A Charter is issued to each newly-formed club by Lions International and traditionally clubs celebrate the anniversary of their formation with a
Charter dinner, to which other Lions Clubs, dignitaries and guests from other organisations are invited. Ashby and Coalville Lions celebrated in
traditional style with a formal dinner at the Lyric Rooms on 8th June, commemorating the end of one Presidential year and the start of the next.
In attendance were Councillor John Bridges, Chairman of NWLDC and his wife Annette, Lions District Governor Steve Scall, members of Lions
Clubs from Swadlincote, Oadby and Wigston, Barton under Needwood, Edwinstowe and the Dukeries and Loughborough as well as
representatives from the Ashby Rotary Clubs, Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal, the ‘Buffaloes’, and Ashby Probus Club.
Outgoing President Lynda Allen thanked members for their support during a very
busy and successful year, and presented a cheque for £250 to District Governor
Steve for his daughter’s chosen charity ‘R.E.A.C.H’ (Rehabilitation Education and
Community Homes). Steve thanked the club for the many and varied ways it has
been able to help the local community over the last 12 months, awarding them
two Service Challenge awards. He pointed out that it has taken 101 years for
Lions International to appoint a female International President and that there are
now over 50% of clubs in the UK with a female President. He made awards to
two members for 30 years’ service and a further 35 year award to Honorary Lion
Anthony Harris who donates the use of the fair to the Lions club every year during
Statutes, so that they can entertain hundreds of children and young people with
special needs. Plans are under way to run this event again in September, with
invitations going out to schools and organisations over a wide area, and replies
already coming in. If you have a school or organisation which would benefit from
this event but which has not yet been invited, please do get in touch for details •

Preparations are well underway for 2019 Bosworth Medieval Festival – which this year promises to bebigger and better than ever before.
There are loads of new attractions to keep the whole family entertained at the Festival, which
this year takes place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August. New entertainments for this year
include period falconry displays – both flying and static - medieval cooking demonstrations and
food tasting, a roving Jester, the King’s Executioner and a medieval puppet show. There will
be events taking place in the two arenas for most of the weekend and a new, mounted skill at
arms display which puts the horses and armoured riders through their paces.
As well as two battle re-enactments on each day
– including a 20-minure re-creation of the Battle
of Bosworth on both afternoons featuring
hundreds of re-enactors - there are large living
history encampments to explore, jousting, archery, cannon fire demonstrations, guided tours,
author talks, a medieval craft market and loads of exciting fun, hands-on games and competitions
for children, as well as entry to the award-winning exhibition and free car parking. There will be
a range of food stalls offering something to suit every taste and appetite, and the 1485 Tithe Barn
restaurant will also be open for lunches, teas and light refreshments throughout the weekend.
Tickets have been held at the same price as last year and represent even better value for money, as they are valid for the whole weekend.
This means that visitors can attend the Bosworth Medieval Festival on either or both days for no extra cost. And with the event running from
10am to 5.30pm on both days, that’s a possible 15 hours of entertainment for the entry price! Once through the gates, all events during the
two days (except talks in the Heritage Room and have-a-go archery) are completely free of charge. Tickets can be booked online at
www.bosworthbattlefield.org.uk or by calling 01455 290429 between 10am and 5pm. They can also be bought in person from Bosworth
Battlefield – and there are no booking fees. Family tickets and special group rates are also available. Tickets will also be available on the gate
on both days of the Festival.
BosworthMedievalFestivalwill be even bigger and better this year!

Stairlift superheroes step into action!Candor Care are continuing to give back to the local community by offering a donation of a reconditionedstairlift every month to someone to help improve their mobility.
The Coalville-based stairlift company launched their refurbished stairlift
donation scheme in January this year to help people in times of desperate
need. Having a stairlift installed can provide a comfortable solution on a short
or long term basis and give someone the freedom and independence back in
their home. Although not a huge expense, a stairlift is still a cost which some
people may struggle to afford. After donating 2 stairlifts in 2018 as part of a
competition during the popular Heather Scarecrow Festival, Candor decided
to donate a stairlift every month throughout 2019 to someone that will really
benefit.
Candor Care will be donating a fully refurbished stairlift to someone in need
every month throughout 2019. To register your interest for a friend or family
member that might be in need, email – [email protected] or send
a message through Candor Care’s facebook page.
Terms and conditions apply and all applications are given careful consideration
before response. Candor Care can only offer this for straight staircases with no
twists or turns.

