8.30 AM COFFEE & REGISTRATION

8.40 AM WELCOME

9.00 AM THE KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

MANAGING YOUR DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONSThe Registrar confronts

difficulties in so many different

situations. If these difficulties

are not managed successfully,

the ramifications are serious, if

not very serious. Some people

have learned what they should do

when confronting upset, anger,

unreasonableness or accusation.

More, they expect the outcome to

be positive. What do they know

about difficulty management that

most of us don’t? What techniques

have they learned to apply?

Mary Ferguson Director,

Ignite Coaching, Australia

9.45 AM THE STUDIO ON DIFFICULT QUESTIONS

MANAGING YOURSELF IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION Four specific skill development

exercises, relating to the way

you should manage yourself

when confronted by anger,

aggression, unreasonableness and

distress, will be worked through.

Each exercise will culminate in

establishing when the “EAR’

moment is reached, when you

should build empathy, agreement

and rapport.

COMMUNICATING EMPATHETICALLY WITHOUT GETTING INTO TROUBLE WITH THE LAWSaying ‘no’ without offending;

relevant discrimination legislation;

empathising without admitting

liability; dealing objectively with

a separated family in situations

where parents have differing

views as to their children’s

education; “modern families”

including same-sex couples or a

family with a transgender student

or refusing an enrolment because

of what another school says

about a particular student are just

some aspects of the law seen on

a daily basis in a busy Registrar’s

office. This practical presentation

is designed to review and touch

on these matters which are

becoming increasingly important

in Australia’s education sector.

“THE REGISTRAR’S BEST FIT WITH THE MARKETER”. “Great web-site, beautifully

produced. Terrific tour. Great kids.

But, it’s been that way at each of the

schools we are looking at. Where

are you different, even distinctive?”

Marketers know lots about brand,

image, style and message. They

know the importance of getting

the family to school’s front gate.

But few understand that there are

many more hurdles to overcome

before closure and commitment.

How can the registrar use their

expertise to complement the

enrolment process? What input

into the marketing strategy should

the registrar have? Negotiating a

workable outcome.

9.00 AMTHE OPEN FORUM: OVERCOMING LONELINESS and BURNING ISSUES

Registrars are professionally lonely.

Usually, there is only one on staff

and so they cannot discuss issues

with like-minded practitioners.

Delegates will be asked to note

the issue they would most like to

discuss with a colleague registrar at

the outset of the Conference. From

that input, a number of ‘like-minded’

syndicates will be established with a

list of the issues they are to resolve.

Each syndicate will report back to

the Conference with the solutions

and with the issues that remain

unresolved.

11.15 AM BEING CONFIDENT, THINKING QUICKLY ON MY FEET, AND NOT OVER-COMMITTING WHEN ASKED ABOUT A COMPETITOR’S STRENGTHS.The Registrar usually conducts the

‘closure’ interview. All the niceties

have been put on the table: the issue

now is commitment and closure

with an enrolment form signed. For

the sake of this exercise, we will

assume that the school wants the

enrolment. How should the registrar

manage the interview? Planning?

Confidence? Quick-thinking?

Neither over-committing nor under-

playing. Obtaining commitment and

a signature. Great skills to master

and employ.

Andrea McCall, Andrea McCall and Associates.

12.30PM LUNCH

1.30 PM “WINNING COMMITMENT”While more difficult today,

particularly as you are often

working with three generations,

there are golden rules for securing

family commitment early in the

family’s relationship with the

school. More difficult is retaining

that commitment across the whole

enrolment period but again, there

are some classic strategies to work

with.
