Greetings to Everyone from your Stand-In Bulletin Editor,

The Kwinana Festival was a most successful day for our Club. Despite a number

of members being either away or unavailable, we still had a good turn-out of

members and partners to help with the Chocolate Wheel on the day. Matt White

did a great job as spin master of the wheel, with the loan of a microphone system

from a neighbouring stall-holder being a godsend in terms of saving his voice!

The evening concert and fireworks was a great finish to the event.

The next few weeks are shaping up to be busy, with the Presidents’ Car Rally,

combined visit at our hall with Rockingham and Palm Beach Clubs, school

graduation ceremonies to attend, and other end-of-year functions. President Elect

James Sharkey will soon be organizing his team for 2013-2014, so members are

encouraged to consider what role they are interested in for that year.

We have commenced preparations for the 2013 Rotary Global Swimarathon to

help raise funds for End Polio Now. The scheduled date will be Saturday 23

October is Rotary Vocational Service Month

Vocational Service focuses on:

Rotarians

President Edd Samut

The President’s Pen

Our guest speaker for tonight was PP Genevieve Carr, who gave us a thumbnail talk about herself.

(From birth up till now—she said she was born “ I believe”.) Actually she has had a very

interesting and an eventful life so far. (Still takes after her Dad, PDG Brian - had to put the stop

watch on her! With all jokes aside it was a great talk. Thanks, Gen.

Thanks to all who helped out at the Kwinana Festival. Not going to say too much about the results

for the day, but I assure you it was a great success. Good to see our GSE candidate, Alexi Peacock,

was there to give us a helping hand. (PP Harry will have more to say on this event later on in his

report.)

Message received from Max Bird regarding the well in the village of Soikiki (East Timor-Leste).

President Elect James to report further in his report.

AG Bob Thompson and President Elect James Sharkey attended The District Future Vision

Training which was held on Saturday 27th

October, and on Sunday 28th

October President Elect

James also attended the PEPS day. (Well done, guys.)

Kwinana Festival photos are on the Rotary Club of Kwinana Facebook page and are also in the

Rotary Out West news. (I wonder who put them there???)

There was a short AGM Meeting after our normal Club meeting. The purpose for this was for the

Club’s audited financial accounts for the previous financial year. (SO 22 and it was accepted.)

After the AGM there was a short Board Meeting. The Board approved permission for DG Bob

Cooper and Wendy to use the equipment in the Village Markets van for a community function

next Sunday 4/11/12 as the Homestead Ridge Progress Association is celebrating its 20th

year on

this date with a sundowner in Wellard Park between 4pm and 7pm.

PP Matt White Community PM requested $100.00 toward the food hamper – Board approved.

Have a great week

President Edd.

successful, but busy! We raised a total of $919.90. A huge thanks

to Chris Iriks, Diane Bird, Ann Samut, Julie Tebbutt, Derryl

Wallhead, Deryl Wallhead, John Wallhead, Harry Tebbutt.

Festival Fair Day Saturday 27th

October was very successful.

Thanks to all members who assisted on that day. We raised a

total of $2350 via the chocolate wheel; this included three $3

spins, nineteen $2 spins and eleven $1 spins. The coffee man in

the stall next to us very kindly allowed us to use his loudspeaker,

which made life easier for Matt, our master spinner for the day.

A letter of thanks will be sent to him.

On Sunday 4th

November the BBQ trailer will be utilized at the

Homestead Ridge 20th

Anniversary celebration.

A reminder about food served at our barbeques: need to check

that food is hot prior to serving; also need to be careful that we

aren’t cooking too much food at a time, thus causing food to go

cold whilst in the trays.

General Business

John Wallhead raised a query as to whether we will be involved with the Bowelscan project next year. Last week’s Weekly District News issue included information regarding the proposal for Bowelscan to be a Multi-District project.

John Dixon: currently needing to take things easy+++

Matt White: we have another week to collect tins of food for Foodbank; to purchase $100 worth of cans, etc. to boost our donation (approved by Board).

John Iriks: confirming that Club members have had adequate notice of our AGM, due to it being listed on the Club calendar.

Genevieve: the lotto winnings are steadily trickling in – we won $9 last week, and $41 this week!

Guest Speaker – Genevieve Carr

“Thumbnail Speech”

How would I describe my life? In a nutshell it can be likened to a rollercoaster ride – full of ups

and downs, brief periods of calm and then some sudden twists and turns.

I was born on 3 January 1968 in the small northern Victorian town of Pyramid Hill. My parents

and two older brothers had recently moved from Melbourne to the town as Dad worked as District

Engineer for the Rural Water Commission. As I was the first baby born in town for that year, the

hospital ran up a flag to mark the event (or so I have been told!). The hospital happened to be the

only air-conditioned building in town at that time, and because that summer was a particularly hot

one, my mother found herself being inundated with visitors from town who were trying to get some

relief from the heat.

After living in Pyramid Hill for six months, our family around to several other country towns in

Victoria – Kerang, Ouyen (where my younger brother was born) and Tongala – before moving back

to Melbourne in 1974. We lived in a relatively small house in Cheltenham for about eighteen

months, then moved to another house in Mentone where my parents still live to this day.

Hobbies and interests as a youngster included reading, dancing (ballet/tap/jazz) and choir

singing. I was by no means a competitive athlete! At around mid-secondary schooling, the

pressure was on to decide subjects and future directions. This happened to be during the 1980s, at a

time of great competition and messages of “strive, strive, strive!!!”, and when girls were being

encouraged to consider alternatives to the traditional female-dominated areas of work. Hence I

elected to study maths and sciences, and with the thought that I wanted to later study medicine. I

didn’t obtain enough marks from Year 12 to get into medicine at university, and so commenced

studying radiography in 1986. During that year I was convinced that I still wanted to be either a

doctor or some form of therapy-giver; after working hard that year I received an offer into the

course of physiotherapy. In truth I knew little about physiotherapy other than it was a well-

regarded course and deemed to be most satisfying, and so I put my head down and studied

frenetically. This was all very well until I found myself to be feeling extremely burnt out during

final year, which made completing the course somewhat difficult. However, I eventually got there

(much to everyone’s relief!).

Upon finishing study I took up a job at the hospital in the town of Hamilton in western Victoria,

right in the midst of sheep farming country. This gave me a good general round of physiotherapy

experience. However, after two years the job situation in Victoria was not looking good, and so for

both professional and personal reasons I moved to Perth in 1994. I took up part-time work at the

physiotherapy practice in Kwinana, and combined it with other part-time work at the MS Society

(where I met former Club member Wilf Rybak) and at a nursing home in East Fremantle. In 1995 I

had the opportunity to buy into the physiotherapy practice as a partner, and thus embarked on a new

course of learning, much of which was by trial and error due to having no formal business training.

While working at the practice, I was first introduced to the Rotary Club of Kwinana. On one

occasion I was treating a patient who mentioned that he was about to go to a Rotary meeting; after

some conversation I was invited to attend a meeting as a Guest Speaker, and the rest, as they say, is

history!

In 1999 I started going out with Damian, having briefly met him several years earlier. By the

end of that year we were planning a wedding and future together. We were married on 9 September

2000, and had the pleasure of having several Club members present to share our day. In June 2001

our son Josh was born, and so a new chapter and set of challenges started for us.

Within a matter of months it became apparent that trying to run a business did not blend well

with having a young family, and so the most suitable course of action was for me to sell my share

of partnership. This eventually happened in June 2004, and soon afterwards we were expecting

Matthew, who was born at the end of March 2005. Shortly before Matthew’s birth, we learnt that

Josh had autism and hence we commenced a whole new learning curve involving understanding the

disorder, intervention therapy, and management strategies. This journey was further extended when

Page 9: District 9465 Western Australia Chartered: 22 April 1971 ... · PETScapade 2012 will be on Sunday 11th November, Village We have a Handicamp attendee from Kwinana; still looking for

Matthew was also diagnosed with autism. However, we have been very lucky in terms of the level

of support from teachers, therapists and friends.

