Day 1: Friday

This course is about a topic and subject is people wanting to improve their prayer and their salah. It doesn’t get simpler than that. Salah we all pray and we all want it to be better than it already is, the basic way to achieve that is to understand it in prayer.

This is an effective and efficient method in achieving kushoo in the salah.

What we do in the seminar we start from the beginning and then discuss lingutstic defininton of salah and then we talk about words like kushoo, what does it mean? From a technical viewpoint, what does it mean. What is the importance of salah in islam, what is the importance of praying it with kushoo.

We also will cover things such as qunoot, many people don’t know what it means! These are very powerful and beautiful supplications. If you knew what they meant it would take you 15 minutes just to proerply say it. We even study istekharah. One of the most practical forms of salah is istekhara. You can use it immediately.

It’s a lot of information to try to squeeze into one weekend but since we have done it 13 times that we can do it inshAllah. Friday night is a little different, we reach into the middle of the salah and we learn about something that can be called the ESSENCE of the salah, the CORE of the salah, we pluck that out from the middle of sallah and we study that here on Friday. And that is SURAH FATIAH.

We will study it specifally in the contect of slaah and we will study it using hadith qudsi. We don’t assume any knowledge coming into class. Hadith qudsi means it’s a tradition passed on to us from the prophet said, and qudsi is what Allah has said.

We will study surah Faitha tonight, for a lot of reasons. The purpose of tonight is to get a feel for the courseAnother reason is it’s the right way to get off on the right foot.

A Principle in Arabic Whole vs PortionWe want to first set a couple of ground rules and principles. These are principles of eloquence, they apply to other languages as well.

1) First principle in Arabic language is “referring to the whole by mentioning a portion.” An example of this is the Ipad which was released a couple of weeks ago. Somebody comes up to you and says “Steve jobs just released the Ipad.” Was it really Steve Jobs who released the Ipad?

3

Page 4: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

No, Its APPLE that released it, the person is talking about Apple. Just by mentioning the Ceo (a portion of it) he is referring to whole thing because he is referring to the most important part of Apple which is the CEO.

2) Referring to a portion by mentioning the whole “Who are you having dinner with today?” I am having dinner with Nihal. But he say I say “I am having dinner with Darul Islah” In reality, you aren’t having dinner with the entire darul islah but since I only know Nihal, he represents Darul Islah, so only a portion represents the whole. Another example is when your engine gets busted what do you tell people? My “car is broken”. Did the entire car break? NO, the engine died, but you are referring to a portion of the car but that is the MOST IMPORTANT portion of the car! Everything else is fine, the wheels are fine, the body is fine, the inside of the car is fine but when the engine is dead there is no use for everything else therefore the when a portion of it (engine) does not work, the whole thing (car) is broken.

HADITH QUDSIQASAMTU: means to divide somethingSALAH TA BAYNI: between me NISFAYN: double form of the word NISF (meaning half) especially when you use it in conjunction. It becomes a fraction. It means exactly half. The word NISF means half but ESPECIALLY when you use it in the context of dividing something. NISFAYN means TWO EQUAL halves.

Allah says I have divided the prayer into TWO EQUAL HALVES.

WALI ABDI MA SA AL: For my slave is that which he has asked for, meaning my slave will get what ever he has asked for. What is he asking for? – It will make sense at the end of Surah Fatiha

The Quran and Sunnah literature speaks to people according to the NATURE of people how people process information. It’s in the human element, it is more effective when you build something up and then give it versus just giving it.

Look at the entertainment industry. They study humans and craft their entertainment in such a way that is effective. They know who to get our attention and keep it. If you look at movie trailers it develops ANTICIPATION, the cliffhanger, the teaser, it is how we work and how we process information. Similarly Quran also plays on our human nature. It says “something important is coming” which makes us think “what is coming?”

Example ayah in Quran “Do you know what this major event will be?”“How can You understand this major event!”…

Allah is addressing us, HE KNOWS how we process the information.

So Allah says, “I have divided the prayer into 2 equal halves” it makes you think “What half is Allah talking about? What will I receive?”

SO WHEN THE SLAVE SAYS ALHUMDU LILLAHI RABIL A LAMEEN What does this mean?

THE WORD ALHUMDU4

Page 5: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

ALHUMDU: this comes from the word HAMD which means PRAISE. It refers to a SPECIFIC type of praise. There are two words for praising someone or something- HAMD and MADH- They both have same letters shuffled around and this is no coincidence,

HAMD: Praising someone or something that is DESERVING OF THAT PRAISE. The praise is appropriate. What ever you are praising is deserving of that praise. It is its RIGHT to get praised.MADH: You praise someone of something that is not deserving, you may be falsely praising them. For example, some poets would just keep praising kings mindlessly. Or you praise someone for something they didn’t do (for example you praise someone for being tall-they didn’t do anything to make themselves tall! They shouldn’t be praised for it)

ALHUMDU just doesn’t mean praise, it means PRAISE THAT ALLAH IS DESERVING OF!*

Nouns VS. VerbsNouns and Verbs in the Arabic language. The thing about Arabic, it has rich and powerful rhetorical functions. Everything has EFFECTS of words. There are special features to using different types of wordsPast tense, present tense, future tense ALL have far reaching implications!

When you use the past tense, it has MORE EMPHASIS, more conformity.Future tense implies it will reappear over and over again.

Nouns- Are TIMELESS WORDS in ArabicVerbs- are limited by time.

If I say Zaid ran (when did he do it? He did it in the PAST) it’s limiting his running to the pastZaid is running- this is present, did he run in past? We don’t know. Will he do it in future? We don’t know.

If you said ZAID IS A RUNNER, this can apply to past, present, and future!Verbs are limited by time- nouns are not. Nouns are TIMELESS

Verbs also have another limitation. If I say “RAN”, what’s your next logical question? WHO RAN?If I said SAT, you would ask WHO SAT?Verbs require a DOER, they need someone to execute the action, to fulfill the action. A verb can’t speak on its own! You have to say she ran, he ran, I have to tell you who did the action. But NOUNS DON’T REQUIRE A DOER!

Nouns are stronger than verbs in the Arabic language. They are better at conveying ideas. Nouns pack a bigger punch. Nouns are unrestricted and is a powerful method of conveying thoughts or ideas.

ALHUMDU: Praise someone is deserving ofIt’s a noun so not limited by time or doer so TIMELESS PRAISE!There not even a DOER! It doesn’t say I PRAISE, Allah IS, WAS, and WILL CONTINUE to be worthy of praise whether someone is doing the act of praising or not!

5

Page 6: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

We can have definitions and translations but we need to actually understand the grammatical implications of each word. It doesn’t just mean All praise is to Allah! Its means so much more. ALHUMDULLILAH means at ALL TIMES ALLAH IS DESERVING OF PRAISE, WHETHER SOMEONE IS DOING IT OR NOT!

Maghrib Break

Allah says he has divided salah into 2 equal halvesThen Allah says “this is between me and my slave and my slave will be given what ever he asks for”

Then when a person stands up for prayer and says ALHUMDULLILAHI RABILALAMEENWe covered Alhamdulillah

Whether someone is praising Allah or not praising Allah, ALLAH STILL DESERVES ALL PRAISE. Timeless praise is EXCLUSIVELY for Allah.

What is the etymology of word? (it means the ORIGIN of the word, the ROOT of word, where it come from, what did it initially mean, how did it come to the meaning where it is now)

SARF- has etymology and morphologyModern day Arabic only covers MORPHOLOGY (how a word changes, say when with 2 women or 2 men) Etymology is ALSO the root, origin, and how it got to where it is now.

Morphology is a TECHNICAL science, you memorize charts and tablesWe will focus on Etymology.

THE WORD RABIn the Arabic language the word Rab means MASTER (even Lord suffices). The thing about the word Rab is you understand the meaning of the word by looking at the opposite. This is very true for classical Arabic. Like we say someone is decisive, someone who is not decisive is Indecisive. In Arabic we don’t do this.

ABD is slave, the opposite of slave is NOT “ghayr abd”

What is the opposite of ABD (slave)? The opposite of slave is RAB (Master).

The introduction of Allah in the Quran says RABB, the very FIRST attribute that Allah assigns to himself in the Quran is RABB. When Allah introduced himself to the Ambiya, the prophets, and the messengers, Allah introduced himself as RAB! (IQRA BISMIRABIKALADHI KHALAQ)

Or

YA MUSA IN ANNA RABUKA…

6

Page 7: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

RAB is such a comprehensive word that integrates and incorporates MANY OTHER ATTIRBUTES of ALLAH, This is a VERY LAYERED word.

Rab implies SOMEONE WHO HAS OWNERSHIP (MAALIK- SOMOENE WHO FEEDS OR STUSTAINS (RAAZIQ)SOMEONE WHO MAINTAINS (QAYIM)SOMEOE WHO PROTECTS (HAFEEDTH)SOMEONE WHO GUIDES (HAADI)

All of these meanings are built into the word RABB which is why a lot of times this is first used to describe Allah

ALLHUMDULILLAH I RABIL AALAMEEN

THE WORD AALAMEENAL AALAAMEEN (THIS is plural word which comes from AALAM This word AALAM actually doesn’t just refer to world, but A REALM (a place and time where things exists)Lord of the words is INCORRECT

ALAAMEEN is what we call people plural (talking only about people living beings)The plural that would mean worlds is AWAALIM but Allah doesn’t say this, Allah say ALAMEENWhat it really means is ALLAH LORD AND MASTER OF ALL THE NATIONS. Because it refers to a time and place where people live. Can you imagine someone 1400 years ago coming right now and seeing us sitting in this room? The laptop would freak him out, the lighting would confuse him, the cars, the phones all will seem so different to him. So it’s a DIFFERENT realm of existence for that person! It’s the same dunya, same world, but if a person was to walk into this area, they would feel like they are in a DIFFERENT WORLD! So that’s what ALA MEEN refers to. Different places and times people have livesEven the realm of the jinns is an example of another realm that is just one of the many realms Allah is Lord and Master of.

When a person says ALHUMDULILLAHIRABILALAMEEN….ALLAH RESPONDS!

This is a HUMBLING MOMENT! THINK ABOUT IT, ALLAH RESPONDS TO YOU! HE IS SPEAKING TO YOUHE IS HAVING A DIALGUE WITH YOU!HE IS ADDRESSING YOU PERSONALLY!ALLAH WAS LISTENING TO YOU WHEN YOU SAID ALHUDULILLAHIRABILALAMEENHE NOW RESPONDS BACKHE IS SPEAKING TO YOUIT IS AMAIZNG WHEN YOU THINK ABOIUT ITWHEN YOU STAND FOR SALAH AND LET IT SINK IN

There is nothing like Allah, can’t compare. But think about it, say you are sitting with someone important to you, president or ceo, or someone who stands at the top. If you are sitting with that person and you are talking that person. This person in his busy and hard to get schedule, has given you his time , his attention. Say the president sits with you one on one and is talking to you, would you start looking off to the other direction? “Sorry I didn’t hear you- what where you saying again?”

7

Page 8: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

NOYou would be attentive, focused, looking at him, this is the greatest experience in your life, it doesn’t get better! Everyone in the world wants to be in your shoe. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ANOTHER HUMAN BEING…someone not even that good!

BUT ALLAH, the CREATOR OF EVERYTHING in the entire Universe! THE SUSTAINER THE PROVIDER OF EVERYTHING, HEEEEE IS SPEAKING TO US! But no, for some reason while you are in salah all of a sudden the hole in the wall intrigues you! That hole would have been so insignificant any other time in your life but only in salah does it become to interesting- so unfortunate! So Allah responds!!

ALLAH RESPONDSHA MA Dee ABDI (HE HAS PRASIED ME )

This is Allah ACKNOWLEDGING us, this is Allah accepting our praise, our offering, our words. Despite our flaws, our issues, our inattentiveness, Allah is ACCEPTING our praise.

THE WORDS ARAHMAAN ARAHEEMWA IDHA QAAL, (THE SLAVE SAYS)“ARAHMAAN ARAHEEM”He then presents 2 attributes of Allah,They both come from root word of MERCYWhat do these words means?

RahmaanThe major difference of opinion comes between the scholars of tafseer (engaging in linguistic analysis more so then others) and the scholars of Arabic grammar (who focus on studying the language)

1.) FIRST OPINON is it is indicating ABUNDANCE, Both talk about someone having A LOT OF MERCY but RAHMAAN is more than Raheem

2.) SECOND OPINION (many scholars of tafseer agree) RAHMAAN is general mercy, openly, without bias. Allah has mercy on everyone and everything. This encompasses muslims and nonmuslims, humans and animals, its general mercy and then RAHEEM refers to one who is SPECIFICALLY merciful to the believers.

3.) THIRD OPINION is the opinion of the majority of scholars of language. This seems like the one that makes the most sense. RAHMAAN refers to one who has ABUDNACE of mercy

Notice the sound it creates (the MAAAN sounds)QurAAN also has this extended ending sound when its said. Quran comes from the root word “to recite”, When ever the “AAAAN” sound is added to word, it implies ABUNDANCEQuran means something that is just read, and QURAAAAN is something that is read a lotSo here RAHMAAAN- someone who is VERY VERY MERCIFUL, Abundance of his mercy knows absolutely NO BOUNDS!

8

Page 9: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

RaheemRAHEEM implies CONSTANCY- Someone who is CONSTANTLY MERCIFUL.(such as kareem , azeez, majeed, ghafoor, ) all imply constancy

RAHMAAN implies abundanceRAHEEM implies constancy

Allah responds to you again! The dialogue continues

STHANAA AND ITS MEANING TO FOLDASTHNAA ALAYA ABDEE (My slave has lauded me)Comes from root word STHANAA (its root means TO FOLD SOMETHING)There is a reason for this-when you fold something what do you basically do? You not only folded it up but you also DOUBLED the layer. It goes from a single layer and becomes double, when you fold again it becomes four layers, when you do it again, it becomes EIGHT! This is what THSANAA means

In Surah HUD “They used to fold their arms over their chests, they used to layer their chests “ when they past the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) reciting Quran, they tried to ARM PROOF VEST their hearts so Quran wouldn’t affect them.

STHANAA- means when you praise someone, not just once, you keep doing it AGAIN AND AGAIN you keep stacking on more. You keep folding the layer. Allah says “My slave keeps stacking praise upon praise upon praise on Me”

ALHUMDURAB RAHAMAN RAHEEM , (4 LAYERS!)

Then after a person says that, the NEXT ayah we recite is

THE WORD MAALIKIYAWMIDEEN

Maaliki YowmideenCONCEPT OF ACCOUNTABILITYMAALIK- this refers to someone who has OWNERSHIP of something. He OWNS it and has COMPLETE CONTROL AND AUTONOMY of it. He is the one with COMPLETE OWNERSHIP.

YAWM- means THE DAY OF. Some have translations of “the owner of the day of” this doesn’t give you the full understanding!Arabic grammar is CONCISE and brief but it is STRONG. Just the SEQUENCE of the words adds meaning.

There is no word for OF in Arabic. The Quran can ONLY be properly studied when we study and understand the Arabic and its intricacies.

9

Page 10: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

MAALIK- the one with complete ownershipYAWM ADEEN- We normally translate “the day of judgment”ADEEN does NOT mean judgment! (the word for judgment is HISAAB)ADEEN does NOT mean resurrection! (the word for resurrection is QIYAAMA)This word DEEN refers to RETRIBUTION. When you GET what you have coming to youHISAAB- is accounting/judgmentDEEN- is retribution; it’s a step above that!

He Is The MASTER OF and has COMPLETE OWNERSHIP of the day of retribution. There will come a day, without a doubt, that you will have to face the consequences of your actions!!!!

Surah Fatiha is very CONCISE. It captures the PRIMARY THEMES OF THE QURAN because it sets the tone for what is to come afterwards. We started off by the praise of Allah, we ACKNOWLEDGED that fact He created us, He feeds us, He maintains us, He protects us, He guides us…We said he is our RABB

RAHMAAN - we are invoking mercy from AllahBecause mercy is something we NEED.

That’s why Allah defines marriage as rahma, we NEED IT

NOW we acknowledge accountability The theme of accountabilityWe realize that “LOOK, it is not just this life we are concerned with, there WILL be that day of resurrection when we will all have to answer TO ALLAH and face the consequences of our deeds. This is a powerful concept of accountability we as Muslims must remember.*

ALLAH ONCE AGAIN REPSONDS TO USThe dialogue continuesAllah then responds

MAJDA DA NEE ABDI (MY SLAVE HAS GLORIFIED ME)

Comes from root word GLORYMeans MY SLAVE HAS GLROIFED ME (why glory? Because my slave is not just acknowledging his need for me in the life of this world but is ALSO attributing the fact that I will be the one solely in control of the day of judgment.

Another narrationFA WWADA – means TO SURRENDERYou are basically saying I AM AT YOUR MERCY O Allah, I am handing myself over to you“My slave has surrendered himself to me, he has completely surrendered himself to me”Why surrender? Because he is acknowledging the fact the HE WILL be accountable to me.

This is FIRST PORTION OF SURAH FATIHA

Then the salve saysIYAAKA NA BU DU WIYAAKANASTAEEN

10

Page 11: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

This just might be one of the most powerful ayah of the entire QuranThis one ayah captures the ESSENCE of our relation ship with AllahThis AYAHVery deepVery powerfulVery beautifully laid out

Na’buduNABUDU comes form the root word ibaadahIbaadah comes from the root word ABD- it means slaveHow does ibadah means worship? Rather IBAADAH means to ENSLAVE YOURSELF to somethingTo devote and dedicate something is ibaadah WORSHIP IS PART OF THAT

Worship is the PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION of that devotion, of that dedication

We can use the word worship here for now

But understand full context of the word

Iyaaka Na’buduNA’BUDU KA means WE WORSHIP YOU (you refers to Allah) which is the NORMAL ORDER (WE WORSHOP YOU, NA BU DU KA) this is the normal sentence order

MOVING AROUND ORDER OF THE SENTENCETHIS AYAH, THE KA IS MOVED FROM THE END TO THE BEGINIGNG OF THE WORD, BEFORE THE WORD!When ever you do that, taking the attached pronoun and being to the beginning of the word you need to add “IYA”

If refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOUBut in Arabic, it has a very specific purpose and powerful effect on a word!It adds flavor to the word, core of the meaning stays the same!It adds to the meaning a sense of EXCLUSIVITY

ONLY you do we worship- very powerfulMakes its very preciseThere is no room to interpretationBecause the mushirkoon arabs at the time of the Prophet pbuh acknowledged that Allah should be worshiped …but along with the idols

ONLY YOUUU do we worship and enslave ourselves to

Wa iyaaka NastaeenWA IYAAKA (and)And ONLY YOU NASTAEEN NASTAEEN comes from the root word AWN

11

Page 12: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

AWN VS NASRAwn doesn’t t mean help,

Help in arabic is NASRHELP implies you were NOT able to do it by yourself. Example could be like in an emergency

AWN means ASSISTANCE. Not like above. If there is water on the table, he is able to get it himself, But while he was getting water the brother gets up and “assists” him to get him water that is AWN.

AWN means to ASSIST, NASR (help) means doing something the person can’t do

NASTAEEN (only you we seek ASSISTANCE FROM!) Meaning we should not turn to Allah only in emergency situations, but turn to Allah for EVERYTHING!!!!Before you go to the bathroom, before you eat, before you sleep, before applying for a job, when getting married etc. EVERTYTHING you do you start by saying BISMILLAH

The word nastaeen makes us understand that we turn to Allah and seek his assistance not just when we are in emergency, but for all things. No matter how capable we are, no matter how confident we are, we seek assistance from Allah

Lets look at the STRUCTURE of the ayah. If someone was to say that you take away the repetition.IYAKA repeats itself. If someone was to say just use the first iyaaka, it would make sense. The repetition of the IYAKA is not really necessary but it IS DONE none the less

Why is the word nabudu mentioned before seeking assistance? Why worship first and then seek assistance. Because the BEST WAY TO SEEK ASSITANCE FROM ALLAH IS THROUGH WORSHIP

You presented worship now seek what you needAt the end of the prayer, supplications are acceptedWhen breaking your fast, supplications are accepted

REFERING TO ALLAH THIRD PERSONSo the sequence here is importantTHE BEST WAY TO SEEK ASSITANCE FROM ALLAH IS TO APPROACH HIM WITH WORSHIP

REPETITION separates the two statements. Allah separates them by the repetition of IYAKAASo that NO ONE will get the idea that you MUST worship Allah to get Allahs assistance because some people may have lost their way, they stop praying and dhikr, they find themselves in tough situation, where they want to ask Allah for help but they don’t think they are entitled to it- I haven’t been praying I cant ask.

