A Bulletin Reflection by
Fr Thomas Hosington
https://catholicdioceseofwichita.org/
reflections/2019-11-03/
Out of the 52 Sundays of the Church year, more than thirty are Sundays
in Ordinary Time. When we reach these “Thirty-something” weeks, the
Church’s liturgical year is drawing to a close. During these final weeks,
the Church focuses on what are called “the Last Things”: that is, realities
commonly associated with the end of the world. The Last Things are
Heaven, Hell, death and judgment.
Nonetheless, the Gospel on this 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time is not
dramatic or apocalyptic. It’s a simple story about Jesus and a fellow of
short stature named Zacchaeus. Yet the simplicity of this story helps us
relate to it. We might be impressed or even awed by dramatic stories
about the end times, but it’s hard—once we return to the ordinary grind of
daily life—to convince ourselves that such stories have much to do with
us. But the story about Zacchaeus is easier for us to relate to because
it’s such a humble story.
Look at Zacchaeus. He is a rich collector of taxes. Each of us, like him,
is attached to worldly things. Zacchaeus (meaning you) wants to see who
Jesus is, but Zacchaeus has two strikes against him.
The first strike against Zacchaeus is the crowd, because everyone wants
to see Jesus. It’s easy to get lost and to feel unloved when you’re in the
middle of a crowd. You might ask, “How can Jesus love everyone?” The
second strike against Zacchaeus is his small size, which may represent
the size of our souls. You might feel unworthy of God’s love and ask,
“How could Jesus love me, as small as I am?”
That’s why Zacchaeus climbs up into a sycamore tree to see Jesus. This
is all Zacchaeus wants: simply to see Jesus. But that’s not enough for
Jesus. This reveals to us an important point about the spiritual life. God
always wants more for us than we want for ourselves. The question,
then, is whether we’re willing to do what’s needed to accept what God
wants for us.
This brings us to the turning point in Sunday’s Gospel passage. When
Jesus reached the place where Zacchaeus had climbed the tree, Jesus
looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly; for today I must stay
at your house.” Jesus takes the initiative to reach out to this individu-
al. Likewise, just as he reached out to this little sinner, he is trying to
reach into your life.
This passage illustrates the point and purpose of the spiritual life: that
God would dwell within us, and from within, transform us. This is the
point of listening to God in the Liturgy of the Word at Holy Mass: to come
down from our self-regard and allow Jesus to enter our home—to enter
our soul—in order to transform us from within through the grace of the
Eucharist in Holy Communion.
In the last sentence of today’s Gospel passage, Jesus offers Zacchaeus
hope. Zacchaeus knew that he was coming up short in life, but he didn’t
know if Jesus would offer him what he was lacking. Jesus responds by
declaring, “the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”

Gospel Reading: Luke 19:1-10
Jesus stays at the house of Zacchaeus, the tax collector.
Background on the Gospel Reading: In Jesus' day, tax collectors were
not popular people. They were collaborators with the Romans and were
despised by many Jewish people. The tax system allowed them to charge
more than what was required so that they could make a profit for them-
selves. Thus, they were considered
sinners by their countrymen. Observers
in the crowd that day grumble because
Jesus dines with a sinner. Throughout
Scripture, Jesus' choice of dinner com-
panions set him apart from other ob-
servant Jews of his time. In first century
Jewish culture, to dine together was to
show a bond of fellowship and peace
among those at the table. Observant Jews did not generally dine with for-
eigners and sinners. Yet, Jesus chooses to honor the tax collector, Zac-
chaeus, by staying at his house.
Even before Jesus comes to his home, Zacchaeus shows himself to be
someone in search of salvation. Zacchaeus, described as short in stature,
climbs a tree in order to see Jesus. We know from Luke's description that
Zacchaeus was no ordinary tax collector; he was, in fact, the chief tax col-
lector and a person of some wealth. In his search for salvation, he humbled
himself by making a spectacle of himself by climbing a tree.
Jesus recognizes the faith of this tax collector exhibited in his search for
salvation and calls him down from the tree. In the hospitality he extends to
Jesus and in his conversion of heart, Zacchaeus is raised up by Jesus as a
model of salvation.

Prayers of the Faithful, Sunday, November 3, 2019
The Lord is with us, and today salvation has come to our house. This gives
us confidence now to pray.
That our Holy Father and all bishops may always be given the grace to be
good and faithful Shepherds.
For the priests serving in this Diocese, that they will keep the faith.
For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in this Diocese, that
they will run the race well.
That world leaders may seek always the wisdom, mercy, and strength that
come from God alone.
That like Zaccheus, our knowledge of Jesus may lead us to be generous to
the poor, as well as to all the weak, the neglected, and the unborn.
That we may imitate our Lord’s compassionate care for the sick, and show
them that their lives are just as precious and valuable as when they are
healthy.
That the deceased members of our families may be welcomed into the
presence of God's love for eternity.
Stewardship Prayer
Praised are you, O God, our loving creator
and giver of all good gifts. Bless our parish,
strengthen our faith and grant us the spirit of
Christian stewardship so that we may give
generously of our time in worship and prayer,
our talent, and our treasure to the spread of
Your kingdom here in our Church and
throughout the world. This we ask through
Jesus Christ, Your son, our Lord, who lives,
and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one
God now and forever. Amen
Prayers for the Sick
Almighty and Everlasting God, the
eternal salvation of those who be-
lieve in You, hear us on behalf of
Your servants who are sick, for whom
we humbly beg the help of your mer-
cy, so that, being restored to health,
they may render thanks to you in
your Church. Through Christ our
Lord. Amen

STEWARDSHIP
MATTERS...
Dear Parishioners,
During our 4-week stew-
ardship drive, we reflected
on many things. Here’s a
brief recap:
Prequel – We completed a Stewardship Survey
Form and shared the results – the majority of those
who participated last year, AGREED that their faith
increased, they understood our Parish Ministries and
knew where their treasure was spent.
Week 1 – We examined Who is a Christian Stew-
ard. Deacon Rick discussed the importance of TIME
IN PRAYER and we learned that stewardship is a way
of living. We began saying the Stewardship Prayer
at the beginning of Mass.
Week 2 – We saw TALENT in action –
The Media Ministry showed the new video
called ITS TIME about praying the Angelus.
We received an Angelus prayer card.
A Ministry Catalog was distributed -- detailing the
many ministries at Divine Mercy and what they
do.
Week 3 – Deacon James talked about sharing
our TREASURE and the importance of giving our first
fruits to God.
AND NOW.....This weekend is our GIVING DAY and
we will complete our annual stewardship commit-
ment form; we will share what we plan to give back
to God through our Parish in the upcoming year. Our
God will never be outdone, so be generous with your
time, talent and treasure.
This Stewardship Drive cannot be successful with-
out the support of our Pastor and faithful parishion-
ers who have supported Divine Mercy Parish for
many years. Our recent 10 Year Anniversary reflect-
ed the love we have for our Parish. And our new pa-
rishioners will bring even greater glory to our
Church community!
Please prayerfully consider what you will do for our
Parish this year, and God bless you.
