Tribute To Rawdon Hume Middleton

At a moving ceremony in Dubbo on 29 November, 2012, a bronze bust of Rawdon Middleton was unveiled. Created by local sculptor (and DHS

ex-student), Brett Garling, the bust was commissioned by the Dubbo RSL sub-branch, who combined with Dubbo City Council to fund the sculpture. It was unveiled on the 70th anniversary of the heroic action which led to the death of Pilot Officer Middleton, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

More than 100 people attended the ceremony, which was addressed by Group Captain Peter Davis, who told the story of Middleton’s sacrifice in bringing his crippled plane back from Italy to the coast of England, enabling most of the crew to parachute to safety. Middleton deliberately crashed into the sea to prevent civilian casualties.

The bust is located near the Cenotaph in Dubbo and the full citation for Middleton’s VC, and the names of his crew, are recorded.

“His devotion to duty in the

face of overwhelming odds

is unsurpassed in the annals

of the Royal Air Force.”

DHS & Dubbo College Ex-Students Bindyi Club News February 2013

The Bindyi Club was sorry to learn that Richard Skinner, who has been Principal at the Senior Campus of Dubbo College for 6 years, has been transferred to Rose Bay Secondary College. Mr Skinner has been a great supporter of the Bindyi Club, and a strong presence at the College, which has weathered some controversy

and difficulties in the last few years. We will miss him, but are happy to report that he and his wife, Sam, also a teacher at the Senior Campus, will be joining us at the Annual Lunch.

At the time of printing, a new Principal had yet to be appointed – Ms Debbie Head is Acting Principal.