So we if you look in the first three ayahs12

Page 13: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Alhudmullahrabialameen (All praise is for Allah) we are talking ABOUT Allah. When you say their name its 3rd person

Arahmaan nirahiim maaaliki yowmideenWe are praising Allah by TALKING ABOUT HIM. To show how low we are and how high Allah is, he is way beyond us.

But as SOON as we talk about worship and seeking assistance we talk TO Allah! In the beginning Allah is way beyond you, but as soon as you engage in worship and ibaadah, you become close to him!

USING PLURAL WE WORSHIP YOUOnly you do WE worshipThat is plural, All of usWhat if I praying salah by myself? Can I say “I” worship?- NORemember Fatiha is the ESSENCE, the CORE of the concepts in the QuranOne of THE most important concepts we have in the Quran is UNITYIts very important! Here, when we talk about worshiping Allah , its WE, not I to remind you of unityWhat is that unity connected to? WORSHIP, IBAADAH

The #1 Way to establish unity amongst us is by the means of our worship. We focus on EVERYTHING else except ibaadahLets have picnic, get together, diner etc, But NOTHING unifies us like salah! It removes all the barriersIt doesn’t matter color, culture, language, rich poor, nothing matters anymore young, old EVERYONE lines up. Everyone follows imam together, goes into sujood together

Unity is focused mainly on communityUnity is also WIHTIN the family! One very basic solution is performing salah together at home,. It sounds simple but it begins and starts here.

Our bonds with each other becomes weaker when our relationship with Allah becomes weakHE IS THE ONE that puts the companionship and unity within our hearts

RESTABLISH YOUR CONNECTION WITH ALLAH

iyakaAllah responds againHA THAA BAYNI ADBI-“THIS relationship, this bond, this connection, IS BETWEEN ME AND MY SLAVEThe means 2 things-When someone has a problem with someone and a third person steps in and its said to that person “don’t worry its just between him and me”, that mean I have things taken cared of, Allah is saying “this is between me and my slave, everything else is taken cared of”

13

Page 14: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

2nd implication2 people are having conversation, and 3rd person comes in and you say get out, this is between me and him. This shows PRIVACY, INTIMICY, this is an INTIMATE relationship, close, near, private, unique, individual relationship with Me and my slave.

WA LI ABDI MA SA AL- 2nd time we see this! Climax is building, it is coming, building suspense“And for my slave is what ever he has asked for” – still doesn’t explain what that means, it will come.

We JUST FINSIHED FIRST HALF (NASTAEEN)

FIRST HALF ESTABLISHED OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ALLAH, THE SECOND HALF IS SUPPLICATION

IHDINAA SIRAATAL MUSTAQEEM

Ihdinaa- GUIDE (show the way)Comes from the word HIDAYA- (origin means walk with someone along, show them the way)If you have seen a blind person, his walking stick is HAADIYA because it shows person the way)

IHDI- show me, guide me, show me the wayIHDI NAA (naa means US, guide us, show us the way)What do we want to be guided to? ASIRAAT-

SIRAAT VS SABEELIt means PATH (siraat) but it means a SPECIFIC type of path, there are other words for pathSABEEL (path) SIRAAT (path) The difference is siraat has NO PLURAL in the Arabic language! Sabeel has plural (subul) but siraat has no plural! When ever imaan is talked about in the Quran, faith and belief, Allah uses SIRAAT because there is ONLY ONE PATH OF GUIDANCE, ONLY ONE PATH OF IMAAN, singular, oneThe concept of unity is continuing. Everyone is one line, one path

Singular path of guidance, following way of prophet, and it unites usWhen Allah talked about spending in the way of way Allah, Allah used SABEEL! Fi sabee lilah! Because there are A LOT of ways to give in the way of Allah!!! Give to the masjid, humanitarian relief, Islamic school, etc so there are many many paths.

When guidance is used, its SIRAAT.

ALMUSTAQEEM-This comes from the root for the word TO STAND (qiyam)-Means to standMUSTAQEEM means (to make something stand, to make something upright) then it is STRAIGHT, that’s where the translation of straight comes from. The translation gets to the point.Make someone stand and upright and stand

14

Page 15: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Guide us to the straight path. It carries 2 implications- It’s the MOST APPROPRIATE WAY a person can walk through this life

If Allah was to say IHDINAS SIRAATAL MUSTAKEEM, it conveys a point-But that kind of leaves a question

People want to live upright lives, people want to be ethical and moral BUT what humanity struggles with is the issue of HOW DO YOU DEFINE THAT?WHAT IS THAT?Everyone tries to come up with their own idea, and their own definitionHumanity struggles with this

ALLAH PROVIDES US WITH AN ANSWER FOR THAT. When Allah give us hidayah, Allah lights the wayYou know EXACTYL where you are goingAllah defines that path, what is that path of guidance

Whats interesting is that Allah defines the path BY PEOPLE!

SIRATALADHEENA AN AMTA ALAYHIMAN AMTA comes from the root word for BLESSINGThe path of those people whom YOU HAVE BLESSED, whom you have sent your blessing upon

THOSE PEOPLE

GHAYRIL MAGHDOOBI ALAYHIM

NOT those people AL MAGHDOOB (its passive, means THEY HAVE INCURRED THE WRATH UPON THEMSELVES! They themselves, have brought upon the anger upon themselves!!

WALADHAALEEN

Not the path of those people who are wandering around lost, doesn’t know his or her way

Allah identifies path of guidance BY the people whom He has blessedGUIDANCE IS A BLESSING OF ALLAH NO ONE IS ENTITLED TO IT, NO ONE CAN CLAIM IT FOR THEMSELVES

We need to constantly be thankful to Allah for the great blessing we have!

WE WOULDNT BE ABLE TO GET HERE OURSELVESTHIS IS A BLESSING FROM ALLAH

We ATTTRIBUTE this blessing to Allah,YOU have given it to me Ya Allah

Allah then talks about EVIL, Evil is the ABCENCE OF GUIDACNE, darkness is the absence of light.15

Page 16: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

EVIL is manifested in 2 different ways

Either people become DISOBEDIENT, rebellious, “Im going to do what ever I feel like doing”

OR

It manifests itself in the form of APATHY, they just don’t care, lost, clueless, they don’t even know they don’t care!

WE SEEK PROTECTION FROM ALLAH

GHAYRIL (doesn’t say “people who you are angry upon” don’t attribute it to Allah-When we talk about anger, we don’t say Allah sent the anger, THEY brought it upon themselves!

Allah identifies what is guidance by pointing out the people before usWhen he tells us the opposite of that he ONCE AGAIN points out people

IMPORTANCE OF ROLE MODELSThe innate need of someone is to seek out role model IT’S A NEED people haveEveryone looks up to SOMEONEEveryone EMULATES SOMEONE!Whether athlete, parents, celebrity, or friend

EVERYONE EMULATES SOMEONE

The need for role models is for everyone!

THIS AYAH TEACHES US IF WE DON’T PROVIDE POSITIVE ROLE MODELS, then they will be replaced by peoples worse than them.

What is the level of awareness of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh in our communities? VERY LITTLEWe need to teach about the prophets, his family, his personality,We need to teach about the great scholors and sahabahWe as parents, as older brothers, we need to BECOME BETTER ROLE MODELS! we need to live up to the standard where they can lookup to usWe don’t do that SO ITS NO SURPRISE THE ROLE MODELS THE YOUTH FOLLOW today. They talk like them, they dress like them, they walk like them, Its something to think about and this surah teaches us that

WA LADHAALEEENAllah respondsHA DHA LI ABDI“THIS IS FOR MY SLAVE”

THIS IS THE Explanation for the teaser that was given twice, (my slave will get what he asks for)THIS is what he has been asking for

16

What is the GREATEST blessing from Allah? - GUIDANCE,That is why we pray for it, ask for it many times in every single salah

There is NO OTHER BLESSING BETTER, MORE SIGNIFICANT

Allah says THIS IS GIVEN TO HIM! What the slave had asked for

Take special note at the beginning of the hadith

THE UNDERLINED WORD IS SALAHThe beginning of the hadith, we started off by saying“I HAVE DIVIDED THE PRAYER”Then the hadith goes on, The hadith talks about what? Salah? – NO

Hadith talks about SURAH FATIHA, it didn’t talk about salah, it talked about fatihaThen why did Allah say I have dived the salah? When the hadith talks about fatiha?

ALLAH IS REFERRING TO A PORTION OF SOMETHING BY MENTIOING THE WHOLE!Fatiha is part of salah, salah is whole, and portion is surah fatiha! When I say my car is broken but the wheels are fine, the body is fine, the steering, the seats, everything is fine, only the engine is busted- I STILL say the “the CAR is broken”.

Allah says I have divided the salah (when He is really referring to Surah Fatiha)The engine is the ESSENCE of the car, there is no point to the car without the engine

The ESSENCE OF THE SALAH IS SURAH FATIHA, there is no point of salah without FATIHA!!!(hadith)

We also think its a FIQH issue (whether or not surah Faitha is needed for salah or notetc), but we missed the point! The prophet is saying FATIHA IS THE CORE OF SALAH, IT’S THE ESSENSE OF FATIHAfter studying the Fatiha we find how it’s the core

The word NISFAYN in the hadithWe said it means TWO EQUAL HALVESFrom the beginning of Surah Fatiha to the end of the first half (NASTEEN) there are 63 letters. The second half from ihdinaa to waladhaaleeen,- there are 63 letters.

When Allah says he has divided Fatiha into 2 equal halves look at how the words of Allah ARE SO PRECISE THERE ARE LITTERALLY TWO EQUAL HALVES! It’s the beauty and accuracy of Surah Fatiha.

When was the LAST TIME YOU EXPERIENCED SALAH, not prayed salah, or performed salah, WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU EXPERIENCED SALAH!!When was the last time you LOST YOURSELF IN SALAH!??Like kids playing video games, for HOURS they cant hear you or see you.

Football is 3 to 5 hours long! GONE LOST.17

When you talk on the cellphone look a time counter, JUST the phone conversation

When you sit down at night you know you should pray isha, I just need to check my email for 5 minutes which turns into hours. When was the last time you lost track of time in Salah?

When we go out to the mall or shopping we spend hours and hours there without even realizing it.When it comes to salah WE COUNT THE MINUTES AND SECONDS OF SALAH!Experience itFeel itGet lost in it!

THE FIRST LESSON IN ARABIC CLASSESThis was the FIRST LESSON IN ARABIC DAY 1The words ILMOON and AA MA LUN

They are the same 3 letters shifted aroundThese words are intimately related

ILMOON- means knowledgeAA MA LOON- means action, to implement that knowledgeThese little vowels, we call them HARKAAAT (fatha, kusra, damma)

Harakah means MOVEMENT, Because they move sounds

But middle guy on top of LAAM is SUKOON- its means ABSENCE OF MOVEMENT (opposite of movement)The teacher said

In the midle of knowlde, in the middle of the word is sukoon To seek knowdle ABSCENCE OF MOVEMENT IS NEEDEDYOU CANNOT GET KNOWLEDGE MOVING AROUND, YOU NEED TO TAKE TIME OUT, YOU NEED TO SIT DOWN AND LEARNONCE YOU HAVE ACQUIRED THAT KNOWLEDGE then comes the next step- AML

ALL THREE LETERS OF AML HAVE HARAKAAT. IMPLEMENT THAT KNOWLEDGE, USE THAT KNOWLEDGE, ALL THREE LETTERS HAVE HARAKAAT

THIS IS SALAH, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING AFTER IMAANTHE THING THAT CAN IMPROVE ALL AREAS OF YOUR LIFEIT’S A SPECIAL BLESSING TO HAVE THE OPPOTUNITY TO BETTER OUR SALAH

One weekend is worth the investment (this was free Friday so the teacher was encouraging us to take the entire course which was the entire weekend)

Pg 4HadithINSERT HADITH

AWALUU “ THE VERY FIRST THING that the slave will be ACCOUNTED for on the day of judgment is SALAH.” If the prayer was good, correct, established, was taken care of, ALL OF HIS ACTIONS will also be correct. (One thing is to understand is that salah is the foundation of our deen, the basis for our relationship with Allah, and also the foundation with OTHER aspects of lives, family, friends, etc. WHEN YOU HAVE A SOLID FOUNDATION, WHAT EVER YOU BUILD ON THAT IS SOLID. Foundation is IMPRTANT.The Prophet pbuh is saying if someones salah is solid, EVERYTHING else is solid. BUT IF HIS SALAH IS CURRUPTED then all other of his actions will be corrupted because they won’t be built upon salah!. The Prophet pbuh said the FIRST thing is salah.

NOW WE LOOK AT QuranBeginning of Surah Muminoon. INSERT QURANIC AYAHSurah 23 and Ayah 1 to 11Allah says “QAD AFLAHAMUMINOON- Most definitely success has been attained , achieved by the believersThen Allah tells us the qualifies of believersFIRST thing Allah says

1) THEY HAVE the QUALITY, KHUSHOO IN THEIR PRAYERS, they experience their salah2) THEN, they don’t waste their time, 3) They purify themselves4) They are MORAL and ETHICAL in their social behavior5) When they are given a trust they keep that trust, when they make a promise they keep their

word6) They are MINDFULL over the times of their prayers

THESE are the people, MOST DEFFFINITELY. THEY WILL INHERIT (what will they inherit?)…They will inherit JANATUL FIRDOUS!

WHY INHERET? Inheritance implies THIS IS YOUR RIGHTFOR THIS NOT TO BE GIVEN TO YOU IS A CRIME, TO DENY INHERITENCE IS A CRIMETO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM IS A CRIME!

AND THEY ARE IN IT FOR ALL OF ETERNITY

Look at this, EVERYTHING WENT GOOD FOR THESE PEOPLE, WHAT WAS THE FOUNDATION? SALAH that’s where it started…

In another passageINSERT QURANIC AYAHSURAH MADDASSIR29TH JUZThis is dialogue between people of jannah and the hell fire

“ Jannata Yatasaaa Aloon” (they are in the garden of paradise), Ya ta saa aloonThen a conversion starts amongst themselvesA Nil Mujrimeeen- (those criminals, what happened to those people? whats the story with those people?)

Now they ask those people in jahanam

Maa Sala A Fi Sakar- (You seem like intelligent people, you were there with me in the world, you seemed like normal people, you had a house, a nice car, a job, an education- WHAT HAPPENED? WHAT LED YOU DOWN TO THE LOWEST PITS IN THE FIRE OF HELL, WHAT LED YOU THERE?)

THEY WILL REPSOND Lam Naku Minal Musaleen“WE DIDN’T USED TO PRAY”…

Then they say

“We didn’t feed the poor, the needy”, we didn’t fulfill our social obligations, we weren’t active in the community”We used to indulge in useless things, we indulged in themWe wasted our time with them

This became so bad that we were in COMPLETE DENIAL that the day of retribution was comingWE WERE IN DENIAL

Hataa Ataanal Yakeen UNTILL THE REALITY CAME (death), CONVICTION ARRIVEDTHEN WE REALIZED WE WERE WRONG

Everything went bad for these people, WHERE DID IT ALL START? THEY DIDN’T PRAY, STARTED WITH SALAH

You are observing what the people said in the QuranYOU SEE THE FATE OF A PERSON RESULTED FROM THE SALAH

LESSON ON THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY IN PRAYERINSERT QURANIC AYAH22:772#:1-2

WHOOO?

Al MuimiNoonTHE FIRM BELEIVERS….

What is their characteristic? They also pray, BUT THEY PRAY WITH QUALITY IN THEIR PRAYER

LOOK at the difference!!!! If you just pray, maybe possibly you might get success. Are you satisfied with that? Anyone say “I don’t need a lot, If I get a corner in jannah, I’m good to go” this is incorrect. Do we settle for that in dunya? NOFather sits down with son, what do you want to be? And he says I want to be garbage manYou think he will be satisfied with that?Even if son says “I did research, pay is good, you get benefits as well as pension, etc

Father will say NO,

In dunya, when it comes to material things we want the BEST OF BEST but in deen and islam, we ”just want enough”.Allah teaches us in the Quran a beautiful dua-“ WAJANLAA LILTMUKEENA IMMAMA”

Make us not just pious, but the LEADERS of the pious

Allah says, just salah, - maybeBut khushoo , quality in salah CONFIRMED THAT PERSON IS ALREADY SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE HIS SALAH HAS QUALITY.

Day 2: SaturdayLets look at some definitionsWhen ever we discuss terms, there are LINGUSTICS and TECHNICAL (FIQH) definitionsWe will be more concerned with the linguistic definition of things

The word SALAH is the most basic word in this course. We know it refers to the prayer we offer 5 times a day

There are 4 possible options for the root meaning of the word salah, where the word originates form, (the etymology)

1) Salah in the linguistic roots means TO PRAY FOR MERCY. This is the opinion of the majority of the scholars. The word salah means to pray for mercy (A DUA ILAL RAHMA)

2) The second option is the majority of the LINGUSTIC scholars. That salah comes from the word SILAH- which means connection. We know salah is a connection between the slave and AllahThe hips of the body is called ASALAWAAN (it’s the connection between upper and lower part of the body) Athletes tell you the core of the body is the hips, mid section. Similarly in classical Arabic they would have saying “ASLATIL FALAS” when horses are racing each other, when one horse comes in first and another is close second, the head of the horse of the 2nd horse is aligned with the hips of the first horse so what they would say “THIS HORSE CAME IN A CLOSE SECOND”. This points to the congregational prayer. When we follow imam and do we go in sujood, we follow.

3) Third option is the root means to BURN SOMETHING. There is a figure of speech SALAYTUL OOD BIN NAAR” I burned the wood with fire. If you try to bend wood it breaks and snaps but the only way to bend and mold wood is to heat I up in a fire. When a person would humble themselves before someone else, “I humbled the wood with fire, I took something that could not be bent and I was able to bend it, I humbled it”

4) Minority opinion- it’s a foreign word that transcended into Arabic language and it means prayer. Many words in languages transcend into each other from another language. Example is jahanaam, its not an Arabic word per se, it is from another language. So the word SALAH was there before the language of Arabic. This shows the consistency of salah itself! So salah PRECEEEDS our ummah, not only that but THE SAME NAME, it was known by that name by the ummahs before us as well.

Which is closest to the truth? Allah knows best

The truth is somewhere in between all of these opinionsThis just shows you the RICHNESS of the word;

22

Page 23: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Shows how powerful and comprehensive it is.

The TECHNICAL DEFINITION OF SALAH vs the fiqh definition of salahThere are a few things we need to get out of the wayThe way the packets have been organized, you will see a lot of Arabic

We want to show translations DO NOT DO JUSTICE to the beauty of the Quran. Translations do NOT do justice to them

As a Musim community there needs to be GROWTH, we STARTED with translations, but it seems like we never got past that! It seems that the translations was a excuse for us not to do more!. We need to move past that. We try to inspire people to go PAST the translations to see the beauty of the Quran.

Translation is provided so you can compare translation with its in depth meaning discussed in class.

The second major disclaimer s that whenever we talk about salah, the first word that pops in someone mind is FIQH, oh okay, we will study fiqh-NO we wont. Theres nothing wrong with studying fiqh, but we focus on QUALITY over quantity. Its better to study 1 ayah with understanding than pages just reading it. We are focusing on ONE topic-not just fiqh.

FIQH DEFINITION ON SALAH- by worshiping Allah by certain knowledge. Lets look in the book

When you take the word salah and observe it in the Quran, its used as VERB, an action. The doer of the action many times is ALLAH himself! Can it mean worship then? NO, so we have to figure that out.If Allah is ever doing the action of salah in the Quran, then realize it means TO SEND SPECIAL MERCY AND SEPCIAL BLESSINGS - that’s what it means.33:43, Allah says “He is the one who does the act of salah on you”2:157 Allah says about patient people “Those are the people upon them are the salawaat from their Lord”- this means special blessings, mercy

Some places in the Quran, the doer of the action of salah are the angels themselves,33:56 “Most definitely Allah, and his angels, they “yasoolanah”, on the Prophet pbuhWhat does it mean- means TO PRAY FOR FORGIVENESS FOR SOMEONE40:7 “Angels are all glorifying and singing praises of their Lord, and they are SEEKING FORGIVENESS ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO HAVE BELEIVED. The angels are seeking forgiveness ON OUR BEHALF! When the angels do the act of salah means they are seeking forgiveness for us

If HUMANS are the doer of the action of salah- it means TO WORHISP. 4:103- Salah has most definitely been fixed62:9 When the call is made for salah… Talking about JUMAM ASTHAAN

All talks about the prayer of the Mushrikoon8:35 MOST INTERESTEING USE FO THE WORD SALAH IN QURANAllah says “He is telling us about the mushirkoon, the idolaters of makkah, before Islam came to them “And their salah was nothing but “ila MUkaa an” (whistling) (clapping) Allah is talking about mushirkoon, before Islam came to them they used to whistle and clap.

