About Kota District
Historically, Kota was the part of ‘Bundi’ which was a Rajput territory. Kota became ahallmark of the Rajput gallantry and culture when it became separate princely state inthe 17th century. Madho Singh became its ruler. In Pre Independence days, socialactivist Guru Radha Kishan (a social activist) and other prominent freedom fightersworked here.
Geographically, the district has a total geographical area of 5,217 sq km and occupiesthe rank 24th in the state and 206 th in India on this basis. It lies at 25 °17'N latitude, 75°85'E longitude and 271 m altitude . It is bounded by Bundi District on the North , byBaran District on the East , by Jhalawar District on the South , and byChittaurgarhDistrict on the West. Cotton, millet, wheat, rice, pulses, coriander andoilseeds are main crops of the region. It is situated at a center of Hadoti and on thebank of Chambal River. Chambal River makes a natural boundary and separates Kotadistricts from Sawai Madhopur, Tonk and Bundi. The district has several canals to makeit green. As per data recorded in the year 2015, the forest covers to 11.26% of the totalgeographical area of the district. The actual rainfall in the district was 810.4 mm in theyear of 2015-16.
Administratively, the district is divided into 5 sub-districts. It has 11 towns 874 villages.The district of Kota came into existence in the state of Rajasthan with an allotteddistrict code of 127. Kota is its district Headquarter which is located at a distance of 256km from the State Capital. Hindi is its administrative language. There are 1 parliamentaryand 6 assembly constituencies in the district.
Demographically, according to 2011 census, the district comprises a total number of3,79,825 households with a total of 19,51,014 including 10,21,161 are males and9,29,853 are females and causes it to the rank 16 th in the State and 239 th in India.The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 24.39% with 23.46% aremales and 25.42% are females. The density of population of the district is 374 personsper sq km. The sex ratio is at 911 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio standsat 899 (females per 1000 males). The schedule caste population of the district isrecorded as 4,05,408 including 2,11,161 are males and 1,94,247 are females. Thepercentage of Schedule Caste is 3.32%. The schedule tribe population is 1,83,816including 96,428 are males and 87,388 are females. The percentage of Schedule Tribe is1.99%. The major religions in the district are Hindu at 85.15% and Muslim at 12.51% ofthe total population.
Economically, agriculture is the backbone of the district. Kota has four power stations.First is Rajasthan atomic power plant, second is Kota Thermal Power plant, third is AntaGas Power plant, and the fourth is Jawahar Sagar Power plant (hydraulic power plant).Tourist industry is also a main source of income for the people of the district. Cottonindustry, oil industry Atta mills etc are also available there. The district is home to Asia'sbiggest manufacturer of fertilizer. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during2011-12 was Rs 13,15,773 lakh at Current Price and Rs 7,53,828 lakh at Constant (2004-05) Prices. The NDDP, or Net District Domestic Product during 2011-12 was Rs 11,81,343lakh at Current Price and Rs 6,58,568 lakh at Constant (2004-05) Prices. The Per CapitaIncome or NDDP, at factor cost during 2011-12 was Rs. 62,277 at Current Price and Rs34,718 at Constant (2004-05) Prices.

Educationally, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 76.56% out ofwhich 86.31% are males and 65.87 % are females. The total literate population of thedistrict is 12,98,345 comprising 7,65,396 are males and 5,32,949 are females. It is nowthe hub of educational institutions. It is the best place for coaching of IIT-JEE andmedical entrance exam. The main universities of the district are Government MedicalCollege, Rajasthan Technical University, Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University,University of Kota, Indian Institute of Information Technology, University EngineeringCollege, Career Point University, etc. Major Coaching Institutions are Vibrant Academy,Allen Career Institute, Aakash Institute, and Career Point, etc.
Govind Singh Gurjar was born on March 9th , 1932 in Kota. He was an advocate and thenjoined politics. He became the Chairman of Nasirabad Cantonment Board in 1977. He wassix time MLA in Nasirabad. He was also the former Minister of Rajasthan. He was MLA inRajasthan Constituency from 1980 to 2003. He became Lt. Governor of Puducherry inMarch 2008. He died on 6th April 2009 in Delhi.
There are a number of places which attract to tourist from worldwide. These includesome historical and religious monuments. These places are Chambal Gardens, BrijrajBhawan Palace, Sitabari, Kishore Sagar, Baroli, Umed Bhawan Palace, City Fort Palace,Darrah Wildlife Sanctuary, Sawan Phuhar Waterpark, Jagmandir Palace, Rao Madho SinghMuseum and Godavari D ham Temple. During the year 2015, there were 2,574 foreigntourists and 90,598 domestic tourists who visited the district.
The district has several other personalities from different fields. Squadron Leader AjayAhuja was a fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force. In the Kargil war of 1999, he was killedby the Pakistani forces. He was the part of Operation Safed Sagar in Kargil. He wasawarded with Vir Chakra on August 15, 1999 by the Government of India. Nikita Lalwaniis a novelist born in Kota. Her main books are Gifted and The Village. Prabhu LalBhatnagar was born on August 8th , 1912. He was an Indian mathematician. He is famousfor his contribution to the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook operator used in Lattice Boltzmannmethods (LBM). He died on 5th October, 1976. Shritama Mukherjee was born on 3 rd
November, 1993 in Kota. She is an Indian television actress and mainly known for DekhaEk Khwaab and Vinita 'Vinnie'.