Having two children having additional needs, in order to maintain my own professional skills I

needed a job that would be flexible and family-friendly. For this reason I accepted a job offer in

late 2005 working for Brightwater Care Group at one of their aged care facilities which was situated

in Mandurah. I initially thought that this job of working with the elderly would be one of low

pressure, but soon discovered otherwise! Shortly after commencing work I became involved in

manual handling training of staff and other occupational health and safety issues, as well as working

dealing with the specific needs of residents. In some ways it was rather ironical that after ten years

of working in private practice where much of my job had involved treating people who had been

injured at work, I was now heavily involved in preventing people from being injured in the first

place. Seven years are commencing work at Brightwater, I am still there as I found the job to be

most rewarding, with much to learn from dealing with the elderly. One significant aspect of appeal

was the fact that all staff were working together for the common good – that being the needs of our

residents. Another aspect was the whole person-centered philosophy of seeing a individual as a

whole, and not simply defining them in terms of their physical condition; this helped me with

dealing with my children’s situation and thus I became a strong advocate for saying that such

children were “people with autism”, and not simply “autistic people”.

In conclusion, what vocational advice would I give to younger people based on my own

experience? Firstly, I would encourage them to take the time to get to know themselves, including

understanding their greatest strengths. I would also be encouraging them to consider what they

truly want versus what they feel is expected of them. Finally, I would encourage them to consider

what type of work is likely to bring out the best in their personality, thus flowing on to influence

health and relationships. My theme song? Anything Can Happen, from the musical Mary Poppins.

Never underestimate the attitude and ability of an elderly person!

Max Bird has established a water supply to the school area in the village of

Soikili. A syphon pipe has been assembled to run water from the water source

for the Kwinana pump at the top of the hill to within 50m of the primary

school, a distance of some 400 metres. This is very close to the position of the

capped borehole which the Kwinana team was working on during their visit in

October 2011. The hand pump at the Soikili was also found to be not working

and was repaired and left in good working order.

Max was unable to carry out tests on the water filtration unit as the

contaminated water ponds had dried up. The water filtration unit has been

installed at the health clinic in Lautem where testing of the unit will be

continued.

The Seeds of Life bore at Deseli (Baucau) was finished off with 38m of bore

casing installed, and the bore sealed ready for the outfitting of the pump by

others.

A new bore at Larga orphanage was put down to 10m striking water at 9m; this

bore will be finished and have a pump installed in early May 2013. This is

required due to the existing pipeline having been cut, leaving 150 orphans and

400 schoolchildren needing to walk 2km to get water for drinking, bathing and

cooking.

Max will be giving a more detailed explanation of his recent trip to Timor

during Club Meeting on Monday 5th

November.

Future Vision Grants Seminar James Sharkey

The Future Vision Plan is The Rotary Foundation’s new model to support

district and club projects.

The Rotary Foundation identified a growing need to streamline its operations

for improved efficiency and focus its efforts to achieve greater impact and

public recognition.

All Rotary Clubs will adopt the Future Vision Plan in July 2013.

Under Future Vision, the Foundation offers two types of grants: district

grants and global grants.

District Grants

District grants fund short-term projects and activities, either local or

international, that support the Foundation’s mission. Clubs submit their

funding requests to the District, which administers and distributes the funds.

Global Grants

Global grants offer opportunities to participate in strategically focused high

impact activities with support from the Foundation ranging from US$15000

to US$200000.

Global grants fund large-scale projects that respond to a need that the

benefitting community has identified. The project must also include the

active participation of the benefitting community. The project must be

designed to allow the community to help itself after the Rotary Club has

concluded its work and the project must have measurable results. Therefore

projects must be sustainable, measurable and community-driven.

Areas of focus

Projects that receive Global Grant funds from The Rotary Foundation should

fall under at least one of the following areas of focus:

Peace and conflict prevention

Disease prevention and treatment

Water and sanitation

Maternal and child health

Basic education and literacy

Economic and community development