23

Page 24: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Now the mushirokoon, was their belief system correct? -NOWas the method correct? -NO (whistling and clapping)Their belief and method not correct, what they are whistling not correctDESPITE ALLL OF THAT, this incorrect worship that they are offering ALLAH STILL CALLS IT SALAH!. That tells you something…Allah could have sad IBAADAHTUM… he said SALAHTUWE learn that SALAH is a general word describing worshipAnd the lesson we can extract from that, just because someone is offering salah- its NOT GOOD ENOUGH, IT DOESN’T MEANS ANYITHING, ITCOULD BE GOOD, BAD, POSTIVE, NEGATIVE, IT COULD BE SOMETIHNG YOU GET REWARDED FOR OR SOTHING THEY CAN EVEN GET SIN FOR!!!

Bottom of page 41.03 Description of salah in the QURANThis is interesting

In the Quran there is word associationsAllah associated certain words with other wordsAnd associated words with concrete ideasThe association is created for a specific divine purpose and there is a reason and LESSON in it

Allah connects sabr with khayrWith sabr comes khayr

When Allah connects salah with something, an association is PERMENANTLY connectedMuhammad rasoolah, Muhammad IS the messenger of Allah

An association sometimes is created by SUBSTITUTION,. Everywhere in the Quran Allah says salah, salah, salah, salah then all of sudden Allah uses ANOTHER word for salah- (He substitutes it).

In the middle of Surah Baqarah- INSERT QURANIC AYAH2:143 “Here there is series of 7 ayah, starting with ayah 142 to 148In these 7 ayah, Allah is talking about one of the most major incidences in the life of the Prophet pbuh that was THE TURNING OF THE QIBLAH,We pray to Makkah, Muslims used to pray to AL QSA in JerusalemWhat happened was Prophet pbuh was able to pray at an anlge/direction toward Makkah AND Jerusalem at the same time.Once in Medina he wasn’t able to do that,Then Allah commanded that we turn the qiblah and prayThis was a PROFOUND strategic issueIt was a STATEMENT for not only Muslims but others as well

Because when they used to pray towards Jerusalem in Makkah, they were unique, no one else did it.One they went to Medina, the JEWS also prayed in that direction! So it gave a uniqueness to pray towards Makakh

24

Page 25: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

When the qiblah changed, the sahabah had a question, they were concerned about their ibaadah They asked “What happened to all the prayers we performed before this? those that prayed towards the old qiblah. Allah answered their question in this passage, in this ayah by saying

INSERT QURANIC AYAHWa Ma Kanallahu Liyudheea ImaanakumALLAH WILL NOT WASTE YOUR IMMAN.What were the sabahas question about? About SALAHHow did Allah respond? With IMAAN

There is a significance here. What is the bigger picture? IMAANSalah is a part of imaan. When you are referring to the part by mentioning the whole- the point is to show the IMPORTANCE of this part to the whole, to the entire piece. Allah refers to salah as IMAAN to show the MOST IMPORTANT THING TO YOUR IMAAN IS SALAH!

INSERT QURANIC AYAH2:238 AND STAND for the sake of Allah, COMPLETELY obedientQUNOOT means COMPLETE OBEDIENCE. Subservient to Allah This is another lesson in salahSalah demonstrates and TRAINS US,It trains a person how to live the REST of his life. How to behave and how to manage his life outside of the salah

What is the BEST position in salah? SUJOODThe Prophet pbuh said “A person is CLOSEST to Allah when he is in the position of sujood”What is the position of salah where we send the majority of our time in? QIYAAM where we spend the most timeWhat is the farthest position from sujood? QIYAM

The BEST position in salah is sujood but we spend majority of the position of time is spent in qiyaamWHY? Makes you thinkWe are being told sujood is best but we want you to spend very little time in the best positionIt is training you in obedienceYou cannot logically approach salah you need to approach salah through OBEDIENCE

INSERT QURANIC AYAH20:14Allah when speaking to Musa says“ESTABLISH THE SALAH, for the SAKE OF MY REMEMBRANCE “ Li Dhikri…Whats the connection between salah and dhikr? Salah has dhikr inside of itWe learn in Surah Ali Imran, Allah teaches us that the unique thing about the remembrance of Allah is that you can do it standing, sitting, or lying down on your side.

Whats the connection between salah and dhikr? If someone breaks a leg, they SIT DOWN and prayIf someone cant sit up, they pray LIEING DOWN

25

Page 26: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Just like dhikr applies to our whole life, salah is required our whole life, no exceptions!

INSERT QURANIC AYAH9:103 I have been firmly commanded to perform salah and give zakah AS LONG AS I AM ALIVE. I have to continue to pray AS LONG AS WE ARE BREATHING! SALAH IS OUR RESPONIBLITY

“Take from peoples wealth, charity, and it will purify them, was salli alayhim, and pray for them , WHATS THE WORD ASSOCIATED WITH SALAH? SAKAN- IT COMES FROM PEACE TRANQUILITY, It all comes from salah

1.04 WHAT IS KUSHUEveryone says the word, talks about it, no one knows what is means!!!! And its scary! People see it as a great mystery! The best way to figure out what a word means, is to look at how Allah used it in the Quran

INSERT QURANIC AYAH20:108- The voices will shake and tremble..You will hear nothing but light whispers, their eyes will be lowered and humbled. Faces on that day will have KHUSHOO

You ever see a face like you seen something horrible, and you can tell from that persons face something is wrong, something is off,

INSERT QURANIC AYAH41:39 You will see the earth with khushooThe earth will be trembling and shaking

INSERT QURANIC AYAH59:21 If we revealed Quran on mountains, it would be shaking and trembling

INSERT QURANIC AYAH42:45 they will be taken and presented before th fire of hell, they will be afraid of the helplessness that they will feel, They will be taken to the brink of the fire of hell. They KNOW they messed up, they know they are in trouble, they are busted, what will they do? They will be PEEKING FROM THE CORNER OF THIER EYES. When a child does something wrong what do they do? They AVOID EYE CONTACT, its that GUILTY FEELING INSIDE OF THEM!

Their faces have khushoo, the earth shakes, the people will be… Khushoo is what? ITS MORE EXTERNAL! Its important to understand thisWe always think khushoo talks about internally being submissive or filled with aw of Allah but whats unique is khushoo is THAT type of awareness of Allah, that MANIFESTS itself in you PHYSICALLY, You physically show the signs of the fact that you are SHAKEN UP.

If someone is standing in salah lazy, looking around, groggy, tired you can tell. IT PHYISCALLY MANIFESTS ITSELF

26

When you have khushoo, your FACE IS STRICKENYOU ARE COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED by the greatness of Allah whose presence you are STANDING in!

Page 61.05 IMPORTANCE OF KHUSHOOINSERT QURANIC AYAH8:2-4 Look at how Allah refers to people that perform salah in different methods. Allah refers to them differentlyPeople who are true believers, they have KUSHOO in their salahSo people who pray with khurhso Allah refers to them with what title? MUIMNOON (QAD AFLAHAL MUMINOOM)The muminoon are people when Allahs name is mentioned, their hearts TREMBLE!.Their imaan sky rockets. That is the effect of SALAH on a mu’min!Allah also talks about another person…

INSERT QURANIC AYAH70:19Certain people who PRAY, doesn’t say how they pray, or what the quality isAllah says “Ilal Muslieen- they are regular about their prayer”In their wealth they know there is a right, it is for the needy, for the destitute, They KNOW the day of judgment is coming,They are FEARFUL of the punishment of their LordThese type of people are described in what manner? POSITIVE, it’s a good peopleThey are called MUSALEEN Muminoon and Musalleen are both good

INSERT QURANIC AYAHIn surah 107:4-6 Fawaylulilmusaleen this person DESTROYED HIMSELF, its to have pity on someone. Lilmusaleen,Allah has pity on MUSLIEEN, people who are forgetful about their prayer, sometimes they pray on time, sometimes they don’t, not regular about their prayer, not careful.LacksadicasialWhen they do pray, they are showing off!NOW it is negative. What title is being used? MUSLALEEN

MUMINOON is always positiveMusalieen is sometimes positive, sometimes negative.

We want to be amongst the muminoon, and what quality do we need to be that? KUSHOUU

This is comparison from Quran and Hadith of Jibreel INSERT QURANIC AYAH4:142Allah talk s about hypocrites

27

Page 28: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

When they stand for prayer, they stand LAZY!!This person looks like strings are holding him up, he looks pathetic when he prays“They are showing off to the people”“And they have not a lot of remembrance in Allah except for little bit”…maybe here and there they recite fatiha, His mind is WANDERING..!!Even then they do pray, what is the primary objective? To show off

Lets look at hadith of JibreelINSERT HADITH“ISHSAAN- It is that you worship Allah AS IF YOU CAN SEE HIM!If you cant see him, Then most definitely He is MOST DEFINITELY IS WATCHING YOU. The true believer is only concerned with the idea that Allah is watching him

Page 71.06 The Prerequisites for Khushu1) Changing of Lifestyle:

Leaving sins and haramIncrease in practice of Sunan and Mustahabbat and NaflDecrease in vain and unnecessary indulgencesIncrease in Recitation and Study of the Quran

2) Preparing for salahFree yourself up and block out time in your schedule dedicated for salah (give it just as much importance as other items!)Perform salah at the preferred times (no delaying)Wudhu properly with sunnah, paying attention to detailsSiwaakGo to the masjid 15 minutes earlyListen to and repeat the adthaanPray with jamaatRelax and breath easy, start forgetting distractions and worries of the worldAsk for Allah’s help because you can’t do anything on your own

3) While performing salahKeep your eyes fixed at prescribed placesObserve and focus on postures in salahFocus on the meaning of what is recitedSLOW DOWN, pause after each verse and recite dhikr slowly with concentration

1.07 How do we approach salah vocabulary? We will study roots, conjugations, and derivatesLook at near synonyms and the implications of word choicesLook at usage of the Word in the Quran and SunnahAnalyze sentence structure and its eloquenceDiscuss deeper meanings of the words

2.01 THE OPENIING TAKBEER NiyyahIf you notice, niyyah is missing in this section.

28

Page 29: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Unanimously of all the scholars, INTENTION IS MUST OF SALAH IT’S A REQUIRMENT so why is it not placed here? From a fiqh perspective there is no VERBAL INTENTION prescribed

Arabic words for intentionThere ARE 3 different words for intentionNIYYAH- in classical arabic, means when you make the intention to do something but DO NOT SPEAK THE INTENTION, if you don’t say it its called niyyahThe second you verbalize it it’s not longer called niyyah, its called

IRAAADAH- not called niyyah in classical Arabic“When Allah intended to do something he SAYS IT and it is”

Then when you take physical steps and you do it or start doing it, once you take practical steps its calledAZM – Allah talks about AZM in Quran because it talks about ACTION and DOING

That’s why SALAH HAS NIYYAH, DO YOU VERBILIZE NIYYAH? NO, you don’t verbalize it

TAKBIR

TAKBEER MEANS TO SAY Allahu AkbarNow lets look at the two words

ALLAH-This is referred to ISM UZAAT There is a difference of opinion on the origin of the names of Allah, 2 basic opinions

1) The name of Allah is NOT derived from root, but unique name of Devine. From the beginning its been unique name of Allah

2) Second opinion is that the word has been derived, there is a rootBefore moving forward, know the definitionThere are 2 types of words in classical arabic

1) JAAMID- means an original unique word, not derived from anywhere2) Mushtaq-means derived .It was derived from somewhere. It has a root and you know what the

root isRule of thumb: If a word is assumed to be jaamid unless proven other wise. When you walk thru the door and a word is right there, you naturally assume it to be JAAMID UNELSSS you prove it to be mustaqh. You need to PROVE it to be mustaqh. If you cant prove it, its safe to assume jaamid. This is rule of Arabic grammar so default is jaamid

So we have 1 group of scholars that say NO, name of Allah is unique wordBut majority of Islamic scholars say it has been derived from root, okay, than we ask where is it derived from. Then we have 4 different opinions- so those scholars that say it is derived

1) ALA HA YA LA HU- it means to worship or to be enslaved to someone or something2) WA LI HA YA LI HOO- means to be overwhelmed, to be shocked and amazed by something3) LA HA YA LUHOO- this is very archaic word, means to create. 4) LA HA YA LI HOO- means to be high, to be hidden, because Allah is hidden from the eyes of the

creation. They say original word was ILAAH- form the 4 opinions.

29

Page 30: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Now how do you make something proper in Arabic. You add ALNow you have AL ILAAH, do that sound difficult to say? Yes, its heavyArabic has a whole study of making words as smooth as possible to say. We remove E from middle, we get ALLAHThey say that is how it happened

Evidence for Name of Allah being Unique

Evidence 1: What was the rule of thumb we learned? Can they concretely establish and prove root? NO, they cant decide, what is safer bet, to assume its JAAMIDLaam is not an awful letter, it’s a LIGHT letterWith the exception of ALLAHITS AN ENTIRE LANGUAGE AND THROUGH THE ENTIRE LANGUAGE IN EVERY SITUATION laam is a light letter in any place, EXCEPT FOR ONE WORD, ALLAH. That is a unique rule just for the name of Allah , this is evidence 2 that Allah is a unique word

Evidence 3 that name of Allah is uniqueWhen you call out to someone, how do you do it?YAYA ZAID (hey zaid)But there is one issue, if I am trying to call someone or something and the word I am trying to call their name or thing begins with ALIF LAAM, say a boyAL WALADYa al walaad, you CANT just put “ya” because it starts with ALIF and LAAmWhat’s the buffer? AYU HAASo I should sayYA AYU HAL WALADExample in Quran is YA AYU HALATHEENA AAMANUThere is ONE exception to this ruleYOU CAN SAY YA ALLAH., ONLY EXCEPTION TO THIS RULEIt’s unique, has its own rule!

Evidence 4ALLAH HUMMAIts in the QuranYou know what it is?It’s a name fo Allah with a meem and shadhah after itWhat does that mean? It means YA ALLAHBasically uttering a meem at the end is the SAME as putting a YA in the frontSlight difference, Allah humma is more passionate, thats why its used in supplications, but essentially in meaning it’s the same!If thats what it is , instead of saying ya zaid,Can we say zaidumma? MUHAMAD-DUMA? NoTHE ONLY NAME YOU CAN PUT A MEEM AND SHADDAH ON IT IS ALLAHThis gives evidence that the name of Allah is unique.

AKBAR30

Page 31: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

This comes from the root of the word means something to be BIG, something to be GREATThe interesting thing is, AKBAR is the pattern of the word called ISMUL TAQDEER (the COMPARATIVE PATTERN)So for example,Zaid is smarter than Khalid (COMPARATIVE)Khalid is the fastest (SUPERALITVE)SimilarlyAKBAR, it is the COMPARATIVE, it means GREATER, (NOT greatest)ALLAHUAKBAR, means Allah is greater.

ALLAH IS GREATER, does that sound like a complete sentence? -NoZAID IS FASTER THAN… you would logically ask WHO? Zaid is father than who?

Similarly certain statements DEMAND an objectThus, We say Allah is greater then…In classical arabic its left open FOR A PURPOSEThis happens in QuranINSERT QURANIC AYAHFIRST AYAH OF HUJARAATObject is needed to complete the statement but its l eft blank

Its done to PERSONALIZE the message! So now that its open ended and you can apply to it mentally, internally in your contemplation to WHAT EVER APPLIES TO YOUR SITUATION

So you are at work with work that is due and time for salah comesALLAH IS GREATER THAN WORKIf you are at school or studying for an exam and time for salah comesALLAH IS GREATER THAN SCHOOL If you are being distracted by your children,ALLUHAKBAR- ALLAH IS GREATER THAN MY LOVE FOR MY CHILDREN

If its time for Fajr and its difficult to wake upALLAHUAKBAR-ALLAH IS GREATER THAT MY REST, MY SLEEP

It’s a personalized message! ALLAH IS GREATER THAN WHAT EVER AT THIS POIINT IN TIME IS DISTRACTING YOU FROM YOUR SALAH!!!!

2.02 OPENING SUPPLICATIONThere are 7 or 8 opening supplications narrated by the Prophet pbuhOut of them 3 of them are the most popular onesWe will study all three of them- that way everyone is covered.Even if you choose to recite one of them or ALL THREE OF THEM, they are authentic prophetic supplicationsThis is THE MOST DIFFUCLT PART OF THE COURSE,

1) What you will come across is new vocabulary so this is the slow part of course. We need to work through it!

31

Page 32: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

2) All thee supplications are completely different from one another, but we cover so much vocabulary that once we go forward the ball starts to role, you know the words and it becomes easier. We NEED to have the habit that once we come across word once, or 2nd time, we need to KNOW the word. This is best way to stay alert and retain what we learned.

3) Saturday is hard work, it’s not just a conceptual course, it an APPLIED course. Saturday is a lot of work, when you are building vocabulary, Sunday is the fun part of the course. We save interesting part for what we study on Sunday. Sunday is more enjoyable. Saturday is WORK. You have to focus and put effort into Saturday.

FIRST OPENING SUPPLICATION 1/3

ALLAHUMA- YA ALLAH

BAA IDH- Comes form root of word for SOMETHING TO BE DISTANT, FAR, it’s the ANYTONYM of kareeb, Something is far and distant. This specific form of the word is the COMMAND FORM. It’s the sophisticed, exaggerated form of the word- it implies MUTUAL ACTION, means OH ALLAH PUT A HUUUGEE AMOUNT OF DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. BaaidhThe 2 different things are

BAYNEE WA BAYNEE KHATTAYAY

BAYNEE- is 2 wordsBAYNA- is the first word meaning BETWEEN, comes from same word MUBEEN, bayinaat, bayina all come from same root word, MEANING TO CLARIFY SOMETHINGAlso means TO PUT CLEARLY BETWEEN

EE- me

Oh Allah put a great distance clearly between ME and…

WA- AND

KHATA YAA YA-Plural word, The singular of this word is KHATEE AH, normally this word is translated as SINS, but that is not an accurate translationKHATEE AH refers to MISTAKES, errors, slipups which is LESS than sins,. Sins implies you knew what you were doing was wrong, KHATEE AH is slip up, you didn’t realize you made a mistake. KHATA YAH is pluralYA at the end means MY (to show possession) MY MISTAKES,MY ERRORSMY SLIP UPS

O Allah put a huge amount of distance clearly between me and my mistakes, my slips up Why is the word mistakes used and not sins? Because if We are asking Allah, Khatayah is thing YOU DON’T EVEN REALIZE YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG

32

Page 33: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

If we are asking Allah to remove from us, to distance from us from things we DIDN’T even realize we did wrong, OBVIOSLY we are also being distanced from our SINS as well!! We are asking OH ALLAH REMOVE MY sins and slip ups

KA MAA- just like, Just as

BA ATA- past tense form of BAA ID Just like you placed a huge amount of distance

AL MASHRIK – means the EAST, comes from root word SHARK, to fill something with light, to illuminate something

So why would the root of east come from fill with light? BECAUSE OF THE SUN!

AL MAGHRIB and the west, almaghrib refers to THE WESTWe also call salah maghribThe salah maghrib occurs at what time? SUNSETThe root of this word refers to something being FAR AWAY, something GOING AWAY, something VANISHIHNG, DISAPPEARINGWhy would the west be called/referred to something vanishing? SUN IS GOING away, SUN DISAPPEARS!!

WORD:GHAREEB- means stranger, why is a stranger called gharee? Because he comes form somewhere we don’t know about! Place not known to us!

