The Greater Toronto Area (GTA): Canada ’s Economic EngineThe GTa encompasses 7,000 sq. KM (4,350 sq. MI) along the northern shore of lake Ontario. The area consists of 25 municipalities and is home to more than five million people, making it the fourth largest populated area in North america behind only New York, los angeles and chicago. The GTa is proclaimed one of the most multicultural cities in the world with more than 140 languages or dialects spoken here. The GTa is also ranked as the safest large metropolitan area in North america by places Rated almanac.

The GTa generates about one fifth of the GDp of canada and its financial service center is the third largest in North america behind chicago and New York.Source: www.toronto.ca

With Canadian shopping center space at 14.6 Sq. Ft. per capita compared with 23.8 Sq. Ft. for every person in the United States, it is no wonder that canadian shopping malls have been outperforming their U.S. counterparts by almost 50 per cent in sales per square foot. While the average mall performance in the U.S. was slightly above $400USD per square foot in 2011, canadian malls yielded an average of nearly $600USD in sales per square foot, bouncing back faster and higher from the 2009 recession and further increasing the productivity gap between the two markets.Source: Colliers Spring 2012 Report
