Digital Campus: IT, Media Management, and Innovation

Workshop Agenda

Vision: Why are we here?

The CDO is just another example of “we-must-have-a-chief” for every technology trend/development that comes along.

What do you mean by the “digital campus” – the academic experience? the more “business” side of academics? both?

Isn’t it all digital now? Why are we giving it a special label?

Isn’t the label “digital media” redundant? All media is digital at this point.

Is there a sea change underfoot, or is all of this focus on digital just a small ripple in the ocean?

What should the role of the CIO and his/her IT organizations be in all of this?

Survey Participants (15)

• Brown University• Cornell University• Duke University• Georgetown University• MIT• Pennsylvania State University• Princeton University• UC Berkeley• UC San Diego• University of Minnesota• University of Notre Dame• University of Southern California• University of Washington• Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University• Yale University

1. Does your campus have a formal digital strategy?2. What role does your CIO play in establishing,

supporting, and/or advancing your digital strategy?

3. Does your campus have a CDO?4. What is the primary reason your campus does not

have a CDO?5. What other reasons have contributed to the fact

that your campus does not have a CDO?6. What activities are emerging that previously were

not in the CIO portfolio, but might be in a CDO portfolio if you had a CDO?

Survey Questions

Yes13%

No, but we have talked about a digital strategy or

started to create one.27%

No, unaware such a thing was possible.13%

No, and “no thanks” – we don’t need one.

7%

Not quite, but we have developed some policies and guidance over some of our digital practices.

Q1: Does your campus have a formal digital strategy?

Q2: What role does your CIO play in establishing, supporting, and/or advancing the campus’ digital

strategy?

Yes13%

Not yet, but this is on the horizon and/or we have someone who is looking at lower level

digital issues.7%

No.67%

No, and “no thanks” – we don’t need one.

Q3: Does your campus have a Chief Digital Officer?

Q4: What is the primary reason your campus does not yet have a CDO?

Digital issues are handled adequately

by Central IT8%

Digital issues are handled

adequately by multiple of-fices across campus; the need to cen-

tralize under a CDO is not

pervasive or not possible.

62%

Other31%

Other: • We have a Chief Digital Learning

Officer dealing with On-Line Learning

• The focus has been on the development of a strategy vs. hiring a CDO

• The CIO is responsible.• We are still defining what

"digital" is and whether it is unique enough to warrant a separate role. So far, we don't think so.

• I as the CIO am fully capable of handling CDO responsibilities. We do not need another position.

0369

Q5: What other reasons have contributed to the fact that your campus has not yet appointed a CDO?

Other:• Really dealing with the issues around the academy and how

instruction will or won't change has been the biggest concern• Though most of the IT that would be part of the CDO portfolio

resides in central IT, the Libraries would want major involvement, so it is not clear where leadership would reside nor how to structure a CDO so s/he would be effective.

• There is no inclination that "digital" is a separate need • We don't have a conversation around CDO.• Digital issues are on the radar of executive leadership and are

addressed at a multitude of levels across the institution• Multiple groups across campus tend to address the parts of

digital that touch them but don't always think about collaborating proactively with other offices that could or should play a role.

• I do not appreciate the leading nature of these questions where a CDO is assumed to be needed.

02468

Q6: What activities are emerging that previously were not in the CIO portfolio, but might be in a

CDO portfolio if we had a CDO? Other: • Really again focused on the hybrid or

on-line degree space• All these are embraced under the CIO

role• Checked items are underway but the

checkmark does not imply that they should be in a CDO portfolio (answering first half of question only).

• Because the concept and conversation are at best nascent for us, not sure what to check.

• These are new initiatives that fall within the purview of the CIO's technology enhanced learning group.

• CIO is responsible for these activities, either solely or in partnership.

• All are already in the CIO portfolio.

• A formal digital strategy seems rare• Digital can be and is handled by the

CIO (as a driver and as a collaborator)

• Very few feel the need to appoint a CDO

Conclusions
