SOMERSETWEST: LUCKY TO ESCAPEWITHONLY EIGHT STITCHES
Armedrobberattacksman
NIKITA SYLVESTER
Luckily I only got eight stitches and not a bullet
in my forehead, said a Somerset West resident
and businessman after he was assaulted and held
at gunpoint at his home.
The resident (64), whose name is being withheld for
investigation purposes, recalled his close encounter
with death, when at around 06:45 on Thursday 4April,
anunknownmanstormedintohisoffice,wavinga fire-
arm.
I was working at the computer in my office, when
suddenly my dog that was with me, started barking
furiously. I saw someone walk past the window and
as I got up, he was already inside pointing a firearm
in my face, he said.
He remembered how he pushed the door closed, but
the assailant pushed it open again, still pointing the
firearm directly at him.
A struggle ensued as the resident fought desperately
to push the suspect through the door.
He hit me over the head a few times, I assume with
the gun. I asked him what he wanted, but he never
spoke a single word the entire time. He saw that I was
going to fight him and with all the commotion and the
dogs incessant barking, he ran away, he explained.
Headded that as the suspect fled, henoticed twomen
leaving his premises.
I didnt know whether the gun was loaded or not,
but under the circumstances you do not query that.
Im just fortunate that it didnt end tragically.
Theresidentgavehis fullestpraise to thepoliceserv-
ice, who he said was exceptional. He was surprised
at how theymanaged to get all the various role players
together so quickly paramedics, forensics, police of-
ficers, as well as a helicopter circling the area.
Somerset West police spokesperson, constable Su-
zan Jantjies, confirmed that during the search-and-ar-
rest operation, a 53-year-old suspect had been arrested
that morning. The other suspect is still at large.
Shesaid thatnothingwas taken,butpoliceare inves-
tigating a case of house robbery.
Jantjies added that a green vehicle with a CA regis-
tration was spotted in the vicinity of the residence.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Somerset
West Magistrates Court soon.
Anyone with information can phone detective war-
rant officer, Alfonzo van der Merwe on 021 850 1344.

The resident was hit over the head a few times,
with what is believed to be the firearm. He got
eight stitches.
In the back seat of the vehicle is the suspect who was arrested in the vicinity of
the crime scene shortly after the crime had been reported.

Commuterunable to
reclaim stolen car
NICOLE MCCAIN
After his car was stolen, a Strand man
was shocked to see an almost identical
car go on sale only a day later.
Peter Bester parked his VW Fox at the
Strand train station on 4April at 05:15 and
when he returned after 18:00 his car was
gone. Bester, who reported a case of theft
at the Strandpolicewas surprised, howev-
er, to see an advert for what he claims is
his car on the website Gumtree the next
day.
Bester alerted the police, and he and the
investigation officer went to see the car.
Bester identified severalmarks and stains
in the interior of the carwhich he says his
car had, such as a tear on the upholstery
on the drivers seat. However, the investi-
gating officer checked the licence disk and
pronounced the man selling the car to be
the legitimate owner.
Bester says the police officer did not
check thecarspapers, theenginenumber,
or the chassis number.
Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesper-
son for the Strand police, says to establish
the ownership of a vehicle police check
ownership papers, on which the chassis
and engine numbers will appear. These
match the numbers found on the vehicle.
Bester, feeling helpless after the inci-
dent, contacted DistrictMail, who in turn
enquired what procedures the police had
followed. Mafuna confirmed that the car
had been impounded after the District-
Mailsenquiry,andmaintains thecardoes
not belong to Bester.
I can confirm that the investigating of-
ficer did view the vehicle andmade the de-
cision that the vehicle he viewed was not

this query and Mr Bester, the previous

Did police double-park for shopping?
A DistrictMail reader became hot under
the collar last week after a police vehicle
double-parked in Beach Road, Strand so
that the officers could go shopping.
The reader, FrancoisKuhn, sayshewas
parked in Beach Road, Strand, near KFC
at 17:50 on Monday 1 April when he saw
this.
He claims the police van made a U-turn
in themiddle of the street and thenparked
next tohis carand thevehiclebehindhim,
which were parallel parked.
The officers then got out of the vehicle
to do some shopping at the R5 Market.
They shopped for about 5 minutes, after
which they got back into their vehicle and
drove off, Kuhn recalls, adding that the
police van almost hit a white Hyundai i20
as they left.
Const Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson
for Strand SAPS, elaborated on the cir-
cumstances surrounding the incident,
claiming the officers were responding to
a complaint.
We investigated the incident and
found two of our vehicles responded to a
complaint. The policemen double- parked
not to cause any inconvenience, but be-
cause there was no other parking availa-
ble.
He added that the complaint the officer
wasattendingtoalsodemandedurgentpo-
lice intervention. The public should bear
in mind that when officers of the law re-
spond to complaints, parking space is not
always available.
Police officers never know what is
waiting for them when they are called on
to assist. We need to respond to the com-
plaint quickly, without breaching the
publics safety or causing inconven-
ience.

