Last fall, with the input of our staff, volunteers, members and community leaders, the Museum’s Board of Trustees adopted a new strategic plan for our organization. Among other long-term priorities, the plan calls for making the museum experience more dynamic for all visitors– in particular, for families and children – through the development of new programs and learning opportunities.

Our first step towards achieving this goal is the transformation of an existing classroom on the museum’s lower level into a dedicated center for hands-on arts learning. We began by reviewing similar spaces in art centers and museums across the country and formed a committee of parents to help refine our ideas. Based on this research, local design-build firm Eikamp Arts came on board to help envision new seating, reading and play areas, while McCullough Creative developed new graphics. I invite your family to drop in and try out our reimagined Glab Family Art Studio soon.

DuMA CONTEMPORARIES SERIES

Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, raised in North Carolina, and educated in Iowa City, Fidencio Fifield-Perez produces paintings, prints and large-scale installation works that explore the cultural, social, and political dimensions of immigration, all told from a deeply personal perspective.

The artist’s chosen materials and methods also refer to the crafts and customs taught to him as a toddler in Oaxaca – ones used to celebrate festivals and mourn the dead. For Fifield-Perez these techniques are a way to reconnect with a time and place no longer present.

Summer also brings the return of one of our most popular exhibits, the DuMA Biennial. Now in its sixth year, the 2017 DuMA Biennial (see page 8) showcases the incredible diversity and quality of contemporary art being made in our region today–by artists just beginning their careers to those in their third or fourth decade. I promise you will come away with a deeper appreciation of how artistically rich our corner of the world really is.

While you’re here, don’t miss The Artist Revealed: Two Centuries of Portraits from Cezanne to Dylan (see page 6) and head over to Gallery C for Boundary Object: Works by Fidencio Fifield-Perez, part of our occasional series of off-site exhibitions.

Finally, we welcome Katherine Schroeder aboard as DuMA’s new Marketing & Events Manager and thank all of our volunteers, including our newest museum docents, for sharing their time and talents with our visitors (see pg. 4).

See you at the museum.

SNEAK PEEK: MAY 19-21, DURING THE DUBUQUE FINE ARTS FESTIVAL

Located in a former multi-use classroom on the museum’s lower level, the Glab Family Art Studio has been reimagined as a center for hands-on learning and play through the visual arts.

New art-making stations and activities are designed to capture our youngest visitors’ imaginations and to satisfy their desire to touch, feel, and explore. Each station relates to the museum’s collections and exhibits through age-appropriate learning methods and connects the activities of looking at and making art.

For example, mounted hide-a-way boxes containing materials commonly used in art will provide a tactile experience for infants and toddlers, while a two-way portrait station will allow children to trace their own reflection or the image of another child or parent. For older children and teens, drawing and printmaking activities and a new stop-motion animation station will aid in developing new technical abilities and skills around design and storytelling.

INTRODUCING THE GLAB FAMILY ART STUDIOThe Glab Family Art Studio will also provide maximum flexibility to families and caregivers, who may use the space during regular museum hours (except for posted camps and classes) or rent it for private events.

Questions? Contact Director of Education Margaret Buhr at 563-557-1851.

Thank you to our generous donors and sponsors who made this project possible.

SUMMER 2017 PROGRAMMINGYoung artists will explore the Museum’s galleries for inspiration and head to the studio to create their own works of art in a variety of mediums.

EEXHIBITIONS

The Artist Revealed: Two Centuries of Portraits from Cezanne to Dylan includes more than 60 self-portraits and portraits, made by and depict-ing leading 19th, 20th, and 21st-century artists.

For nearly as long as humans have lived, we have drawn, painted, and sculpted our own image and that of others. For most of history, portraiture served a very practical purpose: to document our own existence and to capture an accurate likeness for posterity. This began to change in the late 19th century, as cameras and film became readily available and afford-able technologies for the general public. While artists continued to create portraits, they no longer served as the primary record of their subject. Instead, and in keeping with broader trends in modern art, many artists sought to express a feeling and capture the inner essence, rather than the outward appearance, of their subjects.

