Downton Abbey returns for an epic fifth season of drama, romance, comedy and surprises – all centered at the English country estate, Highclere Castle. It’s a deliciously entertaining formula that has made it the highest-rated drama in PBS history.

Follow the plot threads left dangling from last season, including Lady Mary’s courtship contest, Lady Edith’s trials as a secret single mom, Thomas’s scheming against Bates, Robert’s battles against modernity and Tom’s quest to be true to his ideals. Season 5 opens in 1924, with the traditional ways of Downton Abbey being besieged on all fronts.

ach year, when I turn the calendar page to December, I first think where did the year go? And

then I reflect on the accomplishments and highlights of the last year, and possibilities for the next.

When I look back at NET’s year, I’m proud of the high quality, award-winning programming that we’ve provided to all of Nebraska – from PBS, NPR and our amazingly talented local producers.

We started the year with 161 hours of gavel-to-gavel legislative coverage, along with a continued dedication to provide almost half of our schedule in children’s programs. Backyard Farmer – the longest running, locally produced program in the U.S. – guided you in your summer garden. Big Red Wrap-Up, the most interactive Husker football show in the state, connected fans by phone, web and social media. And what would the day be like without the peace and solitude of classical music and news of the day provided by NET Radio?

Recently, we invited you for a glorious visual tour of the state with Nebraska Land & Sky, as well as statewide NET News broadcasts of senatorial and gubernatorial debates. We also examined the effects of returning home from war decades later in Homecoming: The Impact on Nebraska Veterans. NET is the place you find in-depth coverage of national, statewide and local issues,

history, science, culture, along with high school and collegiate sports programs.

I’ve heard many say NET is a window to the world and a treasure for Nebraska. Thank you for your support throughout the year, and please know we are honored that many of you consider including NET in your year-end gift planning. We’ve enjoyed sharing 2014 with you, and look forward to the possibilities that 2015 will bring.

NET Seems Like Home for Radio HostAs a teenager, Michael Keelan remembers calling and winning classical music quizzes on NET Radio; and in 1995 he won a Young Musicians Competition, sponsored by the station, where the young violinist played a radio concert and was interviewed by the late William Stibor.

So when a position as substitute announcer for NET Radio opened, Keelan said it “felt like a very familiar place.”

Now starting his third year, Keelan has taken on duties as host of Nebraska Concerts (Sundays at 1 p.m. CT) and fills in for morning, afternoon and evening music shifts.

Keelan teaches strings at Concordia University and performs frequently with groups like the Omaha Symphony Orchestra and Abendmusik at First-Plymouth Church.

“This job taps directly into the entirety of my musical background,” said Keelan, who holds degrees from Baldwin Wallace University and University of Maryland, College Park. “And I love the intellectual curiosity.”

Because he frequently performs with local ensembles, Keelan said he “appears” in perhaps 25 percent of the music played during Nebraska Concerts. The weekly show allows listeners from all over Nebraska to hear the best in locally performed concerts.

“One of the great things about doing a music shift is occasionally finding someone I know is playing and I can throw in a personal anecdote,” Keelan said.

Substitute announcers must be especially flexible, Keelan said, because each shift has different needs in terms of timing, breaks and news or weather updates. Announcers learn on the job, he said, watching others and eventually taking over to “fly solo.”

Keelan enjoys the job, partly because his schedule changes every week. “I never get bored.”

Nebraska Concerts Celebrates the SeasonNET Radio celebrates the holiday season with music and specials selected just for you. Nebraska Concerts delivers the best of recent musical events performed in Nebraska. Throughout December, producer Dave Hughes and host Michael Keelan will showcase holiday concerts. Top-rated work in production, promotion, community engagement and instructional media was recognized when 29 awards were presented to public television stations from around the country at the recent NETA (National Educational

Telecommunications Association) conference in Dallas, Texas. NET is a member of NETA.

NET Communications received the “Multi-Media Promotion” award for its Nebraska’s Capitol Masterpiece campaign. This NET Television documentary showcased the art and architecture of the capitol building as well as the spirit of Nebraska it embodies.

Judges had this to say about the multi-media promotion award – the first ever given by NETA:

It’s a great example of how to be thorough, of all the various options available and how to plan to make the most of the time you have to promote. It’s very well thought out, very well designed, and makes for an overall solid promotions package any agency would be happy to sell to someone for way too much money. The community outreach factor made this multi-media presentation stand apart. Separately, three stations were recognized by NETA for their “Education and Community Engagement Collective Impact Achievements” including KLRU Austin, Vermont PBS, and NET.

NET Learning Services was recognized for “The State of Education in Nebraska” initiative which includes a television series and extensive partnership network and community events. NET was credited with leading 20 stakeholder groups interested in keeping kids in school as well as raising community awareness of issues that affect student achievement.

State of Education in Nebraska: Teachers Speak OutClassrooms are changing and teachers must find a way to navigate the new landscapes while still meeting their most critical role – educating students. In State of Education in Nebraska: Teachers Speak Out, a panel of Nebraska teachers will discuss what it’s like to be in the classroom today. The show premieres Friday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. CT on NET1. (It can also be seen Thursday, Dec. 18, at 8 p.m. CT on NET2 World.)