Hermitage FM is the Community Radio
Station and Coffee Lounge in Memorial
Square, Coalville; a town whose centre has
been recognised by the Police and Crime
Commissioner as an area vulnerable to
crime and has been declared a ‘People
Zone’.
The North West Leicestershire Community
Safety Partnership has noted that the changing
face of crime presents fresh challenges, including
new drug-related crimes (e.g. ‘cuckooing) adult
and child sexual exploitation, domestic abuse
and ideologically driven domestic terrorism.
People vulnerable to abuse in their own home
can find it difficult to contact services. They
may not know which agency to ring or which
number to contact. They may not have access
to a working phone or may worry about not
having enough credit. Using their own phone, if
they have one, can bring a fear being found out
and punished by their abuser.
The red telephone box that used to be located
on many street corners has for some years been
in decline – after all we now have mobile phones.
Most towns now have a phone box which has
been preserved. However, Coalville seems to
have missed out up to now. Hermitage FM
(99.2) has just put that right and now has a fine
example of a K6 box, which is being restored
by station engineers and volunteers, in front of
their premises in Memorial Square. The work
will take several months and this symbol of
‘Britishness’ will stand on the edge of Coalville’s
conservation area.
Information displays about community
safety will be sourced from the North West
Leicestershire Community Safety Partnership
and the Police. Ongoing free telephone access
to the relevant organisations will be funded
recurrently by the station’s charitable arm,
Carillon Radio.
The project will enable people without safe
access to a phone the means to contact
agencies who can help them. The project will
give people who are at risk of abuse confidence
that they can call for help safely. It will give
a clear message to people living in Coalville’s
People Zone that the community cares about
their welfare.
The project has been supported by the Police
and Crime Commissioners Prevention Fund,
NWLDC and JB Tool Hire.

Saturday the 17th August will prove a red letter day for the people of North West Leicestershire when the Poppy Fields Music Festival takes place atthe Pretoria Road showground, Ibstock.
A feast of entertainment is on offer, with tribute artists from The Jam, George Michael and Frankie Valli, to name a few, but
headlining this year's event is non other than T-Rextasy, the world's only official tribute band to T-Rex. Poppy Fields is one of
only a few venues where you will see T-Rextasy live outdoors this year.
This is really building into one of the 'must see' events in the area with a range of wonderful music that will appeal to everyone
no matter what age. All proceeds will go to the Ibstock Ex-Forces fund and Royal British Legion. With the tickets on sale at
very attractive prices, it makes sense to book your place as soon as possible.
For more information on our cause and for ticket availability visit our website ww.poppyfieldsfestivalibstock.com.
Tickets are also available from Kats Antiques, Coalville and Ibstock Town Cricket Club, Ibstock.
So come on down! Let's have a great day out – see you there on the 17th!!

