TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS As you are aware, at about this same time last year we were looking for an editor for the Masonic News. We asked for your indulgence and patience as we conducted the search and chose a new person for this task. Through your support and un- derstanding we moved forward with the process and received a good response to our search. At the February Board Meeting, we elected Mark Turner as the Editor with assurances from him that he could, and would, produce a quality publication on a timely basis each month. This did not happen and Mr. Turner has submitted his resignation to the Board of Directors for the Masonic News and we have ac- cepted it effective immediately. As you may guess, this has left us in a precarious po- sition; however we have begun to move forward. We are again asking you for support and indulgence as we try to rectify the damage that has been done to our Masonic publication. We have appointed Deb Kendle as our interim Editor and she has assured us she will work toward publishing a December issue so that at the very least, the times and information for upcoming installations will be out in time for Lodges, Chapters, Bethels and Masonic Bodies to share information important to up- coming festivities. In an effort to again find a full time Editor, we are asking for resumes to be submitted to the Board by January 15, 2015. Resumes should be sent to The Masonic News, PO Box 82304, Lincoln, NE 68501. A job description has been sent to the secretary of all lodges and chapters. If you know of anyone who may be interested in this position, please have them contact any member of the Masonic News Board for information. What all this means to you is that you failed to receive a publication that you have paid for. This cost you not only the ire of your members, but in some instances funding from fundraisers that were not ade- quately publicized to the sub- scribing community. Many of you refused to pay for issues not published, and we completely understand your consternation. Those of you who paid for the entire year will receive credit in 2015 for monthly issues not published in 2014 with our heartfelt apology. Advertisers will be afforded the same con- sideration, and we have voted to keep costs for our publication the same as 2014 through 2015. While this puts us in a deficit situation during the coming year, it is the very least we can do to attempt to rectify the situation that a bad decision by our board has placed our subscribers and advertisers in. Again, we apologize and ask for you indulgence as we try to get our publication back on track and serving your needs. Editor’s CornerDeb Kendle, Interim Editor

My apologizes that some of the news in this issue is a bit old. I have done my best going through the email submissions and cross referencing the issues published since May. Those submissions that I did not find published in the last three issues are included in this issue, combining submissions in

some instances. Thank you to our correspondants who have continued to submit to The Masonic News even though the news has been a bit irregular getting published. I will do my best going forward to get a paper out on a monthly basis. I need to give thanks to the Board of Directors for putting their faith in me and naming me interim editor for the time being. I also need to thank my husband, Wade, for his assistance getting this issue out the door.

If any of our readers or co-orespondents have suggestions on how we can make our paper better, please send your suggestions to [email protected].

AUGUST & SEPTEMBER

Degreework continues to be our focus these past few months. Three Fellow Craft degrees completed for Bro Anthony Canada, Bro Jerry Blair and Bro Justin Hamel. We look forward to getting the Master degree’s completed so the brothers can receive further light in masonry.

Hickman Lodge had a community picnic for the College View area. We served hot dogs and treats for the neighborhood in an attempt to reach out and show what masonry is all about.

Another successful “On The Plumb Line” quiz was done during our meetings. WB Doug Johnson, Ill Sir Keith Houfek and Ill Sir Steve Hanneman are the latest winners.

Hoping everyone had a great summer and looking forward to seeing our member in the upcoming fall meetings.

OCTOBER &NOVEMBER

As the year begins to wind down, we are still keeping busy at the Lodge. Hickman Lodge participated in the Grand Lodge’s EA competition in October.

A lot of practices and good friendly meetings made our Lodge stronger in this degree. Special thanks to Senior Warden Jeff Eggerling for his coordination efforts in getting this put together.

Hickman Lodge also was involved in many other degree works this fall and now has three more new Master Masons joining our Lodge. Welcome Brothers Anthony Canada, Jerry Blair II, and Justin Hamel. We appreciate your time and devotion to getting through the degrees. We hope your journey with Masonry is a special one.

Another successful “On The Plumb Line” quiz was done during our meetings. WB Mike Gray and WB Keith Sandall are the latest winners.

In November our election of officers was completed for the 2015 year. Congratulations to Jeff Eggerling (Worshipful Master), Jack Irons (Senior Warden), Johnny Joe Martin (Junior Warden), Thomas Kess (Treasurer) and Olin Boone (Secretary). I’m sure you will carry on the great traditions of Hickman Lodge.

We still haven’t given up on 2014 yet; we are still looking at proving up our Lodge in the Master Mason degree as well as trying to schedule another EA degree before the year is up.

There is always something going on at Lodge, so all are welcome to come and help out and learn.