Topics of discussion will include teacher preparation and training; the effect of poverty in the classroom; the role of technology; and community support. The State of Education in Nebraska project brings together a diverse group of individuals, each with a stake or expertise in children and education, all working toward the same goal of better educational outcomes for Nebraska students and finding ways to bridge the achievement gap.

Spearheaded by NET Learning Services and its partners the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation and Nebraska Loves Public Schools, the series has examined a variety of issues affecting Nebraska’s schools.

NET Kids Technology Event Is Huge Success

Technology was the focus of a workshop Oct. 16 at the Schuyler Elementary School, but it was the people-to-people connections that left a lasting impression on NET’s Emily Nash, an early childhood education specialist for NET Learning Services.

“We were so pleased with the turnout for this event. The school and the community came together to offer an evening rich with content that supported the importance of family involvement in education,” said Nash.

Nearly 1250 people – parents, grandparents, caregivers and children – enjoyed pancakes from the Pancake Man and hugs from Daniel Tiger of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.

More than 25 partner organizations, including NET, Schuyler Public Schools and the Nebraska Early Childhood Education Endowment Fund’s Sixpence Program, provided activity bags, information cards and books, as well as information about helping kids to be successful in school. Materials were provided in both English and Spanish. NET Kids provided hundreds of children with information about PBS Kids learning apps.

“The gratitude and excitement the families shared made this event one of the best we’ve ever organized!” said Nash.

Remembering Tom Magliozzi

Car Talk host Tom Magliozzi died Nov. 3 due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Magliozzi, his brother Ray Magliozzi and their popular show are fixtures on NET Radio.

“Tom and Ray broke any stereotype that may have existing about public radio. They were interesting and informative while being funny and entirely unselfconscious,” said NET Radio Network Manager Nancy Finken.

“We were touched that the Magliozzi family asked that in lieu of flowers, friends and listeners make a donation to their favorite public radio stations in Tom’s memory.”

The Magliozzi family wants Car Talk to continue as a way to honor Tom. It is being renamed The Best of Car Talk and will continue to feature the very best material from 25 years of Car Talk shows, just as it has been since the brothers retired.

The Best of Car Talk will air Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. CT on NET Radio.

Kay Lynn Kalkowski is a native Nebraskan and lifelong educator who is currently writing her third book, “Heart Songs,” about those precious heartfelt moments in life. This is a fitting description of the deep affection she holds for the Bassett community where she taught music and English for 35 years. It also describes her connection to NET.

“I knew a good thing when I saw it,” she said. “While I couldn’t take my students to Lincoln or Omaha, I could bring fine arts into my community through public television.”

A sustaining donor and member of the Jack G. McBride Society (named for NET’s first general manager and public media visionary), she contributes monthly to support both NET Radio and NET Television and has served on the NET Foundation Board. She also supports NET’s endowment fund.

“I want to pay back for all it has given me,” she explained. “For years, NET was the only television station in our area.”

With NET Radio on softly in the background of her super-organized home office in south Lincoln, she explained the invisible thread that connects her to Bassett and NET.

“When I hear songs on NET Radio from one of the high school musicals I directed, it takes me to a very special place.”

Back in 1980, she directed Bill Stibor as Tevye in Rock County High School’s “Fiddler on the Roof.” Stibor, who became NET Radio’s music director, passed away in 2013 after 24 years at the station. “When Bill started announcing, I began listening every day and my students knew it was always on,” she said of NET Radio.

The threads of connections between her classroom and NET are tightly woven. In the late ‘60s, she was part of a local committee helping NET get established in advance of the construction of its KMNE transmitter for local Channel 7. In 1967, she began using ETV programs in her English 11 classroom. From 1968-1978, she served on the instructional television advisory committee creating language arts curriculum for the television series “Watch Your Language” and “Universal Literature.”

The University has been a central thread in her life, too. She holds three degrees from the University of Nebraska; a bachelor’s in music education, a master’s in music, and a doctorate in leadership studies. Although raised in Orleans, she met fellow student and future husband Larry at UNL. They taught together 30 years at Rock County High School, before his passing in 1991. Her first book, “Life with Larry Kalkowski,” describes life on their Boyd County ranch and in the Bassett community raising sons Jeff, Tim, Chris and John.

It’s the end of the year and now is the perfect time to support something you cherish. Generous gifts from members like you sustain NET Television and NET Radio –

making sure the programs you enjoy stay on the air – and NET is able to produce more of the programs you want to see and hear.

But your gift could do more than you even realize. Through careful planning, a gift you make by Dec. 31, 2014 could improve your own financial position in the form of tax benefits. The availability of the income tax deduction helps a charitable person be even more charitable.

If you itemize deductions, a gift is deductible in the year you make it. Generally, the effect of the deduction is that the higher your income tax bracket, the more you will save in taxes.

If you are issuing a check to NET, the effective date of your contribution is the date it is hand-delivered or postmarked. Stock that is held in electronic form can be transferred through your broker to an account in NET’s name. The value and date of the gift are determined by the date of the transfer, which is generally the date the securities are received by NET. The actual date of a gift of real estate is the date you deliver the signed deed.
