EACS sets sights on August blended learning rollout

By August, East Allen County Schoolshopes to become one of several schoolcorporations in Indiana to integrate iPadsinto its curriculum model.

For months, the EACS school board hasdiscussed the rollout of a $3.3 million to$3.5 million blended learning initiativethat would put 6,000 iPads in the hands ofstudents, taking full advantage of acurriculum that has already had tech-nology standards built in for two years, according to EACS Director of Accounta-bility William Diehl.

The school district first integratedMacintosh computers into its classroomsin 2007 and added the use of iPod Touch

devices the following year. In 2010, thedistrict introduced iPads to classroomsusing a system in which schools couldcheck out the device to use with the helpof a media specialist. The district now has30 iPads circulating among its schools.

Now that faculty and staff have realizedthe iPads potential to enhance classroomand project-based learning, there is ageneral consensus among everyone thatthe change is needed; the only debate hasbeen who needs them first. The schoolboard was expected to vote on one ofthree options at its April 17 public worksession, after the East Allen CountyTimes deadline.

Of the three options, the board foundtwo to be most appealing because bothallowed students at every grade level to

have some access to classroom iPads, versus an option that would not makeiPads available to middle school studentsduring the rollouts first year. However, there was concern regarding the access

students in grades K-5 would have: Inthose classrooms, teachers would have

just one iPad for every four students.School board President Neil Reynoldswas unsure how distributing the use ofiPads among those students would work.

For Kylee Shirey, theproject appeals to every

noble and daring part ofher: the risk-taker, theentrepreneur, theeconomic visionary, thehopeful steward of educa-tion and community, andthe grateful attorney whobelieves at her very coreshe must pay back whatothers have given her.

It will begin withlemonade standsthroughout Fort Wayneand who knows, shesaid may very wellwind up being the littleproject that pays some ofthe biggest dividends in

retaining and attractingtalent in Fort Wayne.

It will begin withLemonade Day Fort

What I love about thisidea is its such a simpleconcept, and yet wereteaching kids these really, really important lifelessons that theyre notgetting in schools rightnow, said Shirey, anearnest 31-year-old corpo-

rate attorney with Barrett& McNagny LLP and co-director of Lemonade DayFort Wayne. Its a wayfor parents or if aparent isnt involved, another mentor tocome alongside a kid andwork through this withthem.

And I think its neatbecause the Wall StreetJournal has done stories and just nationwidethere have been storiestold about kids who setup their lemonade standand then the next year

When parents thinkback to their own child-hoods, a day in the lifewas likely very differentcompared with childrentoday. Back then, thesummer months werespent outside with neigh-borhood friends, collecting grass stains andreturning home only whena growling stomachreminded them it was timefor dinner.

It might be like that forsome children now, butwhen the NationalWildlife Federation saysthat an average kid spends7 1/2 hours each day infront of a screen, itbecomes hard to believethere are many.

For parents who feeltheir child spends toomuch time glued to theTV, clicking throughFacebook or conqueringvideo games, perhaps thissummer is the perfect timeto check out the Play-ground RecreationProgram through New

    Haven-Adams TownshipParks and Recreation.

The idea of the Play-ground RecreationProgram is simple, really, said Anna Gurney, recre-ation director at NewHaven-Adams TownshipParks and Recreation. Itsto get kids outside and getthem moving. There is ageneration of kidsgrowing up whose time isso programmed and struc-tured, they dont knowhow to use their imagina-tion and just play.

Gurney said that evenwhen kids do play, itsgenerally not very activeand often involves a videogame or computer.

This is exemplified inthe childhood obesityepidemic in our country, she said. The idea of theNew Haven Parks andRecreation playgroundprogram is to get kids outin the parks playing.

The Playground Recre-ation Program beginsMonday, June 4, at Jury,

Schnelker, Meadowbrook,Havenhurst and Klotzparks. Games, crafts andrecreational activities getkids off the couch andactively outside, chal-lenging themselves, usingtheir own creativity and

just plain being a kid. Allactivities are supervised,as long as children arevisiting the park duringsupervised hours. Thisyear, there are also severalthemed event days:

On Mondays beginningJune 4, kids can visit play-ground craft sheds forFree Bead Monday to

make a craft of theirchoice with beadsprovided by park staffthrough Aug. 3.

On Tuesdays beginningJune 5, the parks will hostGame Day Tuesdaythrough July 31, withdifferent games weekly ateach park.

Even on hot summerdays, kids will loveplaying outside on WetWednesday: Wet n Wild.Parks will organize watergames each Wednesdaybeginning June 6.

curriculum, explained thattheir bounce literacyteaching model alreadylends itself to sharingiPads among studentgroups in grades K-5. Thebounce literacy modeluses classroom worksta-tions to rotate studentsthrough various learningactivities, working with ateacher, a smart board orat individual computerworkstations. Teacherswould simply add an iPadworkstation to the mix.

Its already naturallyset up that way and kidsrotate through thosegroups working on skillsthat they need at theirindividual level, Hissongsaid. Our classrooms

already speak to that.Teresa Knoblauch, prin-

cipal at Highland TerraceElementary School, alsofelt the introduction ofiPads to the classroom is anecessary and natural fitfor students.

In my building Iveseen the level of studentengagement increase inhuge strides and I thinkthats because of theamount of technologythats been brought intoour classroom, specifi-cally the smart boards, she said. I think addingthe iPads to that will justreally bring together aclassroom of kids that arehighly engaged in theirlearning.

We have a curriculumthat was specifically

written for technology,Diehl said. If you left K-

5 out of this right now, what a travesty. I thinkthats the brilliance of thecurriculum writers. Thefact that we have acurriculum that waswritten and is now twoyears old and it has all thetechnology standards putin, all the project-basedlearning I have notvisited a district that hasthat kind of embeddedtechnology, so I thinkwere ripe and ready to go,we just need the device.

years ago.She ticked off all the

learning her children haveexperienced: that not allincome is profit; that busi-ness location is important;that advertising helps; thatteamwork and thinkingoutside the box are crit-ical; and that it helps if abusiness is unique.

The Orvananos familyaddressed uniqueness witha secret lemonade recipeand a home deliveryoption that has Alejo Jr.,now 11, and the 8-year-old twins transportingplastic pitchers oflemonade to residents oftheir suburban neighbor-hood.

Their family project hadone other reward: Itbrought a shy Patricio outof his cocoon.

At the end of the firstLemonade Day, his

mother said, he was soopen, he was so excited. Itwas great for him. Now,hes a lot more confident.

Shirey was never shorton confidence, by thesounds of her lifes

journey, which beganoutside Oakwood inPaulding County, Ohio. But the mother of twoyoung children shares somany of the qualities andexperiences that typifyLemonade Day. In gradeschool, she had a Route66 lemonade stand madeout of a cardboard refrig-

erator box, and later shetested her budding entre-

preneurial skills bymaking hair scrunchiesand selling them at herfathers convenience store.

At the heart of herinvolvement in LemonadeDay, though, is a missionthat brings a repressedtear or two when she talksabout it: helping thecommunity by offering

payback for the assistanceshe received along theway.

It is the kind of philan-thropic responsibilityLemonade Day hopes toinstill in young people.

People, Shirey said, have invested in me, andI think its important togive back. I wouldnt bein the position Im in, Iwouldnt be doing whatIm doing had it not been

for people taking theirtime to invest in me.