Remembering B.Lynn AlexanderWade Kendle

On Nov. 26th, I attended the Celebration of the Life of W.B. B.Lynn Alexander, Past Master of Lancaster Lodge No. 54 at the Masonic Temple downtown, 1635 L Street. It is the first time in my limited memory that the Temple has been used for a funeral service.

Anyone who knew Lynn, knew he was a special individual and it showed in the Celebration. Service Coordinator Most W.Bro. Russ Reno did an admirable job. After opening the service, the floor was given to anyone who wanted to offer a few words. Lynn’s life was layed out in an amazing tribute; from his experience in the Masonic Fraternity - being a member of both Lancaster Lodge No. 54 and Tabula Rasa No. 332, to serving our country - being a retired Colonel in the Army National Guard, to his involvement in Alpha Gamma Nu (Ag Men) fraternity at UNL, his love of music - playing piano and being a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity, to running the Pink Flamingo in Ansley, NE, while in High School, and his career as an attorney. To sum up the whole of his life, a video was played of Lynn recounting his life by videographer Michael Cochnar after which Masonic Rites were given by brothers of Lancaster Lodge No. 54.

In the words of his wife Susan,

“Lynn Alexander had insatiable intellectual curiosity, railed against intolerance, a lack of compassion and decency, despised petrified opinions, and relished diversity in people and ideas. Creative expression enriched his life, and music brought great joy to him and to others.” Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

The Alexander family wishes to thank the many friends who provided support, love, food, rides, dog walking and other kindnesses throughout this journey and our years of friendship. We also want to acknowledge the many medical staff members for their compassionate and love care. Boyd Lynn Alexander

Turning the calendar’s page (or adjusting a smart phone app!) signals the ending of one season and a brave but resolute entrance into another. It also gives us time to reflect on the many changes and positive things we’ve experienced together.

OFFICERS FOR 2015 ELECTED

At the Nov. 5 regular meeting, we elected our leaders for the upcoming year.

Yours truly reports these results:Bro. Paul Hadley as Worshipful

Master, WB Gary Kassebaum as Senior Warden, and WB Byron Van Patten as Junior Warden, with WB Bob Brommer re-elected as Treasurer and WB Douglas Johnson at Secretary.

Appointments will be announced soon. Officers will be installed Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. during an open ceremony at the lodge. All are welcome!

LAST RITES FOR LONG-TIME MEMBERS

We were saddened to learn of the recent deaths of two of our members.

Max Thielbar of Lincoln died May 23. Bro. Theilbar received his 60-year membership pin Feb. 5 and had begun returning to lodge events, such as regular communications and the Past Master’s Dinner, to become active in Masonry again.

The June 18 passing of WB Richard (Dick) Tracy was noted at our Aug. 6 meeting. WB Tracy was master of College View 320 in 1977. Burial was Sept 16 in the cemetery at Roca, and WM Curt Wolbert is collecting contributions from brethren and friends to purchase a headstone for WB Tracy’s grave.

WE RECOGNIZE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Caryle Reinmuth, DDS, received his 60-year pin and certificate during an April 30 ceremony at his Lincoln home. WM Wolbert presented the pin to Dr. Reinmuth, with WB Jairo Cabieles and Bros. Paul Hadley and Ben Berck attending.

More than 40 guests gathered at The Knolls Restaurant April 26 for our Annual Past Master’s Dinner. Highlighting the festivities was Deputy Grand Custodian RWB John Brommer of Nebraska Lodge 1 presenting a 50-year membership pin to his father, WB Bob Brommer, the current treasurer of College View 320.

Congratulations to WB Doug Johnson! During our Sept. 3 regular meeting, he received a Masonic Individual Achievement Award for his years of dedicated service to Masonry. Besides serving as our lodge secretary, WB Johnson is actively involved in Bennet Lodge 94 and Capitol Chapter 320 of the Eastern Star and, as Associate Bethel Guardian, was

instrumental in the success of Bethel 60 of Job’s Daughters International.

WB Michael Berger also received his 25-year membership pin and certificate at the Sept. 3 meeting.

WELCOME, NEW BROTHERS!

This has been a busy year for the lodge, with more degrees performed in the first 7 months than usually occur in a full year. Two more have since followed. Hooray!

Six brothers raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason are: David Johnson on March 19, Andrew Kritikos on April 16, Kevin Edelmaier on May 21 and Aaron Bruner on July 9. Scott Gossett and Cody Watkins became Fellow Craft Masons on July 16. Master Mason ceremonies followed for Bro. Gossett on Aug. 13 and Bro. Watkins on Aug. 20.

Bro. Robert Berry became and Entered Apprentice Mason on Nov. 17 and was scheduled to be passed to the degree of Fellow Craft on Dec. 10. Arrangements for his Master Mason ceremony in January 2015 are being made as of this writing.