PREMIER EXHIBITION SERIES

The Artist Revealed traces this history, begin-ning with the earliest work in the exhibition, a small wood engraving by American Winslow Homer, dating to 1857; continuing to Paul Cezanne, a French Post-Impressionist artist; and extending to contemporary images by artists as diverse as Norman Rockwell, Alex Katz, Dieter Roth, and Rose Frantzen.

Other highlights include Milton Glaser’s iconic portrait of American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, on loan from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and Grant Wood’s only painted self-portrait, on loan from the Figge Art Museum in Davenport.

Not surprisingly, a majority of the images in the exhibition depict visual artists; however, leading figures in other creative fields, including music, literature, and film, are represented, too.

COMPLETE LIST OF LENDERS: Public collections: Des Moines Art Center, the Figge Art Museum, Grinnell College Faulconer Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., and Syra-cuse University Art Galleries.

Private Collections: Dan Weitz, Rose Frantzen, Diego Lasansky, and Larry Gerber.

2017 DUMA BIENNIALMAY 27 - AUGUST 20, 2017

2017 DuMA BIENNIALMay 27 - August 20, 2017

OPENING RECEPTION AND FIRST FRIDAYFriday, June 2, 5-8 pm

The DUMA Biennial returns with an invigorat-ing survey of new works created by regional contemporary artists.

The Dubuque Museum of Art organizes this popular and highly-competitive exhibition every two years to highlight the artistic talent that enriches the quality of life of our region. The DuMA Biennial is recognized as a premier juried exhibition opportunity and brings

together emerging and established artists who are actively producing and presenting new work.

A Call for Entries went out in December 2016 and resulted in a record 208 artists from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Missouri submitting over 580 works of art for juror Amanda Burdan to review. The continued growth of the Biennial underscores the importance of this type of regional, open-call exhibition opportunity and brings special attention to the talent in our own backyard. With its geographical focus, the DUMA Biennial also presents a visual representation of life in this region through distinctive artistic styles, themes, and materials.

MEMBER PROFILE: BETSY & BOB BADGER - SUMMER 2017

Why did you become a member? For over 40 years, one particular interest we have shared is visiting art museums throughout our travels. Growing up in the Kansas City area, the Nelson Atkins Museum was our earliest exposure to curated collections, so we had a great example right at home. We make a point to visit art museums wherever we go. Our approach to the art we see is very different – Bob likes the emotional connection he feels with the art work, and Betsy is more interested in how artists develop and change their themes and techniques over time.

Neither of us can pick a favorite (other than DuMA!) but Bob’s list would certainly include the Prado in Madrid, Spain and the Getty Museum in California. Betsy’s favorites include the Chicago Museum of Art and the Phillips Collection in Washington DC.

What is your favorite part about being a member? Our favorite part about being a member of DuMA is our pleasant surprise when we moved here and learned that we have such a great art museum right here in Dubuque, Iowa--along with an active and vibrant arts community.

What do you enjoy most about the Museum? Betsy enjoys Lunch and Learn art history classes with Margi Buhr’s excellent curriculum and presentation. Bob enjoys seeing new exhibits as they travel through.

What would you like to see happen next? We are looking forward to seeing further collaborations between DuMA and other arts groups both in Dubuque and this region. We’re also very excited about the educational offerings to children and the upcoming programs to expand that.

FUTURE MEMBER TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIESHave you enjoyed the DuMA member trips in the past and want to participate in the future? Let us know. Two different member trips are in the works for this fall but they will only occur pending sufficient member interest.

EXPO Chicago September 16-17, 2017 Enjoy a weekend adventure in the Windy City and visit to EXPO Chicago, the city’s leading exhibition of modern and contemporary art and design. Held in Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, EXPO Chicago includes four days of art discussion, appreciation, and viewing. While in Chicago, we also anticipate visits to one or more artist studios and private collections.

20th Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio TourOctober 14, 2017 An annual tradition entering its third decade, the Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour typically includes stops at more than 40 artist studios spread across scenic Northeast Iowa. Travel in comfort with museum friends and visit the studios of leading artists working in all media.

AANNUAL REPORT

In 2016, DuMA’s Board of Trustees set a new course for the organization by adopting a five-year strategic plan and updating the museum’s Foundation Statements and long-term goals, as follows:
