Helping Our Community

Dear Families,

We are always thinking of special ways to instill the importance of ‘the season of giving’. This year the teachers are putting together baskets to donate to Habitat for Humanity. This incredible organization completely depends on donations, and we would love for our school to help make a difference for those in need. We will have a bin in front of the preschool to place your donations.

Each class has a theme for collections:

MRS. WHITE/MRS. DUNN’S 2S Snuggle Up - Throw blankets, movies, books, warm socks, hot cocoa/tea/coffee, etc.

MRS. WHITE/MRS. MANDOLARE’S 3S What’s Cookin’ - Small kithen electrics, gadgets, baking tools, kitchen towels, utensils

MRS. SILVESTRI/MRS. ANDERSON’S 3S Mr. Clean - Cleaning supplies, garbage bags/cans, dish soap, etc.

MRS. CALLAHAN/MRS. BARDANI’S 4S Gift Cards - Any amount, to any place

A couple of these baskets will be given to Habitat’s latest project; a duplex in Nashua. This project has provided a home for two moms, each with 2 children. They had lived out of their cars and shelters over the past few years. Receiving these gifts will be a magical surprise!! Please send in donations by Friday, December 14th.

‘Parents Night Out’ is offered several times a year by HPS as a opportunity for parents to drop children off at the preschool with our teachers, while you enjoy some free time. We provide dinner, crafts, playing with peers and a holiday movie! We will have several young helpers volunteering and we are anxious to see many little friends.

Don’t forget to sign up on Sign Up Genius. Ages 2-10 welcome. Send your kiddos in their jammies too!

With the grand opening of Buckleys (right next door to HPS) only days away, the preschool is putting in place a new plan for drop-off and pick-up. Starting Monday, December 10th, Hollis Preschool will begin using ONLY carpool during drop off and pick up. Bridget will be placing signs to show where to enter carpool along the curb (next to Buckley’s at the blue dumpster, facing the preschool). Two teachers will be assisting children out of their cars, two at a time. We ask that parents remain in the vehicles and allow teachers to help students out the passenger side, if possible.

Your patience and understanding during this process is truly appreciated. The greatest priority is keeping all children safe at the preschool. Below you will find a map to add a visual image for this process. Please don’t worry if you are unsure; there will be little elves helping during the first few days

If you have any questions, please eel free to ask Bridget.

GYMNSTICS

The kids have been working on their gross motor skills in gymnastics while learning specific skills like summer salts, hand stands, and kart wheels. They have been getting their bodies healthy and we hope to continue this and try some new skills in the upcoming month!

Enrichment

Dear Parents,

The students in K-R have been focusing on growing their knowledge of letters, numbers, and reading! They are getting so excited about words that they have seen before or know and so we have been really working on these site words! We have been working on the letters that they have been learning with Mrs. Callahan and just doing fun fine motor activities with them as well as crafts too! We are excited to start up December with some fun new sensory experiences as well as some holiday traditions around the world!

KARATE

Students in karate love Mr. Smith! They have such a fun time learning about respect and self control while also working on those karate skills. They recently received a surprise visit from Mr. Stone and the kids were thrilled. The students also received their own belts & gees from the teachers!

Hollis Preschool Newsletter December 2018

Dear Parents,

November turned out to be a shorter STEAM month but we still got in some great exploration. The first week we worked with colors. Using ice blocks, the children experimented with salt. They discovered what happens to the ice as the salt sits on it, noticing it created holes in the ice and we discussed why that happens. The children spread watercolors on top as well to help see the holes and mixing colors.

Our next experiment was using water/food coloring and oil. We created all the colors using red, blue and yellow food coloring. I then gave the children pipets so they could drop colored water into a small cup of oil. We discussed why the colors looked like little bubbles in the oil, and also why all the water/colors ended up on the bottom of the cup eventually.

The following week we did a Pete the Cat theme. We talked about simple machines, such as, catapults that could ‘pop’ and (launch) buttons. The children experimented with catapults and buttons and I let them make simple machines of their own. The children stacked/counted buttons using spaghetti and blue play dough. I supplied the children with boxes, rubber bands, beads, containers etc. I encouraged them to create their own instrument to ‘rock’ with. They created guitars, drums, and shakers. The kids really enjoyed rocking out to ‘Rocking in My School Shoes’ with their instruments.

Our final week was Thanksgiving theme. We looked at pictures of turkeys and talked about all their parts (feathers, beak, snood, wattle, tassel, etc). Each child then used scissors, glue, paper, egg carton, feathers and markers to create their own turkeys. I am looking forward to December with some winter and holiday themes coming up!