We also received a note of appreciation from Bennet Lodge 94 for our assistance in Fellow Craft degree work for Bro. Brandon Dietrich in July. Brethren from our lodge agreed to also help with a Master Mason degree on Aug. 19.

CHARTER TRAVELS FOR GOOD CAUSE

On May 7, WB Curt Wolbert and five brothers traveled to Lebanon Lodge 323 in Columbus for our regular communication. That lodge hosted us so Columbus resident Don Schaufelberger, the Bronze Jordan Medal holder from College View 320 and a Past Master, could attend our business meeting. WB Wolbert noted in our online newsletter, “(After getting permission from MWB Joe McBride) I gently took down our 87-year-old charter, which I don’t believe has left the building since it was brought over from the old lodge at the fire station in 1961, and we drove to Lebanon Lodge 323 in a minivan. We hung the charter in their lodge and conducted the business meeting accordingly.”

Brethren from Lebanon Lodge 323 were impressed that Bro. David Johnson proved up that night as a Master Mason in the long form — which we are encouraging our members to do in each degree.

WB Wolbert noted, “After we closed the lodge, both lodges met in the fellowship hall (for cake and coffee), shared stories and took photographs of one another. It was an awesome display of brotherhood and will definitely be talked about for many years to come.”

We thank WM Kim Severyn of Lebanon Lodge 323 for this hospitality and we hope to do this again.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

WB Stephen Kennedy, personal representative of the MWM Joe McBride, was a special guest at our July 2 monthly business meeting. He conveyed greetings and offered assistance from Grand Lodge in conducting a cornerstone dedication ceremony, should we choose to replace our current weathered cornerstone.

WB Johnson reported highlights from the College View Neighborhood Association’s June meeting. This organization offers us opportunities to interact with businesses, families and local schools.

WM Wolbert reported that Lincoln Southeast High School musician Atrayana Donahoe received our scholarship to attend the annual Masonic All-Star Marching Band Camp, held at the University of Nebraska-Kearney during the Shrine Bowl week.

Brethren also awarded $45 each to two Job’s Daughters to attend their annual convention.

Brothers voted Nov. 5 to donate $100 from the general fund to support the 2015 Purple Ribbon Club of the Rawhide Wranglers 4-H Club of the Fremont Home for Children.

Members were urged to bring items for the annual all-bodies garage sale at College View Lodge Sept. 12-14. Proceeds from the sale supported the building maintenance and improvement fund.

Your correspondent points out that Bro. David Johnson will represent College View 320 as our correspondent for the Masonic News. He brings enthusiasm and genuine curiosity to the position, and I join you in looking forward to his reporting and insights into all things Masonic.

STAY TUNED, BROTHERS

At our Aug. 6 and Sept. 3 meet ings , WB Johnson reported on several prospects for membership — fantastic news!

Brother Tim Colwell also has joined College View 320.

An updated Lodge directory will be available this fall, including changes of addresses and information about brothers who have been raised to the degree of Master Mason since the last directory was distributed.

The annual College View Halloween party for children of fraternal organizations and the surrounding community was Oct. 31. Treats and fellowship were shared in the lodge from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Our next regular communication will be Wed., Jan. 7, 2015, at 7:30 p.m.

Other updates and a column from WM Wolbert are provided on the College View 320 website.

BUSINESS MEETING

As the outdoor temperature and humidity rapidly decreased, friendship and warmth increased with every member and friend who entered Martha Washington Chapter’s doors on September 4th. WM Janice kept the group moving through business, knowing that PM Sue Bell-Heilman and PP Mark Heilman’s salad and pizza were waiting for all to enjoy.

Business items included:Reminder of the Sep. 6

The Martha Washington Roast Beef Dinner was held Sun., Oct. 19. Thank you to those who helped setup, serve, and cleanup. A bigger thank you to those who opened their pocket books and supported Martha Washington Chapter by coming to the dinner.

MEMBERS HONORED

Fifty year members Marolyn Robson and Maxine Buchardt were honored for their years of service and dedication to the Order.

CLOSING

WM Janice opened and closed the meeting with bits of useless trivia. Two that piqued interest among those present were: 1) an ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain, and 2) five Jell-O flavors that flopped were celery, coffee, Cola, apple and chocolate.

WP Pro-Tem Mike Buchardt closed with a reminder of events of Sep. 11, 2001, which brought to mind Jesus’s words that sometimes are difficult to live, “Pray for your enemies, and bless those who persecute you.”

SEPTEMBER WAS THE MONTH FOR REPAIRS AT

CRAFTSMEN LODGE

Last fall it was noticed that the large pine tree in the front of the lodge was rubbing on the roof and filling the gutters with pine needles, it was removed.

