ambiance and classical music. Some Client Artists that were able to attend, proudly stood by their works of art, able to

answer and questions and excitedly watched as individuals bid on their artwork.

Dear Family Members,

At Spectrum for Living, our summers

and fall are packed with so many

wonderful events and happenings,

that they all blend seamlessly into to

one continual flow of awareness

building, family involved and

community supported initiatives. It is

such that in the blink of an eye a new

Season is upon us. The summers are

always too short, and the winters are

always too long, but that is New

Jersey.

Unforgettably, this past October

much of our State was impacted by

Megastorm Sandy. Many of our

Clients, residences, family members

and offices were affected. During this

time, resources were scarce and fear

plagued the minds of many as each

day passed. We saw power outages,

flooding, varying degrees of

destruction, and gas shortages.

Through these trying days, the

consideration and hard work of the

Spectrum for Living Family kept us

operational and livable. This

‚Family‛ consists of Staff, Families,

Community members, etc. Each

played a role to ensure our quality of

care was not compromised during this

natural disaster.

Many of our care workers stayed late

or worked extra in order to

compensate and cover for those unable

to leave their homes or report to their

job site. Our maintenance staff waited

countless hours on numerous lines for

gasoline needed for the generators and

vans essential to keep Spectrum

running. Staff spent nights at Facilities

in order to be on hand to help the next

day. Families, in the wake of this crisis,

sent donations of food, clothing, and

other much needed items. Friends in

the Community monitored our

Facebook page, alerting us to when

gas stations were open and where we

could get supplies. There is not, nor

would there ever be, enough room in

this publication to properly thank all

of those involved. Please know our

gratitude and appreciation knows no

bounds and we are forever grateful of

the selflessness and compassion you

have shown Spectrum for Living and the

dynamic individuals we serve.

Sandy was a calamity for many, but it

was also a triumph. It proved, in the

midst of a disaster, there are still those

willing to aid the call for help and do

what they can, even if in need

themselves. These moments of

generosity were truly inspiring; we have

all been inspired to stay Jersey Strong.

As we embark on our 30th year of service

let us not forget the lessons we learned

this fall. We are stronger together, and

together we will make it. There are many

upcoming occasions to mark the

milestone of Spectrum for Living turning

30, and we cannot wait to

celebrate….together.

Regards,

Lauren Turiello

The 2012 Fishing Trip For the sixth summer in a row, the

Spectrum for Living Fishing Trip

continues to be a favorite Annual

Event. Spending the day out on the

open water of the channels coast that

outline the Atlantic Highlands, the

clients enjoy a day of catching fresh

fish and fresh air. Jerry Kearns,

Spectrum for Living's Director of

Central Recreation, created this event,

having to handle a lot of initial skepticism. ‚A lot of people

were concerned about our clients, particularly those in

wheelchairs. I didn’t want to just plan events for individuals

who are ambulatory. Spectrum for Living is about embracing

diversity, and limiting an event to someone who can walk only is not

something I believe in,‛ says Jerry. On the first trip, 28 people

attended, only 3 or 4 individuals in wheelchairs.

Word spread quickly how invigorating

and fun the trip was and soon Jerry was

looking for an alternative boat that could

better accommodate more wheelchairs.

Captain Mike Scardino of Scardino’s

Charters was contacted as his boat, the

Mi-Jo II, had a dock where (at high-tide)

will be aligned with the wheelchair ramp. This offered a safer, more

respectful option to individuals in wheelchairs so that they could cross on their

own accord, versus having to be carried.

In 2012, with the trip in high demand, three fishing trips occurred, for day

program and residential clients. Jerry notes, ‚some clients say it’s their favorite

trip of the year. One client just comes to just sit in the sun and doesn’t even fish!‛

Those clients that do fish, have a

memorable experience, smiling

widely at cameras that capture their catches.

Ann Long, Vice President of

Community Services, says,

‚This annual ‚deep sea‛

fishing trip is another example

of the outstanding

opportunities Spectrum staff

provides the wonderful people

we serve. The thrill of being on the water cannot be matched, except perhaps

when someone gets to reel in the big one!‛

The Spectrum for Living Walks

4 THE SPECTACULAR

This past September, Spectrum for Living held two Walks to

benefit the organization. On September 9th at the Central New

Jersey Walk, families gathered and walked around Roosevelt

Park, enjoying a BBQ led by the Knights of Columbus,

St. Thomas More Council 2188 (Platinum Sponsors), who also

attended and volunteered at the Northern New Jersey Walk.

We thank

Mayor

Antonia

Ricigliano

who

stopped

to show her support for our Edison facilities and Spectrum

for Living.

A week later, Spectrum

for Living again

welcomed a beautiful

day at Van Saun Park,

attended by many

families, companies and food donors including Cupcake Cutie, Panera

Bread, and Marathon Enterprises. Many thanks to County Executive

Kathleen Donovan who stopped by to show her support, the companies that

joined that day’s Vendor Park, along with the attending volunteers and

volunteer DJs and photographers! After a bagel breakfast, attendees were

off, coming back to a

Walk Celebration of

many giveaways

and lots of great

memories.

In one of our most successful Walk years ever,

collecting just over $56,000, the Walk’s accomplishments

spoke to the amazing support we had received from the

extraordinary

Walk Teams,

Volunteers

Sponsors, and

Contributors. It

was through our collective support we were able to create such

accomplished and joyful Spectrum event. We look forward to many

more Walk years of success shared together!

Happy Birthday Spectrum for Living

6 THE SPECTACULAR

In 1983, five brave families, all with adult children with

developmental disabilities, recognized the need there would

be for their children to be properly supported even after the

parent no longer was able to.

First opening in Closter with the Intermediate Care Facility

and able to care for 48 individuals, Spectrum for Living has

happily and dramatically expanded over the last 30 years

since its inception. Now providing residential and day

programs to hundreds of individuals with developmental

and physical disabilities, the organization also provides

services to individuals living in the community. As the

populations we serve age or change, Spectrum for Living is

constantly updating its serves and providing the most

customized, premier care to individuals with disabilities.

This year, we celebrate the positive impact Spectrum for Living

has had on many individual families. In addition, we celebrate

the Spectrum for Living family, consisting of many different

people, connected through their cohesive support of an

essential organization for some of New Jersey’s most

vulnerable citizens.

Check out the many activities planned specifically in honor of

our 30th Anniversary:

during 2013 with the

branded Spectrum for

Living logo. Be sure to

7 THE SPECTACULAR

This past October, we featured local Tom’s River celebrity, Anthony

Starego—the star kicker for the Brick High School Football Team on

our Facebook page. Although diagnosed with Autism, Anthony used

his disability as his greatest asset, often using his strong attention to

detail to help him know what intricate steps and direction would lead

to a winning kick.

On the Football Team for four years, Anthony was added to the list of

starting Brick kickers. In October, he took his place as Kicker against

Tom’s River East, making all four of his extra point attempts and

helping his team to win 28-27.

We are happy for

Anthony, and his

teammates. We are

inspired by our

clients and

individuals like

Anthony, who show

a disability in not an

inability, but an

opportunity to

succeed. Credit Andrew Mills/The Star-Ledger
