summer, with one less staff member and with Trent Crittenden taking the role ofActing Course Superintendent. Well done team. Further good news is that, with the help of David Elliot MP, we have securedGovernment funding from the Minister for Disabilities to the tune of $24,000, tohelp address our lack of disability access through the front door of the club. Whencompleted this work will provide dignified access for our members and guestswith mobility issues. Work on the project will be carried out in the coming monthswith what we expect to be minimal disruption to club activities. Don’t miss out on the first of our big shows for 2019 on Saturday 16 March. Thevery popular John ‘Elvis’ Collins and Aaron Mansfield are bringing a brand-newshow to Cumberland for what promises to be another big night of entertainment. CAPTAINS REPORT February has seen the qualifying rounds for the Cock of the Walk take place, completion of the Summer Cup and Holroyd Shield and commencement of theMajor Pennant season. This year’s Summer Cup required a playoff between Ian McCarthy and AdamStorey with Ian McCarthy continuing his good form after getting back into regulargolf last year. The Holroyd Shield was won by Isaac Sampson, playing off ahandicap of 28, posting a fine score off nett 65. Isaac has a great ability of beingable to peak with his game when the major events are played. CongratulationsIan and Isaac on your successes. The Major Pennant team has been successful in two of their four matches to date. With two matches still to go there is opportunity to head up the Division with winsin the remaining matches. We have a new look team with three of our playersmaking their debut in Major Pennant golf. Matt Andrew had a fine win on anervous first day and backed it up with a big win at Cumberland in round four.Arthur Barakat, at 18 years of age, has had three good wins including a strongwin over former Australian representative (and 19 times Club Champion) BradLincoln at Carnarvon. Josh Madeleine is Cumberland’s youngest ever MajorPennant representative at 14 years of age. Josh has played three games for threewins and has a very bright future representing the Club. During March we have the John Gow Memorial Golf Day (Sunday 10th) and theCumberland Bowl (Saturday 16th). The Cumberland Bowl event is only forplayers on a handicap of 13 and above with this year’s event is reverting to an‘Open’ event to boost the field size. Once again, please familiarise yourself with the changes to the Rules of Golf. Didyou know that you are now entitled to a free drop if your ball is embedded in itsown pitch mark in the rough? VICE CAPTAIN’S REPORT The Course staff have been gradually getting on top of the standard maintenance, which will hopefully provide the opportunity for other key maintenance issues tobe undertaken. The first major task will be the course wide spraying of theParramatta grass. External testing of our greens’ health indicates that they remain fairly healthy. Thisis a pleasing outcome, given the high humidity coupled with spurts of heavy

rainfall. This time of year is also conducive to heavy weed growth. Our volunteersin conjunction with the Garden Club recently worked on eradicating a significantamount of weeds. During the Course renovation, the volunteers will work on othermaintenance issues to enable the Course staff to focus on other pressing needs. I have previously referred to repair of pitch marks and divots. Course care by allgolfers is a critical part of ensuring all participants enjoy the golf course. The smallissues relating to the general appearance of the golf course are also important. These include, putting rubbish in garbage bins on the course, practice balls notbeing left on the golf course and soil bins not being used as rubbish containers.Ensuring these small issues are dealt with, will assist our Course staff to solelyconcentrate on the critical issues.
