POOL GUEST PASSESEffective, Saturday, May 12, 2018 The Villas at Five Ponds Pool guest pass policy will now be in full effect. For every guest that enters the outdoor or indoor pool area a completed guest pass must be placed into the guest pass box upon arrival to the pool area. (Note: Pool guest pass books with 10 passes maybe purchased from the prop-erty manager, 975 Easton Road, Suite 102, Warrington, PA 18976 for a $20 check made out to The Villas at Five Ponds Community Association. You may also place a note that indicates the residents name and address along with your guests name wrapped around $2 in cash for each guest. Note: Writing your address on dollars bills is not acceptable. There is one exception to guest pass requirement, single residents are allowed one adult guess per day at no charge.

OFFICIAL POOL ENTRANCE The only officially authorized way a resident and, if applicable, with their guest, may enter the outdoor pool area is from the indoor pool hall door. People entering from other areas, like the exit only gates or other exit only doors of the clubhouse for their first time of that day, are subject to being asked to leave facility. As reminder there have been significant improvements made since last summer to provide 24 hour video surveillance over look-ing the outdoor and indoor pool areas.

BROADWAY SHOW TRIP: THE BAND’S VISIT n CHeRyle GoldbeRG

ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 2nd, fifty-six Five Ponders boarded a Starr Tours bus to New York City to see The Band’s Visit at The Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The show had received eleven Tony nominations, so our expectations were high, but most of us agreed that it didn’t measure up to the Tony Award hype. But looking at the “donut” instead of the “hole,” the weather was beautiful, and we all enjoyed delicious lunches at various New York City restaurants of our choice—in the good company of our friends and neighbors. As they say, “You can’t win ‘em all.” But, over the years, we have enjoyed seeing many outstanding Broadway shows together.

SHOULD COLLEGE ATHLETES BE PAID? n Jake saMson, The Villa’S Voice Guest sPoRts RePoRteR

KEEPING UP with the news, the Supreme Court killed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which limited sports betting to one state for the past 25 years in a 6-3 decision. Now, it is up to the states to decide whether they want their citizens to bet on sports or not as it is their call. This is something that I really didn’t think would ever be passed, so it made

me think of another thing that I think won’t ever come into fruition: The Payment of College Athletes. I dedicated my English research paper to this topic, picking a side on what must be a controversial topic in an area that you are in-terested in. I have stuck with this opinion from before freshman year, and still stick with it today: College Athletes Should Not Be Paid. To start, I want to preface with that I go to a 27,000+ person university. This university moved from the ACC to the Big Ten Conference for a ton of extra money in revenue/TV deals etc. This University is D1 all around, with standout teams in both men/women’s lacrosse, soccer, women’s basketball, and respectable teams in football and basketball. I fully understand the hard work that they have to put in to be as good of athletes as they are. They must take 12 credits like all of the rest of us, along with practices/games/events

MEN’S CLUB event at Lamberti’s includes (left to right, above) hosts Kerry Seiden, Ed Hetzelson, guest speaker, Ray Didinger, hosts Berny Dubin, and Mort Kolman. Victory dessert is also shown.Below right, guest speaker Ray Didinger appreciates a sketched portrait by Villa’s Voice cartoonist, Al Wiesner.

that they are required to go to. Still, I don’t think they should be paid. Many of these athletes are receiving healthy scholarships to attend these fantastic universities that many other students are pay-ing top dollar for. To me, this hefty discount many of these players receive are already a good deal. Second, there are many perks that these athletes receive throughout their time here. They often include extra help with assignments (many of these teams have tutors), clothes/athletic apparel along with other things. In fact, at UMD, I see many athletes riding these mo-ped scooters around campus with their Under Armour backpacks with their numbers and respective sports on them. Most importantly though, the reason why I don’t think college athletes should be paid, is because there really isn’t a fair system that could be implemented. Yes, the NCAA makes a ton of money, but it’s really only through basketball and football, with the other sports struggling. Even if you wanted to do an even stipend, there is no way that a player from a top-10 basketball team like Duke should make the same as a swimmer from Bucknell, based on how much money these players bring in for their respective universities. It’s just an extremely slippery slope. However, with the recent ruling on betting that I thought would never happen, maybe NCAA President Mark Emmert and his committee could get some ideas brainstormed. Anything can happen at this point, but my views still stay the same on that topic.

