Most doughnuts are made from deep fried dough, and are then coated with many toppings including chocolate and vanilla.

There are also jelly doughnuts that are made like normal ones but hollow. Then the bakers, or whoever is making the doughnuts, infuses them with jelly, cream, custard or many other fillings.

Doughnut Holes, are small spherical pieces of dough that are then deep fried and coated with powdered sugar, sugar, or nothing.

In India a more savory doughnut is made called vandai.

Lagaymat, fried balls of dough drizzled with powdered sugar, are the signature doughnuts of the horn of Africa.

In Austria a solid doughnut is served called krapfen which is usually filled with apricot jam.

In Lithuania spurgos are very popular and are made with cottage cheese, then sprinkled with powdered sugar.

The dona is the Mexican adaptation of the doughnut and is very alike to doughnuts, they can be topped with cinnamon and brown sugar.

Grocery stores in Brazil sell sonhos. They are made with a special type of bread and filled with goiabada (guava jelly) or milk cream, and covered with white sugar

During World War One U.S troops were served doughnuts by the Salvation Army. When the soldiers returned home they wanted the delicious treat they had been served during the war. That was how doughnuts became known in America-you can thank the Salvation Army.

The largest doughnut ever made was a 1.7 ton jelly filled doughnut.
