s famous Ryder Cup – in honor of long-time Brunswick chief executive and Olympic Games advocate Jack Reichert.

After serving a tour of duty in Vietnam, he worked with a group called “Athletes for Very Important Patients,” vis-iting VA hospitals with other prominent sports stars. He organized and still oversees a special pro-am event for para-lyzed veterans and PBA stars in conjunction with the PBA’s annual visit to North Bruns-wick, N.J. Since 2003, he has been a BVL “teaching pro” staffer, visiting VA centers and again helping hospitalized veterans.

Petraglia’s little-known, behind-the-scenes dedication to veterans across America is even more impressive when you consider that he refuses to fly and travels everywhere by ground transportation.
