CROSS COUNTRY CROSS COUNTRY Our Year 4, 5 and 6 students took part in the annual Inter School Cross-Country Carnival at Guildford Primary School on Friday, 28 June. The event involved 12 other schools from around the North Eastern suburbs of Perth running between 1.5-2.0km through mud, long grass and a variety of uneven surfaces. This was our second year taking part in the event and as usual we were up against a number of schools with a much larger group of children to select from. In addition to this the event is actually organised for children from Year 4 – 7, which makes our performance this year all the more special. In all of the events we entered this year our children finished the races, with the majority of them finishing within the top 10. To put this into perspective, our children finished within the top ten of a potential entry pool of over 700 children. As is the norm with our children the behaviour and levels of sportsmanship were of the highest order. Well done to everyone who took part and a big thank you to the parents who volunteered to ferry children to the event. I am already looking forward to the event next year. REPORTSREPORTS

You would have received these on Thursday, 4 July. The grade your child receives is explained on the cover sheet, however in order to further explain the grades, please see details about the Bell (named for obvious reasons) Curve below.

The curve defines the spread of allocated grades over the whole group of children in your child’s class. In the main, children will receive a “C” for working at a Satisfactory Level. This ascends to an “A” for exceptional work and “E” for performance below the Mean (average) of the class.

Your children have worked tirelessly through the Semester and are to be congratulated on their excellent reports. Certainly a reason to celebrate success.

PARENT AND TEACHER MEETINGSPARENT AND TEACHER MEETINGS

On Wednesday, 31 July Week 2 of Term 3, children will attend school for a half day and will be sent home at 12:00 pm. At the start of term, teachers will release a schedule of possible meeting times over the afternoon and if you want to discuss your child’s report and progress then I encourage you to book ahead as soon as possible.

    SCHOOL DISCOSCHOOL DISCO

Our school disco was a fantastic success and efficiently run by our P&C ladies and volunteers. It was great to see so many of our children dancing the night away and a few mums kicking up their heels too. Children were entertained by a DJ, with games and prizes and enjoyed some yummy pizza. Thank you to everyone who came along and for supporting our P&C who always excel.

I wish all members of our community a restful holiday. Fortify the bonds you have with your children and help lay down memories that will last a lifetime.

Wise words for the fortnight …….

  • MENTAL COMPUTATIONMENTAL COMPUTATION

It is important to know there isn’t just one way of finding the answer to a problem and not everyone will use the same method. It is helpful to ask your child how they worked out the answer and to share your mental calculating strategies with them. The teaching of computation has changed significantly in recent years. We want children to be flexible in the calculating methods they use and understand why one method may be preferred over another.

    SUBITISINGSUBITISING

Recognising an arrangement (to see at a glance how many) begins by seeing small numbers (2, 3, 4) without having to count. This knowledge is used to build up the ability to visualise basic facts. Eg 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, 3 + 3 = 6

    BLUE BALLOON DAY

Thank you to all the families that supported our whole school charity event for the Asthma Foundation that we held on Thursday, 27 June in which we raised $317. Each child that donated was involved in filling our undercover area with blue balloons that they decorated with their name. As always our aim is to develop in our children – the

citizens of tomorrow - empathy and a sensitivity towards

those in our society who need support to make their lives

    better.

THE EMOTIONAL DEVELOTHE EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CHILD IN PMENT OF A CHILD IN

    SCHOOLSCHOOL

Positive and consistent behaviour management strategies are critical to the development of emotional regulation and control. Primary school age children develop a range of emotional skills.

    These include

    • The capacity to take into account the particular situation when determining an appropriate emotional response.

    • A growing understanding that emotions in the same circumstances, may result in them experiencing a different reaction at different times.

    • The ability to know a great deal about “display rules” for emotions. They know it is better, at times, not to show their emotions.

The PATHS program that has been introduced at our school assists students to develop true empathy for others. Students discuss a range of feelings that they may feel themselves in a particular situation and feelings they may have for others in particular situations. The link is made with the different feelings being OK but behaviours that are unacceptable are not OK. At our school an emphasis is placed on the procedure being used to assist students to correct unacceptable behaviour. A consistent approach where children are given the opportunity to correct their behaviour and the child is assisted to get back on track by the teacher reinforces the strategies that are being taught in the PATHS program. We ask for your support at all times as positive results occur, as we work as a team to assist any child modify the unacceptable behaviours.

  • State, National and International Taekwondo Coach Mr Charles Rawlins, will be conducting Taekwondo classes for children at Aveley Primary School on Wednesday and Friday from 4-5pm.

This program is designed specifically for primary school children aged between 4 to 14 years of age, the classes involve teaching the physical aspects of Martial Arts as well as the core values of Respect, Discipline, Confidence, Self Awareness, and of course Self Defence skills.

Give us the chance to help develop these important life skills to your children, that will help them through their entire life.

Please call Mr Rawlins on 0410 695183 for further information.

    Hi Everyone,

Well we can’t believe how quick term two has gone and once again the holidays are upon us.

For our final two weeks of term for school banking we had great numbers with a total of 92 deposits being made.

A very big thank you to the following volunteer’s for their support, time and effort in helping us with our biggest attendance by our students for last Friday’s disco: Kelly Smith-Brodigan, Dimitra Godfrey, Corrina Fisher, Christine Cory, Cheryl Kelly, Michelle Deering and Krista Bingham. Let us not forget our core people Michelle Del Nero, Renae Chamberlain and Aimie Elmer. I would also like to mention our beautiful Teachers, Deputy Principals and Principal who came along and spent time with their students outside the classroom environment. You can definitely see by the childrens reactions they loved every minute of it.

To the families that placed an order for chocolates they were delivered to the relevant child and their classroom on Wednesday, 3 July. Fingers crossed they have arrived home safely and not been taste tested. Enjoy selling or eating them over the holiday break and just a reminder the monies raised are to be returned on Wednesday, 24 July. Also to our families who chose the donation option, thank you.

We wish everyone and their families a safe holiday and look forward to a successful fundraising in Term Three.

    Be safe and keep smiling.
