President’s Pen

26th August 2019

A night of chit-chat with our fellow Rotarians

from Palm Beach took place night at

The Well Tavern in Wellard.

https://www.thewelltavern.com.au/

The staff handled the large contingent in an

easy and pleasant manner so that we could enjoy

each other’s company. A photo gallery follows

including Stephen having returned from his travels.

News in this minute that Max and Diane arrived home last night as well.

Next week’s meeting being the first of the month is Guest Speaker free except

for Eric who will take the opportunity to explain Club Runner in more detail.

Also we would like to challenge a few members to bring along a Limerick to

share with everyone for a bit of fun. Here’s an example.

Limericks I cannot compose,

With noxious smells in my nose.

But this one was easy,

I only felt queasy,

Because I was sniffing my toes.

How is the Lid Collection going? Don’t forget to bring them along to Rotary

and put them in the blue bucket.

I’m pleased to report that Ann Samut is making steady progress in her recovery

and Greg Williams looks like a panda after an eye surgery yesterday but is also

recovering well.

Our thoughts go to Marge and Edd in their role as carer and we hope your

patients are not too demanding!!

Last night’s Citizenship Ceremony was full of surprises.

Two past members joined the ranks of Australians.

Congratulations Matt White and Cheryl DeSouza

Fine Session: Sgt. Cyril Bennett

No fine session.

Polio This Week 22nd August 2019

Nigeria marked three years since the last case of wild poliovirus (WPV) was detected within its borders. Because Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa, this milestone opens the door for the potential WPV-free certification of the entire WHO AFRO region after the Africa Regional Certification Commission (ARCC) evaluation as early as mid-2020. While this is an important programmatic milestone, the region has not yet been certified polio-free and It will be critical for polio program to maintain momentum. .

Summary of new viruses this week: Afghanistan — one wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case; Pakistan — one WPV1-positive environmental sample; Angola — one cVDPV2 case; Ghana — one cVDPVE2 case.

Rotary International announced on 3 June a three-year

partnership renewal with its disaster relief project partner,

ShelterBox. For almost 20 years, this unique humanitarian

alliance has supported families with a place to call home after disaster.

Rotary is a global network whose members take action to make a lasting difference in their communities

– and worldwide. ShelterBox provides emergency shelters and other essential items to support families

who have lost their homes in disaster.

What began as a local connection with one Cornish Rotary Club has led to an international movement

that’s provided 140,000 ShelterBox family tents or 390,000 ShelterKits worldwide to date (a value of

over £54 million).

First adopted as a millennium project by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in 2000, the support of

Rotary members and clubs around the world saw ShelterBox become Rotary’s Project Partner in Disaster

Relief in 2012. Since then, the partnership has helped transform ShelterBox into an internationally

recognized disaster relief charity, supporting families with emergency shelter after disaster.

“While having their evening dinner together, a little girl looked up at her father and asked,

“Daddy, you’re the boss in our family, right?”

The father was very pleased to hear it and confidently replied, “Yes, my little princess.” The girl then

continued, “ Is that because mommy put you in charge?”

Joe: What does your father do for a living?

Jon: He’s a magician. He performs tricks, like sawing people in half.

Joe: Do you have any brothers or sisters?

Jon: Yep, four half-sisters and a half-brother.

Martin had just received his brand new drivers license. The family troops out to the driveway, and

climbs in the car, where he is going to take them for a ride for the first time. Dad immediately heads

for the back seat, directly behind the newly minted driver.

“I’ll bet you’re back there to get a change of scenery after all those months of sitting in the front

passenger seat teaching me how to drive,” says the beaming boy to his father.

“Nope,” comes dad’s reply, “I’m gonna sit here and kick the back of your seat as you drive, just like

you’ve been doing to me all these years.”

A small boy was at the zoo with his father. They were looking at the tigers, and his father was telling

him how ferocious they were.

“Daddy, if the tigers got out and ate you up…”

“Yes, son?” the father asked, ready to console him.

“ …Which bus would I get to go home?”

I would give you what you really want on Father’s Day, but I can’t afford to move out yet.

Dad, your father’s day gift is another year of not having to pay for my wedding.

I smile because you are my father. I laugh because there is nothing you can do about it.