GHURABAA- plural

GHURAAB- means crow- comes from same root which means to vanish and disappearLike many cultures, the jahiliya arabs where very superstitious people and they have attached a lot of superstition to the crow. They used to see crows as evil omens. They used to mean death. If they saw a flock of crows over a village it means someone will die so they gave it a name GHURAAB thinking they would go away. They prided themselves on their words. They thought words were very powerful and thought if you called it ghuraab it would vanish

NEXT there are 3 portions, sectionsWe covered first sectionOH ALLAH PUT A HUGE DISTANCE CLEARLY BETWEEN ME AND MY ERRORS JUST LIKE YOU HAVE PUT A HUGE AMOUNT OF DISTANCE BETWEEN EAST AND WESTNOW Imagine from the perspective of the Prophet pbuh who taught us this, you look all the way east and west, how large is that distance? ENORMOUS.

NEXT SECTION

ALLAHUMA- Ya Allah

NAQINEE - NAQI- Comes from root of word meaning to CLEAN SOMETHING OF, to BRUSH SOMETHING OFF. If I drop food on the table, and brush the food off, what have I done? NAQI

NEE- MeMEANS CLEAN AWAY FROM ME, BRUSH AWAY FROM ME

MIN- from

KHATA YA ya- MY sins

KAMA- just like

YOU NAQAA- just like it is removed

ASTHOWB- from clothes

AL ABYADH- WHITEWhat’s another word that sounds like this? BAYDHAA- means eggs (because eggs are white)Just like it is removed

MIN ADANAS- DANAS- means a type of filth that leaves a stainVery specific word, its important to know that it stainsBecause sometimes things fall on your clothes, like bread falls, that doesn’t leave a stainBut say biryani falls on clothes, it DOES leave stain

O ALLAH BRUSH AWAY FROM ME, MY MISTAKES MY ERRORBut even though we are distant, it leaves behind effects, it leaves behind residue

The word DANAS was used, I removed rice/biryani from clothes, now is there a stain? Yes, what can I do? WASH IT

IGHSILNEEIGHSIL- command to wash

NEE- me

MIN- FROM

KHATAYAYA- my mistakes my errors

BILMAA EEBA- Its not just a letter, it’s a WORD, in Arabic certain letters also function as words. WOW, LAAM, even though its just letters, it functions as a word. BA- means with, using

34

Page 35: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

O ALLAH WASH ME FROM MY MISTAKES AND ERROS USING WATER

MAEE- WATER

WA SALJ - Wa- andSalj- means snow in classical ArabicModern times it means ice

WAL BARADH- BARADH means ice

O ALLAH WASH ME FROM MY MISTAKES AND ERRORS USING WATER AND SNOW AND ICE

FIRST WE SAID O ALLAH PUT A HUUGE DISTANCE

THEN SECOND STEP, ITS LEFT A RESIDUE BEHIND, SCRAPE THAT AWAY, REMOVE IT AWAYBUT THE WORD WAS DANAS- IT LEFT A STAIN NOW

THIRD STEP WASH THAT STAIN AWAY, WHAT EVER EFFECTS OF THOSE SINS LEFT, WASH ME COMPLETELY

What’s this about, water, snow, and ice? It’s the PROGRESSION OF ICEWHATS colder than water? Snow, What colder then snow? IceO Allah I have small thing, water will workThen there are bigger things, snow will work

The worse and bigger they get, scrape them all away!

Why the escalation in coldness?Because what’s the consequence of bad sins? FIREAs my sins get worse and worse, they bring me closer and closer to the fire of Allah, O Allah remove me farther way!

THE THEME OF THIS IS PURITY AND CLEANLINESS, PURIFICATION

This supplication has 3 parts, because we see ALLAHUMMA 3 TIMES

But how many times do we see KAMAA?TWICE so the first 2 parts have kamaaKamaa is used to draw analogy to something. This shows us the eloquence of the Prophet pbuhO Allah remove my sins away like east and westThen it say o Allah brush sins way like filth is brushed off white clothesLook at how the Prophet pbuh describes, he merges the two parallels together

35

Page 36: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

O ALLAH WASH ME, (doesn’t talk about clothes) WASH ME FROM MY MISTAKESHE MERGED 2 TOGETHER, NO MORE KAMAAWATER SHOULD HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT CLOTHES but he merged two together

SINS ARE A NATURAL OBSTACLE TO KHUSHOO, A PERSON CANNOT ATTAIN KHUSHOO WHILE HE IS STILL IMMERSED IN SIN!! A PERSON WILL NOTICE, THE MORE HE CURBS TO TAKE SINS OUT OF HIS LIFE, HE WILL EXPERIENCE HIS SALAH MORE AND MORE, THE MORE HE CUTS SIN FROM HIS LIFE.

SECOND OPENING SUPPLICATION 2/3PAGE9Abdullah ibn Masood narrates this supplication to usThe Prophet pbuh saidTHESE WORDS ARE SOME OF THE MOST BELOVED WORDS A PERSON CAN SAY TO ALLAH!

The THEME of this supplication is PRAISE AND GLORIFICATION OF ALLAH

SUBHANAKA- 2 wordsSubhana- comes from the root word which means TO SWIMWhat does that have to do with praising Allah?SABAHA means to swim in classical ArabicAL AWM refers to when you swim with your head under waterSabaha refers to when you swim with head over waterAllah is A LEVEL ABOVE HIS CREATIONLevel above faultAbove creationJust like head is above waterTHEN there is deeper reflection in this word as well, -WHATS something required for swimming?YOU NEED TO CONSTANTLY MOVE, IF YOU STOP, YOU DROWN, YOU SINKSimilarity, TASBEEH refers to praising and glorifying Allah. It is to remind us that THE ONLY WAY TO STAY AFLOAT IN THE SEA OF TEMPTATION IS TO STAY IN THE REMEMBERANCE OF ALLAH. THE MOMENT WE STOP, WE WILL SINK INTO THE TEMPTATION. We need to constantly to dhikr- remembrance of Allah

SUBHAAN- this is a specific form of the word, like subhaan , it signifies ABUNDANCESo if I say subhaan relating to talking about how perfect Allah is, subhaan means how ABSOLOUTLY PERFECT ALLAH IS! HOW AMAZINGLY FLAWLESS ARE YOU, KA-attached pronoun meaning YOU referring to Allah

ALLAHUMA- YA ALLAH

WA BI HAMDIKA-4 wordsWa- ANDBi- and withHamdi- PRAISE And with praise

36

Page 37: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

KA- your (to show possession)

AND WITH YOUR PRAISE

HOW amazingly perfect are you with your praise!

WA TA BARAKA- Comes from the root of the word BARAQAH, not just blessing, BLESSINGS THAT ARE LONG LASTING and BLESSINGS THAT PERPETUALLY INCREASE. Baqraqah- the root word, means long lasting blessingsTo further explain what this word means lets look at derivates

BIRKAH – refers to HUGE pond, water that has been sitting around for a long time, 100s of years.BARAKAL BAEERU- camels, they are very interesting animals, even in their behavior. They are very obedient and very loyal but THEY ACT IN PRINCIPLE, (dogs are loyal and obedient, even if you abuse it. It still remains loyal to you) however NOT camels, if you abuse camels, it will let you know.So when a camel becomes aggravated, they will SIT DOWN. Then you CANNOT make it move. You cant move it. It puts up the fight of his life. When it does that, its called BARKAL BAEERU

TABAARAKA is an exaggerated form of word, means MOST BLESSED

ISMUKA-ISM- nameKA- yourMost blessed is your name!We are speaking with Allah

Why say Allahs name is blessed? Why not say most blessed is YOU, most blessed is Allah? TABARAKTA means most blessed are you.Why say name?2 reasons1st If someone’s NAME is most blessed, imagine how much more blessed that person must beIts a powerful way of making the point. 2nd thing, how do we seek blessings from Allah? Allah is the sole source but how do we get it? By the NAME OF ALLAH, WHEN YOU START SOMETHING, WHAT DO YOU START WITH? You say BISMILLAH, when you intend to do something INSHALLAH, when you are impressed by something MASHALLAH, You seek blessings in your life this way at all times!

WA TA AA LAATAA LAA- means for something to be very very high. Means how amazingly high, most high

JADUKA- JAD-in arabic means RESOLVE, determination,For humans jad can mean will power, So we are speaking to Allah, YOUR RESOLVE IS MOST HIGHMeans your resolve, your determination, SUPERSEDES and OVERIDES anyone and anything else.So when Allah has destined that something will happen, nothing can stop it or change it!

37

Page 38: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

WA LAA ILAAHAWA- andLAA- no

However there are 2 types of LAA- normal laa (no) and then there is a special la which means (ABSOLOUTLY NOT!) (NO WAY, NO HOW, ABSOLOUTLY NO) It removes ANY room for any exception to be made in any way or shape fo form. How do you tell difference between the 2 types of LAA?This is special La, it means ABSOLOUTLY NO,ILAA means someone of something that is object of worshipABSOLOUTLY POSITIVELY NO ONE IS WORTHY OF WORSHIP

GHAYROOKAGHAYR- other thanKA- youThere is NOTHING worthy of worship other than YOU.

AND MOST BLESSED IS YOUR NAMEAND MOST EXALTED IS YOUR RESOLVE AND DETERMINATIONAND ABSOLOUTLY POSTIVELY THERE IS NO ONE WORHTY OF WORSHIP OTHER THAN YOU

The theme of this supplication is the praise and glorification of Allah

THIRD OPENING SUPPLICATION 3/3Top of Pg 10

The first 2 supplications are Prophetic SupplicationsTHIS SUPPLICATION is derived from versus of Quran. This is a QURANIC SUPPLICATION

THE THEME of this supplication is: MISSION STATEMENT OF A BELIEVER, this supplication teaches us, solidifies us, with what are the objectives of our lives, what is the purpose of our lives, and why we live life.

WAJAHTU – literally means I have turned my face-It comes from the root of the word FACE. Its like the face being verbified. This is why translations DON’T always work. We need to build familiarity with nuances of the word. They have rhetoric and expressions. When someone says WHATS UP but if you break t down linguistically it doesn’t make sense. Why would I be asking you “tell me items that are facing upword or have a location above me?”…

“Ill get by”- These are phrases,Why do we assume Arabic doesn’t have expressions? We somehow feel Quran can be studied word for wordYou have to understand EXPRESSIONS and various functions of the language.

38

Page 39: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

When you are referring to the WHOLE by mentioning the portion (steve jobs released ipad, did steve job do it? No, APPLE did it) But since Steve jobs is the most important person in apple you can say that. Sometimes you talk about whole by mentioning a portion because it is the most important part.

THE MOST RESEPCTABLE NOBLE PART OF OUR BODY IS THE FACEIts how we are identifiedDoes a driver license have a picture of your hand on it? No its has your FACETHE FACE IS THE NOBLITY OF THE BODY, IT IS THE IDENTIFIER!

In Arabic above meansI HAVE TURNED MY FACE MEANS- I HAVE DEDICATED MYSELF, I HAVE COMMITED MYSELF TO SOMETHINGIt’s an expression.

WAJHIYA-COMPLETLYWAJ- faceIY- my My face

I have COMMITTED MYSELF COMPLETELY

Look at the salah, FIQH questionIn the Quran, Allah told us to pray towards KabahTurn your FACE towards masjid alhraamTURN YOUR FACEIt says turn your face. If I LITERALLY TAKE THE AYAH, Can you pray like that? Can I have my face in the direction while sujood and ruku?

WAJAHTUI HAVE COMMITED MYSELF COMPLETELY AND WHOLE HEARTEDLY

LILALDHEELi- (laam) in arabic language it means FOR THE SAKE OFAladhee- the one whoI have committed myself to the one who…FATARA

FA TA RA- Normally this word is translated as CREATED.Ibn Abbas- great scholar of tafsir, he said I was confused about KHALAQAH and FATARAHe said when Ibn Abbas and I would travel, people came to him to get a question answered and they were fighting over a well, who the well belonged toFirst one said THIS well belongs to me, I purchased the land and the well is inside the land so I purchased the wellHe asked the 2nd person- I AM THE ONE WHO FATARAD the wellIt doesn’t just mean CREATE, create is general, you can take 2 things and plop them together and make something CREATE something newBut FA TA RA means ORIGINATE. To make something new, to bring something into existence for the first time.

39

Page 40: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

FA TA RA means HE ORIGINATED

I HAVE COMPLETELY WHOLE HEARTEDLLY DEDICATED MYSELF FOR THE ONE WHO HAS ORGINATED

AS SA MAA –plural of skiesWAL ARD- and the groundWhen used TOGETHER, it refers to SKY AND THE GROUND

HANEEFAN- Lets look at what is means by looking at another wordAHNAF- anyone know what pigeon toes are like-walks with feet inward. But some people have major problems, their feet are severely turned inwards. We don’t see it as much, now we have way to fix it. In classical times you would see people like that, people whose feet were very turned it. So when they walked, their feet would go towards the centerRAJULOON AHNDARHA NA FIYA- water tapWhy? Imagine a huge tank of water, what does the faucet do? It FOCUSES water, stream lines all that water into drain

HANEEF- means FOCUSED

I have whole heartedly dedicated myself for the one who originated the heavens and earth and I WILL REMAIN COMMITTED TO THIS (HANEEFAN) I am focused, no looking right and left

WA- and

MAA- one of the most difficult words to figure out, MA in some places means NO, in some places it means WHAT, in some places means THAT WHICH, (sentence connector) Ma has drastically different uses. MA- means NO, it’s a negative somethingTo negate an idea, a concept, a possibility to negate something people have preconceived notions about. This is extracted from the statement of IBRAHIM (alayhisalaam) The mushrikoon used to claim to follow him

WA MAA ANA- And I AM NOT Min- formALMUSHRIKEEN- those people who associate partners with Allah

Mushrikeen- comes from the root of SHIRK, linguistically this also means TO PARTNER. That’s why in modern Arabic a public trading company is SHA RIKAH, because you can become a partner in it

I AM NOT FROM THOSE PEOPLE WHO MAKE PARTNERS WITH ALLAH

INNA- its for emphasis, its used to remove DOUBT, it means MOST DEFINETLY, certainly

SALAH- Prayer (worship)40

Page 41: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

TI- MY

Most definitely my worship, my prayer

WA –andNUSOOK- Plural of the word NASEEKAIn classical Arabic refers to the tools which are used to purify gold and silver. What ever the tools the person uses is called nasseeka, It literally means TOOLS USED TO CLARIFY in the ISLAMIC context it refers to SACRIFICES, the difficulties we endure,

Most definitively my prayer and my sacrifices

WA -and

MAHYAA- its comes from the root word HAYAAT(meaning life) . Whenever you have this form, it’s the “-ING” version of a word. This means MY LIVINGHayaat is interesting word in classical Arabic.HAYAA- modesty (because in modesty is the quality of life!!)Istihyaa- to shy away from something , to back away from something, to become embarrassed or shy. You are trying to protect your dignityHAYWAAN- a living creature, that has life.

HAYA ALASALAH- from adthaan, normally means come to salah- NO it doesn’t!HAYA in Arabic language form the root word meaning LIFE, hayya means LIVE (structure you life) ALAA- on top of (based on)SALAH- salahSTRUCTURE YOUR LIFE BASED ON SALAHThere is a very important lesson in that for us!. Our attitude in terms of salah is that we make salah a burden, something we “add on” or “Squeeze” into ourschedule. We need to WORK AROUND OUR LIFE based on salah. Work, school, family, friends. Everything else is priority but not salah. In the HOME, at home, at wok, YOU SHOULD HAVE A FIXED TIME for salah. That’s called dedication for salah.

YA-my

FIX the time of salahTHAT’S HOW YOU TEACH YOUR KIDS HOW TO PRAY,By showing them the importance!!!Its how you bring them up!Its how you raise them!!YOU need to SHOW THEM it’s a priority FOR YOU

Prophet forbade person to pray when distracted by human needsWE ARE PREOCCUPIED WITH EVERYTHING ELSE EXCEPT SALAH!

HAYATUN- means snake. The word for snake in Arabic comes form the root word meaning LIFE

41

Page 42: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

1) The arabs sometimes having the habit of giving the name of opposite. So since snakes takes lives they gave it hayatun

2) Snakes shed, so when ancient arabs saw shedding they thought it was giving life to itself. 3) When ancient arabs saw snake for the first time, since it sits in a coil, they associated it with how

you can tell how old tree is by looking at its rings. So snake tells you how long its been alive by showing you its coils

WA -andMA MAA T- comes from the word MAWT- meaning DEATH. The form is in the ING version, so means my dying

MY living and my dying

LILLAHI- is for Allah. Letter Lam- for

IS FOR ALLAH

RABIL ALMEENRAB- lord, masterAlaamaeen- nations

Page 43: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

AND I AM WITH THOSE WHO SUBMIT

And I am focused, And I am most definitely not one of those people who commit shirkMy prayers, my sacrifices, my living, and even my dying is for ALLAH ALONE, his rabulalaameen, He is the master of the day of judgmentThat is what I have been commanded to live by, to spread, and I amongst the muslims

Its gives clarity-who we are

2.03 ISTIADAHTop of Pg 11

There is an extended version alsoAOODHU- comes from the root word AL AWDTH means TO CLING TO SOMETHING FOR THE SAKE OF PROTECTION for a sense of security. Means awdthIn classical Arabic, they would say a fawn (baby deer) CLINGS to its mother, its constantly standing next to the mother, constantly maintaining physical contact. It does that for the sake of protection. The arabs would call the fawn AWD

AOO DHOO means- I TAKE PROTECTION

ISTIADHAH- means to take protectionThe translation “I SEEK REFUGE” is wrong, The letters “seen” and “ta” add the meaning of SEEKING to a wordDo you hear seen or ta in AUDHU? NO .Its not seek , its I TAKE protectionBecause when supplicating to Allah for something, to be a little insistent is loved by Allah. O ALLAH I NEED YOUR PROTECTION! I NEED IT NOW! You are insisting! The Prophet pbuh used to do thisOn the night before the battle of badr, Prophet pbuh was saying O ALLAH YOU HAVE TO SAVE THESE PEOPLE, IF WE DIE, NO ONE WILL WORSHIP YOU PROPERLY ON THE EARTH. It shows the DESPERATION of the personAOODHU- I TAKE PROTECITON

BILLAHILetter Ba- withAllah

MIN- from

ASHAYTAAN- satan. The devil. The root of the word is SHA TA NOON. In Arabic SH TA Nun is a LONG ROPE, the 2 ends are very far from each otherBi Roon shatoonoon -deep empty well (very dangerous)

SHAYTAN IS VERY VERY VERY DISTANT FORM THE MERCY OF ALLAH

RAJEEM- root word rajm means TO DISCARD SOMETHING, TO THROW SOMETHING AWAY. This word has a negative connotation. When you throw something away carelessly. You throw a rock, that’s called rajm. When you throw a ball its different, its called RAMU at a target

I take refuge from shaytaan WHO HAS BEEN DISCARDED LIKE TRASH,

EXTENDED VERSION of ISTIADHAH (top of age 11)

MIN- fromAnd I ALSO take refuge from him (he)

HE HE HE means his his his referring to shytaanHis hamaz, nafakh, his nafas

“I seek refuge with Allah from satan the rejected one, from his madness, his arrogance, and his poetry”

HAMAZ- root of this word means TO POKE something. Or someoneThe Prophet pbuh defined the poking of shaytaan as the INSANITY OF SHAYTAAN, the craziness of shaytaan what does that have to do with poking? Example: you are sitting in class and someone sitting behind you and in front. The person in front isn’t paying attention to you in the middle and the teacher is turned around doing something at the boardThe person behind you is saying “psst flick his ear”Hurry, the teacher will turn aroundThe kid behind you is egging youCmon do it do it! He is poking youWhat do you turn around and tell him “Are you crazy or something? Leave me alone”Shaytaan is OBSESSED with us, he is crazyWhen we come into the masjid, guess who comes inside the majsid with you? SHAYTAANTo make sure you don’t pray tahtul masjid, he makes you read the bulletin board (even though nothing has changed)

The Prophet pbuh said as soon as muadthin calls adthaan, shaytaan RUNS FOR HIS LIFE, it terrifies him. He is breaking wind as he runs. The interesting thing is as SOON as the adhtaan finishes, what does he do? He comes right back“Hey what are you going to eat after jummah?”He starts messing with you againHE IS OBSESSSED

NAFAKH- literally means to inflate, to blow air into something, like inflating balloon into ballThe Prophet pbuh described this as the arrogance of shaytaanWhen someone is arrogant you say he is FULL of himself, big head,Shaytaan FANS THE FLAME, he tries to grow it. He fans the flame of your arrogance. Makes you think to another brother “Who does he think he is? Does he know who I am? HOW DARE HE TALK TO ME LIKE THAT”Shaytaan INFALTES your ego“I AMTHE MAN”

NA FA Shhh- When you talk, you slightly have spit come out (its filled in your mouth) while you talk, literally that’s what it means, when someone talks they lightly spit at you. The Prophet pbuh defined this as SHI-RUHOO the ENHANCEMENT of shaytaan, the POETRY OF SHAYTAAN,. Shaytaan goes RIGHT NEXT TO YOUR EAR, if someone talks so close to your ear, they would be spitting on you, SHAYTAAN DOESNT GIVE UP

I TAKE REFUGE FROM ALLAH FROM SHAYTAAN WHO IS DISCARDEDAND REFUGE FROM HIS INSANITY, HIS INFLATTING, HIS ARROGANCE, AND HIS ENHANCEMENT, HIS NON STOP TRYING TO CONVINCE ME, AND TALK TO ME

When do we recite ADUHUBILLAHI?When ever we recite Quran. LOOK AT THE PROPHET PBUH, think about how CALM COOL AND COLLECTED the Prophet pbuh was.Remember the beduion who urinated in the majsid? There was NO REACTION, no emotional outburst from the Prophet pbuh!

