Amsterdam Smart City is the innovation platform of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, in which companies, residents, the municipality and knowledge institutions are challenged to submit and apply innovative ideas & solutions for urban issues.

Amsterdam Smart City connects, to create smart collaborations. This contributes to the livability of the Metropole; it promotes sustainable economic growth and creates new markets.

Amsterdam Smart City puts residents at the heart of all projects and initiatives, in order to develop shared ideas and solutions for the city.

Together on the road to a Smart City

A Smart City is a city where social and technological infrastructures and solutions provide sustainable economic growth. This improves the city’s residents’ quality of life. In order to achieve this for the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, Amsterdam Smart City was founded, a unique partnership between companies, governments, knowledge institutions and the people of Amsterdam. ASC believes in a liveable city where people can live and work pleasantly. In five years Amsterdam Smart City has grown to a platform with over 100 partners, who are involved in more than 50 innovative projects.

Amsterdam: #2 Smart City of Europe“In recent years, Amsterdam has stepped up its pace to be a leading smart city. Amsterdam Smart City is a public private partnership focused on using the city as an urban laboratory for the use of open data, new mobility solutions and ultimately improved quality of life for all residents and visitors.”Boyd Cohen — Fastcoexist.com (2014)

The Amsterdam Smart City platform is aware of all the different ideas that can be applied in the city and the challenges that the city faces. By challenging parties to submit innovative solutions and execute them in reply to urban issues, ASC connects and accelerates this movement.

ASC also looks at the possibilities of strengthening previous activities. This advances the development of new markets and profits for innovative solutions. If and when possible, these solutions will be replicated elsewhere in town.

“Cities will become smarter, but in different ways than many people expect. Whereas these top-down projects are struggling, some existing cities are getting smarter from the bottom-up. Amsterdam is considered to be a leader of the pack.”Economist — November 2012

doing / learning

Areas of interest Within the development of Amsterdam as a Smart City, ASC works on a number of areas of interest, in which projects, ideas and new business models are being deployed.

Vehicle2GridIn Amsterdam Nieuw-West a pilot project will put technology to the test that stores locally produced energy in the battery of an electric car. A resident can decide what to do with the energy from their solar panels. The power can be redirected to the net, used immediately in the house, or stored in the battery of a electric vehicle for later use. The car owner can decide to drive the car, or redirect the energy to use in their home at a more convenient time. Result: the technology and research questions are at the end of develop-ment phase. Based on this, the technology will be tested on a small scale Lochem. In 2015, a larger test situation will be set up in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.

City-ZenFrom 2014 till 2019, the Nieuw-West area will be one of the largest Smart Energy living labs, a collaboration of 23 different industrial parties. Implementing innovative solutions will result in an investment of 30 million euro’s. The investment will be made in a smart electric grid and smart warmth solutions; existing housing will become more sustain-able. We will use games to help young people make smart energy choices. Result: several innovative solutions that are developed and implement-ed together with residents. So far about 150 residents are involved.

Smart Citizen KitWith the implementation of 90 low-cost sensors, residents are monitoring invisible elements of their direct surroundings. The kit measures air quality (NO and CO²), temperature, light intensity, decibels and humidity. The data can be measured, compared in real-time and shared with other participants elsewhere in Amster-dam and beyond. This way, urban challenges can be discussed, taking different perspectives into account. Result: the involvement of citizens with their direct environment is strenghtened, on the basis of real data.

Smart Society

“When we started as a small company it really helped us to work togeth-er with the ”big boys“ in several Amsterdam Smart City projects. Now that we are “grown-up” ourselves, expanding our activities abroad, we still profit from the international exposure that we got and the network this gave us. The Smart City experience to work with so many different organizations, is still of great use to us.”Joris Jonker — CEO Quby

“We first met with Amsterdam Smart City at one of the Startupboot-camp Amsterdam partner preview days - since then, ASC has hugely helped us with advice, connections and introductions to relevant individuals and organisations in Amster-dam. The ASC team has opened doors for us and we have been able to contribute towards a smarter and better-connected Amsterdam”John Staunton — Founder Buzzoek

Energie AtlasThe Amsterdam Energy Atlas offers all data regarding energy use, opportunities for energy conserva-tion and possible energy sources and presents them in a user-friendly manner. A collaboration of 8 parties has led to an interactive map that gives an insightful look to open data, as well as making them freely available. Result: an open data tool to find information on energy on the level of the local area, neighbourhood and housing blocks. This helps residents and companies to monitor their energy and take action.

Smart GridIn Amsterdam Nieuw-West the first intelligent grid has been implement-ed, which provides energy for 10,000 households. In this intelligent net, computers and sensors have been placed at interconnecting nodes. This means that the middle voltage grid can be completely operated from a distance. Besides this, the current grid has been strengthened and its structure has been improved. Two-way traffic of energy has been made possible. Result: less and shorter disruptions for end-users, possibilities for large scale generation of energy and the grid enables the development and application of new products and services with smart urban solutions.

Energiek ZuidoostEnergiek Zuidoost wants to reduce the total ecological footprint of the area between Amsterdam ArenA Stadium and the Amsterdam University Hospital AMC. In co-operation with the stakeholders involved research is being done into initiatives that contribute to sustainable development of the area. This will involve data centres, interchange of sustainably harvest-ed energy and a solar roof on the AMC buildings. Result: insight in all energy related oppurtunities, in order to realise concrete deals and action plans.

Smart City AcceleratorAmsterdam Smart City will start a Smart City Accelerator, in coopera-tion with Startup Bootcamp. The accelerator’s ambition is to help grow 10 successful startup compa-nies, during an intensive 3-month program, with an ‘after-care’ period of 12 to 18 months. The six-year program connects local stakeholders and knowledge institutions, so talent can develop and the innovative power and economic sustainability of the region will be strengthened. Result: 60 Smart City startups with urban solutions.