Next the roof needed to be replaced. The trustees got estimates and the roof was completed the first week in the September.

The water heater started having problems. It was decided to not replace the old one in kind. We don’t use the building every day but the old water heater was running all the time. After some research, Bro Ralph Beach located 2 small on demand 220 volt water heaters. The old electrical panel was maxed out. An upgrade should have been done years ago. With personal donation and a lot of work from Brothers: Bruce Trautwein, Ron Tillman, Jim Ryder, and Ralph Beach we got it done.

Bro Jim Ryder helped Bro Ron Tillman get the 13’ by 2’ by 3’ deep trench for underground electrical service. Bro Bruce Trautwein being a Master Electrician, he made short work of the upgrade . Brothers Ron Tillman, Ralph Beach and myself, were Bro. Bruce’s support team.

A big thanks to all who helped in these projects. Not forgetting the trustees that got bids for the roof. With the upgraded, water heaters and electrical, we will be watching to see when they are paid off with the monthly saving. It could be as soon as the end of 2015.

DEGREES CONFERRED

East Lincoln Lodge is living in the present with degree work. July 31 the Master Mason Degree was conferred on Benjamin Murphy by WB Scott Dietrick; WB Monte Dodge as Sr. Warden, Bro. Bill Hayes as Jr. Warden, and WB John Butler, Bro. Blake Berkley and Bro. Bill Hayes taking the role of the Craftsmen. On Aug. 28, the Master Mason Degree was conferred on Ron Silver by WB Scott Dietrick with WB Scott Dodge as Sr. Warden and Bro. Bill Hayes as Jr.Warden.

ADDITIONALLODGE ACTIVITIES

The monthly potluck preceded the regular communication on Aug. 7. It was nice to see Wilma Dietrick dining with us again.

In the Lodge, reports were given by WB Scott Dietrick on the boiler maintenance, roof/ceiling repair and weed control. Thanks to Bo. Blake Berkley who volunteered to maintain the lawn. Prior to the potluck he used his mower to cut the grass and then, not wanting to miss the lodge work, sped home, showered and returned in time for the potluck and the meeting.

“Be thankful for the bad things in life. For they opened your eyes to the good things you weren’t

paying attention to before!” “Happiness is not a

station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.”

East Lincoln Lodge continues to travel to the East and at the business meeting in November two new petitions were received with the investigation committee reporting favorably. Matt Jenkins and Kenneth Burns were voted on to receive the degrees . With many events happening during the holidays, they will start their journey in January.

Bro. Jermy Deaton was presented his apron, diploma and words of welcome by the Worshipful Master James Michaelson.

The election of officers for the year 2015 ended the business meeting. Elected as WM was Bill Hayes, SW Scott Dodge, JW, Blake Berkley, Secretary, WB Tom Michaelson and Treasurer, Roger Lipert. WM elect announced that the installation will be held Sunday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m.

“The years move ever so quickly and time waits for no one. Once again it’s the Holiday Season when we should meet and greet one another in the spirit of friendship and brotherhood. Friendship and brotherhood cannot be bound by place and time. It is carried in each of us . . . in our hearts, in our minds and in our spirits.

C h e m o t r e a t m e n t s a r e scheduled. Some good news, Ronald his fiancee got married on Sep. 13 in South Dakota.

Sis. Deb Kendle reported she got a position with the Lincoln Public School District at Roper Elementary School, in the kindergarten room as a para.

Sis. Deb also reported that her daughter Belle is in the East High Musical “Fiddler on the Roof” in November.

Dayle Prenosil updated us on her granddaughter Abby.

CAMPING WITH THEE EICHES!

The guys in our chapter recently went camping, and let me say, they did it the Eiche way. It wouldn’t truly be Eiche fashion without a casualty right off the bat. Wyatt heroically volunteered for that, by falling onto and into the concrete fire pit scraping and damaging his leg rather gruesomely. Wyatt being a runner and all, we decided to take him to the hospital, to luckily find out he didn’t break a single bone in his leg. While he was being taken to the doctor, we surprisingly managed to not lose a single boy to tent related incidents.

Although the very next day, two people, Mom Miller, and our Eiche brother, Zade Miller, both showed signs of poison oak spots. They did recover, but it took over a week.

Finally we had the tents up, the fire blazing, Wyatt returned (all bandaged up) and we were ready to party. We roasted hotdogs and marshmallows on wire hangers, and we did all of this without any injuries. (Surprisingly.) We even had two of our members Michael and Jack catch some fish. They each caught a bass, and Michael even caught a carp. (Yes, magi-carp is fine.) We all had a wonderful time and we can’t wait to see what we’ll be doing next.

Eiche Chapter recently held an activity at the lake which included fishing, games, and a whole lot of fun!