When young man came to Prophet pbuh and said “I want to commit zina “ in publicWhen man who took loan from prophet came and forcefully asked to have it paid backAll these instances the Prophet pbuh kept his cool!

2.04 THE BASMALATop of pg. 12

The EARLIEST of scholars would refer to basmala as the TASMIYAHThe letter Ba- in the arabic language has about 12 uses12 meanings as a WORD in the languageBut we will only share 5BA

1. Sometimes Ba can be used to show 2 things are INTIMATELY connected (2 show 2 things are intimately and permanently connected) “the messenger came to you with the truth from your Lord)

2. Can mean “with the help of”- Katabtu bil qalam- I wrote with the help of the pen3. Ba can mean AT THE PLACE OF - “Allah most definitely helped you at the place of Badr”4. Sometimes it is used to take an OATH, occurs in 2 places in the Quran, Allah in these places Allah

takes an oath LAA UQSIMU BIYOWMIL QIYAMMAHAnd LAA UQSIU BI HADHAL BALAD these are some different uses for the letter ba

5. Ba can be used to show the cause of something. What comes AFTER ba is the CAUSE of , the reason for, what comes before Ba. “All the chaos in the land and sea is a direct result of what the people have done with their own 2 hands”

In bismillah, Ba means WITH THE HELP OF

ISM- means name. Its root words has 2 opinionsRoot of SUMOO- means to elevate somethingTo separate from rest of pact

Root of WISMOON- means to brand or mark something. When we know someone by name its like we brand them with that name.

Which one seems more logical? The SECOND one. In reality it’s the FIRST ONE that is the correct opinion based on linguistic reasons.

Plural of the word ISM is ASMAA

BISMILLAHI BEGIN WITH THE HELP OF THE NAME OF ALLAH

Who is ARAHMAAN- abundantly mercifulAraheem- constantly merciful

WHO IS ABDUNTLY MERCIFUL, WHO IS CONSTANTLY MERCFIUL

Hadith: An act that is not started by saying bismallah, it is devoid of blessing!”*

HADITH: 2 BIG GIFTS FROM ALLAHIbn Abbas narrates

BAYNA MAA JIBREEL- jibrel was sitting with the messenger of AllahSAMIAN AQEEDAN- he heard a sound from up aboveHe heard the sound like a door is being open after a long time, it creaks openHe raised his head, this is the door in the heavens, its been opened today, its never been opened EVER before today. An angel came down from this door, This is an angel that has descended down to the earth to the ground, this angel has NEVER come down to the earth This angel said salaamThe angel said “Congratulations, you have been givin 2 gifts, 2 honors that no prophet before you was EVER given before you”

First gift- FATIHASecond gift- the last 3 ayahs of Surah Baqaarah

ANY TIME YOU RECITE EVEN A LETTER OR A WORD, YOU WILL BE BLESSED WITH REWARD, YOU PRAYERS AND SUPPLICATIONS AND DUAS WILL BE ANSWERED. We will study the LAST THREE AYAH OF SURAH BAQARAH.

We need DIVERSITY in what we read in our salah. If you have more memorized something, READ IT!

3.01 WE GO INTO RUKUTop of page 13We say Allahu akbar,This phrase is constantly repeated in SALAH!Allah is greater than BLANK (what ever is distracting you from Allah in salah)Many times we start salah right, then all of sudden become distracted…something pops into your mind So when you go into ruku- you REFOCUS, ALLAH IS GREATER THAN MY PHONE BUZZING, THAN KIDS RUNNING LAPS AROUND ME,Why are you wasting your focus? Especially at such an amazing precious time?!

ADHMUN- bone- strongest part of bodyADHEEM- is the one who is CONSTANTLY FIRMCONSTANTLY STABLE

SUBHANALLAHHOW AMAZINGLY PERFECT IS MY LORD THE ONE WHO IS STRONG AND STABLE

Now we want to connect the posture of ruku to the strength and stability. Why do we say this particular tasbeeh in ruku? The position in ruku is THE MOST VULRENABLE AND UNBALANCED POSITION in salahIt’s a very awkward positionWhen in ruku, THE BALANCE OF YOUR BODY IS OFFEven the strongest person in ruku, if someone ran into them from the side, they would fall downWe are very unstable VulnerableWeakWHEN WE ARE VULRENABLE, WEAK UNSTABLE, WHAT DO WE ATTIBUTE TO ALLAH? STRENGTH AND STABILITY

We can introduce people to EXTRA THINGS THAT we can recite that we don’t normally do

EXTENDED DHIKR IN RUKUNormally we say subhanarabialadheemSUBUUHUN QUDOOSUN-Sounds like subhana, root is SA BA HASubhAAN talks about ABUNDANCE, HOW ABSOLOUTLY ABDUNDANT

SUBHOOHUN- CONSTANCY- how Allah is CONSTANTLY FLAWLESS

QUDUSOON- comes from root word QUDS, implies something to be sacred, holy, pure, Allah is the one who is SACRED, HOLY AND PURE and He only accepts that which is pure, We are reminding ourselves , what ever we present to Allah, it needs to be PURE,It needs to be SINCERE, SINCERTY IS THE PURITY OF ACTIONS

RABULMALAAKITI WAROOH - RAB- Lord, masterAL MALAAKI- angelsMALAAIKA- is pluralThe singular is ma la koon- one angelWhat are the 3 root letters? MEEM LAAM KAAFThis is an interesting situation, the 3 root letters are NOT thisHAMZA, LAAM KAAF! What the word A LA KA means WHEN THE HORSE BITES DOWN ON THE REIGNS, when does a horse bite down on reins? WHEN ITS RUNNING REALLY FAST. THIS IS talking about angels because angels are like messengers (not like prophets) they run errands, they are given tasks and they are focused on it.“Allah has made angels as messengers” –Angels are sent on errandsWho do you want for you to do errands? The guy running 25 mph, gets coffee, stops once in a while is that the guy you want?Or the guys who zips every and shows up and DONEOne thing you need to understand that ARABIC HAS IMAGERY, VERY VIVID LANGUAGE, WORDS HAVE IMAGERY

Malaaika is supposed to make you think about a person who is given a task, an errand48

These people on their horses are RUNNING FASTTHIS is the root of the word

MA’ LA KUUN, this is difficult to say, so they smooth it out, they remove hamza and make it MA LA KOON

WA ROOH- soul, spritWe need to understand this word betterTo understand word we need to look at a derivate

Root of this word comes from word meaning REST, COMFORT,EASERAA HA- means rest, comfortTA RA WEEH- the break we take after 4 its called TARWWEHAMIR WA HA- fanREEH- refers to cool morning breeze, its nice, comfortingISTI raa ha- ROOH- it means go you’re annoying - be gone, give me peace, leave so I can be at peace

When soul is in body, the soul is relaxedWhen the soul leaves body its becomes STIFFROOH is the soul but here’s something interestingJIBRILL the angel is also been given the title of AR-ROOH, why? What did gibral bring down with him? The DIVINE revelation , wahi, from Allah, and that is what brings peace, comfort, and ease to the minds and hearts of the people. He is called ROOH

When ever the word rooh is being used in conjunction with the word malaakia, it is referring to JIBREIILSO WE KNOW ITS NOT TALKING ABOUT SOUL, ITS TALKING ABOUT JIBREALL

He is sacred, the Lord and master of the angels AND JIBRIAL. Why mention him separately? The Quran mentions him separately as well- because JIBREAL is SYMBOLIC of one of the GREATEST creations of Allah. When Prophet pbuh saw him, jibrael’s feet was all the way down into the earth, his head was into the heavensHe had 600 wings, when he opened one it covered the entire east, and when he opened the other it covered the entire west. How amazing he is, think how amazing HIS LORD is!

EXTENDED DHIKR IN RUKU (2)Top of page 14

SUBHANA- how amazing absolutely perfect Allah is

DHI- it means the possessor of, the one in possession ofAL JABROOT- this comes from root JABR which means to APPLY PRESSURE to something in order to CORRECT.It. to fix it. Look at derivatives

JABEERA- means SPLINT, or cast, when you break arm or leg, they put splint, because the point of the splint is to apply pressure to allow it to heal properlyFARASOON, JIBAAROON- when a horse runs, its running fast and STRICKING the earth very hard. Its doing it because its being told to do it, its needed in order to run quickly.TAJBEERUN AL A DHAAM- JA BA RIYA- a deviant sect, they believe everything is predestined, and that we cant do ANYthing. No point in even trying to be good! We are being FORCED into a directionTAJNEED ALJIBAARI – forced to enlist in army

JABAROOT- the one who has ability to apply pressure in order to CORRECT

WALMALAKOOT- the one who has COMPLETE ownershipsimilar to MAALIKMalik is the one who has OWNERSHIPThis idea of OWNERSHIP is a very important conceptThis answers a lot of those fundamental questionsWhat it implies isALLAH is MAALIK, he has complete ownershipWhat is our role? We are ABD, we are the slavesSlave means you are the PROPERTY of someone else, You are like a piece of furniture, possession, YOU ARE OWNED by someoneWhen you own something, Say my phone, I own, it, no matter what it isIf I smash my phone, no one can tell me I can’t do it. I can do what ever I want with itThat is our relationship with AllahWE ARE OWNED BY HIMHE CAN DO WITH US WHAT EVER HE WANTS, ANYTHING HE WANTSWhen you realize that, when that really sinks inIt changes your perspective on lifeYou then come to realize WE HAVE NO ROOM TO COMPLAIN, we are ownedWE NEED TO BE GRATEFUL, we aren’t entitled to anything , we have no rights, we cant demand anything BUT YET LOOK AT HOW MUCH HE GIVES US, HOW NICE HE HIS, HOW MERICFUL HE IS, HE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE SO MERCIFUL! YET HE IS

KIB RIYAA- means TO BE GREATAnother rule of thumb in Arabic language- “When you increase letters in a word, when you develop a word, you increase the MEANING of the word. If kabeer means greater than, KIBRiya means MANIFEST GREATNESS. Greatness that cannot be ignored, greatness that cannot be denied.

Statements by Bedouins/Arabic poets“In each and everything there is a miraculous sign that points you to the fact that Allah is one”Muslim BedouinWhats your evidence for believing in Allah?“he said look, the camel dropping tells you what? Doesn’t this tell you that Allah is there? Doesn’t this make you realize this?

HadithProphet pbuh was walking by and he saw a Bedouin man was supplicating duaThe Prophet stopped to listen to see what they learned (he was a student)Bedouin said “O you whose eye cant see you, mind cannot comprehend your greatness, people cannot praise you like you should be praised, the incidence that occurs does NOT change you, you are the initiator of change, You do not fear the tribulations of time, Allah knows the exact weight of the mountains of the worldAllah knows the exact value of the oceans of world, Allah knows the exacts drops of rain in the sky, leaves of trees in the world, ALLAH knows exact details of everything the day illuminates with light and the darkness.

One sky cannot hide another sky One ground cannot hide another ground from AllahA mountain in its deepest darkness cave cannot hide anything form AllahThe depth of the ocean cannot hide anything form Allah

OUR CONNECTION WITH THE PROPHET (SAW)We know OF the Prophet pbuh, but we haven’t fallen in LOVE with the prophet. We are not transferring the love of the prophet to our children. There is a growing problem about the STATUS of the Prophet pbuh! There is a main stream discussion- “Do we have to follow the sunnah?”, people treat it like an intellectual problem, its NOT it’s a spiritual problem, a problem of the heart.

If a person KNEW WHO THE PROPHET WAS, they would NEVER bring up this question. It’s a HUGE need to KNOW the Prophet (SAW) and TRANSFER THAT LOVE to our children

There are more attacks on the Prophet (Saw) then EVER in the history of ISLAM. You will find books upon books against the Prophet (saw), it wasn’t like this in the past, We have to point the fingers AT OURSELVES FIRSTWhat information have we shared with the world?WHAT DO WE KNOW, CAN WE TALK ABOUT HIM ? HIS LIFE? Do we have the knowledge and familiarity to talk about and represent the Prophet? No

The Prophet (saw) was carrying the body of his own son, Ibrahim, to burry himAnd people called him ABTAR (the one who has no legacy, nothing to continue)The reason Allah named the fountain kauthar,”…they say you have nothing, I SAY YOU HAVE A LOT”Think, how many people named Muhammad? Whenever we hear his name, we send salaam on him. Millions of people all over the world, send peace and blessings on him many times in the day

STORY OF AMMAR IBN YASER TAYIB- root is appealing, attractiveIt can manifest itself sometimes as something is beautiful, pure, good, all different uses for itWhen something is attractive or appealing it is tayibAllah uses it in conjunction with the word HALALHALALUN tayib – meaning “Allah commands us in the Quran to each that which is HALAL and TAYIB” meaning something can be halal but not really of good quality, not attractive, not appealing, not appropriate. Allah uses it when making TAYUMMum“tayamum saqqedan tayiban”Allah describes it as TAYIBAN, this is beautiful, its an act of obedience, ibaadah, devotion, dedication. If you were to describe to someone how we cut an animal, what would they say? Thats disgusting, blood flowing, but Allah describes this as tayib, all you have to do to understand how amazing this is by looking at how they kill animals in an unislamic way, in non halal plants

The Prophet (saw) used the word ISTiTAWBA- to describe cleaning yourself after using the restroomThe Prophet (saw) called it something beautifulThis is cleanliness

There was a companion called AMMAR IBN YAASIR- he was a young man who accepted islam in the early days of islam in Makkah. He wasn’t from a wealthy family. Mother and father were poor, no political influence or power. HE accepted Islam. In those day you had to sneak out to learn about Islam. You would sneak out at night and sneak back in before morning. To talk to Prophet (saw). Parents found out and thought he is mixed up with the wrong crowd. One night parents caught him red handed, WHAT ARE YOU DOING, you know we are not important people, If you get into trouble with the people, we cant get you out of that trouble.

He told his parents, No no, You are confused, I have not mixed up in anything bad, I have become Muslim

(for them that was EVEN WORSE!)

No you are misunderstood, and he tells his parents what the Prophet (saw) told him, imaan, morals. His parents were so effected, they accepted Islam.

It was only a short amount of time before mushrikoon got a hold of them. They would beat them and torture them. They thought oh these people are not influential, no one will careThey would time them to a pole, for days, people would abuse them

Abu jahal grabbed his mother and held a spear over herFather diedProphet (saw) told Ammar ibn Yasir to go to MadinaThe Prophet (saw) would walk by with tears

When you sacrifice, ALLAH guides to you to what is best.Ammar ibn Yaser went to Kooba and built a masjid

ALLUMA- O Allah

IGHFIRLEE- this is 3 different words1- Ighfir- comes from root GA FA RA, it’s root means to COVER SOMETHING. To DRAPE

SOMETHING, to COVER SOMETHING UP. That’s why in classical Arabic, MIGHFAR comes from the same root. Means HELMET. A helmet covers the head. It even comes in hadith.

GHAFEER- a HUGE crowd of people. Like aerial shot of hajj. Can you see the ground? No, All you see is people, they cover the ground. IGHFIR HOO LISOOWAT- GHA FA RA means to cover. We know its means forgiveness but it means a specific type of forgiveness. It means a type of forgiveness that also COVERS the sin. As IF IT NEVER HAPPENED, NOBODY SEES IT. AS IF IT NEVER HAPPENED. IT’S GONE! IGHFIRLEE,

FORGIVE ME (cover up my sins)

IRHAMNEE- COMES FROM root word mercyLEE-me

WAJBOORNI- JABR- to apply pressure, to correct, FIX ME!WE DON’T ASK FOR DIFFUCLTY BUT WHEN DIFFICULTY DOES COME UPON US its important to understand any limited amount of difficulty we deal with in this life is MUCHHHH better than the difficulty of the next life. That’s why people get difficulties in this lifeDifficulty is a BLESSING FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE, ITS A BLESSING, IT REMOVES OUR SINS, We shouldn’t whine and complain, we don’t ask for difficulty.

We ask for AAFINIAAFI- comes from afoo means TO OVERLOOK SOMETHING, TO DISREGARD SOMETHINGTo remove hardship, away from me, free me from difficulty, make it easy for me

WA RA ZOOKNIOorkook- comes from root word RIZQ, (means sustenance)Oorzook means GIVE SUSTANANCEPROVIDE FOR ME SUSTINANCE ME

WA RA FA’NICOMES FROM WORD RA FA ‘A which means to RAISE MERaise my status!WE HAVE AMBITION IN DUNYA, ITS IMPORTANT TO HAVE AMBITION IN DEEN!Not only make us righteous, make us THE LEADERS of the righteousMAKE US THE MOST PIOUS OF THE PIOUSTHE HIGHEST LEVELS OF JANNAHThis is not arrogance, wanting to be THE BEST OF THE BEST

WORD RIZQ IN QURANRIZQ- the word rizq in the Quran used in a very interesting wayINSERT QURANIC AYAHAllah tell usWAKHTILAFILAYLIWANAHAAR“And that which Allah has sent down, from the sky, “What does Allah send down from the sky? RAINFrom sustenance. , Allah substitutes word RIZQ for rain. Why?

Water initiates life,57

Day 3: Sunday

We did opening supplicationIsthiadahBasmalaFatihaRukuGetting up from rukuSujoodBetween sujood

Now we are going to talk about the SITTING portion of prayer

4.01 SITTINGTestimony of Faith

The FIRST thing I want to say isThe sitting portion of the prayer might just be some of the most POWERFUL things we can recite in our prayer. The tashahud is the most interesting thing we study in this classEach word has so many lessons embed within itThe sitting portion of the prayer is the CLIMAX of the prayer!!

58

Page 59: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Surah Fatiha lays down the coreWe recite part of the QuranSujood and sajdah requires humbleness and humilityWe acknowledge Allah has stability, and that He is the highestWe praise and glorify Allah in and between sujood, asking for His forgiveness and mercy

The sitting portion is the Climax, THIS IS WHERE YOU CASH INYou did worship NOW you ask for what you needNOW you make your final appeal

You did all this work, all this effortNOW we beg, we will plead, and we will ask Allah

The SECOND thing we need to talk about before we get into this

There are 3 places where there is a difference of opinionThe first place was the opening supplicationThis is SECOND place where there is difference of opinion

The THIRD point about tashahud isOpening supplications were TOTALLY different from each otherWe will study 5 tashahud, ALL taught to us by the Prophet (saw)The interesting thing is they are VERY SIMILIAR to each other

The first one is tashahud of IBN MASOODThen the next one was tashahud of IBN ABBASThen we will go to 3rd, 4th, and 5th tashahud and we will look at the differences between them

The FOURTH thing is that EACH TASHAHUD is narrated by the name of a sahabi. That’s why they are named after these people, because the person it is named after is the person the PROPHET (saw) HIMSELF TAUGHT to. And then that person passed it on.

We will learn an interesting fact/tidbit of each tashahud.

