Florida’s Third-Period Goals Finish Devils, 4-3

Trenton, NJ – After the Devils surged in front of Florida with two goals late in the second period, the Everblades’ league-leading offense exploded for three goals within a 6:04 span early in the third period to give Florida a 4-3 victory over Trenton at Sun National Bank Center. The Devils’ record now stands at 12-14-0-2 as they fail to return to the .500 mark before the New Year, while Florida now has the second most points in the Eastern Conference, improving to 21-13-0-1.

After the teams traded chances in a scoreless first period, Matt Beca scored 8:13 into the second period to open the scoring and give Florida a 1-0 lead. But instead of Florida drawing momentum after striking for the game’s first tally, it was Trenton who controlled the play after Beca’s goal, scoring twice in the final 6:43 of the middle stanza to take its first lead

of the game. The Devils’ first marker was scored by Matt Lombardi, who recorded his eighth goal of the season by deflecting a shot from Taylor Vichorek past Florida goaltender Bobby Goepfert at 13:17. Lombardi’s score was assisted by Vichorek and Kory Nagy, who both now have assists in two straight games. Trenton’s go-ahead score was put past Goepfert by Jeff Prough, whose 10th goal of the season came by firing a one-time shot from the right hash mark off a set up by Dan Charleston and Kyle Kucharski. For Kucharski, it was his first point since rejoining the Devils December 4. The former Boston College Eagle had 21 points (8g, 13a) for Trenton in his rookie season a year ago.

After the Devils seemed to have gained control of the game by dominating the latter stages of the second period, the Florida line of Matt Beca, Mike McKenzie and Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll went to work, combining to score twice in 25 seconds in what proved to be the turning point of the game. All three forwards earned points on both the game-tying and go-ahead goals, with Lalonde-McNicoll scoring his third goal in the last two games to pull the Everblades even, and Mike McKenzie notching his sixth goal in the last six games to put Florida ahead.

The ECHL’s two leading scorers, Mitch Fadden and Francis Lemieux, combined on a nifty passing play 5:39 later to put Florida ahead, 4-2, with Lemieux burying his 14th goal after receiving a pass from Fadden at the right circle. The Devils propelled 11 third-period shots at Goepfert in an attempt to come back and finish 2010 on a good note, but were severely hampered by two penalties from Dan Charleston and Jeremy Akeson 22 seconds apart in the game’s final four minutes. Although Trenton prevented Florida from scoring during its lengthy five-on-three, the Devils missed out on valuable attack time by being forced to kill the penalty.

With Dave Caruso pulled for an extra attacker after the penalties expired, Justin Pender scored for the first time since opening night to make the score 4-3 with 26 seconds left in the final frame. Pender’s goal proved to be too little, too late, as Trenton was unable to generate any more offense in the game’s final two dozen seconds.

Having lost two of the first three games against Florida this season, the Devils have a chance to earn a split in the season series tomorrow night when they take on the Everblades for the final time this season. Puck drop at Sun National Bank Center is set for 7:00 p.m. After Saturday’s game the Devils travel to Charleston, SC for a three game series against the Stingrays January 7, 8 & 9.

GINAND Q&AAfter being named Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL

Player of the Week for December 13-19, on Thursday Ryan Ginand was named as Trenton’s representative at the 2011 ECHL All-Star Classic, to be played January 26 in Bakersfield. In his second professional season, Ginand leads the Devils in scoring and is tied for eighth in the ECHL with 32 points (13g, 19a). Ginand joined the Devils organization last season after a stint with the Herning Blue Fox of the Danish Elite League, with whom he made his pro debut with in 2009 following four seasons at Northeastern University. The Milford, MA native was born on April 1, 1986.

Q: Growing up, what was your favorite hockey team? Who was your favorite player?A: Even though I’m from the Boston-area, I was a huge Pittsburgh guy. I loved how Jaromir Jagr played.

Q: Since Jaromir Jagr was your favorite player, did you ever try to grow your hair like him?A: No way. I had to keep it classy.

Q: So you were a Pittsburgh hockey fan growing up

near Boston. Did you like other Pittsburgh sports teams?A: Not really. Even though I’m not really very territorial when it comes to being a sports fan, I still pulled for the Red Sox in baseball.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?A: Gino

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals?A: Not really. Some guys are crazy with that stuff, though. Like Jeff Prough has so many rituals that I can’t even remember them all. He knocks on his bedroom door the same amount of times before leaving his apartment, and does a bunch of things that don’t make any sense. I definitely don’t do anything like that.

Q: What is your favorite movie? Your favorite hockey movie?A: I’ll give two completely opposite answers. Let me go with The Prestige as my favorite movie and The Tooth Fairy as my favorite hockey movie.

Q: What is your favorite vacation spot?A: My family has a place on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. I like doing all sorts of outdoor

sports when I’m up there. I’m big into boating and surfing.

Q: If you could meet three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: Jesus Christ and George Washington would definitely be the first two. Those guys, they just walk into a room and everybody stops to listen to them. For the third person, I’m on the fence between Kate Beckinsale and Miley Cyrus. I think either one of them would be a nice change of pace from Washington and Jesus.

#16 Ryan Ginand is Trenton’s representative in the ECHL All-Star Classic in Bakersfield, CA January 26.

The Everblades’ top-ranked offense scored three times in the third period to beat the Devils, 4-3, the sixth time this year the ‘Blades have recorded victories after trailing in the third period.

Trenton’s November 23 win was followed by Florida’s first win in the season series the following night, when Bobby Goepfert stopped all 29 of Trenton’s shots to become the only opposing goalie to shut the Devils out this season, as part of a 3-0 Everblades win. The Florida Everblades are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lightning, and the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers (Carolina) and Norfolk Admirals (Tampa Bay).

The Everblades began play in the 1998-99 season, and have called Germain Arena home since the franchise’s inception. Germain Arena, originally known as TECO Arena (1998-2004), is located in Estero, Florida, a town of 9,500 in Lee County, 20 miles south of Ft. Myers. The Everblades have made the playoffs in all 12 years of their existence, but have never won a championship, falling just short by being eliminated in the Kelly Cup Finals in back-to-back seasons, in 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Everblades’ all-time record entering the 2010-11 season was 505-265-21-68, and they are among one of the most successful ECHL franchises over the past decade.

Greg Poss is in his first season as head coach of the Everblades, having taken over behind the Florida bench from Malcolm Cameron, who had coached the team the last two years. The Everblades are Greg Poss’ first North American coaching job, as the Green Bay, Wisconsin native had coached in Germany since the 1996-97 season. In Germany, Poss backed the Iserlohn Roosters, Nuermberg Ice Tigers and Manheim Eagles in Germany’s highest league, the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Poss began coaching following a three-season professional playing career, having suited up for the Maine Mariners (AHL) and Peoria Rivermen (IHL) between 1989 and 1992. Poss also played four seasons of collegiate hockey in his home state, lacing up the skates for the University of Wisconsin Badgers from 1985-1989.

The Everblades were named by their inaugural/current owner, Craig Brush, who was said to have named the team after reading about the Florida Everglades in a free issue of National Geographic magazine. Brush incorporated the geographic proximity of his team’s southwestern Florida location to Everglades National Park with the name of a former AHL franchise, the Kentucky Thoroughblades, to produce the incorporated name of “Everblades.”