Observations • TipsLetters to the EditorA WARM MESSAGE ON COOLING

DEAR FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS, I would like to share with you a recent exploration I had, that being replacing my homes HVAC system. Keep in mind I am someone who knows very little about HVAC systems or how they work, below is what I found. Is it 100% accurate, probably not, but it is what I found on my journey to buying a new HVAC system and maybe some of this information will help other residents when their need arises. I am an original owner who moved into our home in July 2005. This means my HVAC system was 13 years old. Over the years I have maintained service contracts with two different HVAC providers, one at a time. In addition to fixing the units at reduced costs when they broke down, the contract also included pre-summer, pre-winter maintenance/ checkups on the units. This is something I believe keeps break-downs to a minimum and prolongs the life of the units. This year during my pre-summer check, on April 20th, which was being done by a very experi-enced technician, he showed me in the upstairs unit in the top area of the furnace the “coil” which is one of the prime parts that cools the air for air conditioning. It was rusting pretty badly. How long will this last I asked? Very hard to predict how much life is left in the coil. “How much does a new coil cost to replace?” For the parts and the labor somewhere between $1,500 and $3,000. I then took a ride around Phase 1 of our development of course I can only see the compressors of the homes that are on the street side. One can observe about one out of every five has been replaced. Note: I noted, there were 5 homes just to the right of mine on the street side all having units that were not the original Trane units. So rather than worry about an expen-sive part going bad especially if it happened during the extreme heat of summer on my 13 year old system, I made the decision to replace it.

So, who do you buy it from or get prices from? My advice to all is not look for the “cheapest.” Remember a wise man once said, “there is always someone who can provide you a product or a service, for less, but he who considers the cost alone is a fool.” So instead find a company you trust or one that one of your friends trust. In my case my “condensate” line froze this past winter during the very cold period and shut down my heater, when I really needed them they were there for me very quickly in addition to that the owner of the company help set up a system to prevent it from happening again. What brand do you buy? There are 4 main brands, in alphabetical order, they are: Carrier, Lenox, Trane and York. If you buy one of those, you probably can’t go too wrong. There are many other lesser known brands, some made by the previous mentioned companies, if you choose to go that way to save some dollars, just check reviews on the internet for the brand you are buying. Note: There will always be people who will be willing to tell you they had ”Brand X“ and it was great or it was terrible, do your own research.

In my case, I choose York. A good HVAC sales person from a trusted com-pany will help you choose the brand and what you need. It just so hap-pens that York, was offering my chosen vendor significant financial advantages in order to get more of their business, and some of that gets passed along to the customer in what they pay me.

The bottom line is to replace and install your heating and air conditioning units, and take away your old ones you are probably going to spend after various rebates etc., between $7,000 to $11,000, at least this is what I found. One key difference is do you want a more efficient gas furnace and air condi-tioning system? More efficient means it produces more heat and air conditioning for less energy costs. So maybe by spending more you will save on your gas and electric bills over the future years. It is hard to tell if paying more for more efficient units will save you enough in your utility bills to make

up the difference, one cannot predict the future. With my limited knowledge I found that the main measure of efficiency of gas furnace is something called AFUE you can get one between 80 and 97 percent. The main measure of air conditioning efficiency is SEER you can get one between 12 and 18. (It seems that more SEEERs equals a physically larger unit outside.) Most will get a 3 or a 3 ½ ton unit—any bigger most likely would require a large investment in up grading the electrical system within the house. My York unit was 3 ½ ton, 17 SEER and the furnace was a 95 AFUE. Mine came with a 10 year all parts warranty. Note: Many Vendors offer financing. In addition to the cost for the units I also bought from the vendor a 10 year all labor contract. This means other than the cost of 9 pre-summer, pre-winter checkups, note the Vendor will give me year one free, I should have no other parts or labor costs for 10 years. One could say, I am saving the future services costs that surely my older units would be costing me if I had kept them. One other thing, any AC unit made before 2010, that would be all the original ones in Phase I in our development use R22/Freon. If you look that up on the inter-net, it indicates 19 months from now it will be illegal to sell it in the United States. Will there be “work arounds” if your unit needs Freon after that date, probably, but at what cost? This also might be another reason to move forward on replacing your units sooner rather than later. I hope this information helps anyone who has given some thought to replacing their HVAC system. Feel free to call me if you have any questions. ~Joel Mickelberg

LET'S LOOK AT THE NUMBERS!