TASHHUD OF IBN MASOOD

Word analysisFirst wordATAHIYAATU: this word is a PLURAL word of the word TAHIYATOON (this is singular form)Along with being plural it is made PROPER by putting ALIF LAAM in front of itKITAABUN means a book, any bookAL KITAAB- is THE BOOK (it is the proper form)So it is plural (atihyaaaat)This comes from root word HAYAAT- means LIFEComes in Quran also Tahiya means TO GREET SOMEONE. Why does it come from root word of life? Before we said ASSLAM AALYKOOM

59

Page 60: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

They would say HAYAAKULLAH (it’s a supplication). That’s how pre-Islam people used to greet one another May Allah give you a long and prosperous life.Because they would be praying for life, the word for greeting came from word FOR LIFE.

This is something that happens in Arabic sometimes.. Over time the word spins off and becomes disconnected from root and takes on a meeting of its ownLike in English, when we say “that’s cool”, no one associates it with temperature- it’s a way to praise somethingNo one connects it back to hot and cold,“When you are greeted, respond with something better!”

TAHIYA means to greet someone.

LILLAHI- for Allah Letter Lam-forAllah-

THE GREETING ARE FOR ALLAH (that doesn’t make sense)We don’t greet Allah, Allah IS asslaam! There is story behind the meaning of this word

Abdullah ibn salih al ijliIts from the 2nd century of Islam, he says “I was curious about what this word means?”So I went on a journey to talk to different scholars to find what it means

I came to Imam Ashafie- there was something unique about himHe was A MASTER of the Arabic language. He was a poet. There is a collection of his poetry.I asked him what does it meanHe said “when you enter into the court of the king, what do you do? You compliment the king. You praise the king, like in englsih you say royal highness, your majesty, in Arabic they said “may you find peace, blessings”, or “you have removed curse from our lands, “may you live for 100 years. THAT’S WHAT ATTITYAAT MEANS

It means ROYAL COMPLIMENTS, COMPLIMENTS WORTHY OF A KINGWe are about to put our needs before Allah and we start with compliments sayingROYAL COMPLIMENTS ARE FOR ALLAH

WASALAHWAAT- plural fo salah. Prayers are for the sake of Allah

WATAYIBAAT: tayib means beautiful things, appealing things, they are also for ALLAH

Salahwaat refers to worship,Tayibaat refers to social conduct, We forget sincerity for social conductWhen you are nice to people you are doing it ALSO for Allah!

60

Page 61: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

If you are good to people because people are good to you, then you will be good to them as long as they are good to you, but what if the person is mean to you? Then that’s it, IKHLAAQ GONE?!But I AM DOING IT FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH

His teacher said what is the definition of ikhlaq? Its the heaviest on the scale on deeds,IKHALQ IS BEING GOOD TO PEOPLE EVEN IF THEY ARE BAD TO YOU”*And THAT’S what the Prophet (saw) had.

TAYIBAAT- our good conduct is for Allah alone

ASLAAMU- mean peace and safety

ALAYKA- ALAA- on top of , over, Nabi come from word NABAKhabr- means general newsNABA- means news that is important AND relevant to you

Nabi- comes with news that is IMPORTANT ANDDD RELEVANT TO YOU

nABI comes from word- NABWOON means if something is jutting out from surface, protruding from surface, like dome on ceiling, its all straight then dome, then becomes straight againWhy does word nabi come from word NABYOON? Because NABI STICKS OUT because he has been given divine revelation from Allah

WA RAHMATULLAHI- AND THE MERCY OF ALLAH

May the mercy of Allah also be upon youWABARAKATUHU- AND BARAKAH, (everlasting blessings of Allah)

And may His ever lasting blessing be upon you

WE ARE MAKING DUA FOR THE PROPHETTHIS IS ALLAH TEACHING US IN THE SALAH TO MAKE DUA FOR THE PORPHET! IT’S A DIRECT INSTRUCTION FROM ALLAH!

ASLAM ALAYK KA!KA means YOUYou are using it when talking TO someoneWhy are we speaking TO the Prophet (saw)? Why not HIM?Prophet (saw) is not here physicallySimply to understand whyIn the next narration, Ibn abbas narrates the next tashahud,He says the Prophet (saw) used to teach us tashshud JUST LIKE he would teach us a Surah from Quran

61

Page 62: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

What does that mean?1) In terms of importance, learning the tashhud is just as important as learning surahs from the

Quran2) Its verbatim, letter for letter. Can I change anything in the Quran? NO You cant change it! Its

exact. You cant say IYYAKANABUDA if you are singular. So even though the Prophet (saw) might not be there physically, we still say Aslamay KA

ASLAM ALAYNNAA- peace and safetyALAA- uponNA- usMay peace and safety be upon usWe are making dua FOR OURSLEVES

WA ALAA- AND UPON

IBAAD- this word is the plural of ABDThere are 2 plurals for the word abdIBAADABEEDBoth of them are used in the QuranBoth are plurals of the word ABDWhats the difference between them?

The word IBAAD can ONLY BE USED WHEN TALKING ABOUT the SLAVES OF ALLAH,Abeed is ALSO plural but it’s a GENERAL PLURAL

Lets say you are translating a research document and you are writing about slavery in general and you translate it in Arabic. You want to translate the word slave, you will NOT use IBAAD, you would use the word ABEED.

Wa alaa- and upon

ASALIHEEN- comes from the root word SALAH- salah means for something to be CORRECT, to be appropriate. The opposite means FASSAD (meaning corrupted)SALIHEEN are people who are correct and people that are good (righteous)

ASLAMAYNAA-may peace and safety be upon usWALAA- and uponSALIHEEN- the slaves of Allah that are RIGHTEOUS

The ASLAAYNA part- we are making dua for OURSELVESThe WA ALA IBADILAHISALHEEN- we are making dua for OTHERS

ORDER OF OUR DUASWho do we make dua for first? FOR OURSELVES FIRSST. We should not be selfish about our dua. Make sure to make dua for other people as well

62

Page 63: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

One time a Bedouin came into the majisid and said “May Allahs mercy be on you, on me and no one else”The Prophet (saw) said “You have taken something big and made it really small and put it into box”

We need to be SMART in our dua. We do make dua for other people but we need to make due for ourselves FIRST.

From the QuranINSERT QURANIC AYAH“Yayaldheena amanu kuu anfasumSave yourself and then your family, from the fire of Hell”This is a QURANIC instruction! On plane, oxygen masks comes down, FIRST PUT YOUR MASK ONPut your OWN mask on first, then you canhelp others

WE OURSELVES when giving dawah to others. WE NEED TO KNOW ALLAH MYSELF, before I can give that to others. In the tashahud, The Prophet (saw) is teaching usMake dua for other people but FIRST make dua for YOURSELF*

When we are making dua for other people, are we saying generally? or did we limit it? We LIMITED it. ASALIHEEN. We limit it with ASALIHEEEN!There is a lesson in this!

The salah is very motivational, it drives you! It gives you goalsIt tells us- If we incorporate the quality of RIGHTOUSNESS IN OURSELVES, WE ARE INCLUDED IN THE DUA OF EVERY SINGLE MUSLIM IN EVERY SALAH FROM THE TIME FO THE PROPHET! EVERY SINGLE MUSLIM WHO EVER PERFORMED SALAH, HE MAKES DUA FOR SALIHEEN, SO IF I QUALIFY IN BEING SALIHEEN, I AM INCLUDED IN THE DUA FO EVERY PERSON, WHAT AN AMZING DUA, TO BE INCLUDED IN THE DUA OF EVERY SINGLE PERSON ALL OVER THE WORLD THROUGH OUT TIME AND GENERATIONS I

WE CAN DO THAT, IF WE INCORPORATE THE QUALITY OF SALAH, RIGHTOUSNESS

ASH HADU ALLAH ILLAHA ILALLAHASHADU- it’s a VERB, a fi’l, it comes from root of word means I BEAR WITNESS, I BEAR TESTIMONYIt comes from root word SH HEE DA- to be a witness to somethingWhat other words comes from the same root?SHAHADAH- being witnessShaheed- is matyr

The root of the word means TO BE PRESENT,So why is a witness called ashaahid? Why is bearing witness coming from same word? Because the witness was PRESENT AT THE TIME of the situation Why is a shaheed comes form same root?

63

Page 64: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Because this person has presented himself for the ultimate sacrifice, scholars say when the shaheed falls in the battle field, angels are there

AN- its a sentence connector, you have 2 independent thoughts that connect them together

I was thinking, THAT I should eat somethingTHAT is a sentence connector

ASHHADU- I bear witness gives testimonyTHATLAA ILLAHAH- this is special LA, it means ABSOLOUTLY NOT! NO WAY NO HOW, ILAH- something or someone that is worshipedSO I BEAR WINTESS THAT THER IS ABSOLOUTLY POSITIVELY NO ONE WORTHY OF WORSHIP

ILA- except for

So you make a powerful statement then you want to make an exceptionALLAH- Allah

WA ASHHADU- And I bear witness , testimony

ANNA- this is also a sentence connector but it has something else! ANNA sounds stronger than AN. ANNA has emphasis. Not just that, it means MOST DEFINITELY. THAT!

MUHAMMADAN- Muhammad is

ABDU HU- his slave (Allahs slave)

WA RA SOOLUHU- and his RASOOL, his MESSENGER,

RASOOL- root word meaning SEND A MESSAGE FROM A HIGHER AUTHORITY, in classical Arabic. Not in modern Arabic. It just means to send message. When a KING was sending you a message, when some higher authority was sending a message. What higher authority is there other than Allah?

THE WORD NABI VS RASULThe prophet has been described with 2 different titles

1) NABI2) RASOOL

Whats the difference? The difference is usually an aqeedah related discussion

We will talk about it from a linguistic stand point by observing how the words are used in the Quran when talking about the Prophet (saw)

In the Quran NABI- means something that is bringing news that is relevant to the people or somehow is at a higher level and RASUL means he is bringing a message from Allah,

64

Page 65: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

NABI- relating to connecting to peopleRASUL- relating to connecting to Allah

When the prophet is described about talking to people he is described as NABIWhen in the Quran talk about Prophet (saw) to connect to Allah then the word RASUL is used

Example, in surah TAHREEM , Allah talks about interaction of Prophet with his familySo Allah opens by saying “YA AYU HANNABIYU , used the word nabi!Discussion between prophet and his wives, Allah address even the wives as YANISSAN NABI (o women of nabi! NOT rasul, because we are talking about human interaction. When Allah is talking about INTERACTION relating to people, Allah calls NABI

But when Allah it telling the Prophet, I HAVE SENT YOU A MISSION, I HAVE GIVEN YOU TASK I WILL HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE, Allah uses “YA AYUHARRASUL… “Deliver that which your Lord has revealed to you”When Allah is holding him accountable, he used the word RASUL!

When he is told to proclaim to the people he is mentioned as NABI Look at how precise the Quran is, in the ayah:“i have been sent from allah to deliver message to the people uses rasul”, BECAUSE HE IS CONNCEITNG IT TO ALLAH!

THE AUTHORITY OF THE PROPHET IS BASED ON THE AUTHORITY OF ALLAH

Root word is RA SEEN LAAM( means to deliver message)

ASHHADU ANFirst its ash hadu “AN”Second is ash hadu “ANNNNNA”Lighter one (first one) used when talking about ALLAHAnd heaver one used for prophethood

The real answer is THERE IS BALANCE, BOTH statements are being emphasized, even though “an” is light, what comes after? LA that is a special LA, it packs a punch ABSOLOUTLY NO, no way no how, it already has emphasis, no need for reemphasis

Second statement has no emphasis, so ANNNNA was used

Tidbit about this narration There are certain hadith, that are passed on ,Passed on teacher to studentAll the way to the Prophet (saw), SOME AHADITH not only words transfer, but EVEN THE ACT associated with words also transfer!

Tashud of ibn masood, in this narrationOne day the prophet walked up to me, put his arm around my shoulder and said lets go for walk with his arm around my shoulder,

65

Page 66: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Let me teach you somethingArm around shoulderSo Abdullah ibn masood later in lifeON conveying to his favorite student IBANRHI an nakhiPUT HIS hands around his shoulder and taught him tashsahudEven though he already knew it! HAMAAD AS SALMIAIN another favorite student

Then he had his best studentt was ABU HANIFA, lets go for a walk…So literally this tradition has been passed on. When teacher passes on this tradition, PASSES IT ON BY EMULATING THE ACT ITSELF!!!!!!

That’s how we emulate the life of Prophet 9saw), OUR teacher even did thisTHIS IS THE SOMETIHNG UNIQUE ABOUT THIS TASHAHUD

(There are also other tashahud that are similar but have some minor differences. These are skipped)Tashahhud of Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, Abu Musa, Umar Ibn al-Khattab

IMPORTANCE OF IKHALAQQ One of the other tashahud emphasized ikhlaq. One very common problem is that you find someone who is very regular about salah, about Quran, about his dhikr, bu this person is someone who everyone hates. He is the meanest uncle or aunty in the masjidOr you have a guy who prays 5 times a day, but you would never want to do bussiness with him, the guy will take the shirt from your back if he could (and unfairly deal with you) Or someone in the family whose salah and Quran are good, but ikhlaaq is HORRIBLE , only things coming out of mouth are negative and criticizing. One thing shaytaan does is he CREATES A SEPERATION, salah is one thing, and business is another thingTHE QURAN NEVER CREATED A SEPERATION, he showed us that these two things are LINKED! If you continue to pray 5 times a day and you continue to lie, to backbite, that means THERE IS A DEFICIENCY IN YOUR SALAH! MUNKAR does NOT mean sins, (dhunobb means sins) it means to behave inappropriately in your SOCIAL CONDUCT, QURAN says your SALAH WILL STOP YOU FROM BEHAVING INAPPROPRIATELY IN YOUR SCHOOL, WORK, SOCIETY. If they are not doing that, they have a problem with their salah!

The Prophet (saw) told us” do not let your ihklaaq get left behind”

The Prophet told us “THE PERSON THAT WILL BE BANKCRUPT ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, HE WILL COME WITH MOUNTAINS OF GOOD DEEDS, HAS A LOT OF GOOOD DEEDS, BUT HE HAD A LONGGG LIST OF COMPLAINTS AGAINST HIM, HE HURT THAT GUY, HE CURSED THAT ONE, WHAT IS GIVEN BACK TO THEM? ALL HIS HASSANAT!

Recommended to listen to a lecture: there is an amazing recording about the Final Khutbah of the Messenger of Allah (saw)

ALL OF THESE PEOPLE NARRATING TASHHUD WENT TO THE SAME MASJIDFather and son would have different tashahud!!! Unbelievable, we NEED TO LEARN TOLERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITIES

66

WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW VAST THE SUNNAH ISTHE PROPHET (SAW) TOLD US DIFFERENT THINGS IN DIFFERENT WAYSITS FROM THE WISDOM OF THE PROPHET (SAW)

You are no one to make this a big deal. Look at the sahabah, they all read different tashahud, but didn’t make it an issue out of it.

4.02 SALTUATIONS ON THE PROHET (PBUH)Loving the Prophet pbuh, and knowing the Prophet begins by saying his name properly (recitation exercise)

One of the greatest tragedies of today is we know OF the Prophet pbuh but we haven’t fallen in LOVE with the Prophet pbuh. There are youth, who think it might not even be true! To the extreme that its all fairy tale and “made up”, subhanAllah!

The Prophet pbuh was an INDIVIDUAL, who lived for OTHER peopleHe was the type of person who bled, cried, sacrificed an unbelievable amount for the sake of humanityHis heart would literally bleed for humanityIf you read his life, the way he lived, you will be amazed.

There is a book that describes the Prophet saw, their main passage that is always in my headDAA I MAN FIKRAH- he was constantly concernedConstantly grievedHe was grieving constantly over the condition of the peopleHe NEVER had a moment of rest! The Prophet himself tells us that “I have been threatened for the deen of Allah like no one else has be threatened, and I have been tortured and pained like no on else”“30 consecutive days and nights passed that myself and bilal had nothing to eat except little, except what he could hide in his clothes

Fatima once had fresh bread with herThe Prophet pbuh says “what’s the special occasion”?The prophet sat down , said bismillah,Took bite of breadThanked Allah and saidI swear by the one whose in His hand holds my life“This is the first morsel of food your father has eaten in 3 days”He would stay awake, he couldn’t sleep out of concern for the people! He expressed his concern for humanity

“My analogy is like a man who starts fire, where insects and bugs start to come and fall into the fire, that is YOUR example. I am trying to stop them from falling in the fire, I am trying to stop you, grabbing on to your backs, pulling you, however you are slipping through my fingers, slipping out of my hands”

This was his burning desire, the wellbeing of humanity

Current situations, the militant rhetoricWe haven’t studied the life of Prophet, and WE HAVENT PRESENTED him properly!

Story of TUFAYL; He accepted islamProphet told him go back to your area and guide them to islamHe came backTribe of DOWS isn’t accepting , and he asked dua to destroy themProphet raised his hands (sahabah said theyre done for…)“O Allah guide the people o Dows”And he told Tufayl Now go backYEASR LATER, literally 20 years laterTUFAYL arrive back to medina with his ENTIRE TRIBE ready to accept Islam!

HAWAADHIN and THAQEEFThe muslim army was being attacked by the arrows, The battle is going on and onThey went to the Prophet pbuh “oh messenger of Allah, the arrows of thaqeef are burning holes in us!, they’re killing usYou are the messenger of Allah, make dua that Allah destroy these peopleProphet raised his hand and said “O Allah give hadyaya to the people of thaqeef”

NOT ONLY IN THIS LIFE, but ever next life HE WILL NOT FORGET US! He will not stop worrying about usProphet said LOOK FOR ME AT THESE 3 PLACESAT THE BRIDGE OF SIRAAT, I will help youWhen the deeds are being weighed, I will help youAt the fountain of kauhthar, I will give you water to drink with my own hands

The Prophet will INTERCEDE ON PEOPLES BEHALFHE LOVEED EVERYONE…even the most sinful of the ummah

What have we done, how we REPSONDED to this love? What have we done in return?

WHAT CAN WE DO?STUDY THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET,LIVE BY THE MORALS AND THE CHOICES OF THE PROPHETCARRY YOURSELF HOW HE CARRIED HIMSELFTALK LIKE HE WOULD TALKTREAT YOUR FAMILIES LIKE HE WOULD TREAT HIS FAMILIES Send blessing upon him

ALLAHUMA- YA ALLAHSALI- comes from root word SALAH- when Allah is the doer of the action of Salah what does that mean? Means to send special mercy and blessings,, O ALLAH SEND YOUR SPECIAL BLESSINGS

ALA- UPON, 68

MUHAMMAD-

Lets understand the etymology of the name of the Prophet pbuhThis comes from root word HAMD, Muhammad is a specific form of the word which implies SOMETHING TO HAPPEN OVER AND OVER AGAINMuhammad is the one who is praised over and over again,One who is praised repeatedly, Because all over the world, he is praised

The Prophet pbuh said the STINGINESS of my ummah is one who doesn’t even say salaam, cant give that much upon me

Ibn Kathir talks about how the Prophet was not the first person who was named muhammad. While the prophet was not the first person named muhammad, it was a RARE nameLike Abdurehman is common, Abdul Baqi is rareSo if you come across an Abdul baqi, you would say hmm, that’s interestingMuhmmad was a RARE name

How any places does the name Muhammad come in the Quran?1- Surah Al Imran- “wa muhammadan ilaa rasul”2- Surah Ahzaab3- Surah Muhammad4- A place is Surah FATH (after surah Muhammad)

AHMAD is another name given to the ProphetAHMAD comes from the root word HAMD, same root,Ahmad means the ONE who praises more than others (praising Allah)Occurs in Surah Saff

Observation in the QuranAll these places where the name of Prophet pbuh occurs and Allah is speaking ABOUT, everytime Allah talks TO Muhamamd, Allah talks to him with TITLES, YA AYUALMUDASIR, YA AYUHAL MUZZAMIL, NOT only that but even when Allah mentions RASOOL when talking about him. The lesson is, “we don’t talk about the Prophet pbuh like we speak about each other,” We shouldn’t say “Muhammad said”NoSay “The messenger of Allah said”EVEN THE FAMILY CALLED HIM “O MESSENGER OF ALLAH”TALK ABOUT HIM WITH TITLESSay the Prophet Muhammad,The messenger Muhammad

O ALLAH SEND YOUR SPECIAL BLESSINGS ON MUHAMMADWA ALLA- AND UPON

KAMAA- draws a parallel, with Prophet Muhammad and IbhrahimWhat is the connection? The Prophet was the ANSWER TO THE SUPPLICATION OF IBRAHIMAFTER BUILDING THE KABAH, HE SAID INSERT QURANIC AYAH“RABAB WAB US FEEHI RASOOLAM”

The Prophet is a UNIVERSAL messengerr, so Allah is creating an association in the minds of people with the Prophet and ibrahim. Because ibrahim is a UNIVERSALLY accepted messengerDo jews and chirstions accept MUSA? YesDo the jews accept isa? NoMushrikoon accept musa? NoDid they believe in Ibrahim? YES!

EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE MUSHRIKOON, they still held the figure of Prophet Ibrahim in reverence. They said the follow the religion of IbrahimAllah creates an association that just like everyone accepts Prophet IbrahimThey need to accept Prophet Muhammad (saw) as well

Why is it called tashahud?TASHAH HUDSOUND LIKE ASHHADUTashahud COMES FROM root word to bear witness, to bear testimony toAll of it, why is that entire thing called tashahud? The principle of eloquence in Arabic language, when you are talking about WHOLE. You refer to WHOLE by mentioning PART and when you do that , its because that part is The most important part of the whole! We call that ENTIRE supplication the tashahud because the most important part is tashahud! Everything leads up to that, everything builds up to that.

REMEMBER, sitting portion of prayer is when you hit jackpotThe sitting portion of prayer, The ruku The sujud

What is unique about what you say in sitting portion?THE SITTING portion of prayer TEACHES US ETTIQUES of supplication to Allah and what we say in that position is very important

1. We START BY PRAISING and GLORYGING ALLAH2. Then send SALAAM for the Prophet pbuh3. NOW WE WILL ASK FOR SOMETHING

This is the etiquettes for making dua!! This sitting portion teaches us proper way of making a supplication

WATAQABAL DUA- comes from root word QABL, meaning IN FRONTQablahu- before itIstiqbal- to receive or welcome someone, because you face themTabqbeel- to kiss, you face something when you kiss itWa taqbal- face off, completionLOVINGLY ACCEPT is what it meansIt uses the word TO FACE SOMETHING is where love comes fromIf you brought something, and I don’t even look at you and say “k, leave it on the table” what type of impression would you have, what is my relationship with you and what you are giving? What if I take it facing you?

MY LORD, MY MASTERLOVINGLY ACCEPT MY SUPPLICATION!Because supplication started individually!

RABANA- our Lord!IGFIRLEE- to COVER , to delete, to remove, to buryFORGIVE ME!

WALI WAALIDAYA-4 WORDSWa- andli-forwaaliday-parentsya-my

AND FOR MY PARENTSForgive me AND FORGIVE MY PARENTS

Why did it go back from collective to singular?Because Quranic language is very precise.WE ARE ASKING FORGIVENESS FOR SINS, is there such a thing as collective sins? No its individual, WHEN WE ASK FOR FORGIVENESS IT SHIFTS BACK TO INDIVIDUALWHEN WE ASK FOR PARENTS,DO WE ALL HAVE SAME PARENTS? NO IT SHIFTS BACK TO INDIVIDUAL!

WORDS USED FOR OUR PARENTSThere are 2 words Walidaan/waalidaynAbawaan/abiwaynBoth words mean parentsThere is a rhetorical function in classical arabicIf there are 2 separate words that are constantly mentioned together over and over again, all the time, like sun and moon, sun and moon, sun and moon, etc. It beings to get tedious, so what you do is you take ONE of the words, what ever is easier to work with and you put it into the DUAL form, the PAIR form, like QAMR, so it would be QAMRAIN looks like 2 moons, but it really means SUN AND MOON

Another example:73

Page 74: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

AbuBakr and Umar, you talk about them a lot, you constantly talk about them together, So you can do something You can take the one easier to work with sayUMAR is short, and you put it into its dual formAnd you sayUmraan (MEANS 2 umars) – it doesn’t mean 2 Umars but it really means AbuBakr and UmarWhen you read umraan you know it talks about Abu bakr as well.

HASAN and HUSAYN, if you say that a lot its gets difficult so you take one that is easier to work withAnd say HASNAAyn – it really means hasan AND husayinTHIS IS THE FUNCTION OF language

SIMILAIRY for parents, You have abawaan, Abba-dadUmmi-mom

Over and over again, ab um ab umSo you take abAnd make into dual form You get ABAWAAN (two dads) Looks like 2 fathers but really it means FATHER AND MOTHER.

Walidaan/walidaynComes from root word WA LA DA means to give birth. Who gives birth? MOTHERShe is called WAAALIDAH, Father is called waalid by extension

Instead of constantly saying waalid, waalidah over and over again You can make its dual form which is waalidayn(father and mother)

ABA WAAN points MORE towards the dadWaalidayn points more towards the mom (Because root of word birth)

IN THE QURAN, ALLAH TELLS US TO BE GOOD TO OUR PARENTSTO HONOR OUR PARENTSTO MAKE DUA FOR OUR PARENTSWHICH word does Allah use? WAALDAYN! Saying be good to your parents and be little more good to your MOTHER

And when Allah talks about inheritance, Allah used the ABAWAYN! When taking about financial responsibly, Allah uses the word ABAWAYN

When he talks about forgiveness and kindness , and mercy, Allah uses the word walidayn

ALLAH STARTS SURAH…(get which surah it is)74

In the middle, Allah talks about mother carrying child, difficulty over difficulty, then delivering the childAfter born its not over, the hardship continues. It clings to the motherThe child is stuck to the mother for at least 2 yearsCannot clean itself, Cannot feed itselfAllah mentions the age

When our mothers gave THE MOST for us, went through the hardest time- we don’t remember!!!We don’t remember when we were bornWe don’t remember our InfancyWhen our mother would literally LIVE FORRR USEatSleepTHIER ENTIRE LIVES REVOLVED AROUND USWE DON’T REMEMBER THAT!

As we get older our needs get more and more attached to our fathers First time you need cell phone, who do you ask? FatherFirst time you want to drive, get a laptop, etc who do you ask? FatherThen we are very grateful to our dadsBUT ALL THAT OUR MOTHER’S GAVE US WE DON’T REMEMBERAND because of their loving nature, WE MORE EASILY TAKE OUR MOTHERS FOR GRANTED

SubhanAllah, mothers are strangest of creation ,there is no logic in being a mother.

You can be bad, rude, mean,DisrespectfulShe could be yelling at you but she will still be cooking your foodThey have that undying loveThey cant help but care

Parents say a lot to their kids ”when you have children you will realize”ITS ABOSIULTY TRUEWHEN YOU HAVE KIDS you realize

For sisters when you have kids you realize and appreciate mother much moreBrothers you will look at your wife and how dedicated and devoted she is to your child, and you’ll realize MY MOTHER DID THIS FOR ME AS WELL

When my older daughter was a year old, she got sick, and my wife was sick at the same time, I said don’t worry I will take care of her, you go restShe said NO, I will take care of her When you realize, subhanAllah THIS IS HOW DEDICATED OUR MOTHER WAS

Lets talk about the word mumin (mumineena is plural)Comes from root of IMAAN, comes from root A-MAN (means security, feel safe and secure, feel peace, safety)

Imaan comes from IMAAN as root meaning for believingBECAUSE WHEN WE PUT OUR IMAAN IN ALLAH WE GET A SENSE OF SECURITY

This is important to tell youth, there is a lot of DISPARIGING of religion, they say religion is for weak minded people, they say you are TRAPPED in the religion, its a jail, its a psychological prison, IMAAN FREES YOU, imaan makes your life so much better and lifts so many worries and burdens.

You realize NOT EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON ME!I PUT MY IMAAN IN ALLAH, NOW I LIVE A WORRY FREE LIFE, ALL I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IS WHATMAKE ALLAH HAPPY, I JUST DO WHAT EVER MY LORD TELLS ME TO. That’s it

MUMIN is one who believes, HE HAS ATTAINED A SENSE OF SECURITY BY PUTTING HIS FAITH AND TRUST IN ALLAH

YAWMA- the day ofYAKOOM- it will be ESTBALISHED, AL HISAAB- means accountability

It is different from counting Hisaab means TO VERY ACCURATELY AND PRECISELY COUNT EVERYTHING

SUPPLICATION 3PAGE 22.ONE OF MY FAVORITE SUPPLICATIONS

ALLAHUMA- O ALLAH

INNI- MOST DEFINETLY !DHALAMTU- ROOT IS dhulm (oppression) root of the word means in Arabic TO PUT SOMETHING WHERE IT DOESN’T BELONG, to MISAPPROPRIATE is dhulmAllah says shirkh is DHULM ADHEEM because you misappropriate Allah’s right to be worshiped and you give it to someone else

Oppression is misappropriating the rights of peopleCommitting sins is also dhulm BECAUSE YOU ARE misappropriating time, energy, intelligence and so many blessings that you were given by Allah TO SERVE ALLAH.

DHALAMTU- I HAVE WRONGED (past tense) significant because past tense CONFIRMS IT!THIS PERSON IS CONFIRMING IT

You know someone does something wrong and they say “its possible it was my fault” he is not really accepting it, he is talking around it

76

And its another thing to say “I WAS WRONG”Dhalamtu I HAVE DONE WRONG, CONFIRMED FACT

Who have I done it against?NAFSEE- MYSELFI HAVE WRONGED MESELF

DHULMAN KATHEERAN!We hard this in hamdan katheera… AN AN ANIts an exclamation mark! Its creating that exclamation

DHULMAN- reemphasizing wrongI HAVE DONE WRONG TO MYSELF HORRIBLE THINGS!KATHEERAN- I HAVE DONE HORRIBLE THINGS, AND LOTS AND LOTS OF THEM

LISTEN TO THE GUILT BEING EXPRESSED IN THE STATEMENTTHIS PERSON IS SAYING I AM A BAD PERSON, NO BEETING AROUND THE BUSH, I HAVE DONE WRONG, I AM NOT EVEN GOING TO TRY TO DENY ITHE IS ACCEPTING HE IS A CRIMINAL IN FRONT OF ALLAH

WA LAA YAGHFI (normal La)GHAFARA- AND NO ONE CAN FORGIVE

ADHUNOOB- MEANS sinsIT’S THE PLURALDHAMB is singularDHAMB means sinBut when noon and ba come together, you pronounce NOON like MEEMThis word comes from same root as THANAB (tail)

The word for sin comes from same word as tail of animalWhats the connection with sins and tail?WHEN EVER THE CAT RUNS THE TAIL FOLLOWS IT ALONGTail followsIt’s visual tool of the language! Arabic language is very visualImagery built into these words

IMAGINE, JUST LIKE THE CAT RUNS THE TAIL RUNS BEHIND ITTHE PSYCOLOGY OF HUMAN BEING IS SUCH SHAYTAAN tells humans you commit sin and you LEFT sin behindThe WORD FOR SIN REMIND US, THE SIN WASN’T LEFT IN THE ROOM IT WAS COMMITTED, IT IS FOLLWING YOU WHERE EVER YOU GO!

WHATS THE ONLY WAY TO GET RID OF THIS TAIL? TOWBA AND ISTAGHFAR, AND THIS TOWABA AND ISTIGHFAR ALSO FOLLOWS YOU!!!! LIKE A TAIL

WALAAYAGHFIRUDHUNUBAAND NO ONE CAN FORGIVE EXCEPT FOR YOU!

Listen to this statement

We have said, I have messed up a lot, KATHEERANAnd then we are saying NO one CAN FORGIVE SINS EXCEPT YOU

You know a friend comes to you late at night, you ask if everything is alright, and the first thing he starts of with is “there is no one else I can go to other than you…” why is he stating off with those words. He is showing you desperation, he is saying NO is NOT an option here! Don’t turn me away, He begins with that.

We begin by saying THERE IS NO ONE WHO CAN FORGIVE SINS EXCEPT YOUITS THAT DESPERAIONTHE HELPLESSNESS!

FAGRIFEE- Fa- so, thereforeIGHFIRLEE- forgive me

MAGHFRBTANThe AN is thereCOMPLETEEEEE FORGIVENESSWIPE MY SLATE CLEAN!

MIN- fromENDA- near or behalfKA- your

FROM YOUR BEHALF, from near you doesn’t make sense,

There are EXPRESSIONS, figures of speech and to assume you can word for word dissect and get understanding is a huge misconception

MIN ENDEK MEANSvAS A FAVOR FROM YOU

COMPLETY FORGIVE ME, WIPE MY SLATE CLEAN, AS A FAVOR FROM YOU!Even in this is a lessonI CANNOT DEMAND THIS FORGIVEBESS, I AM NOT DESERVING OF IT, BUT I AM BEGGING, I AM PLEADING, DO IT AS FAVOR FROM YOU

WARHAMNI- have mercy on me

INNA- MOST CERTAINLY, DEFINITLY, KA- YOUANTA- you

The word “you” repeated twice? Its an effect, when you learn balagha, rhetotric, when you CREATE THIS COMBINATION, WHEN YOU REPEAT PRONOUNS you create the MEANING OF EXCLUSIVITY

MOST DEFINITELY YOU AND ONLY YOU!GHAFOOR MEANS CONSTANTLY FORGIVEMOST DEFINITELY YOU AND ONLY YOU CAN CONSTANTLY FORGIVE

Why constantly? We already establishED I MAKE A LOT OFVMISTAKES,THAT I DO IT ABUNDANTLYO ALLAH pleasE forgive me constantly

RAHEEM- CONSTANTLY MERCIFUL

You see a correlation of forgiveness and mercy, there is a connection!

O ALLAH MOST DEFINITELY I HAVE WRONGED MY SELF IN A HORRIBLE WAY OVER AND OVER AGAIN THERE IS NO ONE ESLE I CAN GO TO FOR FORGIVENESS OTHER THAN YOU O ALLAH I BEG YOU, I PLEAD YOU, WIPE MY SLATE CLEAN BECAUSE ONLY YOU AND ONLY YOU CAN CONSTANTLY FORIGIVE AND CONSTANTLY GIVE MERCY

Here comes the catch, mind-blowing point,Prophet taught this to WHO? ABU BAKR!! THE BEST OF THE BEST!Prophet told himYOUUUUUUU READ THIS SUPPLICATION EVERYR TIME YOU PRAYIF HEEEEE NEEDED THE SUPPLICATION, WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU AND I STAND??????!4.04 TASLIMSaying salaam is just a method for existing prayer

4.05 SUPPLICATION AND REMEMBRANCE AFTER TASLIMPG23DUAS THAT CAN BE READ AFTER SALAHSome things the Prophet pbuh taught us specific things to do after prayer

ASTAGHFIROO I seek Forgiveness

WE JUST FINISHED AN ACT FO OBEDIENCE, AT THE END WE SAY I SEEK FORGIVENESS!!WHY?Because of the MISTAKES we made in salahThis is an important lesson on HOW we worshipAfterwards we don’t feel like we have done a lot!YOU NEED TO BE HUMBLE, How you SHOULD HAVE prayed and how you actually prayed are world apart, as Allah to accept what ever you could do and forgive the mistakes and shortcomings.

ALLAHUM ANTASALAAMU WAMINKASALAAMU

ALLHUMA- O ALLAHANTA- YOUASALAAM- the root of this word SEEN LAAM MEEM SA LI MA, it means to BE SAFE, or to be at PEACE, from this we have greeting that we give to each other, An ATTRIBUTE of Allah is ASSALAM- THE ONE WHO IS THE GRANTER OF PEACE AND SAFETY, THE ONE WHO GIVES AND GRANTS

ISLAM and MUSLIMSISLAM- means to submit, Muslim is one who submitsHow does submit come from peace and safety? BECAUSE THE ONLY WAY TO ATTAIN PEACE AND SAFETY IS TO SUBMIT TO ALLAH. THAT’S HOW WE GET TRUE PEACE and TRUE SAFETY

The Prophet pbuh would send letters to kings and other leaders and includeAS-LIM TASLA(submit, you will become safe)SOOLUM- mean stairsWhat do stairs or ladders have to do with safety? The classical arabs would sometimes names things based on how they felt about them, they felt words were powerful, if we gave certain names, they would have effects on them. Around ladders/stairs, people can fall, people can get hurt so they want people to be careful around ladders/stairs.So when they looked at stairs or ladders, they named it as SAFETY, every time you say it , it comes from safety so it reminded person going up and down stairs to CONSTANTLY be safe

O ALLA YOU ARE THE GRANTOR OF PEACE AND SAFETY

WA-MIN KAAND FROM YOU

IS ASSLAAAM (PEACE N SAFETY)

TABAARAKTA- comes from baraqaho it’s a VERB, it means MOST BLESSED ARE YOU!

WA NUMINuka COMES FROM IMAAN, we believeWe believe in

BI KA- IN YOUBa is used to be more firmly WE FIRMLY BELIEVEIN YOU

WA NA TA WAKALU- comes from root wa ka la which literally means TO LEAN ON SOMETHING, (wa kaltu) FROM THAT COMES WORD wakeel (YOU LEAN ON HIM TO REPESENT YOU AND SPEAK ON HIS BEHALFTAWAKUL – comes from same rootIt’s a form of word that implies STRUGGLE,WE STRUGGLE TO RELY ON YOUTO LEAN ON YOUMeaning its not just a one shot thing, its something people struggle with. We keep on trying

ALAYKA- UPON YOUWhen you lean on something, you put YOUR WHOLE WEIGHT ON IT, it releives you!You throw all your weight on wall, you don’t want chairIt relaxes youIt relives youWE PUT OUR TRUST COMPLETLY ON ALLAH!! Its meant to relax you, to make your life simpler

WA NUSTHNEE- root word is THANAA- means to stack, to foldWE STACK, we fold, we ATTRIBUTE, WE COMPLETY DEDICATE and acknowledge

ALAYKA- upon youWE ARE STACKING

ALKHAIR- THAT WHICH IS GOOD (general word for good)ALL GOOD! WE ATTRIBUTE TO YOU, WE ACKNOWLEDGE ALL GOOD COMES FROM ALLAH, WE STACK IT ON TO HIM, WE ATTRIBUTE IT TO HIM,

THE WORD KHAYRThe word KHAYR in interestingIt’s the opposite of SHAR In its origin, even the sound of it KHAYR is when things are consolidated, organizedShar is when things are spread outIf you walk into room and there are papers all over the place, across the room, it bothers you!You see papers EVERYWHERE it will bother you,

Imagine all those papers are neatly stacked and folded all into the middle of the room on the table, its ORGANIZATION, CLEANLINESS, its appealing, KHAYR means something is organized, good

SHAR is spread out, its disorganized, no organization.83

WA NASHKURUKA- Nashkuruka comes from root word SHUKR which means to be grateful, thankful, WE ARE GRATEFUL TO YOU, TO ALLAH,

WA LAA NAKFURUKA comes from root word KUFR KUFR in its origin refers to sowing a seed,The process of farming, they turn soil, put seeds in groundKUFR MEANS TO PUSH SOMETHING UNDER, PUSH SOMETHING INSIDE (like seed)You stuffed it under, That’s what kufr means

Then in terms of gratefulness, it means UNGRATEFULFarmer is called kaafir, even Quran used it in that tone

Because what are we supposed to do with blessing? We are supposed to say ALHUMDULLILAH. When someone is ungrateful they are HIDING THE BLESSING OF ALLAH and not acknowledging that favor bestowed upon them

In faith and imaan, it means to disbelieve, he is suppressing and hiding his true nature (fitrah)

WALAANASHKURKAWALAA NAKFURUKA- WE WILL NOT BE UNGRATEFUL TO YOU (NORAML LA)

WA NAKHLAOO- KH LA a’ mean to remove something that is attached to youWhen Prophet Musa walked into the valley fakhlaa (remove your shoes) was usedWE DETACH, WE REMOVE

SOMEONE IS WINNING, THERE CANNOT BE TWO LOSERS, SOMEONE IS GETTING THE UPPER HAND!IF YOU ARE NOT RUBBING OFF ON THEM, IF YOU HAVE BEEN HANGING OUT WITH THEM THEN REALIZE THEY ARE RUBBING OFF ON YOU! WE WILL DETACH OURSELVES, AND REMOVE OURSELVES FROM PEOPLE THAT WILL VERY OPENLY, just don’t care, very intentionally sinAlmost like they are BRAGGING, with them we keep a distance from them!

Teacher is imam, people bring problems to you, so you learn certain thingsParents are very concerned about their youth, about the company they keep but problem is THEY are not willing to watch their own company! So we will have free mixing parties and the second I see my son talking to girl, it’s the end of the world. My children better not even think about it!...What about me?

