Vickie’s Byline

Hi Quilty friends! Where has the summer gone? School will be back in session soon. This is a happy time if you have young ones still at home, since it means more time to sew! At our August meeting, we have Susan Purney Mark coming for a class and lecture. Sadly, her Thursday class has been cancelled due to lack of sign ups. But the Saturday class still has some slots open. It is called Give and Take and looks like a fun one! It works with positive and negative images. Remember Jan Cunningham's wonderful turquoise and black quilt? It's easier than it looks and is sure to make a stunning design. There will be no Meet and Greet at the Thursday evening meeting since Susan will not be coming in time for that. No doubt Shelby has something interesting up her sleeve! In September, all of you Featherweight lovers will have the opportunity to learn everything you ever wanted to know about your machines! The same class is offered on both Thursday and Saturday, so only sign up for one. Enjoy the last days of summer. Hopefully, we'll have a break in the heat soon! I'm spending a week at the beach with my extended family. There will be no time to sew, but lots of good bonding! See you August 27 and 28. -- Vickie

Nominating Committee at Work The Nominating Committee has begun work to develop a slate of officers for 2016 and a list of committee appointments for our next President. As provided in our by-laws, the Committee is chaired by the Guild Secretary and includes the 1st and 3rd Vice Presidents. In addition to Robin Meyer, Andi Barney and Jeanette Walton (who hold those offices), President Vickie Lord has also appointed Deborah Jones, Kay Harper, Lynn Rinehart and Shelby Smith. Guild leadership is rewarding! Not only does it enable members to “give back” to the Guild, but it opens doors to new friendships and experiences. Everyone with an interest in serving is encouraged to contact Robin Meyer ([email protected]) or Andi Barney ([email protected]) or any other member of the Committee. Opportunities come in all sizes – large and small – and utilize a variety of talents. The Nominating Committee will complete its work by fall, so that the 2016 officers can stand for election at the December holiday part and Executive Committee introduced at that same meeting.

Ooops! At the July meeting, we amended the June minutes in error, so we will need to fix that at our meeting in August. In July, Treasurer Amy Knoespel provided bank balances that were different than those in the newsletter. An assumption was made that those numbers were in the minutes and so we amended the minutes. But, they were not in the minutes, but rather in a separate article. So the June minutes should not have been amended. Got that? In summary, the minutes were fine and didn’t need to be amended. If you have questions, please email Secretary Robin Meyer at [email protected]. Our apologies for the confusion!

Looking for blocks!! Quilts of Valor is looking for quilt blocks to use at their next sew-in. The pattern isn’t important; they should just be red, white and blue. They need to be squared up to 12 ½” unfinished. And if you have any patriotic fabrics to donate to the project, please let Pat know! If you are interested in helping, look in the back of the Newsletter for more detailed information! Pat Kilmark, volunteer 404-281-9354

Dear Members, It has come to our attention that everyone of us has had complaints about the excess noise during our meetings. We also have members who don't come because they have hearing aids and can't hear... no matter where they sit.. The acoustics in the high ceiling also allow the conversations to be heard up front at the podium. We would ask that you take your conversations outside of the meeting room if necessary or wait until the break. Let's not be "rude" to those who need to speak to the whole group and to those who really want to listen to what's going on. Thank you for understanding..... -- ECQG Committee Board

Bring in your comfort quilt! Why not sew something up while it is too hot to get outside? The August meeting would be a good time to come bearing gifts of quilts for DFACS kids. We are 1/4 on the way to our goal for this year. See you at the community quilt table at the next meeting. You don't have to wait until the program in October. -- Sherry and Laura

Sunshine It is glorious Summertime and there is plenty of SUNSHINE outside, but we still have members who could use a bit of SUNSHINE in their mailboxes. If you know of someone who could use a little SUNSHINE please contact: Jan Cunningham at [email protected] or 770 424 7568.

East Cobb Quilters’ Guild Executive Committee Meeting Minutes East Cobb Library, Marietta, GA

August 7th, 2015 continued

Programs – Jan Cunningham reported for Christie Stevens that the Thursday class with Susan Mark has been cancelled due to lack of interest but that the Saturday class has 14 students so far. Both of Nova Montgomery’s October classes are full, with a wait list for Thursday. Jan listed the speakers for 2016-2018 and asked for suggestions as well. A discussion ensued as to ways to publicize upcoming workshops. Community Service – Laura Bishop reported that 50 quilts had been received so far, and that most quilts are donated in October. In 2014, 175 quilts were donated. Discussion was held that focused on the need to clarify that there are only 3 “official” guild Community Service projects – Quilts for DFCS, Placemats for Meals on Wheels and Pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer. As a group, it was decided to ask that makers of Community Service Donations participate in Show and Tell and then visit the Community Service table to make their donation. Bulletin Board – Vickie reported for Pat Allen that the hexie class at the library was very successful and thanked Stella Lang again for teaching it. The library enjoyed having Melinda Fulkerson’s Nancy Drew quilt, and Vickie asked that we look for other quilts with book themes. Challenge Quilts – Melinda Rushing reported that the Pinterest board was attracting followers and reminded everyone that challenges were a good opportunity to stretch one’s skills. Evening Group – Bella Bamert reported that most meetings have about 30 attendees. The leadership will meet on September 13 at 10am at La Madelaine to plan for next year, especially programs in months that speaker from the Program Committee is not available. Library – Devon Pfeif told the group that Sally Joerger has been helping with the Library and that they would be re-cataloging in August, so that books could be located by topic and displayed by topic. Some new bins will be purchased to better store books. There will be a book sale in October, and donations of books are welcome as well. The Library will not be open at the October meeting for check out, due to the sale. Show and Tell – Helena Krapp discussed the problem that noise presents during Show and Tell, and the conversation touched on noise from individual conversations during other parts of the meeting. Jan offered to contact the church about using better speakers in the future. Other ways to quiet the group were also suggested.