“This is the best Scarecrow Festival yet!”
The frequent feedback each year by
visitors of Heather Scarecrow Festival.
Last year the Festival celebrated its 20th
Anniversary in quite some style. The record
year raised £9,000 for local groups with a
bumper amount of visitors, including a few
well known characters from the Star Wars
Movies. The icing on the cake came with the
event being awarded ‘Highly Commended’
in the Best Outdoor Experience category
of the 2018 Leicestershire Tourism and
Hospitality Awards. Quite an achievement
for an event organised by community
volunteers!
So are the voluntary group of Scarecrow
Festival organisers resting on their laurels
this year, on the assumption they have
reached the pinnacle of their achievement?
Far from it, galvanised by last year’s amazing
success they have revamped their logo,
ordered more signs and plan to develop
some of the ideas introduced last year as
they as they forge ahead to the next decade
of Scarecrows.
As well as amazing scarecrows, you can
expect inflatable’s, stalls, refreshments, face
painting and more, depending on which
days you visit. The aim is to raise funds for
Village groups whilst providing an affordable
day out for visitors. So don’t expect an
environment where parents are constantly
under pressure to keep spending.
This year’s event will take place from 11am
on Sunday 28h July until 6pm on Sunday
4th August. As always, there will be ample
free parking and the popular Tea Room
at Heather St John’s Football Club (LE67
2QJ) with additional parking at Heather
Village Hall LE67 2RE. Once again local
groups and charities have been invited to
make use of the Village Hall to raise funds
for their organisation whilst also selling
Scarecrow guide and providing additional
toilet and refreshment facilities. Details of
the activities taking place at the Hall each
day will be shown in the Festival Guide and
announced on the Facebook Page. During
the final weekend there will be additional
stalls and face painting at the Football Club
and maybe a few extra surprises.
Ibstock Historical Society will be displaying
photographs showing some of Heather’s
past history. Forestry England has created
a centenary trail around Horseshoe Lake in
Sence Valley Forest Park, and plan to display
scarecrows. With so much going on, you
may prefer to visit Heather on more than
one occasion throughout Scarecrow week
and make the most of everything that is
going on at a more leisurely pace.

Frenchman’s Walk – to eternity? Most readers will be unaware of the route of ‘Frenchman’s Walk’ – the Napoleonic Prisoners, whounwillingly graced Ashby between 1804 and 1814, were allowed to go one mile, but no further, out oftown. Their favourite perambulation, apparently, was along Mount Walk, past the Castle, down UpperPackington Road to turn left (just beyond the present A42) and join the Leicester Road, before returningto their lodgings.
Often this was the route used by amorous officers and their local belles. The result was several
marriages, at least one elopement and more than one illegitimate offspring. However, one
unfortunate Frenchman never made it back from his outing. Captain Fort Deneges, who had
been captured in San Domingo in the West Indies, had arrived with a large contingent of officers
from Portsmouth on 4th November 1804. Four years later, on 6th December 1808, he was
found, lying in a field near Packington – his body still warm. Unfortunately, he was dead. His
coat was covering his body; his waistcoat, with a pocket handkerchief, were found a few yards
away. No other person was observed near the place. A sword had entered his breast on the
right side, between the 4th and 5th ribs, passed through the lungs and pierced the heart; the
left hand was also slightly wounded between the 2nd and 3rd fingers. Deneges had, apparently,
been waiting in his favourite hostelry in Ashby the previous afternoon for a letter to be delivered
to him. About 4 o’clock, finding no letter, he had left his lodgings in some haste.
An inquest was held at Packington and the jury returned a verdict of Wilful Murder “against some person or persons unknown”. An entry in
the burial register of Packington Church records “Mons Fort Denegers [sic], a French prisoner from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, buried December
9th, 1808 by me, R.T. Andrews, Curate.” Another duel ended the life of a Captain Colvin – he, too, was buried in Packington churchyard. The
man who had slain him was one of the chief mourners.
Perhaps the most unusual duel was fought between two French officers at Leek in November 1812. The Derby Mercury reported: “They had
but one pistol and, in consequence, after tossing up for the fire, one of them stood, at ten yards distance, and the other fired and shot him through
both thighs. He fell, and gave up his right to fire in return; the seconds insisted on his taking it, and held him up for the purpose – he then fired, and
shot his antagonist through the neck, and he died soon after. The survivor is recovering.”Kenneth Hillier (Ashby Museum)