DURING THE LAST FEW WEEKS I have been carefully looking at the numbers and they are making me sick! Our right to vote freely, one of our greatest freedoms, is being greatly neglected! In the recent May primary only seven-teen percent of registered voters in Philadelphia took the time to vote and only eighteen percent of registered voters cast their ballots in Pennsylvania. I understand it was a little more than nineteen percent in Bucks County. Even worse, we have experienced a record number of school shootings, at least twenty-one from January 1st, 2018, through May 18th, 2018. The numbers of teenage suicides and other mental health issues continue to rise and the number of active hate groups as reported by the Southern Poverty Law Center stands at a disgusting level of nine hundred and fifty-four in the United States! Believe it or not our great state is high on the list with thirty-six organized hate groups. The number rise in the cost of health care and especially prescriptions is beyond belief and strongly effects the economic lives of many citizens. Taxes in recent years have skyrocketed even though many major areas of needs are not being addressed . The salaries paid to stars in the fields of sports and entertainment are crazy but most hard working people have not gotten adequate cost of living raises, take senior citizens on pension for example. I could go on and on with my NUMBER CONCERNS but I hope you get my message. Work and think hard to vote and support people who will help us make a real dif-ference in our war on NUMBERS! ~Bernie Hoffman

SOCIAL COMMITTEE NEWS n aileen salu, co-chair

WE’RE BACK AND BUSY working on events for the upcoming months. As we all know, part of what makes The Villas at Five Ponds such a desirable and active community is the steady stream of activities that are always being planned. All of the committees would welcome input from new residents. Please take a look at Page 11 of every issue of The Villa’s Voice. Page 11 contains a list of all of the committees and clubs and the chairs of those groups. If you have an idea for an event or want to help plan a function, please join us. Not only is this a good way to get involved in your community but it is also a great way to meet your neighbors. We are still looking for someone to take over the respon-sibilities for the kitchen. This involves being responsible for maintaining supplies and keeping the kitchen organized. Please contact Lorraine Incollingo for more details. If you are planning a program, please contact Rose Gold or me to be sure there isn’t a programming conflict. In order for all of our programs and activities to get the best response, we try to avoid planning multiple events within a similar time frame. Hope everyone has a great summer. Stay tuned for events being planned in the months to come.

IMPRESSED that this was a 2012 James Beard semifinalist for ”Best New Restaurant“ in America, and meeting our Margate friends for lunch at a halfway point, we were eager to give them a try at their New Jersey location, in Marlton. This popular restaurant—located in a strip center near 295 and Rt. 130—was quite busy on a recent Saturday for lunch. The server was cordial, pleasant and helpful throughout the meal. Looking forward to fresh fish and salad items, we were surprised and disappointed to find that the lunch menu was rather limited—with a lack of good fish offerings. Salmon, as a salad addition, and pollack, in the beer battered fish, was offered along with tuna as the only choices. I had the chopped salad, topped with falafel. The vegetables were sliced tissue paper thin, and the flavor was totally bland, except for a sparse kick from mini-feta crumbles. The dressing lacked punch, too. A shared caramelized cauliflower appetizer was more satisfying. My wife ordered a half BLT sandwich and a cup of soup. The

sandwich was nothing special, but the soup—a hearty minestrone—was exceptional. Loaded with vegetables and red kidney beans, it was a totally satisfying starter. I would have enjoyed a larger bowl. My friend had a salmon salad—unappealingly served with a small filet of the fish depressingly served dark-side up. A “Bloody Beet Salad“ looked better, with much greater visual appeal. It had yogurt, pistachio, greens, and pan drippings. If it weren't for the delightful sharing with dear fiends, I would have been even more disappointed with this visit. Dinner may be a totally different story. We’ll give that a try soon at our neighborhood branch in Horsham, and let you know.

