2011-2012 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

DIVISION OF STUDENT LIFE

Many exciting developments occurred in the Division of Student Life during 2011-2012 with the establishment of the JSU Veterans Center, the Commuter Connection Program, and the JSU Tiger Zone.

In an effort to increase the usage of the JSU Student Center, the frequency of films shown through Tiger Cinema increased to forty-three bookings for the entire year, which served approximately 6400 students.

DIVISION OF STUDENT LIFEOne major staffing change occurred with the appointment

of Mrs. Monica Walls-Jones as the Assistant Director of ADA (Americans with Disabilities) Services with the Latasha Norman Center for Counseling and Disability Services in Spring 2012.

Dr. Marcus A. Chanay was appointed to the National Association for Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) board to be in charge of conference development in July 2011. He also was re-appointed as Chair of the Chief Student Affairs Officers Board for the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL).

Additionally, in November 2011, Ms. Jeannese Alexander was elected State Editor for the Mississippi Association for Housing Officers (MAHO). She was also appointed as State Representative of MAHO in May 2012.

CAREER SERVICES CENTER• Corporate Partners Program

The Career Services Center continued its Corporate Partners Program and increased sponsorship from 6 to 9. These funds aided in the support of programs for students. 2011-2012 Corporate Partners were: State Farm, BankPlus, Walgreens, Enterprise Holdings, Union Pacific, Mississippi Power, MasterCard, Sanderson Farms and Catholic Charities.

• Federal Employers Panel DiscussionThe Career Services Center hosted its first Federal Employers Panel Discussion in February 2012. The Federal Employers Panel Discussion included representatives from the Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Labor, US Army Corp of Engineers, US Department of Probationary Services and the Bureau of Land Management. These agencies presented information to over 150 students about job opportunities with the federal government and provided suggestions on how to be successful in the application process.

CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP & INVOLVEMENT

• The Center for Student Leadership & Involvement hosted its Annual Emerging Leaders Leadership Summit in April 2012.

• The conference was attended by student leaders from Jackson State University, Tougaloo College, Alcorn State University, MS Valley State University, and Mississippi College. There was a 160.9% increase in attendance in 2012 (227) from 2011 (87).

• The Annual Clubs and Organizations Fair also saw record breaking numbers with over 700 students in attendance. Feedback from various clubs and organizations suggests that new membership increased by 30% following the Fair.

CENTER FOR SERVICE & COMMUNITY ENGAGED LEARNING (CSCEL)

CSCEL participated in its first international Alternative Break in fall 2011.

A total of thirty-three (33) Jackson State University students, faculty and staff members traveled to Shanghai, China, to render community service, which was coordinated by the Center for Service and Community Engaged Learning (CSCEL).

HOUSING/RESIDENCE LIFE

• Housing/Residence Life is currently participating in a study, Substance Abuse and Mental Health, from which a training program will be developed to train resident assistants.

• Only seven schools were selected to participate in the study and Jackson State University is the only HBCU to participate.

JSU VETERANS CENTER• Participated in two Yellow Ribbon

Military Recruitment Events. These events allow local schools to recruit veterans who are looking for a higher education. Both ceremonies were held at the Jackson Convention Center and The Hilton Garden Inn/King Edward. A total of 8 Veterans from both programs were recruited.

• Met with representatives from the Regional VA office and five different military reserve units to strengthen our partnership with the community.

• Met with at least one faculty/staff Veteran in each department at JSU to ensure that all veterans have a secondary advisor who is a veteran.

JUDICIAL SERVICES

• Judicial Services, along with the Student Justices, held a Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Forum in September 2011, for the freshmen students residing in the residence halls. This forum provided information on preventing and reporting sexual assaults and domestic violence on and off campus.

• The forum was mandatory, resulting in 98% of the freshman class in attendance. There were no incidents of domestic violence or allegations of sexual assaults reported from the Class of 2015 for the 2011-2012 academic year.

LATASHA NORMAN CENTER FOR COUNSELING & DISABILITY SERVICES

• During the 2011 – 2012, More than 2,954 students, faculty and staff attended workshops, were provided consultations, and participated in outreach presentations; more than 381 students received individual and group counseling with more than 605 individual sessions conducted. Staff development and training activities totaled 51.

STUDENT HEALTH CENTER

• The Student Health Center received a grant through the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) to provide free Rapid HIV Testing, Syphilis and education for students, staff and faculty within the clinic. Through this grant, the Health Center can receive a maximum amount of $28,800 annually. ($10 per test X 120 test conducted per month). This grant will continue for an additional 4 years.