The Inner Wheel Club of Ashby de la ZouchWomen who give service whilst enjoying friendshipWhat is Inner Wheel? Inner Wheel is one of the largest women’s service organisations in the world. It has 17,000 members within Great Britain
and Ireland and over 100,000 members from more than 103 countries across the globe.
The Inner Wheel Club of Ashby de la Zouch has been busy raising funds, collecting items such as stamps, buttons, old watches etc, and crisp packets
– the crisp packets are collected to raise funds for the charity GAIN. (Guillain-Barré syndrome)
10th January, Inner Wheel Day was celebrated in connection with Period Poverty; a
selection of sanitary products was donated to the Ashby Food Bank. Club member Melanie
took the donations to the Food Bank and was thanked by the duty manager.
Frugal Meal, instead of our usual meal at the La Zouch we meet at a member’s house, have
a very light meal such as soup, and the money we would have paid for our meal is donated
to our President’s charity. This combines service and friendship; our main ethos of Inner
Wheel. Also, it’s a social evening for members to get together and catch up on what fellow
members have been doing. The Group who organized the evening. Fran, Ann, Angela and
Eileen, did a great job of cooking and serving our frugal meal and many thanks to member
Ann for letting us invade her lovely home for the evening. The purpose of the evening is to
raise money for our President’s charity Rainbows Hospice and to fill handbags for Refuge
Relief, 61 bags were filled with toiletries, scarves, gloves, make up, note pads and jewellery.
President Janet was seen driving off with her car looking very weighted down.
13 members of the Club went to Cardiff for the Annual Inner Wheel Conference of GB&I. Excellent speakers and entertainment with lots of fun and
laughter. We will be at Netherseal Fete selling ice creams on behalf of Rotary and will have a stall to raise funds at the Tractor Rally in July. The
members of the Ashby de la Zouch Club now meet at the La Zouch, Kilwardby Street Ashby on the Second Thursday of the month for a meal,
followed by our meeting and often with a speaker. Recently we have supported the Ashby Food Bank, Canine Partners, Dementia Friends, Beat,
Steps, Homestart and many more. We as a club always like to have fun with our events.
In 2017 the Inner Wheel Club of Ashby de la Zouch celebrated 50 years as a club.
If you would like to join us at La Zouch one evening or would like more information please contact: Patricia on 01530 415041 or
[email protected] or if you would like to join a club nearer to you, we can put you in contact with them. Check out the Inner Wheel
website. www.innerwheel.co.uk We are in District 7. www.innerwheeldistrict7.org
We look forward to meeting you
Sue Stanyard visits Hope HouseEveryone at Hope House at Griffydam has an interesting dayon Mondays, with visitors in the morning and afternoon.
The morning visitor was Sue Stanyard of Lakeside Wills and Financial Services. Sue
has visited Hope House on a number of occasions and has offered extremely
valuable advice on wills, power of attorney and protective property trusts. This visit
was to pass over a very generous donation from Sue of £400. Sue can be seen in
the photo shaking hands with Carol Hill, the Care Services Manager at Hope House.
Hope House is the latest service to be opened by registered charity Hospice Hope
and is a place specifically for people with life limiting illnesses.
It differs from our three Support Cafés in that attendance is only for those with a
life limiting illness and by referral. People also stay for the duration of the day, rather
than attending on a drop-in basis. People can refer themselves to us (self-referral)
or referrals can be made by health and social care professionals, a carer or family
member.
Thank you, Sue, we appreciate greatly all of your
contribution to Hospice Hope.

TOWN HALL MARKET

ASHBY-DE-LA- ZOUCH

New government research on life satisfaction reveals that Britain'sbustling market towns are hailed as the places containing the secretsof happiness. The community spirit, thriving high streets and socialnetworks all contribute to this sense of well-being, so it follows logicallythat a thriving market hall must be at the heart of these findings.
Ashby's covered town centre market, housed within the old Town Hall building on Market Street,
is a piece of local history waiting to be discovered. A real treat, with a wealth of colourful stalls
offering a wide range of goods and services. A warm welcome and a relaxed atmosphere make
it the perfect place to browse, shop or pop in for refreshment.
The stalls vary from well-established to fresh, new-start independent retailers, providing shoppers
with a range of quality, choice and value in a charming Victorian setting. Goods available are as
diverse as good quality fishing tackle from 'Tackle Ashby' (who also buy and exchange equipment)
to Vape2Vape, catering for all of your vaping needs.
Opening times may vary between stalls, although full access is available between 9am and 4pm
from Monday to Saturday.