WA QI KNEE- PROTECT MESHARA- FROM THE EVEIL OFMA- THAT WHICHQADAYTA- means that which you have decreedPROTECT ME FROM THE EVIL THAT YOU HAVE DECREED

QADHA is root word, means TO DECIDE SOMETHING, but you have the ability to ENFORCE that decisionThat’s why QAADHI- is judge, he not only has ability to make decision but also has power to ENFORCE that decision!DECREE

FA INNAKA- because MOST CERTAINLY YOUUTAAQDEE- decreeYOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN DECREE ANYTHING

WALAA YUQDAA- this is passive, And it cannot be decreed UPON YOUYOU ARE THE ONE THAT MAKES DECISIONS,NO ONE CAN DECIDE ANYTIHNG UPON YOU

INNNAHUU- MOST CERTAINLY HEHE IS HYPOTHETICAL PERSONLA YADHILUU- DHILLA means HELPLESSAllah says to sahabah” we helped you in place of badr” Dhaleel , they were helpless, no armor, no food,

INNAHU LAYADHILMOST DEFINITELY THAT PERSON DOES NOT FEEL HELPLESS MAN- THE ONE WHOWAA LAYTA- WHOM YOU HAVE BEFREINDED

TABAARAKTA- you are most blessed ya Allah

WA TALAYTA- YOU ARE most EXALTED, most HIGH O LORD!

A FEW LESSONSDo you notice this reoccurring thing?ALLHUM FEE MANFEE MAN FEE MAN

What is this fee man?why not just say almhudani, wa fanee, watalytanee, why “amongst those who”?amongst those who?

Don’t just guide me, but PUT ME IN A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHOM YOU HAVE GUIDED

if you are sitting with bunch o friends, say you forget salah, someone is going to say its time for salahIt strengthens you!

Good company is VERY IMPORTANT!Protects youCreates a safe layer around you!

HADAYTAA!those whom you have guided in the pastThose whom you have made wali In the pastWhy emphasis on the past??

THE BEST ROLE MODELS ,ARE THE ONES IN THE PAST, its GUARUNTEED.If someone was alive right now, you don’t know how it will end for him No guarantee in present

The best are the Prophet and companions of his timeHistory is very important!WE NEED GOOD STRONG POSITIVE ROLE MODELS FROM THE PAST

WA BAARIK LEE FEE MAN AATAY TAAnd bless me IN THAT which you have already given me in the past

This is importantWe pray for BARAKAAHThis supplication teaches us about baraqahBARAQAH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH QUANTITYITS ALL ABOUT QUALITY!!

Barawaq doesnt mean you get more money, but baraqah means you can do MORE with lessO Allah add in what I already have! Just add baraqah and I am good to go!

6.02 STUDY OF CONCLUDING AYAT OF SURAH ALBAQARAH 2:284-286Pg.29LAST AYAHS OF SURAH BAQARAHReferring back to the Hadith of the 2 gifts to the Prophet pbuh“NOTHING like it has ever been given before! Any ummah from the past”Ayah 284,285,286

Realize these are VERY powerful ayahs

FIRST AYAHLILLAHI MAAFISAMAAWAATI WA MAA FIL ARD - LILAHI – ONLY FOR ALLAH (out of sequence)EVERYTHING IN THE HEAVENSAND EVERYTIHING ON EARTHONLY AND ONLY TO ALLAH DOES EVERYTHING BELONGFirst part teachEs us imaan in Allah- he is the SOLE owner of everything in existence

WA INTUBDU MAFEE ANFUSIKOOM- Wa intubtu- if you were to expose, if you were to openThat which is hidden inside, evil inside or you continue to hide itEven if you expose it or hide it, ALLAH WILL HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE FOR IT(Allah CAN hold you accountable for it)This teaches us ACCOUNTABLITY, a person needs to live every single waking moment knowing and thinking that Allah can hold me accountable for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING! HE KNOWS EVERYTHING HE IS THE ONE INCHARGE, accountability helps a person stay in line!

FARAGFIRULIMAYASHAA- ALLAH CAN FORGIVE WHOMEVER HE WILLSALLAH CAN PUNISH WHOM EVER HE WILLSEVERYTHING IS UNDER THE CONTROL OF ALLAH, EVERYTHING IS WITHIN HIS GRASPThis teaches us HOW to believe in Allah

SECOND AYAHAAMANURASULU BIMAAA UNZILAILAYKA…THE NEXT STEP, after believing in Allah is believing in the Prophet pbuhWe have modern day problem with our relationship with Prophet pbuh. its NOT an intellectual problem its a spiritual problem, another reason why its not intellectual problem is:

90

Page 91: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

ALLAH SAYS AAAMANARASOOL, the MESSEGNER HAS BELIEVED. The messenger has accepted. In what?BIMAA UNZILAH IN THAT WHICH WAS REVEALED (passive). That which was sent downILAYHI- to himSo the messenger has believed in that which was revealed down to the messengerMIN RABII – from his LordLook at AAMANAR ROOSULOO- BIMAAUNZILAAYNA- in that that was revealed to HIM (talking about rasool) Revealed to RASOOLFrom the MASTER OF THE RASOOLWhat is this talking about? What was revealed to the Prophet pbuh? THE QURANCOULDN’T ALLAH SAID “MESSENGER BELIEVED IN QURAN? YesBut Allah didn’tAllah could have said Allah reveled other stuff as well, Allah could have said THE MESSENGER BELIEVED IN WHAT WAS SENT DOWNBut Didn’t say thatTHE MESSENGER HAS BELEIEVED IN THAT WHICH WAS REVEALED TO THE MESSENGER. He didn’t need to be mentioned again, but Allah forcefully brought the Prophet back into the conversation.

Allah could have said FROM YOUR LORD, but instead said FROM HIS LORD (Messengers Lord)

In this ayah, the messenger is mentioned THREE TIMES,Allah is forcing him in the conversation when talking about revealing the QURANALLAH IS TRYING TO LET US KNOW THAT QURAN CAME THROUGH THE RASOOLSo this concept of “I beleive in the Quran and I have no need for Rasool is WRONG”The AYAH DOESN’T LET YOU DO THAT,

First part of the ayah teaches us to believe in the messenger,WALMUMOOON- and the believersThe believers “follow” The believers are FOLLOWING the messenger! Its visual imagery

The believers follow himKULLUN- ALL OF THEM (believers)

AAMAN BILLAH- they believe in AllahAnd his angelsAnd his booksAnd his messengers

Now THIS IMAAN is being laid out.

So believers are those who believe in angels, books, messengersBUT CHRISTIANS AND JEWS believe in these also!THEN ALLAH makes it exclucive to Muslims

INSERT QURANIC AYAH91

Page 92: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

“THEY SAY, WE DO NOT TAFREEK (DIFERENTIATE) BETWEEN ANY ONE OF THE MESSENGERS.NOW its just taking about us. Jews did not accept IsaChrsitians didn’t accept Muhammad pbuh

These are THOSE people who DO NOT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN MESSENGERS, they believe in ALL THE MESSENGERS

BELIEF is good,But does it stop with that?NOYOU NEED AML, (ACTON!)YOU said a lot, but many are NOT PUTTING IT INTO ACTION

WAQAALOO- THY SAIDSA MINAA- WE HAVE HEARDWA A TA’ NAA- WE HAVE OBEYED

Whats interesting is that its PAST TENSE, because if we said future tense, in Arabic it means ”we will hear, we will obey”, means IT LEAVES IT OPEN ENDED

WE HEARD AND WE OBEYED- ITS A DONE DEAL!

GHUFRAANAK- When we say we have heard and we have obeyed, it’s a pretty heavy statement! If we tell a friend DON’T WORRY, IM READY GIVE ME A CALL, if you need that ride or want me to come with you…What occurs afterward after you leave? O man, what if HE REALLY CALLS!

We say ”WE WILL DO IT, SEND US OUT THERE! then shaytaan comes,…HEYY YOU ARE BITING OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW…”Then we say GHUFRAANAK

GUFRAAAAN- means YOUR ABUNDANT FORGIVNESSKA- YOURS

Its just a statement (YOUR OBEDIANT FORGIVNESS)When you are in BIG TROUBLE, would you casually say “I would appreciate some help”No, when in that SITUATION EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, and you don’t hold back you say HELPPP!!!!

WE ARE IN AN EMERGENCY, WE ARE DROWNING IN OUR SINSWE SAID WE WOULD OBEYWE SAID WOULD LISTENBUT WE ARE NOT DOING IT!!

OH ALLAHWE NEED YOUR FORGIVENESS!!!HELP!AND ONLY TO YOU IS THE FINAL REURNONLY TO YOU IS THE FINAL RETURN

THIRD AYAHLAYOU KALLIFULLAHU NAFSAN ILAA WUS AHAA…NOW in the next ayah, ALLAH PUTS OUR MIND TO EASETHAT ANXIETY IS STIL LTHERELAA YOUKALIFULLAHUYOU KALIFU mean to obligateALLAH DOES NOT OBLIGATE, ALLAH DOES NOT BURDEN,

NAFASAN- ANY SOULEXCEPTWOOSAA- Means capacityALLAH DOES NOT OBLIGATE ANY SOUL EXCEPT BY ITS CAPACITY

LA HAA MA KASABT FOR EVERY SOUL IS WHAT HE HAS EARNEDIF A SOUL IS GOOD HE WILL GET REWARD OF ITBut AGAINST EVERYSOUL IS THAT WHICH IT HAS EARNEDIF YOU DO GOOD YOU’LL GET ITIF YOU DO BAD, THAT WILL BE HELD AGAINST YOU!

Its perfect justiceBut it scares usPerfect justice scares us We know how much we have messed upWe know we have MORE in the negative column (sins)IT SCARES MEFINE I WILL GET THE REWRD OF MY DEEDS BUT I HAVE TO FACE MY SINS…I’M NOT SURE IF ONE SIDE OF THE SCALE WILL BALANCE THE OTHER

ALLAH THEN TEACHES US SUPPLICATIONS, some dua, listen to these supplications…

RABANA- OUR LORDLA TU AAKHIDNAA- TO NOT GRAB US, TO NOT TAKE US, DONT HOLD US ACCOUNTABLEIN- IFNASEENA- IF WE FORGETO- OR AKHT’A NAA WE MESS UP, WE SLIP UP

O ALLAH YOU CREATED US, YOU KNOW US BETER THAE WE KNOW OURSELVES YOU KNOW HAVE TENDENCY TO FORGET AND MESS UP, DON’T HOLD US ACCOUNTABL IF WE MESS UP.

93

Page 94: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Don’t hold us accountable if we forget or make a mistake- which is bigger? MESSING UP worse than forgetting?Forgetting is smaller

In ayah of the Quran there is a specific reason for the order of making dua.In the ayah its teaching us in dua, When asking Allah, we present SMALL THINGS FIRST, then big things!

Example lets say you brake small lamp at home, you are youngAnd you run car into garageWhen you go to parents what do you tell them about first?

Whats wrong?I messed up big timeI messed up really badI cant even tell youYou are going to get very mad

You broke the lamp? Don’t worry about

Quran speak to us in away we understandBUT WHEN ALLAH IS GIVING GIFT, ALLAH GIVES BIGGER THING FIRST!IF THEY MAKE MISTAKE and obviously if they forget…

WHEN WE ASK, WE ASK kindlyBUT WHEN ALLAH BESTOWS FORGIVENESS ON US HE GIVES BIGGER THING FIRST

RABANA- OUR LORDIn the nations of the past- if they made mistakes, and they made mistakes the command would get more difficultIn the nations of the past, they would mess up command then obligation would get MORE difficult

We say DO NOT LOAD UPON, ON TOP OF US, ISRAAN (heavy load, burden)

KAMAA JALTAHU(like you loaded on the people who came before us)A LALLADHEENA MIN QABLINAA

RABANA-Our Lord

WALAA TAH MIL ALAYNAA-Then do not FURTHER load on top of us on that which we DON’T have strength forBeginning of ayah already says “no burden” WUSAA- means CAPACITY (total capacity) like capacity in this room is 200 peopleTAAQAh means strength (not capacity) strength FLUCTUATES, capacity stays the sameSo capacity is 200 people but 100 can sit comfortably (that’s taaqaah)

94

Page 95: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

We now are saying YA ALLAH, we know you wont gave anything beyond our capacity, but at the same time, we are lazy, we have a lot of things going on, so don’t even give us that much responsibly that we find difficult to do!, NOW WE ARE ASKING FOR EASE. MAKE IT EASIER!

WA’ FU ANA- ALAFOO, asking to OVERLOOK, to disregard, WAFUANA- OVER LOOK FROM US THE MISTAKES WE MADE

WAGHFIRLANA—GHARAFA linguistically means to COVER

You can overlook something and NOT hide itForgiveness is one thing and its another thing to cover it up

We are asking O ALLAH OVERLOOK OUR SINS ANDDD HIDE THEM AS WELL, DON’T EXPOSE US.

WARHAMNAA AND HAVE MERCY ON US!

THE CONNECTON BTWEEN FORIGIVENESS AND MERCYExample of why they go HAND IN HANDGHAFURURAHEEMIMAGINE your best friend in the world, you trust him with anything and everything, what happens is your best friend is going through a difficult time. Lost his job, cant pay billsHe is over your house one day and steals something for youAnd you end up finding outHe confesses and says im sorry and that he should have known better. Explains how its been so rough and difficult for him

Aside from stealing , he betrayed your TRUST,You say I cant deal with thisWe cant hang out anymoreWe are not friends anymoreI don’t want to talk to you

A few weeks go byYou get over itBut then you don’t hangout, not comfortable with himFew more weeks go by and you come across him, salam dua, see himAt a distanceThen he apologizes again, Im really sorry, Ill do what ever it takes to make it up to you

You start talking on phone, start email and text messaging again time to time. Its getting betterThen finally he calls you up one day, 6 months have passed since you were over it

He says what are you doing,I’m free, you mind if we hang out?Okay you sayWhen he comes over

95

YOU WILL HIDE EVERYTHING IN YOUR HOUSE, you laptop, watch, big screen on wall lolHe would be like,“I THOUGHT YOU WERE OKAY?, YOU SAID YOU FORGAVE ME?...”

Overview:Something changed in the relationshipEVEN THOUGH you forgave him, things weren’t the same

WE ASK ALLAH FOR MERCY AND FORGIVENESSMERCY BRINGS YOU CLOSSER TO ALLAHYA ALLAH I made mistakes, I am asking you to forgive me and bring me closer to you, closer to you than before I made the mistakes! SUBAHALAH ALLAH IS THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS THE ABILITY TO DO hisOnly Allah can do this HUMANS CANT

ANTA MUALAANA- YOU ARE OUR TRUSTED ALLYSO HELP US AGAINST THOSE

ONCE YOU ALLY YOURSELF WITH SOMEONE, ONCE YOU ARE LOYAL TO THEM ,ONCE YOU STATE YOUR ALLEGIENCE TO ALLAH, HIS ENEMIES ARE YOUR ENEMIES.

Look through the Quran, ALLAH NEVER demanded perfection from usHE DEMANDS A SINCERE EFFORTWE ARE HUMANS, WE WILL MAKE MISTAKESTHE KEY THING IS YOU DON’T DO IT INTENTIONALLY

This attitude of “I don’t care”

If you have student who does all the work and tries, asks you questions and for help and gets answers wrong And then you have another student who just puts random answers with a smiley face on paper and turns it in…

6.03 SUPPLICATION OF ISTIKHARAHPg 30It’s a practical application of salahBasic points about istekharahIstekharah might just be the most misunderstood acts of ibaadah

1) Istkharah DOES NOT have to be done at 3 am on top of a mountain standing on 1 foot while wearing ihram lol. We have ALL THESE UNNESSASARY things we have incorporated into it

1) Istekhara is a dua, supplication. It’s a word for word dua. The Prophet pbuh would teach us istekharah like Surah in the Quran

2) Itsekhara is done after 2 rakah of nafl prayer and then read istkhara

ANYTIME in the dayTHE RESPONSE of itkhara is the CONFIDENCE THAT YOU FEEL in doing what needs to be done

96

Page 97: quran101.weebly.comquran101.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/5/3/12532812/meaningful... · Web viewIf refers to order,- in English doesn’t add a lot, YOU DO WE WORSHIP, WE WORSHIP YOU But

Also its NOT supposed to be FIRST thing you doFIRST SIT THERE AND CAREFULLY THINK ABOUT THE ITEM AT HANDSay you need to buy a carRESEARCH ITLOOK AT DIFFERENT PRICES and compare them to the FEATURESTALK TO A MECHANIC and FAMILY/FRIEND who has the same carCONSULT with others who have knowledge and experience regarding itAFTER YOU COSULTED, you did your research, you think you want to buy a Honda, there are 2 otucomesAfter doing istkhara you will feel confident and the process is easy for you (in buying a Honda)OR after doing istkhara, there comes issues, there is THIS PROBLEM and THAT problemAnd if you don’t feel confident after doing it once, DO IT AGAIN, do it as many time as you needAnd keep doing it till you feel confident

Another point, YOU need to do istekhara for YOURSELF.The person involved in the situation does istekharah

Its very simple! DON’T COMPLICATE THINGS!DEED IS SIMPLE

Hadith of Jabir “Jabir narrates the Prophet pbuh used to teach us istekharah IN ALL OF OUR ISSUES just like he would teach us Surah of Quran. He would say “when anyone of you is concerned about something, is unsure about something, then let that person pray 2 rakah aside from fardh prayer, Then that person should recite:

ALLAHUMA o AllahASTAKHEERUKA- COMES FROM ROOT khay (TO SEEK GOOD)BI ILMIKA- by Means of your knowledgdeWA ASTAQDIRUKA BI QUDRATIKAAND I SEEK FROM YOU THE ABILITY TO DO WHAT I NEED TO DOBY YOUR QUDRAWA ASALUKA- AND I ASK YOU MIN- FROMFADLHLIKAL ADHEEM- GREAT BLESSINGS

LOOK AT THE IMAGERY

WAQDURLIL KHAYRA - make possible for me that which is goodI don’t know where that good could be, I don’t know what I should do, ordain for me WHAT EVER is best for me, what ever is good for me

HAYTHU KAANAHAYTHUKAANA- WHEREVER , HOWEVER IT MAY BEMAKE THAT WHICH IS GOOD FOR ME POSSIBLE WHEREVER IT MAYBE

THUMA THEN AFTER THAATARDINIEEBIH- COMES FROM RADHAA (BEING SATISFIED)THEN MAKE ME SATISFIED WITH IT

OTHER NARRATIONS (THUMMA, THEAFTER THAT MAKE ME SATIFIED WITH IT)THUMA RADINEE BIHRADINEE

The difference Ardinee- from root means make me completely at once satisfiedRadiniee- constantly reassure me about it

There are 2 types fo peopleDepending on what type of person you are you can adjust the ending of the dua (use the other narration)

First type Needed A LOT of convincing but once he makes up hismind, then khalas (finshed), book closed. Once he decides, then he decided he doesnt need anyone

Second type of person, who when they get unsure, they sway back and forth. I want it,I don’t want itI’m not sure

If you needArdiniee- need to make mind once use thisIf you needRadinie- one who changes mind a lot use this

CONCLUSION

The goal of this class was NOT just vocabularyThe way to you can improve the salah is by IMPLEMENTING IT INTO SALAHTHIS WILL HAPPEN WHEN IT BECOMES SECOND NATURE TO YOU

BUT In order to do that, you need all that information to SINK IN

SEEKING KNOWLEDGE IS ALWAYS A TWO STEP PROCESS

LEARNINGTHEN FOLLOW UP

So there are about 27 pages of material. And you have notes on them,For the next 3 weeks, EVERYDAY, take out 15-20 minutes, THAT IS NOT A LOT OFTIME, you will be able to got thru 2-3 pages of notes you have taken.

YOU KNOW HOW EASY IT IS TO TAKE 15 minutes out,Watch one less sitcomBefore going to work, put newspaper down, the world will survive without you reading it

What will happen, basically 2-3 weeks you will be able to go over material atleast once if not twice. IF YOU GO OVER all notes twice, THIS MATERIAL WILL SINK INIT WIL BE SECOND NATURE

That questions of HOW DO I FOCUS IN PRAYERYOU WONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THA ANYMORE!BECAUSE YOU ARE BUSY THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE READINGPROCESSING WHAT YOU ARE SAYINGBUT YOU NEED DEDICATION AND FOLLOW UP

LEARNING KNOWLEDGE IS ONLY BENEFICIAL IF WE APPLY IT!*
