ANALYSIS OF LITERATURE AS

MIRROR TO A SHARED HERITAGE OF PEOPLE WITH

What Is It

In understanding literature, there are so many things that we need to consider- it's a

definition, classification, relation to culture in association with the author's beliefs and

personal backgrounds. For you to be able to understand these concepts read and understand

the details presented below.

Literature is any written works that are considered to have a long-lasting impact or

importance as it expresses permanent interest ideas. This can either be in the form of poetry

or prose.

Poetry refers to verse expressions, with measures, rhymes, lines, stanzas, and

melodious tone. It is not intended merely to entertain. It has a very useful and serious

function: to embody deep truths that reveal to us about human beings.

Till Hearts End Chayasi Sunthonphiphit

(tr. Jaames N. Mosel and Burton Raffel)

My mind glows,

Knows no fear of the darkness and

its tight web,

Though the stars blur, and the

moon’s dim rays

Are sucked into nothingness,

And the oneness of man

still cannot be found

Though the sky splits and crackles,

Drops no gentle music,

Though a rooster’s hurried

crowing jars my ears,

And a frightened dog goes

whimpering up and down.

This clear light inside me

Pushes the wild, heavy night back:

It will never flicker, it can never change,

Neither pain nor sorrow can reach it.

The earth swings in circles;

Soon, light must break through dawn

Hanging, golden and clear over all the

world, men living like men.

In the lonely night I lie listening

to my own heart,

The darkness so thick I could lose my

way

Except for the faint, echoing chant

Of the most precious words ever written.

Words like drops from heaven

Falling like wisdom, strength,

peace, beauty, into waiting heart,

These two small hands will move as this

minds leads to them,

Will carry Buddha’s divine law

Here to this earth, until this heart

no longer beats. Lourdes M. Ribo et. al., Language in Literature, Afro- Asian Literature, Revised Edition. Vibal Publishing House Inc. Phlippines, 2005. 186-187

Poets are not only authors of language and music, but they are also the institutions of

laws, the founders of civil society, the inventors of the arts of life, and the teachers who draw

into certain dimensions the beautiful and the truth.

sung to the

accompaniment of a

musical instrument

story following order of

events

Dramatic Poetry – has elements

closely related to drama because

it is written in a dramatic form.

Examples:

Simple Lyric

Song

Sonnet

Examples:

Dramatic Monologue

The Soliloquy

form of written or spoken language and within the common flow of conversation. It is easily understood as compared to poetry. In subject matter, prose generally concentrates

on the familiar and ordinary but may also deal with subjects such as heroism, beauty, love,

and nobility of spirit.

facts which illustrates truths about human

What does it mean to interpret literature? When you interpret literature, you are

trying to find the meaning and significance of the story. You are asking yourself both what

the text means and why it is important.

One of the best ways to interpret writing is to use the text as a guide. When you use

the text as a guide, you examine the main elements of the story and see how they relate to

each other to find the meaning and importance of the story.

When the words you encounter are difficult to understand so that you can get the

message of the text you are reading, aside from consulting the dictionary, you can analyze

how the words are being used in the sentence, and we called it context clues. This refers to

information that appears near a word or phrase and offers direct or indirect suggestions about

its meaning.

Moreover, to fully understand literary works' meaning, one must not forget that

literature has something to do with society-its culture, diversity, and heritage.

Page 7: eal of artnership English - ZNNHS

5

Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people,

encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music, and arts.

The diversity refers to the existence of variations of different characteristics in a group

of people. These characteristics could be everything that makes us unique, such as our

cognitive skills and personality traits, along with the things that shape our identity.

Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to

future generations.

Having acquired all these, we conclude that literature reflects society, its good values,

and its ills. It also projects the virtues or good values in society for people to imitate. As an

imitation of human action, literature often presents a picture of what people think, say, and do

in society. It is impossible to find a work of literature that excludes society's attitudes,

morale, and values since no writer have been brought up completely unexposed to the world

around him.

VISION

By: FERAYA

A country of great beauty

People so gentle and kind

There is also ugliness

And cruelty

Fleeing and hiding

And foraging for food

To survive

Our people are in pain

Suffering like no hell on earth

Darkness and despair

Surround them

And freedom is out of reach

Beaten and battered by life

Death and diseases

Of the mind and spirit

Swallowed up by gloominess

And bitterness

How can they carry on?

Each of us has a role to play

To help our countrymen

Not by hatred and blame

Not by giving false hope

Or ideas

Or concepts

But to see the big vision

A vision that’s not small or limited

A vision that’s vast and spacious

So that Burma’s people may rise up

Like a beautiful lotus

From a muddy pond.