Community News • Tips • Health IssuesAlertsBE CAREFUL WITH TRAVELING CONTRACTORSThe recent influx of calls from consumers have alerted us that travel-ing contractors, specifically driveway pavers, are working in Bucks County. Please beware of doing business with them.

Traveling Contractors/Driveway PavingThe members of the Bucks County Crimes Against Older Adults Task Force warns residents that spring is the time of year when consumers are anxious to get outside to begin cleaning up around their homes. It is not surprising that this is also the time of year that traveling contractors begin making their rounds. They may say things to you such as “We are doing a job in your neighborhood/on your street” or “We have extra material” or they offer to make you a “great offer” to get the job done today. Unfortunately, many contractors that solicit business by going door to door are most likely not legitimate contractors. Many are not registered as Home Improvement Contractors (HIC) as required by Pennsylvania law. To register as an HIC there are a few, but basic requirements. The business must provide a physical address (not a P.O. Box), a landline telephone number and provide proof of adequate insurance coverage. Each year around this time, we see a spike in complaints from consumers who have paid for work to be done and either the busi-ness did not come back to finish the job or the work was subpar. And because the contractor was not registered and did not provide good contact info, the consumer is left “holding the bag.”Please be aware of this type of contractor. If you have work or repairs that need to be done either inside or on the outside of your home or lawn, please be certain that:

1. The business has and shares with you their Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) number.

2. The business has a physical address and phone number.3. They provide a written estimate. Make sure the estimate or contract has a detailed description of the work to be performed, the materials to be used, as well as a start date and a completion date. 4. Any warranty that should also be in writing.5. Look for these red flags: High pressure sales and time pressure tactics, offering a discount because they have “left over material from a job done at your neighbors.” 6. Get a business card.

Remember that any contract that is signed in your home allows you a 3-day right to cancel. This statement should be in writing on the contract for it to be a legitimate, as required on a home improvement contract under the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act. Call Bucks County Consumer Protection to inquire if there are any complaints in our database against the contractor you are considering. It is also recommended that you do a web search of the business prior to signing any contract to check out any online reviews from other consumer’s experience with the company. If you have decided on a contractor, they may request a one-third deposit up front. It is not recommended nor is there any reason to pay in full until the work is completed to your satisfaction. Once the bill is paid in full, there is no incentive for the business to come back and complete the work. Other Red Flags: the company name written on the vehicle is different from the name of the company that you hired (make note of the license plate #), license plate is from out of state.

MASTORIS DINER IN BORDENTOWN, NJ: THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY n Ron doRfMan

IF YOU WERE DRIVING from NYC to Philly 30 years ago, this was THE place to stop. On the way, we reminisced with friends about the nearby infamous Yardville Auction of yesteryear (an entertaining ”cheap date“ warehouse where they sold everything from broken cookies to diamond rings.) Many of us would often stop at Mastoris for a late night snack. Now, after my recent Sunday luncheon visit, I’ll just keep going until I hit the terrific diners closer to home. The food was far below expectations, and the place way understaffed. Waiting over an hour at lunchtime with water and coffee doesn't please me. Neither does serving tasty cheese and cinnamon breads pacify me—no matter how good it happens to be. Here’s what we had: I ordered the Skinnyliscios Burrito for $9.99. It was described as a whole wheat tortilla stuffed with egg

Reviews • Suggestions • RecipesBrief Bites 2 whites (they were dry as a bone), grilled chicken (which was bland and white), bell peppers (very few), green onions (nowhere to be found) and cheddar cheese (a dried out dribble on the top), and supposed to be served with salsa verde (which never showed up) and seasonal fresh fruit—which arrived after I finished the lackluster, dried out, and by the way, cold burrito. Plated poorly (a lonesome, ugly log), tasteless, dry, and visually unappealing. My wife had the West Coast Benedict for $11.99. Described as ripe avocado (she could hardly find it), grilled tomato, (cold) poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on (burnt) toasted whole grain bread. Supposedly served with home fries or seasonal fresh fruit. One French fry was on the plate and the fruit arrived later, too. My conclusion—bad all around. The servers were exhausted, the kitchen expediter useless, and the food “iffy” in every way.