• The Health Center has been very successful with the HIV HBCU Initiative grant awarded through Advocates For Youth. Jackson State University was recognized as the only university among the 5 HBCU grantees for having existing written policies regarding HIV/AIDS on the campus.

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS

• The Blue and White Flash Editor Brooke Kelly was selected as a national Chips Quinn Scholar; she interned in Washington, D.C. during the spring 2012 semester.

• The Blue and White Flash and staff received the following awards from the Mississippi Press Association:- 1st Place Awards– Brooke Kelly for Best Editorials and Kira Cummings for Best Editorial Cartoons.- 2nd Place General News Story – Brooke Kelly & Tiffany Edmondson; 2nd Place Sports Story – Brooke Kelly; 2nd Place General News Photo – George Tan; 2nd Place Sports Photo – Aden Brown- 3rd Place Design – The Blue & White Flash; - 3rd Place General Excellence – The Blue & White Flash

UPWARD BOUND

• 100% of the 26 Upward Bound students have been accepted into various colleges across the United States.

• The Upward Bound program was awarded a $1.25 million grant to be issued in $250,000 increments over a five-year period.

WALTER PAYTON RECREATION & WELLNESS CENTER

• The Department of Recreation Services has offered the Camp Tiger Tails program for the past four years which was held from May 29-June 29, 2012. The program had 125 attendees which is a 56.3% increase in participants.

• Had a successful turnout for the ‘Sweetness’ 5K Run/Walk/Ride and 1 Mile Fun Run "Fight Against Obesity“ that was held in conjunction with a Health Symposium that had over 1,500 people in attendance. A total of 574 individuals participated in the Run/Walk/Ride event which was a 32.6% increase from 2011.

Tiffany Edmondson Tiffany Edmondson, a senior Mass Communications major with an emphasis in Broadcast Production and a minor in Political Science, spent the spring 2012 semester as an intern with the White House Correspondence Associates Program in the Office of Presidential Correspondence.

Mea E. Ashley, Class of 2012 Mea E. Ashley, a native of Jackson, MS, graduated Cum Laude, spring 2012, with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications. While at Jackson State, Mea served as Miss JSU 2011 – 2012, and a member of the Prancing J-Settes, 2008-2011. She will be pursuing a Master’s degree in Journalism at Columbia University in New York City, NY, in fall 2012.

DeAndre Gates, Class of 2012 DeAndre Gates, a native of St. Louis, MO, graduated spring 2012, with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics. While at Jackson State, DeAndre served as Mr. Senior and founder of The Gentleman’s Academy. Currently, he is employed at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in Baltimore, Maryland. He was also accepted into the University of Baltimore in the Master of Public Administration program.

Britney Johnson, Class of 2012 Britney Johnson, a native of Pine Bluff, AR, graduated Summa Cum Laude, spring 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. During her time at JSU, Britney served as a student leader in many capacities including Senior Class President during the 2011-2012 academic year. In fall 2012, she will be entering Washington University’s Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences to obtain her Ph.D. in Biochemistry.

DIVISION OF STUDENT LIFE -STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Krystle L. Woods, Class of 2011 Krystle L. Woods, a native of Vallejo, CA, graduated summer 2011 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management. Currently, she is employed at Union Pacific in Omaha, NE. She is also enrolled in the JSU MBA Online program with degree conferral scheduled for August 4, 2012.

DIVISION OF STUDENT LIFE-FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

The Upward Bound Program was awarded $250,000 beginning June 2012, for a total of $1.25 million over a five-year period. The mission of the program is to provide low income and/or first generation high school students with academic support to prepare them to apply, matriculate, and graduate from post-secondary institutions.

TRIO Programs @ JSU, McNair Scholars Program and Upward Bound Program, awards annually total $469,000. Dr. Loria Brown Gordon is the principal investigator/ author of both grants. During the 2011-12 academic year, applications were submitted for refunding of both grants. It is anticipated that the award notification for the McNair Scholars Program will be sent in late summer 2012. Plans are under way to submit applications for two additional TRIO Programs: Upward Bound Math and Science and Upward Bound Veterans.

The Student Health Center was awarded a mini-grant by the Mississippi State Department of Health, Rapid HIV Testing – Syphilis Elimination for up to $28,800 annually. The grant will allow the Student Health Center to provide rapid HIV and syphilis testing during routine health care. This grant will last five years for a total of $144,000.

The newly founded JSU Veterans Center was awarded a grant by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) in the amount of $18,600.00 to be awarded in three installments. This grant will go toward veterans returning to the University.