Cityopposes toll project
NIKITA SYLVESTER
Following the ongoing dispute regarding
the South African Roads Agency Limit-
eds (Sanral) proposed N1/N2 Winelands
Toll Highway project, the City of Cape
Town have now filed an urgent applica-
tion for an interdict.
Aspreviously reportedby theDistrictMail,
Sanral inrecentyearsproposed theconstruc-
tionof six toll plazason twoof theCitysmain
highways, the N1 and N2.
Sanrals reasons for the urgency to imple-
ment the toll road projectwas that they need-
ed to upgrade and maintain the road and ad-
dress safety concerns.
Through our own investigation, those
purported reasonshave proven to be ground-
less and exaggerated, said Citys Mayco
member for transport, roads and stormwater
Brett Herron. According to Herron the inter-
dict application will be heard in theWestern
Cape High Court on 16 May, when the City
will seekanordertoprohibitSanral fromtak-
inganystepstoimplementtheirproposedtoll
road project.
About a month ago Sanral informed the
City that they intendproceedingwith the toll
project. Herron said that this action is still
pending as Sanral has failed to provide the
Citywithacomplete recordofdocuments rel-
evant to the toll road project, including how
much the project will cost and what the toll
fees are likely to be. Its obstructive and se-
cretive conduct is a cause for alarm. Its exag-
gerated claims that theN1 andN2 are in dan-
gerof fallingapartunless the toll roadproject
is implemented, is shocking and opportunis-
tic. We condemn their manipulation of the
facts for thepurposes of advancinga toll road
project, said Herron.
The Citys application to compel Sanral to
disclose these documents, instituted five
days before Sanrals notice to the City (on 1
March), will now also be heard at the same
time as the Citys urgent interdict applica-
tion on 16 May.

Contractordumps
rubblenext to river
NIKITA SYLVESTER
Strand resident Eric Prinsloo ex-
pressed mixed feelings about the pav-
ing work at Goedehoop cemetery in
Strand last week.
He explained he was initially pleased
with theefficientworkdoneby themunici-
pality by paving the entrance to the ceme-
tery.
However, he said his joy was short-lived
afternoticing that thecontractorswhohad
completed the job had dumped the excess
paving material alongside the Lourens
River.
I didnt see it being dumped there, but
when I had a closer look at the rubble I
could see that it was the same kind of pav-
ing that had been used at the Goedehoop
cemetery, said Prinsloo.
Ward 83 councillor, Dave Venter con-
firmedthat thecontractorassigned topave
the area at the cemetery was responsible
for the dumping.
According to Venter a misunderstand-
ing between municipal officials and the
contractor seems to be the reason for the
dumping. He pointed out that the initial
agreement was that the contractor would
dump the excess building sand only into
a hole in the park next to Lourens River.
Thecontractor thendumpedall theunused
building material and not only sand into
the hole.
Officialshave instructedthecontractor
to immediately remove all the building
rubble and only leave building sand be-
hind, said Venter.
He confirmed on Wednesday morning
that contractors would be returning to the
areaduring thecourseof theday toremove
the building material which they had
dumped along the Lourens River.

When it was close enough, I managed to
capture it and pull the tops sleeve over its
head to keep it calm so that itwouldnt be able
to hurt itself or us, explained Allan.
Having no knife or scissors, he had to bite
loose the fish gut which was attached to the
flotation device and was trailing about 10 m
behind the goose. As he was about to release
the goose, he noticed another piece of fishing
line which was fastened to a steel trace at-
tached to a fish hook, lodged under the skin
of the goose.
I successfully removed the trace, but was
unable to remove the hook from under the
gooses right wing. I then decided to take the
goose to the Animal Hospital in the Strand.
As the hospital was already closed for the
day,Allanphoned the emergencynumber dis-
played on the facade of thehospital. Fortunate-
ly, the veterinarian on call was at Altena Ani-
mal Hospital, where they immediately rushed
the injured goose to.
According toDr IngridLester, the veterinar-
ian at the Altena Animal Hospital, the goose
was sedated in order to remove the fish hook.
Thewoundwas cleanedand the goose received
antibiotics. Although the goose was a bit
stressed when we got to the hospital, it was
back to its old self when it was released and
reunitedwith its family at the damonTuesday
morning, said Lester.
Allan advises people to refrain from fishing
at the dam since the area is inundated with
birds andaccidents suchas this one, arebound
to happen.
Craig Lester, manager of the Altena Animal Hospital, with the injured goose and Emma-Kate
Otte who observed the whole procedure to remove the fish hook.

Fish fromtheoceanarebecomingan
increasingly scarce resource.
So many laws and restrictions
have been put in place to protect
many of these fish species in an ef-
fort to ensure that they will be
around for some time to come.
It is therefore so very sad when
recreational anglers, who by now
should know the laws, break them
on a regular basis.
A shore angler reported that dur-
ing the recent run of fish along our
coastline he saw several anglers
keeping and hiding undersized fish.
These anglers should be reported
so that this practice can be stopped.

Geskroeideparadys
Twee jaar gelede in April 2011, het n ver-
woestende brand die Wes-piek in die Hel-

Daar het niks oorgebly van die woude fyn-

Beach clean-up
On Saturdaymorning 6 April, about 20 Helder-
berg residents made their way to Strand beach
to take part in a clean-up mission.
One of the organisers, Cris Robertson said
that the tide had washed up an enormous
amount of garbage onto the beach.
We collected plastics like bottles, bottle
caps, straws, bags, sweet wrappers, chip pack-
ets and so on, but the most astonishing (and
disgusting) was the number of cigarette butts.
In just fifteen metres along the tide-line, a
whole refuse packet was filled, amounting to
around a thousand cigarette butts, said Rob-
ertson.
He said that despite few people pitching up,
the operation is always a success if anyone
turns up, it isnt about cleaning the beach, its
aboutgettingout thereasacommunity, involv-
ing the family and taking responsibility of the
natural beauty weve been gifted.
The next beach clean-up will be taking place
on Saturday 4 May, every first Saturday of the
month. Formore information contact Gregory

eerder kontant. Definisie van n krediet-
